Hello and welcome to my little video channel on the interwebs.
My name is Scott and I am a commercial airline pilot with a cycling habit. I do love every discipline of riding; but honestly, my heart mostly enjoys being on a MTB in the woods.
The focus of this channel is shifting slightly as I am chronicling my progress while training for the Marji Gesick in September 2023. Change isn't always easy, and these videos serve as my progress photos, so to speak.
When at work, I am away from home and not near my bikes. The workout plans for work layovers are more of a hike and run type workout. While on those workouts, I am bringing a camera with me and capturing things I find interesting while sweating and exploring.
Good or bad, I will always be honest and open about how things are progressing.
Come along with me and enjoy the journey!

Stress Management? - My Three Areas of Focus...
Self accountability vlog.
One week in. Self reflection has led me to wanting to record a why and what type statement. These blogs are recorded as a method of accountability and reflection. There are days I feel as though there are many things I would rather be doing. This series of videos is meant to be something to which I can look back and motivate myself to not always do the easy thing and get stuff done. Do hard things!

Self Accountability and Committing to Doing Hard Things

This video is a message from me to me. It is one I am posting publicly to put myself out of my comfort zone a bit, as well as give me more motivation to hold myself accountable. Whether it is seen by zero people or a random handful, the audience for which it is intended is one, but the statement is how I view it being made in public.
Icy River - DJI Air 3S First Flight

First flight with my DJI Air 3S. It is a rare occasion when the river near my house is frozen. It has been that cold! Two amazing friends of mine live on that river and I am thankful they allow me the privilege to fly my drone from their property to scratch my photography itch once in a while.
Snow, a Fat Bike, and a Drone - Testing out the DJI Neo
มุมมอง 29314 วันที่ผ่านมา
Basic follow footage taken with a DJI Neo while out enjoying some fresh snow on my fat bike. The audio is taken from the GoPro I am wearing on my helmet. The little drone did a decent job, but the second I picked up the speed, it tended to wander off a bit. it did go wide a few times on some turns, so I was taking things a bit slower to start.

Unicorns and Lenon Drops

The illusive unicorn known as a "Zone 2" ride or an "easy/recovery" ride is something that very seldom is a reality. However, on one random Monday evening, we managed to find one of these rare gems. We also had a blast sessioning some of the fun parts of one of our local trail systems.

Day One Vlog 8 -Racing the Thaw The conditions were perfect! The snow was fluffy and grippy. The smiles and laughter among friends never stopped. The temperature was just right. We had a brief Goldilocks period in the middle of the mitten. I managed to get in a few rides with friends before the temps warmed up and the glorious snow melted turning the trial into a muddy mess. 00:00-00:20 - Intro...
Work then Play? (Snow Much Fun!)

Day One Vlog 7 Last week started with a snow storm on my first day of a work trip. Three more days of not so nice weather, a cancelled commute home, and several days where the temps were so cold that my kids' school canceled had be feeling a bit of cabin fever. The temperatures finally warmed up enough to make it comfortable to ride yet remained cold enough to keep the base on the trail frozen ...
Day One Vlog 6 - Burnout Sucks... I'm Done!

Training for life. Doing hard things. It is not always easy. There is no one-size-fits-all remedy. Sticking to your training plan when you really do not want to ride, especially mid winter with marginal weather and lack of sun, can be a challenge. Burnout is real, and it has hit me hard during the end of 2023. I am grateful for all of the amazing riders in the local cycling community that conti...

First ride of the season in the snow. I knew I was racing warmer temps. Managed to get about one lap in before it started getting a bit too soft and muddy. Evening, it did get too warm and sloppy to stay on the trail without the risk of making ruts.

Travel, bad weather, and a reality check. Normally, I assess my physical condition by how I feel, how my clothes fit, and how long I am able to stay in the saddle. I thought I was doing well, until I saw photos of myself at Marji. Not one to use a scale, I figured it was time to do so to get a new starting weight. Let's just say I was a bit surprised by what I saw.

