It is cool to see Richie Kotzen getting some mainstream recognition with the Winery Dogs. He's had a steady solo career for years but the Winery Dogs gave him a bigger platform. He is a monster player.

Poison was 20 years ago, and thank goodness he’s moved well beyond that. Couple of good songs on that record he wrote though. I hope he makes enough dough to keep it going - they have to sell out a lot of shows to pay all 3 guys, all of whom deserve it and more

@@cc_1983 Native Tongue is musically and technically, probably the the best album in Poison's entire discography. It's also the least "Poison" one. Ritchie's hallmark is all over that album. It's more like a RK solo album than a Poison one.

This is unrelated to this particular post, but I was wondering if he only covers rock. I listened to rap/hip hop for the past 20 years (I know, huge 180) but there are actually brilliant people in that genre as well. I would love to know his thoughts on rap musicians, but that might be completely out of the question since it looks like he mostly focuses on rock.

Richie's got his own thing regarding plectrum use. As far as I know some many years ago he forgot or dropped his pick and had to play with his right hand fingers. He's been sticking to that to the best of my knowledge. That makes for a great legato playing and fast tapping passages. A unique style in his own right. - Great comments and reaction by Justin right here. Thanks for the post.

Having photographed Rickie Kotzen solo and with Smith/Kotzen ( his band with Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden) he doesn't wear rings when playing live. His time with Poison was limited to one album Native Tongue during a time when CC had quit the band. If you want hear him drop more f-bombs check out his solo song You Can't Save Me.

Omg does this perhaps open the door for reactions to Portnoy's main band (nowadays), The Neal Morse Band?

I believe Richie had mentioned in an interview for their 2nd record that he was influenced by The Darkness for their song, Captain Love.

When I heard this song I thought "yeah, same old stuff... but they do it so good that it 's just awesome" and turned it up and let it play. I don't own a single disc with Kotzen on it, but saw him about 15 years ago, and he pulled off the blues guitarist/songer-songwriter/rock star thing to the level you'd expect for his resume.

Mr. Big used to be my favourite band and I'm a huge band of both Paul Gilbert and Richie Kotzen (sometimes I think I even preferred the band with Richie). RK has a good number of great solo albums that you should check out: "Return Of Mother Head's Family Reunion", "Into The Black", "Peace Sign", "24 hours" and so many more! He's very stylistically versatile in both his singing and playing of the ol' gee-tar.

I still have my guitar world from the early 90s with Kotzen, Nuno, and Reb BEach on the cover. All 3 monster amazing guitar players and songwriters FTW Can't believe Kotzen does NOT use a pick.

I bought Talas's 'Sink Your Teeth Into That' in 1983 after a record store guy who knew I played bass put on Billy's bass solo for me. I was so blown away. The song 'Shy Boy' was on it as well, which was made famous by DLR band with Billy and Vai. I always wanted to hear them take on 'High Speed On Ice'

Ritchie Kotzen/Adrian Smith is a pretty decent album, too.
CC Deville was the original guitarist of Poison, but Richie Kotzen took over after he'd left the band. You weren't completely incorrect.

Killer review of a true supergroup!
Justin! You can get those "Stratty" tones on a Les Paul Deluxe or a P90 equipped LP.
    Starting point:
Mid position. Neck volume and tone wide open. Bridge tone open, dial in volume until it gets "Strattish".
    Season to taste.
    Cheers!
