- In this video I react to 101 facts about Wales. What an absolutely beautiful country with an amazing culture. After learning these facts I realize I'm going to need to spend an extended amount of time in Wales when I'm visiting the UK. With great nature areas and more castles per square mile than anywhere in the world, Wales is a dream location for exploration.

CUMRU AM BYTH, I know literally a few Welsh words, but a native english speaker, lol.
Another fun fact, Welsh rugby fans were the first to ever sing their countries national anthem before a sporting event. Wales vs New Zealand 1905.
I found that amazing when I learned it because the Welsh did it in response to New Zealand doing their haka. Singing the national anthem before sports is now ingrained across Western and world culture, even introverted and cut off places like the US, and it's all because of something the Maori did - imagine a native people on the receiving end of colonisation having such a huge impact on the world.
And the Welsh national anthem is the best! They sing it with such passion and love for their country. They appreciate their history instead of try to erase it
I am English but love hearing the Welsh national anthems being sung at sporting events.

The NHS was founded in 1948 by Aneurin (pronounced a nye rin, abbreviated to 'Nye') Bevan. This narrator didn't mention the Welsh name for Wales, Cymru. ('Come-ri'.)
And the NHS is entirely based on the the model employed in a welsh community
@@davidz2690 Yes, the "Miners' hospitals".
Coal powered the early Industrial Revolution. Indeed, it's kind of why that Revolution could happen, as coal (and later oil) have incredible energy density. It could power steam engines, which could drive machinery and trains. Coal unlocked a level of energy that was previously unheard of into the world.
So the mining of this "black gold" was massively important for industrialisation and Wales, being a hilly and mountainous landscape, has lots of coal to be mined. And Wales became the land of coal mines and coal miners.
But this was the early Industrial Revolution. There were no employment laws, no health and safety laws.
There were no employment contracts. No compensation if you're ill or injured. No such criminal offence as "corporate manslaughter" to make the mine owners care about your safety. And, at this time, the government also did nothing. No laws, no regulation, nothing.
So the miners did something remarkable. They got together and pooled contributions from their pay into a big pot of money... and then bought their own hospitals. They paid for doctors and nurses to staff these hospitals, and filled it with medical equipment.
If neither their employer nor the government were going to look after them, then they clubbed together to look after themselves.
And collectively owning a staffed hospital between them, any of these miners could go to "the Miners' hospital" and receive treatment "free at the point of use". It was free, of course, because they OWNED the hospital. They'd already paid for it and paid the wages of the doctors and nurses from the contributions they made out of their wages.
The miners - and their families, as they were not going to deny treatment to their own families - could just walk into "the Miners' hospital" and receive free universal healthcare. Ringing any bells?
Aneurin Bevan was a Welshman. He'd grown up in a community with a Miners' hospital. He'd seen how the system worked, and he'd seen that the system worked exceptionally well. Not-for-profit community-owned universal healthcare.
So when Labour came into government and he was made Labour's health minister, he knew what to do. He took the template of "the Miners' hospitals" and applied them nation-wide, creating the NHS. Everyone making a contribution from their pay to a "National Insurance" pot of money that is then used to build hospitals, pay doctors and nurses, kit the hospitals out with medical equipment.
Coal miners invented the NHS. Aneurin Bevan, being Welsh, knew all about this and applied the idea to the whole of the UK, when Labour came to power and put him in charge as Health Secretary.
By the way, this model of "collective action" by the miners to look after their own interests in the early Industrial Revolution? That's where trade unions were also invented.
If you enjoy universal healthcare and are protected by a trade union in your work, then thank Wales. They invented it and gave it to the world, "free at the point of use".
The castle on the screen at 7.38 is in Scotland. It is Eilean Donan in Dornie, near the Isle of Skye,
...and the castle at 18:30 looks remarkably like Edinburgh Castle.
As an Englishman, Wales is such a stunning place. The scenery, Celtic history, no nonsense but friendly people. Cardiff is a fantastic city worth seeing.
Wales is like a Northern Hemisphere version of New Zealand with Castles. Plus they love their choirs - they’re a singing country!