Lil' Neo recovered nicely from the near misses until that last sapling.
That it did. I was impressed at how well it performed.
Wow, that was fun reliving the ride through your drone! I'm impressed by your skills. Thanks for joining us today!
Thank you! Always a good time riding with you and the crew.
How's the Cannonade working out for you?
Has been a great bike for many years. Changed/upgraded the brakes to Shimano and put an AXS eagle on it, but beyond that, everything else is still stock.
How long did it take you to complete? I'm attempting it this year.
Good luck! The weather looks great for this year. It took me 15.5 hours. We finished around 11:30pm. Took our time but kept moving. Had to change the camera for a light on the helmet after the second Jackson Mine Park. You got this! (Sorry for the delayed reply)
Hey man this is awesome I was there you could accually see me in the start Shute, it was an amazing day for it I clocked in at about 12 hours exactly
I like your video. Realistic riding by the masses. No shame in hike the bike. Sending and shredding is not the norm. in mtn biking. Contrary what videos you see on youtube. You keep at it and stay safe.
Thanks! That was a long day and there was no way the risk was worth the reward in much of that terrain.
Maybe you should just do what you enjoy and stop trying to compete with the world and others. There is no hard set of rules or operating manual for being content and happy. Bikes are for fun. When they become work they lead to burnout as does kayaking, skiing, golf or most any recreation. You have been brainwashed by society that you have to excel in something or you are not successful. Marketing, pier pressure and making these videos stress you as well. You worry and fret about your subs. and ratings. I enjoy some of your videos as they are in the woods. A wise man told me that the hardest training you will ever do is for old age.
Appreciate the reply and the feedback and I agree. Bikes, and riding, should always be for fun. I picked up learning video editing as a way to mix things up and help me approach rides looking at the surrounding a bit differently (and to learn a new to me skill.) The time I recorded the footage in this video was a personal low point. Michigan January gloom, lots of trainer miles, and it was honestly starting to feel like a chore. The training is only in competition with myself. I wish to do this ride again next year and improve my time. My personal goal is to finish before the sun goes down. Stretch goal is to be there when my friends finally finish their rides and complete what they did not last year. As for the ratings and subs, I hadn't ever thought of that, beyond curiosity. This hobby is that to me, a hobby. I love my day job. I started this recent bit as a way to keep me from scrolling the internet in the evening and attempting to expand my horizons/learn how to do something new. Most of what I post has been (selfishly) for me or a small group to look back on as a small time capsule. It helps give me a kick in the back side to get back out there when the weather is less than ideal.
I wasn`t ragging on you. I fight the same demons. I push myself too hard at times too the point of burnout. Like I listed the other sports. I have been an addict of them as well. Cheers. Alan @@vanwas
Trails look awesome! The melt sucked!
The trails were in amazing shape! So happy I was able to get out there a few times before it all turned into a watery mess.
Fun!!
Nice transition from the engine to the wheel.
Thanks. Put a bit of thought into that one, after I knew I had the snowy turbine shot.
I have days like that.... Getting on the fat bike always bring me back :)
Finally home after a work trip and we got a ton of snow. Looking forward to doing just that.
Scott, I love your mountain bike riding videos. They always take me back to a better time in my life. I've had Menier's disease for about 20 years now. Haven't been able to mountain bike for about the last 12 years due to the vertigo--and I don't trust myself on the road with cars. I can still ride some gravel and towpath-type bike trails. Its been insanely difficult to lose what was such an important part of my life. I was a professional bike mechanic for 27 years and had to walk away because it was too hard to be constantly reminded of what I could no longer enjoy. I'm now using the winter/offseason to get those towpath bikes dialed in and am looking forward to whenever its no longer 33 degrees and rain. Thanks for putting it all out there. I appreciate you.
Thank you for the kind words. I am happy you enjoy the riding videos (and I'll keep on chronicling the adventures when life permits) Sorry to hear about your health issues taking you away from the MTB riding. While I know it isn't exactly how you would prefer to spend your time on two wheels, amazing job on finding a way to keep some riding in your life when you can.
I think we're all trying to embrace winter without having to ski 😅
Usually I switch sports for a few months. But ski season has been a bit of a bust so far this year so feeling your burnout pains.
Hitting the slopes sounds like a good time! Bring the snow. I have started shifting toward weight training, weight management, and riding a bit less for the next few months. Working on maintaining wattage while making the bike (or at least the rider) lighter for the start of the season.
Just keep riding! Or at least try, my schedule hasnt allowed me to do much riding. Unfortunately I can not afford an exercise bike or equipment and my floor in my 150 yearold house feels to weak to jump around on . So lazyness has settled in and stress eating has commenced and burnout from always working from home is present. Not sure how to break the cycle but to just try to keep riding.
Just keep riding has been the mantra as of late. Breaking the cycle of not riding is a challenge. I don't know about you, but ever time I clip in and start mashing pedals, I am almost instantly reminded how wonderfully amazing it is to be able to ride the bikes we do where we do. Looking forward to your next ride video!
Hmm. Burnout... I am not sure which burnout you are referring to. With emotional burnout I find it best to be open with people and make sure I have room for margin in my life. With dietary burnout... That is a different one. Again, open communication helps, but I want to be healthy. I find an issue with motivation to be outside right now. The weather and my schedule haven't been cooperative with each other, so I haven't been able to ride outside. It hasn't stopped me from exercising, but it has been frustrating.
Yes to all of the above! The past month, it has been a struggle to kit up and get on a bike, follow the training plan, and I was even just letting the nutrition side of the equation fall away... that said, we did visit that theme park in Florida between Christmas and New Year's Day... so the nutrition side took a hit, but each day provided us with over 8 mile of walking. My wife and my friends have always been an amazing resource for emotional burnout as well. Keep at it! It is so hard to stay motivated in January when the skies are gray and the trials are a sloppy mess.
Looks mucky!
It sure did deteriorate quickly!
Very nice video! Thanks for that-I enjoy your family atmosphere. Great job on the ride, too!
Love it, man. I truly enjoy this event.

