Finesse Tactics for Midwinter Bluegill

- Big bluegill can be notoriously fussy during the midwinter doldrums. Jason Mitchell joins Tony Mariotti to share some tips and tactics for when bluegill requires downsizing and finesse. Big bluegills are coveted and highly desired by ice anglers but these fish can be tough to catch come midwinter when the snow piles up and the days get short.
We search for giant bluegills in western Minnesota near Detroit Lakes. Tremendous area for panfish with literally hundreds of lakes to explore.
We discuss classic midwinter bluegill locations when fish pull out over deeper, soft-bottom basins with heavier snowfall on top of the ice. Top presentation tips are shared for how to trigger tough fish with light line and finesse jigs. Additional insights on midwinter bite windows and how to catch fish that are not in the mood.

Great to see you in my neck of the woods! Great video Jason thank you!
You are in a great area 👍
I just got on this pattern a week ago where I'm at. I was fishing a soft transition zone from shallow weeds to a basin in 18 fow. Caught a lot of nice 'gills. Thanks for these great informative videos
Great job by yourself and Tony! DL and Ottertail area is a special area for some great panfish!
Nice catching big gills I'm starting to get big ones again where I fish where I fish all the time my honey hole is next to lake Minnetonka few minutes down the road. Caught my pb bass outta there at 7.5lbs still big ones in there. Love seeing others in my area catching nice fish. Just subbed to ya.
Love them big bulls
Im from Louisiana n luv 2 🐟 fish in winter but nevr put my hands in ice..nice fish..!
I ran into stacks of fish like this yesterday while fishing- I tried everything short of a stick of dynamite to get them to bite- I'm pretty sure if I had gotten to the spot before first light and fished to about 9-10 in the morning I would have caught fish. I was there at 10 and had to head home at noon...not one fish. A few weeks ago I was catching crappies/bluegills on that spot hand over fist.
I would love to be there fishing 🎣 them are great fish and you know what your doing . But to cold for me lol
Really enjoyed the video. Fishing big gills is one of my favorite ways of fishing especially through the ice on ultra light tackle. Plus they’re one of the best eating fresh water fish there are imo. I’ve been waiting to catch a 10 1/2” gill to put on the wall but just haven’t been able to do it. Caught one many years ago but didn’t have any $ to do it then.
Those are my small fish lol.
@@cjnedeau4801 so a 10 1/2” inch gill is a small gill to you? Ah you may want to wake up you’re dreaming or can’t read a ruler…
@@kross1261 bruh I literally have 13 inchers on my wall bud which you’re lil blue gill head ahh
@@kross1261 come to my sticks buddy out here in Michigan we only catch big fish so🤷🏻♂️
@@cjnedeau4801 so you have state record size blue gills hanging on your wall? Sounds like you’re dreaming. Bottom line to say a 10 1-2” blue gill is considered small makes your opinion questionable to say the least.
Absolutely love your videos, what kind of reel are you using
Clam Gravity Spooler
@@JasonMitchellOutdoors thank you jason
What model/power/action rods are you using?
28 inch Dead Meat Rod
His first fish, "that's just a great eating fish right there"
Me in Michigan "it's a giant! What a monster!"
What are those back specs parasites?
Jason what is the extra device you have attached to your vexilar puck?
Ice Defense for keeping the hole open when it is cold.
Who sell them?
Check out Scheels
How're you able to tell the difference in bottom with a vexilar?
Turn your range out so you can look for the double echo. In other words, in twenty feet of water, see if you get a echo on the forty foot mark. Harder bottoms will send a second or even third echo while soft bottoms will give you just one echo. We will try to put together a video on it. Great question.
Them DOLDRUMS eh...
