This is the first time I have seen a reaction to Richie Kotzen. It is really great to see him recognized for his incredible talent . This concert has been on repeat in my listening a possibly unhealthy amount. Catch him live and you will be blown away. Great video
Great you reacted to this. Richie passes so many by….their loss! One of the best singers around and truly one of the guitar greats. Saw him recently in Hamburg opening for Extreme when, quite frankly, they should have opened for him.
The entire Mother Head's Family Reunion album is pure gold from start to finish. Not only can he sing, but his guitar skills are incredible - this song barely scratches the surface. He often doubles what he's playing on guitar with his voice, sometimes for extended passages. You'd never believe this guy was in Poison back in the day.
Its a phenomenal album, kotzen has such a varied style, lots of hendrix and soul a lot of funk and blues, and his voice is arguably better than his playing. One in a billion.
Richie is so good & so cool. Very glad to have taken the time to listen to him & this vid thanks. Great that your supporting him. The latest stuff ie Nomad album & Smith/Kotzen album. Is fantastic to. Just wish I had a little toe full of his talent, awesome. Thanks
After 1st hearing Richie's playing in 89 when Mike Varney picked him up on Shrapnel Records with his 1st instrumental album as a shred guitar player and then his 1st vocal release Fever Dream when he shifted to a more bluesy style I was hooked, then watching him construct songs playing all the instruments pulled my ear in another direction, but I always thought Chris Cornell singing sounded like a thinner version of Richie's voice, since I had been listening to Richie so much earlier. Love everyone's comments & how they express their story with Richie's music - Great post thank you
My memory of him was more with his guitar shredding, this was a pleasant surprise! It’s got a really nice bluesy vibe, his vocals were excellent! Nice analysis as always 🌹
Richie is my absolute favorite!! I have seen this trio live twice and they are beyond fantastic!! So incredible to see and hear them in person. It's such an experience....the great songs, musicianship, vocals, the overall vibe. I could go on and on about Richie and the band all day!
You are so effortlessly hilarious, while still seriously managing to inform the uninformed. And I, for one, greatly appreciate it, with a grateful smile. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and humor, simultaneously;)! Cheers!
Richie is a legend in the guitar community, sadly the general public hasn’t caught on. This entire concert is fantastic. Another great one from this concert you might like is ‘Love is Blind’, or if you want to check him out with the Winery, Dogs, try Oblivion, or I’m No Angel.
At last, someone is reviewing the voice of Richie Kotzen, one of the finest voices on the rock/blues scene. He had to change his way of singing in the late '90s because of vocal cord hemorrhage, and you can clearly hear the difference in the grain at the start of his career.
I follow Richie since 1989. He was discovered by Mike Varney (Shrapnel records). Back in the days, it was pure shredding. Then Richie became a singer, and year after year, a better singer. Now he is a complete artist. My fav albums are "Mother Head's Family Reunion" (1994) witch is funky, "The Inner Galactic Fusion Experience" (1995) witch is instrumental fusion at it's finest, and "Go Faster" (return of the Mother Head's Family Reunion in 2007) witch is gold. Of course I love all the stuff he created with Mike Pornoy and Billy Sheehan. As Mike is back in Dream Theater, I guess The Winery Dogs is now a band from the past. I like what Richie did at the lead guitar in Poison in 1993 ("Native Tongue" album) and Mr Big in the early 2000's too. About his solo career, "Slow" (2001) is the best album. This song, "Remember", is on "Get Up" (2004), witch is not bad at all. If you like his guitar side, you must listen to is collab with Greg Howe. They recorded 2 fusion diamonds : "Tilt" (1995) and "Project" (1997). Mind blowing ! I pre-ordered "Nomad", the new one, because I own every fucking record he made, even stuff like L.A. Blues Authority or Mikazuki in Rock.
Richie is one of my favorite singer-songwriters, and the fact he can play the guitar like no other makes him an elite talent. I saw him with his other band, The Winery Dogs, last year at the House of Blues in New Orleans. His last solo album was released on his 50th birthday and is called 50 for 50, and it contains a track called "Confession" that blows my mind every time I listen to it. It truly showcases his enormous vocal range and, of course, his uniquely gifted skills as a guitarist. I have not seen him perform it live, but the studio version is truly stellar. I would love to see your reaction, and if not check it out just to enjoy his gifts.
He did a cool jazz fusion album that took me by surprise. I think it’s called the intergalactic jazz fusion experience. There’s another one called Vertue that just goes to show how skilled he is. You’re probably already aware, but I figured I’d throw it out there.
Thanks, @@slappywag7210! I do own the Vertú album, but don't yet have The Inner Galactic Fusion Experience. I have all The Winery Dogs albums and several of Richie's solo albums. Heck, I even own Native Tongue from when he was with Poison. Oh, and I have the Smith/Kotzen album as well. Like I said, he's one of my favorites. 😁
I saw him with The Winery Dogs twice last year. Great band and he is phenomenal; one of the best singer/guitar players around. He started out as a hyper-shredding guitarist but has discovered his true talent as a great writer, singer and musician. He is top-notch.
Very underrated artist. I discovered his music 11 years ago when he did a cover/tribute to a song from a japanese band, thats when i looked him up and became a fan. He has a new album coming out calling Nomad.
Richie Kotzen is a musical and vocal phenomenal beast. On his solo stuff he plays all the instruments and does all the vocals... Is earlier stuff includes mother heads family reunion, he was also in Poison as previously mentioned and he was also a pretty important part of Mr Big for a while. I'm guessing that's where he got to be tight with Billy Sheehan on bass and why they play together now in The winery dogs. I'm a huge fan of Richie's and checked out as much material as I can of his. He's also done a phenomenal job of covering some Motown songs and kind of breathing some rock edge new life into them..🎉🎉
I'm really tired of a lot of people saying Richie's voice sounds like Chris Cornell. And some people say Richie is imitate Chris. The person who most influenced his singing style was Terence Trent Darby. He was mentioned it in some interview
Thanks buddy, people doesn't know much about Richie himself so ofc they're going to compare it with him. Imagine when they listen to Cochise cover at Tony Macalpine's benefit concert 😂
@@mazzle657 in saying that I happen to luv Richie’s ability to meld his voice & guitar 🎸 as One! I’ve known about D’Arby for 40 years but some never have especially those who grew up listening to Chris Cornell. Richie is definitely influenced by the Philly soul sound like I am having grown up near there. He’s soulful & can shred with the best of them!
Richie was around before Chris Cornell so it would be the other way around. I’ve also seen in interviews where he said Rod Stewart was another one of his vocal inspirations.
*Richie Kotzen's* one of the best of the best; such a great all around musician on every level. I've seen him three times solo and once with the *Winery Dogs* and have tickets for two shows in October. He's among the best I've seen and heard and live and can't get enough. Not only is he a great guitar player but his soulful voice and range is amazing.. I thank you for your assessment of Mr. Kotzen. I am sure he would appreciate your critique!.. This was from his Tokyo concert some years ago.
You are amazing! Excellent presentation, and you really hit all the right spots where his voice and playing and where the song stand out and grab you. Brilliant!
I primarily know Richie Kotzen because of The Winery Dogs. You are very correct about his vocals being a continuation of his guitar. The Winery Dogs have a song off their debut album called "Regret" that is in a similar vein to this one. Their rockers are awesome, but "Regret" gets me in the feels every time. They also have a cool live cover of "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" that's worth seeing, along with their harder material.

