In this video we try Welsh cakes and an assortment of Welsh chocolate for the first time! Join us as we taste test a variety of Welsh chocolate and some really delicious Welsh cakes! These snacks sent to us from wales were incredible. We started with the Tan y Castell brand of Welsh cakes, which were so good. Then we tried a Welsh language milk chocolate bar, some amazing "taste of Wales" truffles and two Wickedly Welsh dark chocolate bars. One with sea salt and the other made with Penderyn Whisky. Most of this was new to us, but all were high quality, fresh and amazing.
We enjoyed our first Welsh food reaction and look forward to trying more unique items in the future. Stay tuned for more videos like this.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British and Irish ancestry.

My wife, who is English, periodically makes me (I am Welsh) Welsh cakes. They are outstanding and very more-ish.
She uses a very heavy circular "stone" made, unofficially, in a Welsh steelworks some 60 to 70 years ago.
    "Cymru" is pronounced "cumree".

Welsh cakes are just a flat scone cooked on a griddle, homemade and still warm they literally melt in the mouth, but we do always eat them with butter, lots of butter! When I was a kid my Mum would make they alongside 'Drop Scones' (which are nothing like Scones!) which is what we call Scotch Pancakes which are very similar to your American breakfast pancakes, but Drop Scones are small like Welsh Cakes and again eaten with butter, we basically eat everything with butter in Wales, you should try and get hold of some Bara Brith too which is a fruit cake/bread which again we eat spread with butter, if you liked shop bought Welsh cakes you'll absolutely LOVE homemade ones, and they're super quick and easy to make.

Very enjoyable video, I sent a link of this video to Cathryn Cariad chocolates saying how much you liked them! 'Cariad' means 'Darling' , "Carry-add". Congratulations to Lindsay for being able to say 'Wales' properly! Funny that as she seems to have the same accent as you Steve! I am a beer drinker too, but a few years ago, my kids bought me a bottle of Penderyn whisky (no 'e') It was the very best whisky I have ever tasted, and in fact the ONLY whisky I have really enjoyed! I thought maybe it was a Welsh bias, but I can't find it here in Canada any more, and another Welsh whisky I found was nowhere near as nice! Welsh is very surprisingly easy language to pronounce as it is almost totally phonetic. But you do have to learn how to say 'LL' and 'CH' properly, no English equivalents. Also to slightly trill the 'R's . and to put the emphasis on the second to last syllable. So 'Penderyn' is said 'pen-DER-in' !

Instead of a traditional bakestone you can use a heavy frying pan. A drop of oil on the pan wiped off with kitchen paper is all you need....

The Welsh Cakes are rather like The Chorley Cakes, (which are only made in Chorley, Lancashire), and the Eccles Cakes, (which are only made in Eccles, which was formerly part of Lancashire, but is now a suburb of Greater Manchester),
    Welsh Cakes:-
Welsh cakes are made from flour, butter or lard, currants, eggs, milk, and spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. They are roughly circular, a few inches (7-8 cm) in diameter and about half an inch (1-1.5 cm) thick.
    Chorley Cakes:-
A Chorley cake is made using currants, sandwiched between two layers of unsweetened shortcrust pastry. The Chorley cake is significantly less sweet than Eccles cake, and is commonly eaten with a light spread of butter on top, and sometimes a slice of Lancashire cheese on the side.
    Eccles Cakes:-
If you've never heard of them, Eccles Cakes are small, round cakes made from flaky pastry that is filled with dried currants, candied lemon, orange zest, sugar and spices that commonly include cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cloves.
If you want to go a level up for an Eccles cake, you would be eating a Mince Pie

