Darryl Worley - I Just Came Back From War (Official Music Video)

  • The first thing I did when that plane finally landed was kiss the ground
The next thing I did was to go find my friends down at the old hangout
Drank some beer and talked a lot about old times
But when the booze finally hit Billy Joe Grimes
He said I don't know what it is, but you seem different to me
I said I just came back from a place where they hated me
    and everything I stand for
A land where our brothers are dying for others who don't even care anymore
If I'm not exactly the same good old boy that you ran around with before
I just came back from a war
The very next morning I took a walk through the neighborhood
I thought it's been so long since I've been in a place where everything is good
People laughing and children were playing
And as I watched em I found myself praying
Lord keep em safe here at home in the land of the free
Cuz I just came back from a place where they hated me
    And everything I stand for
A land where our brothers are dying for others who don't even care anymore
If I'm not same little freckled face boy
That grew up in that house next door
I just came back from a war
I hope you cherish this sweet way of life
And I hope you know that it comes with a price
I just came back from a place where they hated me
    And everything I stand for
A land where our brothers are dying for others who don't even care anymore
Chances are I never will be the same
    I really don't know anymore
I just came back from a war
I just came back from a war
    [background]
    You dont know me (repeated)
I just came back from a war

I've been fighting for freedom here at home for years. I'll tell you, being an honest policeman is hard these days. I try to protect the innocent and it gets more difficult daily. I will not give up, but pray for the ones who still believe in the truth and the constitution. God Bless America Again.

I love how this video shows the brotherhood. It crosses generations cultural and military branches. A WW2 Code Talker, A Vietnam/Korea vet/a Desert Storm/ and a current vet. Male female if matters not. Brotherhood is bigger than all that

Thank you for writing this song.
22 Year Navy Veteran, 3 combat tours, (OIF 2004/2005). Yes I did kiss the ground when I landed in the USA.
I hope songs like this help those who did not serve understand the emotions, blank stares, depression, that are a part of PTSD. Its been 15 years since I retired, and it doesn't take much to bring me back to the sandbox. Thank you to all my brothers and sisters who I served with and those still serving, stay vigilant, stay healthy, and God Bless.

Darryl, I've been a fan of yours from the beginning. You played for us in Afghanistan around Christmas 2003, I was the first in line for your autograph afterwards until we were called for a QRF mission and had to run to the airfield. Thankfully the lady that managed the PX at the time took my CD and got it signed for me! I received it from her a few days later when we returned, it's still one of my most treasured memories from my time in service.
THANK YOU for taking the time to visit us and play for us. I can't help feeling like our country needs another patriotic song sung by Darryl Worley.

The image of them laying on the ground would never leave me. That is why I mentor kids as Army JROTC instructor so they can become better and love this United States more than life.

I just thought you might need a word or two from another GRUNT. I got out of the Corps (Force Recon) back in Dec 92, and I still can see the BROTHERS I lost. I can smell the cordite in the air, taste the sweat on the air, hear the smack of the bullets that took them out, taste the blood on the breeze, and smell that smell of death. I lost 6 of my BROTHERS when I was in, in places we were never in. Their families got the "Your son was killed in a training accident" speech and a closed and sealed casket. Damn fine men every one.
My dad did 6 tours in Viet-Nam, Republic of. He says he can still see EVERY guy he lost. IT NEVER GOES AWAY. It may fade from your mind, but then you pick up a sound or smell and you are right back there. Seeing it all happen again.
YOU will be fine. If you start having ANY PROBLEMS ,PLEASE do yourself and your family a favor and get help. I am SERIOUS about this. The last thing any VET wants is find out another VET was having trouble and did not get help and did something that can not be undone.
I admit to missing the Corps, I was DAMNED GOOD at my job. The thing I miss most is the guys standing beside me. We would do ANYTHING to PROTECT the guy on either side of us. That is something that civilians and NONCOMBATANTS will NEVER UNDERSTAND.
I kissed the ground EVERY TIME I came home. There is something that can not be explained about being back on AMERICAN SOIL!!!!!

I would not call it WORDS OF WISDOM, more like experience and age along with a lot of time trying to get images out if my head that I TRULY wish were not there.
That and I honestly don't think anyone should have to try to deal with that stuff alone. Not that doctors that have never seen someone they care about more than can be explained to a civilian will EVER ACTUALLY be in a position to help.
      Good luck.

Operations: Enduring Freedom & Iraqi Freedom. Also he was in Spec. Ops. He received a handful commendations, medals & citations. When he did came home from his tour of duty. He was a bit quite, kept to himself but being surrounded by his family who love, respect & supports him. His wife & family has been by his side. He done so much & seen things, that no would hasn't seen or been through. Now me, I'm carrying on & doing my part to serve my country. I'm on my 3 yr in the Army. Having my share as same as he did. Being memorial day weekend. Those who have family members that are veteran's. Take the time to be with & listen to them. Knowing they done & what they sacrifice & served our country. *This song still reminds me of my son coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan back in the early 2002-2008. The person who came home was NOT the same small town boy that I raised and I still do not know who he is all of these years later. He graduated high school a year early to join the military a year before 911 happened.*

We civilians will never know what these men and women saw during times of war. They did it so we wouldn't have to, I will admit that they have a bigger set of balls than I do. Thank you God for those who are willing to fight and die for we people.
