    Well once again here I sit in PA at the end of the year with NO ICE. I WILL be in this neck of the woods next winter for a week. I just subbed tonight so pardon my ignorance but do you guide or have guides that you recommend? THX Tom

    Nice perch! Wish we had good Pan fish lakes like that here in Utah. A group of us our headed to Lake Cascade in Idaho in 2 weeks. 3rd trip. Can't wait!

    Devils lake is a bucket list place for me. What is considered “late ice” on devils lake. I’d like to go when I can get around on a ATV.

    Jumbo perch are the best. I also think they are one of the tastiest freshwater fish!

    Jason, I finally got a sled and I remember you had a video where you mentioned you had added I-bolts and a longer rope to your sled, for when you walk in. I am going through them all. DO you remember how long of rope you recommend and size? i thought you had a wrap around the rope for comfort.

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just put eye bolts into the sled and take a twenty foot piece of rope with clasps in each end for clipping into the eye bolts. The longer rope can just drape over a shoulder and makes it much easier for hauling your gear.

    Question how those fish survive when they're brought up from 30ft of water?

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We spent most of the day between 20-28 feet. Most of the fish didn’t show any signs of barotrauma. We did catch a few perch and one white bass that had barotrauma that we did keep and didn’t show. Barotrauma can be a moving target as far as exact depth. Of course if we see air bladders popped out or bulging eye balls, we keep the fish but if there is no signs of barotrauma in less than thirty feet of water, we feel comfortable releasing the fish.

    Do devil's and cascade jumbo perch fish somewhat the same?

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. Big difference is that Cascade is a reservoir so the structure is different. Cascade perch are much more aggressive and we fished much higher off the bottom.

    How much snow was on the ice? We have a trip booked for next week.

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is over twenty inches now but it is drifting and blowing around so some places less and other places, the snow is hard. There are a few roads getting plowed but you might want to bring tracks if you have them.

    How many year cycle do the perch go down and how long do they increase

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not very simple, these fish grow fast but don’t live past six years usually. You need big year classes of fish coming in but predation can have a big impact. Pike numbers really seem down and I believe that is helping the perch.

      Use it all the time for finding fish and works great for crappies that are suspended but haven’t found forward facing sonar as effective for fish right to the bottom over deep water.

    Its great you guys are throwing them back and showing people on the tube to throw those fish with trophy genetics back... just because you have a fish species like humans not all of them have the genetics to grow big so if you want big fish you throw the trophies back to spawn and get those genetics in the gene pool.

  • @johnfalk7316
    @johnfalk7316 ปีที่แล้ว

    i cant believe your throwing them back knowing you are killing them anyway over 20 feet you are wasting a rescore just to look politicly correct what a wast

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the fish would have shown signs of barotrauma, we would have kept them. You can plainly see the air bladders aren’t blown up and their eyes aren’t bulging. If there is no signs of barotrauma, the fish will release fine. The depth for which barotrauma occurs is a moving target. Some days you see it from 25 feet, other days it’s thirty feet. You almost always see it past 35 feet. Have seen fish from as shallow as 15 feet with barotrauma.