Nice! That was me. Thanks for sharing the video!
Solid update. Persistence.
Thanks. That's the main objective at the moment. Persistence in a positive direction.
Which park is this that you're hearing the train horn? Got a 65 mile mtn bike ride in yesterday, rode through Kentwood, Middleville, Gun Lake, and Byron Center. Talked to deer and many cows in the farmlands :) You're doing great out there Scott.
Awesome job on the ride! How’s the bike holding out for you? This was at Anderson Park off of Old Lansing Road. There is an area just a short ways north where there are lots of engines and areas where some cars seems to be stored or switched? I am not up on train jargon.
@@vanwas Bike is holding up well. Have taken it bike camping a few times this year, holds the camping gear well. Knocked out my first 100 mile day ride, and had camping gear with me :) Ah, so you were close to the Canadian National railline then. That area you are referring to is Snow Yard, where yes, it's mainly used for car storage, not much regular switching of cars to rebuild trains.
Interesting to see the dominate forest color variations between the local trails (good update too).
Time zones and sleep challenges. Good look at your day.
Home now. One of those things you learn to deal with when it is a normal part of your work life. Had a great day exploring and a nice dinner after that little nap.
Great look at life and choices.
I've been on this journey for three years. I've had a lot of success and heartache along the way. You're right that it's little choices. I look forward to hearing more about your journey and possibly seeing you out on the trail as well.
I've been following your videos and journey for a while. You have been an inspiration. Thank you for that. I am trying to keep things honest, and not get too deep... but also working on creating newer, heathier habits, of which, video editing is a new one. It would be a blast to run into you and your crew on a trail. Keep the rubber side down.
Hope they oil the timber for longevity. - Decking oil or Linseed/turpentine dries or is sticky enough not to be slippery. I reckon the peaks should have been further apart for a faster ride. Also like to see one on a slight down hill, with peaks starting tight and then lengthening. So many creative options, but not cheap to build. Maybe a good option over areas you wish to protect or short sections of “unridable” terrain.
The local trail coordinator and MTB association (MMMBA) used the same company that built an area in the main park for kids and riders looking to build skills for this bridge. This bridge is one of those cases you mentioned, the terrain gets unrideable for some of the season due to water and has had a ground bridge. Initial project at the park with purpose built MTB bridges, tunnels, and fun bits to play on: dirtschool.fun/