Llanfair, once you learn the Welsh alphabet, it's a phonetic language. Like Italian. I received One and sixpence, today seven and a half new pence, from my grandmother.Whose first language was Welsh.When my parents went t school, they were punished if they spoke Welsh in School.
The first castle you see at 6.32 is actually Eilean Donan castle in northern Scotland. 🏴😊

At points during the industrial revolution Swansea produced over half of the worlds copper, Merthyr Tydfil produced over half of the worlds iron and Cardiff was the worlds busiest port. The first £1,000,000 deal ever was signed in the Cardiff coal exchange and I believe that of all of the people who signed the United States deceleration of independence there were more welsh men than any other group. I think it's fair to say that Wales has had a disproportionate impact on the world given our size and status.
I was about to put up a shout for Swansea. Always overlooked but well worth a visit with more shore, bays than Cardiff and child friendly. Being disabled it is highly accessible too.
And you haven't mentioned slate tiling for roofs. When I worked in Japan, one of the buildings I walked by on my way to the office was roofed with Welsh slate from Dinorwic - the plaque on the wall said so!
Wasn't parys mountain the biggest copper mine in the world at one point and called the copper kingdom of Wales??

Yes, most of us can pronounce that place name because we know how the letters of the Welsh alphabet sound. We were all taught basic Welsh at school, so we can say Welsh words even if we don't understand what they mean.
Fin williams the same in ireland with irish ,if we see an irish word we can pronounce it even if we don't know what it means for the same reason
I’m English (sort of) but can generally pronounce Welsh words for that reason, even if I don’t know the meaning
And the first castle to be shown is a Scottish one. (6.28). It looks like Eilean Donan Castle in Kyle of Lochalsh.
The large castle you asked about was Windsor Castle but it is not in Wales, it’s about 20 miles from London.

I'm a mixture of English & Welsh by heritage & immediate family. Born and raised in England but currently living in North Wales and really getting in touch with that part of my heritage including learning the language. Your channel is fast becoming one of my favourites - I'm really enjoying watching you learn about our culture and heritage and it's giving me even more pride to be British! You should definitely pay a visit to North Wales when you come to the UK, it's truly beautiful!
PS: If you like Roman architecture and ruins, you should check out my hometown Chester which has it's original Roman walls & an excavated Roman amphitheatre that is 2200 years old.

My mother was born in Tredegar, and Aneurin Bevan was her MP. The NHS was founded in 1948 the year before she was born.
Coal mining is massive in wales. A good film to watch is a 1940s ish film is how green was my valley. Lovely film shows the hardships of coal mining it’s worth a look.
The zip line place is Called Zip World. There's a few of those. I've been on one that goes up to 75mph and the first line passes over a reservoir. It was called Zip tower.

In the 19th century, thousands of Welsh coal miners emigrated to the anthracite and bituminous mines of Pennsylvania, many becoming mine managers and executives. The miners brought organizational skills, exemplified in the United Mine Workers labour union
The NHS was set up based on a Welsh mining union health insurance. 🙂

I'm from Wales and only yesterday I recommended that if you came to the UK - at least come so see some Welsh castles. I'm a first language Welsh speaker (spoke Welsh before English) and my dad used to carve love spoons. There's so other sound on Earth like the Welsh national anthem being sung in the Principality Stadium with the roof closed. NOTHING comes close.

The gold has a unique colour due to its copper content it is a deep rosy colour. It’s sacristy makes it valuable and it’s beautiful.
I'm half welsh and regularly make visits to see my family in the north, where the are it's welsh first language but when I would go drinking with my cousin they and their friends all swap to English for my benefit but teach me bits of welsh over the night.
One particular night we a good 1/3 of all the people in the local pub collectively trying to teach me how to sing Calon Lân and properly pronounce 'LLanfair PG' and wouldn't let me leave till I got them down, it was a fantastic night. Now every time I visit the regulars make sure I can still say it and still remember how to sing.

I moved to Wales when i was 8 from England, Im now married to a Welsh redhead from the mountains and have a 11yr old daughter, i insist she needs to know Welsh as i dont think the language should ever be forgotten, i also recently took up carving lovespoons as a hobbie, the old way, a piece of wood and only a knife, no powertools or helping devices, just my hands and a single normal knife, its such fun to keep tradition alive.
I think I would prefer Wales to be tge best kept secret. Our language has survived far more than Scottish or Irish gaelic even though we are in closer proximity to England. Even the lyrics of our national anthem speaks about the survival of our language. It was our language that united us rather than a kingdom like the Scots or a benighted religion like Catholicism in Ireland. We were able to read the Bible in Welsh since 1588 which contributed greatly to the survival of Welsh and Welsh education in general
Wales had a more stable economy than ireland,meaning welsh speakers didn't have to leave to the same extent as ireland and there was no cataclysmic event like the famine or the highland clearances that caused a sudden decline in population. Its true that the welsh focused more on the language ,but in ireland it wasn't just catholicism that kept the focus from the language,its also the promotion of traditional irish sports as a marker of irish identity though the governing body uses the language quite a lot.