The interesting part about Richie's singing is that his technique used to be a lot more shouty and strained in his younger days. From what I remember he actually did have to get a surgery for nodes twice and after that he changed his technique to be a lot lighter, like it is now.
I still cannot believe how far he has grown from being a teenager playing lead guitar for Poison. Love Richie, it is like you take one part Chris Cornell, one part Jeff Beck and a whole lot of Prince and you have Richie Kotzen. Great drummer, piano player and bassist also.

I've been Listening to Richie for Years!! Hes so ffnn underrated!!! I like him better than Chris Cornell Hes been out since the early 1990's He went against the grain!!!
I can’t be partial because he’s from Pa and so am I. He’s talented like Prince in that he plays many instruments, records at his home, and is SO talented. He’s VERY sexy as well. 🙌🏼☮️
Richie originally had no interest in singing. I think when he was still with shrapnel, they told him they wanted him to sing and he was like I’m not a singer and they told him well, you better figure it out.😂 if I’m not mistaken, he mentioned that he took a couple cues from Rod Stewart and Bob Seger for his vocals and then he released Fever Dream, which became one of my all-time favorites among everything else he’s done.
Check the 'Fooled around and fell in love' cover by the Winery Dogs. I actually hear a lot of Cornell in his voice, not Jeff Buckley. I see TTD being mentioned below. That's also not a bad influence, but his tembre is different.
Don’t you just luv when critics specifically come to knock a performer’s articulation? 😂 These people have no life or imagination. Or actually never listened to a soulful performance. You can’t lump Richie into a grunge or metal style because he has a deep love of soul, jazz & fusion.
Is it bad form to make negative comments? I'm ready to be crucified and flayed alive. It didn't grab me. From the comments so far I get that he's like Chris Cornell, Michael Bolton and Al Green singing an Aretha Franklin song. Maybe I'm being too harsh as it's nearly impossible to be original. My comments are very spontaneous and possibly ill conceived. After a while I often bend to the knowledge, wisdom and experience of our dear Lolli. Apologies to Richie lovers.
I know you just did this a few months ago.. But you should really look into his version of this on the Bootlegged in Brazil. Just look up Live in Brazil. That version of this song is 100x better than this.. vocally and guitar playing. It's intense and the entire crowd feels it. You can just tell. I've never heard or seen this version but I like it.. just not as much as the Sao Paulo version. That version is in his prime in his solo career. You could do an entire new video on the same song and just be amazed. th-cam.com/video/_I1FnNSbjN8/w-d-xo.html
@@Jasoncremeans73 Chris was born 7 years before Richie Kotzen, he was fronting Sound Garden 7 years before Richie was playing in Hairband Poision. So how was Richie doing it first?