The Bitter taste of the Hershey’s Cadbury’s bar is because of a process called “Lipolysis”, where they sour the milk before mixing it with the sugar & cocoa crumb mix,
By souring the milk, it releases the Butyric Acid that gives it a longer shelf life, but it also gives it a Tangy Vomit taste,
However Hershey’s state that they add sugar to the milk before condensing it to remove more moisture from the milk,
This is meant to give it a thicker texture when the milk, sugar & chocolate is mixed together,
Hershey’s is also believed to use a process called “Dutching”, this is adding an alkali to the cocoa beans, which would also give it the sour tangy taste,
But the Crumb of Hershey’s Cadbury’s Chocolate is imported from Ireland, so it is a different crumb to their own original Hershey’s chocolate,
All they do is add the Sour Milk to the crumb to produce the Hershey’s Cadbury’s chocolate,
But for the original Cadbury’s chocolate, you can’t beat the original chocolates that you can try whilst touring around Cadbury’s World (Theme Park), in Bournville near Birmingham,

Welsh cakes are literally called cakes of the bakestone. Nearly every welsh household has a steel bakestone that is used on the stove top ( many were homemade by husbands in the steelworks or mines, sa it is made of steel about 1/2" thick and about 13" round. The mix is rolled and cooked on a buttered bakestone for about 3 minutes per side. You actually know when to flip them because the top texture changes ( much like a pankake) hence the story of King Alfred burning the cakes.

There was a TV show in the UK in 2008 about a guy called Willie who went to South American and bought a chocolate factory, and he still has his own company today selling chocolate, he does a lot of 100% cacao stuff, it was from his cookbook that I first came across Venezuelan hot chocolate, which is just 100% cacao melted in water with added sugar or honey, the Theobromine in the chocolate has a similar effect on the human body as Caffeine, I love the intense kick and bitterness of dark chocolate, but I've always been a dark chocolate lover.

In the north of England they are called singing hinnies (hinny being Geordie for girl or woman. The singing comes from the sound they make on the girdle. In Orkney they are known as fatties cutties

That particular brand of Welshcakes (or Pics as they're known to some locally) are a really good commercial brand, one of the closest you can get to "homemade" unless you get them freshly made in a shop or bakery.
Welsh is a very difficult language for non speakers to learn, some of the sounds used in the language are not really used in in many other languages, take the double L, you produce that sound by resting the tip of your tongue against the back of your top two front teeth and expelling air out the sides of your tongue to make a sound similar to an S with a wet lisp.
I grew up bilingual (Welsh and English) which as a child was quite rare in Wales with only 5% of the country being able to speak Welsh at the time (there was a time when the Welsh language was outright banned in Wales until Henry the 8th decided it was a stupid law and changed it).
and Cymru (Wales) is pronounced CUM-REE.

Also s'mores, we dont seem to get Graham crackers here, unless its an american store. Hershey's is making its way into corner shops though. my sister made a 'british smore' with 2 choc chip cookies, marshmallow and cadburys chocolate and tbh it was really good.

Tan Y Castell is the biggest commercial Welsh bakery brand, the only one I have seen outside of Wales for sure. we don't need to make Smores in the UK, as we just buy Tunnocks Tea Cakes. which is a biscuit base with fluffy marshmallow on top, covered in chocolate.
you can melt the dark chocolate down in a pan and add milk to make a real hot chocolate drink or wait for it to cool for a shake.
the Whisky in the chocolate would not get you drunk, as the alcohol evaporates when cooking. that way you just left with the flavour/taste of it.
you cant really compare the handmade chocolates with anything else, as they are unique compared to anything branded.

    Bore da - Bo-rare-dah
Diolch - Dee-ol-ch (the ch is not like in church, but a scrapy sound from the back of your throat that’s sort of like ck, or like in the German Achtung)
Iechyd da - yeah-kid-dah (but with the scrapy throat ch).

RE: Lindsay's point about smores saying "the quality of the chocolate has to match the quality of the rest of the ingredients" - for what it's worth, we don't have Graham Crackers here either, but I believe our closest equivalent is a Digestive Biscuit. Personally when I was a young lad in the Scouts, we would make something pretty much identical to the equivalent of what you would call a smore, but with Cadbury chocolate and Digestive Biscuits! It's comfort food at it's finest, not the best for you but it's been there at least 50 years and going strong) and it's the next best thing to home made ones.