I live in North Wales and there are 3 castles in just a 10 min drive radius from my house. I live right on the coast and truly love having a view of the sea and the mountains 🌊🏔
Welsh culture is amazing, a living testament of resilience. The British side of my genealogy is English and Scottish, and I'm also Caribbean, but having grown up in Wales there's nowhere else on this isle that I feel so at home in. Beautifully singular culture, language, landscape, and vibe. Such a soulful country. I am very grateful to feel Welsh and speak Welsh. The agriculture is mostly upland sheep farming because the landscape is very very hilly/mountainous. Not really suited to growing crops on a large scale

Neither the Scots or English are genetically or Culturally British. Both are Converts that came about under the Stuarts and Hanoverians. It’s the Welsh who are the British!
The sheep are also a holdover from the late medieval period, during which the Kingdom of England's economy was basically powered by wool.
In England the old pastures were paved over with various things over the centuries, but the same cannot be said in Wales, Scotland has heaps of sheep in it's own right, for much the same reasons.

I’m actually from Llanrumney in Cardiff where Captain Morgan is said to have come from. There is actually a pub just outside of the town called The Captain Morgan.
I live in Llanfairfechan (pronounce it clan fire feck han) its close enough on the North Wales coast 12miles from Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobllllantysiliogogogoch, yes I can pronounce it as I learnt how to in primary school, Welsh being taught at all welsh schools. The overhead view of the castle and town is Conwy (pronounced con wee ) which is 7miles away, the zip world is 11 miles away. I love to see your reaction to our country and culture. Bara Brith is something you have to try, a Welsh fruit cake thats delicious. Love your videos and look forward to the next

I toured Wales one May and the scenery was green and lush and simply spectacular. I recommend May for the blossom and wildflowers.

Bless your heart for trying to get your tongue around the welsh language. My late husband came from Manchester he lived in our little welsh village for 33 years and he couldn't pronounce welsh words. Caerphilly Castle is not far from me Cardiff Castle is beautiful. Yes we can say Llanfair pg.the welsh have fire in their blood and song in the heart
Wales has rich deposits of slate, coal, tin and gold. So it was mined extensively.
Our wedding rings were made with Welsh gold by a much-missed artisan in Ruthun, North Wales. All of my wife's earring were also made by him over the years, as were our wrist torques - hers in gold and mine in silver.

I went to Grove Park Grammar School in Wrexham in the late '50s'. Welsh was part of the normal curriculum, but those who spoke it at home attended so-called 'special Welsh' classes. All of my taid's family were native Welsh speakers with English as a second language - when they bothered. Visiting my great aunt Fan in Caerestyn was always fun - she had only ever spoken English to my mom or me.
Wales is most famous for the operatic tradition. From Catherine Jenkins and Dame Gwyneth Jones to Bryn Terfel and numerous other baritones and tenors. Their choral history is also second to none. They also have a great comedic pool. Their bards and poets added into the mix makes for a huge cultural heritage. I can pronounce the long place name, but only after a couple of glasses of merlot, lol. As for the sheep, Welsh lamb is the best in the world.

When you go to Wales, you just HAVE to go horse riding on a hack!!!! When I went it rained like a BITCH! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 and it was the BEST fun I have ever had!!! I wasn't expecting to gallop (never done before), but the horses KNEW they were going home to the stables and just bolted galloping!! I managed to hold on 😳just. My wellies (boots) were FULL of water but I just emptied them went to the pub for a few bevvies!! 😁👍 Obviously the horses were very glad to get back to their stables. I LOVE Wales!!!! Wales is amazing!!!! The people are VERY friendly! ❤ (I live in Norfolk) xx
It was a Welsh regiment that defended Rorkes Drift against the Zulu. ZULU, starring Michael Cain.
No mate in 1879 they were an English regiment (2nd Warwickshires). They did become a Welsh regiment until 1881. 😉😊

living in Bristol and doing deliveries I often get to drive into wales its one of my favorite places to drive

Lovespoons are beautiful and were traditionally a test of the woodcarving ability of young men. A man would carve one for the girl he wanted to marry, making it as ornate as possible,to prove that he was skilled with his hands and thus capablee of supporting a wife.
I wear a welsh gold Love spoon necklace. A gift from my parents for my 21st