Had a rock chops instructional video in 89 that is legendary in the guitar community. He’s released about solo 20 albums. The Chris Cornell comparison gets old. It’s in the comments section on every single Richie Kotzen video. Someone’s got to comment how he sounds like Chris Cornell, even though he was on the scene before Chris Cornell.
I love good articulation too. There's nothing like a bit of clarity to complete the song. Even the subtitles couldn't cope. [Music] I understand Gacharic Spin better and they sing in Japanese. Actually it was a bit clearer as it went on.
@@thedryparn1279 I have one more thought while I have your ear/eye... I love 'Sam Perry - Only Attraction' and I can't understand most of that. So I guess I'm not being fair. I think he used up all his energy on the instrumentation (which he creates with his voice) before he gets to the lyrics. And then he leaves nothing in the tank. Hang in there till 2:30 if you give it a listen. He uses a strange vowels for an Australian which doesn't help. Kind of American I guess.

you shud try to watch & analyze the Live in Sao Paolo version also 😉 the best one 🤟
❤Richie Kotzen
Phenomenal guitarist.
Sounds so much like Chris Cornell. Love it.
Agreed but Richie is way better in so many ways in my opinion
Actually, Chris sounds like Richie. Richie was putting out albums before anybody knew who Chris was.
@@mr.e8432 I loved Chris but Richie has always been my favorite. He's in a whole other league.. Honestly a league of his own. He's the fuggin best man. IMHO
Chris Cornell sounds like Richie Kotzen!

I've been Listening to Richie for Years!! Hes so ffnn underrated!!!
I like him better than Chris Cornell
Hes been out since the early 1990's
He went against the grain!!!
I can’t be partial because he’s from Pa and so am I. He’s talented like Prince in that he plays many instruments, records at his home, and is SO talented. He’s VERY sexy as well. 🙌🏼☮️
Listen to Your Entertainer by Richie. A completely different vibe. Funky!!!
Please react to his new song Insomnia!
looks and sound exactly like Chris“ Cornell !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don’t you just luv when critics specifically come to knock a performer’s articulation? 😂 These people have no life or imagination. Or actually never listened to a soulful performance. You can’t lump Richie into a grunge or metal style because he has a deep love of soul, jazz & fusion.
Winery Dogs!!!
Strongly recommend checking out Ritchie Kotzen as a member of the band Winery Dogs. Song choice is irrelevant...they're all great.
God bless!!
Please please analyze/react to Emma kok singing "voila". it's amazing
11:50 😮
If Michael Bolton and Chris Cornell had a baby...
Watch the Sao Paolo version. Much different "analysis" i'll bet.
Winery dogs are awesome
Wild watching someone fall in love……❤
Now watch fear from the same show.
that was some soulful moanin'
He sort of gives me Chris Cornell vibes.
Edit: Reading some replies here, I see I am not the only one thinking so.
Apologies to Richie lovers.
watch the brazil live version, its x100 better
I know you just did this a few months ago.. But you should really look into his version of this on the Bootlegged in Brazil. Just look up Live in Brazil. That version of this song is 100x better than this.. vocally and guitar playing. It's intense and the entire crowd feels it. You can just tell. I've never heard or seen this version but I like it.. just not as much as the Sao Paulo version. That version is in his prime in his solo career. You could do an entire new video on the same song and just be amazed. th-cam.com/video/_I1FnNSbjN8/w-d-xo.html
just a reminder that "kotzen" means vomit in german 🧐
Why do people insist on posting this childish crap??
Chris Cornell is back?
Better 😉
Imo The winery dogs stuff isn;t as good as the stuff with Adrien Smith from Iron Maiden. They both sing and play guitar with a rock/blues feel.
Sounds really similar to Chris Cornell. Even for a second I thought he was imitating him and his looks.
He was doing this before Chris Cornell. I love Chris, but credit where it's due
@@Jasoncremeans73 Chris was born 7 years before Richie Kotzen, he was fronting Sound Garden 7 years before Richie was playing in Hairband Poision. So how was Richie doing it first?
@@Jasoncremeans73 Not taking anything from Richie, but you're wrong.
Complete rip-off.
@@McShaganpronouncedShaegenRichie had a solo career, Poison wasn’t his first band. He put out his first album in 87/88, before anyone had even heard of Cornell.
Great voice but the man needs to learn to articulate. I can't understand a thing he sings.
I love good articulation too. There's nothing like a bit of clarity to complete the song. Even the subtitles couldn't cope. [Music] I understand Gacharic Spin better and they sing in Japanese. Actually it was a bit clearer as it went on.
@@marklane58 Yeah, i find it really lazy not to find the energy to get your words out to the audience. A little egoistic.
@@thedryparn1279 I think I just sent a worse comment. Ooops! Guess I'll see what happens. 😱 Have a good day.
Really? Then that must be a you problem. I can understand every word.
