Day One Vlog 6 - Burnout Sucks... I'm Done!

  • Training for life. Doing hard things.
It is not always easy. There is no one-size-fits-all remedy. Sticking to your training plan when you really do not want to ride, especially mid winter with marginal weather and lack of sun, can be a challenge. Burnout is real, and it has hit me hard during the end of 2023.
I am grateful for all of the amazing riders in the local cycling community that continue to inspire me as well as make riding on less than stellar days, all the more magical.
For me, keeping the end goal in mind and taking things one day at a time seems to be the thing to help overcome burnout. Changing things up. Riding with friends. Doing hard things. Getting over burnout with miles and smiles.

Scott, I love your mountain bike riding videos. They always take me back to a better time in my life. I've had Menier's disease for about 20 years now. Haven't been able to mountain bike for about the last 12 years due to the vertigo--and I don't trust myself on the road with cars. I can still ride some gravel and towpath-type bike trails. Its been insanely difficult to lose what was such an important part of my life. I was a professional bike mechanic for 27 years and had to walk away because it was too hard to be constantly reminded of what I could no longer enjoy. I'm now using the winter/offseason to get those towpath bikes dialed in and am looking forward to whenever its no longer 33 degrees and rain. Thanks for putting it all out there. I appreciate you.

Thank you for the kind words. I am happy you enjoy the riding videos (and I'll keep on chronicling the adventures when life permits)
Sorry to hear about your health issues taking you away from the MTB riding. While I know it isn't exactly how you would prefer to spend your time on two wheels, amazing job on finding a way to keep some riding in your life when you can.

Usually I switch sports for a few months. But ski season has been a bit of a bust so far this year so feeling your burnout pains.

Hitting the slopes sounds like a good time! Bring the snow.
I have started shifting toward weight training, weight management, and riding a bit less for the next few months. Working on maintaining wattage while making the bike (or at least the rider) lighter for the start of the season.

Finally home after a work trip and we got a ton of snow. Looking forward to doing just that.

Just keep riding! Or at least try, my schedule hasnt allowed me to do much riding. Unfortunately I can not afford an exercise bike or equipment and my floor in my 150 yearold house feels to weak to jump around on . So lazyness has settled in and stress eating has commenced and burnout from always working from home is present. Not sure how to break the cycle but to just try to keep riding.

Just keep riding has been the mantra as of late. Breaking the cycle of not riding is a challenge. I don't know about you, but ever time I clip in and start mashing pedals, I am almost instantly reminded how wonderfully amazing it is to be able to ride the bikes we do where we do.
Looking forward to your next ride video!

Hmm. Burnout... I am not sure which burnout you are referring to. With emotional burnout I find it best to be open with people and make sure I have room for margin in my life. With dietary burnout... That is a different one. Again, open communication helps, but I want to be healthy. I find an issue with motivation to be outside right now. The weather and my schedule haven't been cooperative with each other, so I haven't been able to ride outside. It hasn't stopped me from exercising, but it has been frustrating.

Yes to all of the above! The past month, it has been a struggle to kit up and get on a bike, follow the training plan, and I was even just letting the nutrition side of the equation fall away... that said, we did visit that theme park in Florida between Christmas and New Year's Day... so the nutrition side took a hit, but each day provided us with over 8 mile of walking.
My wife and my friends have always been an amazing resource for emotional burnout as well.
Keep at it! It is so hard to stay motivated in January when the skies are gray and the trials are a sloppy mess.

Maybe you should just do what you enjoy and stop trying to compete with the world and others. There is no hard set of rules or operating manual for being content and happy. Bikes are for fun. When they become work they lead to burnout as does kayaking, skiing, golf or most any recreation. You have been brainwashed by society that you have to excel in something or you are not successful. Marketing, pier pressure and making these videos stress you as well. You worry and fret about your subs. and ratings. I enjoy some of your videos as they are in the woods. A wise man told me that the hardest training you will ever do is for old age.

Appreciate the reply and the feedback and I agree.
Bikes, and riding, should always be for fun. I picked up learning video editing as a way to mix things up and help me approach rides looking at the surrounding a bit differently (and to learn a new to me skill.)
The time I recorded the footage in this video was a personal low point. Michigan January gloom, lots of trainer miles, and it was honestly starting to feel like a chore. The training is only in competition with myself. I wish to do this ride again next year and improve my time. My personal goal is to finish before the sun goes down. Stretch goal is to be there when my friends finally finish their rides and complete what they did not last year.
As for the ratings and subs, I hadn't ever thought of that, beyond curiosity. This hobby is that to me, a hobby. I love my day job.
I started this recent bit as a way to keep me from scrolling the internet in the evening and attempting to expand my horizons/learn how to do something new. Most of what I post has been (selfishly) for me or a small group to look back on as a small time capsule. It helps give me a kick in the back side to get back out there when the weather is less than ideal.

I wasn`t ragging on you. I fight the same demons. I push myself too hard at times too the point of burnout. Like I listed the other sports. I have been an addict of them as well. Cheers. Alan @@vanwas