Steve, Check out Cardiff's very beautiful limestone city centre. In this area (often called the Civic Centre)
the buildings are all starkly white but they are separated by pink-coloured roads and there
are many lush and colourful gardens. The area includes the War Memorial, the National Museum of
Wales, Cardiff University (which I went to) and Cardiff City Hall. It is just behind
Cardiff Castle on North Road. The area is also sometimes known as CATHAYS PARK. You can spend
quite a few wonderful hours here. So pretty and so typical of a national capital.
I am Welsh on both sides of my family, as well as English. A touch of Scots and Irish too. I looked up my Welsh ancestry and they were from Carnarvon and Angelsey. The old religion which still exists is Druidism, Anglesey is the Druids headquarters, the Romans tried to wipe them out. Romans mined in Britain, salt and tin mainly. Coal was mined in Wales and England. Tin was mined in Cornwall, some of the Cornish mine buildings still exist and look very creepy. There is only one gold mine in Wales with limited amounts of gold it is spelt "Clogau". Scotland had silver mines and gemstones. Many places had salt mines. Wales was renowned for its quarries of slate and stone, Stonehenge is made from Welsh stone.
@steve i can recommend time team if you're interested in archeology. They travel all over british isles and ireland. Some episodes in europe. But loads of background info on castles, medieval towns, old languages, old trades and skills

My mother was Welsh and her father was a coal miner, and one of my cousins was in thr Treorchy ( pronounced Tree or Key) Male Voice Choir. One of the best choirs in the world. So please check them out. You will be blown away. Tom Jones is Welsh
A lot of Wales is mountainous and moorland. National Parks. Snowdonia, and The Brecon Beacons

One of my favourite past times -horse riding, is actually a great way to get out to see nature. There's plenty of paces that do treks for all levels of ability, and it does save the legs... kind of. lol
a reason for a number of the things here is the hilly mountainous terrain. I have welsh relatives, my sister lives in south wales her children learn welsh at school. the trick to welsh language is learning what the letters are and their pronounciation. but also it has a few more vowels than english.
The castle with the bridge that you said "wow" to is Ellen Donan castle in west Scotland
Wales are the 2nd least populated country represented at this year's world cup, only the hosts Qatar have less but so far they've been one of the loudest group of fans out there! Incredible what the Welsh have done through history, so many famous Welsh people that lots of people don't realise are Welsh too!
I was lucky enough to live in South West Wales for 4 years and my mum and brother still live there and refuse to leave😂

Find a Glamorgan sausage recipe and give them a go. They're bloody lush! Caerphilly cheese will be hard to get hold of, so look for something mild, crumbly and a little salty. A delicatessen is your best bet.
All gold has specific qualities with regards to the area of origin., Welsh gold being from such a small area is more precious as it is less common

I live on the England Wales border - there are 5 castles within 10 miles of my house, plus the local city was fortified with castle walls….all to keep control of the unruly Welsh. In earlier times, prior to the mass castle building, there was a huge earth wall stretching along the border, much of which still exists - Offas Dyke

To be fair Eilean Donon was the castle which was used by the video maker on the video that he was reviewing 0 so they got it wrong to start with . Unfortunate that they used one of the most famous and most widely pictured castles in Scotland to illustrate Wales

We have Townhouse's here in the UK as well, accommodation is spread over 3 floors. Where a terraced house will have 2 floors. Some houses have cellars or basement. In Cambridge City UK it is very common to have a basement which is used as a kitchen dining room.
Not a channel plug, but if you really do want to see the Welsh landscape and Wales in general, we have a lot of vids covering both north and south Wales. North has more tall mountains, like Snowdonia, whereas the south has more hills, like the Beckon Beckons (where the SAS [special forces] train and run Selection). The iron and slate mines are in north Wales (not sure if there's any in the south).

I support this comment wholeheartedly, having put a number of my relatives in US and Canada onto the 'Driving Britain' site.
The purity and colour of clogau gold makes it rare, beautiful and world renowned. Also the tradition of singing a country's anthem before a sporting match started in Wales in the early 1900s this happened because Wales was playing New Zealand and singing the national anthem was Wales' response to the Hakka.

I live near Cardiff and very proud to be Welsh, my favourite holiday destination is Pembrokeshire such a beautiful coast line!
Mystical Misty - I spent childhood holidays at St. Davids, (Whitesands actually). The smallest Cathedral in Britain is in St. Davids which qualifies it to be a City. Pembrokeshire was called, "little England beyond Wales".

I'm from the famous Rhondda valley. Pronounced Ron thaaa. Which is approximately 15 miles long. It's the shape of the letter Y. When mining was at its peak, the Rhondda had over 60 coal mines. Think about it! 60+ mines within 15 miles.

In there I heard a familiar accent, so I went to investigate, turns out we were from four houses away on King Street Gelli!

I've been to Hadrian's Wall but better than as briefly mentioned in this video Caerwent is the village surrounded by a Roman wall 3 to 4 m high which you can walk around with some low stone wall excavations inside amazing place and his virtually unknown 😊

I watched Aberfan happen on TV in Derby, England and it has affected me my entire life. The images were just so dreadful. I was only a little kid at the time and I must have cried for 2 days.