Thanks for the tip. I'll work on incorporating that moving forward. My video from the Marji Gesick is more of what I am used to editing... just, me, a bike, and a camera I can hit "record" on once in a while. th-cam.com/video/PNWMrI5lDkc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1HH7oTjnmBxQlAHE
Why not just use dirt and build mounds 🙈🙈🙈🙈🍄🍄🍄🍄🤠🤠
Would be awesome, eh? This area is a low lying area and the dirt tends to wash away. There was a land bridge (pallet style bridge) that kept floating away in the spring and after heavy rains. This elevates it a bit more so this section of trail can be used more frequently... and to be honest, rollers and man made features like this tend to bring more younger riders to the trails. Kids on bikes is always a good thing imo. There are lots of berms, dirt jumps, and rollers throughout this trail system, this is just one small section.
Heres how to make sure no---one watches your video play the worst & most annoying sound track ever
Thanks for the advice! Happy to be an example of what not to do….. that’s how I learn and improve. Any tips other than silence due to no audio recording in a bit of the video feed? The intended audience/people for whom I made the video were happy with it...
This course makes Cheq40 look like a kid's play :)

I loved that sound, that sound of a symetrical rolling wheels😊😊
Scott… great videos! What camera do you use?
Thanks! The cameras I am currently using are a GoPro Hero 11, Insta360 X3, and an iPhone 14 Pro for video. Nothing crazy expensive or extravagant, but small enough to fit in my flight bag for work.
Thanks for the FAT video Scott!! I enjoyed watching this and it's a thumbs up from me 😊
Nice video, fun to watch!
Very cool video!
Thank you!
Energy was a bit lacking after a week on XC skis 🎿 BUT, time in the woods is always great!
You crushed it! Such an amazing time on bikes in the woods. Looking forward to the next ride.
Awesome stuff Scott!!! WOOT!!!! Beautiful ride and the deer bonus. I have trails on my property and last year a fox (we named him Cecil) followed me around. LOL!!! Cheers from New Brunswick Canada.
Thanks Tim! By the looks of your channel, it appears you are also enjoying some wonderful snow this season. I don't know what I would do if I saw a fox actually following me around... that must have been amazing. Cheers from Michigan and keep enjoying that bike in the snow!
@@vanwas the fox would actually come up and sit beside us in our backyard but 20 feet away and look into the woods like we were doing. LOL
Starting can be the hardest especially in rough weather. I'd tell myself to get out there and ride 15-20 minutes and see where it headed. Some of the rides it didn't change but I was out there and buckled down to get the work in. You nail the result: feeling better after the workout, ride, run...
That's exactly where my focus has been. Get on the bike, go through the motions and get started. The results are almost always a feeling of satisfaction that I completed the workout, did not take a step backward, and am enjoying the benefits of increase in fitness. At the end, a bad day on a bike is always better than a good day at work* *Not always... I kind of like my job.
Just went there today for the first time. Fun trail....cool video!
Great vid! What bike computer are you using?
John Overman It was a Garmin Edge 520.

Sorry for the slow reply. It's in Holt, Michigan, just south of Lansing.
Looks like typical Iceman. People get tired and delirious and veer over and can't always hear you. Good job passing in tough conditions.
