- I recently assembled my Elecraft no-solder KX3 portable HF transceiver kit. There are many videos on youtube of guys assembling their KX3. I tackle the project a bit differently.

You have reached a new level of video production and set a high bar for those of us looking to you for mentoring. The final power supply footage was cleary not for the tech level ham. One thing I do know is the Anderson Power Poles will handle what resides in that power pack!
Thanks Doc
Randy, your videos are some of the first ham radio videos that I came across in 2013. This one was in my suggested videos this evening, and I got a laugh out of your instruction of the assembly process as well as the additional cuts. Thanks for the humor! Go team Blue!
Glad that you enjoyed.
Hi Randy,
I too have invested in a fairly expensive radio kit, but unfortunately the build is delayed while I save up for that crescent wrench. That reminds me, I’ve got to shop for a router as well. You have truly brightened my day and you certainly have a teacher’s soul. Thanks for your encouragement on studying for my license exams coming up this Saturday when you replied to my comment on your Icom IC-T70A video. I was amazed to see that pop up on my iPad!
Hi Randy ... The radio is still working great and still my favorite radio! Thank you!
The ending was great Randy! Always enjoy your videos, keep them going!
Great video! Keep it up. Enjoying getting back to the hobby after a 20 year absence. Things have come a long way.
Thanks Randy for a helpful and wonderful video on the KX3 assembly. Your videos are so well done and so instructive. In addition this was the tipping point for me! Going to the Elecraft site now to order mine now that I know what it is like to assemble. I have loved my K1-4. So impressed with Elecraft!
Thanks again Randy!
Keep the GREAT videos coming
Oh my jumpin jesus! That was great Randy! The XYL and myself feel enlightened and bold for my next radio build. 73's Al N7AGA
Thanks for a terrific video Randy, love the humor that you injected whilst building this kit. Enjoyed it to the Max. Keep up the good work and looking forward to the next one.

Loving your videos. I'm just getting started and was thinking of getting one of these as my first rig. I'm hoping to get my foundation licence in the next few weeks
I built one of these not too long ago and am pretty happy with it. I can't wait to get my hands on the 2m module for it. Congrats on the new rig! 73
Soon?
Probably not. No telling.
Thanks Randy, Going to buy the KX3 kit next month and good to see your alternative assembly methods. Loved the large hammer...73 de GM4WCE
Wonderful video Randy, thank for presenting it!!!
Randy, thanks for the video. I really loved it. My wife looked over my shoulder as you were using the big wrench. She looked at me and said "See, this is why you can't fix anything around the house." Great sense of humor Randy. New subscriber.
Randy, that was real hoot. Much better than one that is way to serious. I loved that ending.
I am cracking up watching this whole thing. Thank you for your unique take on building this radio! 73's from KB9ZPR! :)
Randy out of all of the amateur radio operators that I regularly watch on You Tube you are by far my favorite!!!73's.Tony RidlenKC9QVE
+Tony Ridlen Tony, thanks
Love the video and the humor as well. Great radio kit, hopefully I'll build one when I get my funds together. Thanks for showing. 73,
Gwen K6GRH
Thanks for the most enjoyable build video yet. All you needed to add was a Flux capacitor and you could have gone anywhere in time as well. :)
Good point.
Randy, that was quite a unique build.
Best video yet Randy, glad to see the sense of humor coming out in amateur radio...its a thing often lost amongst us hams. Keep em coming and thanks! 73 de kc9tns
Congratulation on passing your General.
I think the new guys would have a better first experience on HF with a radio that has 100 watts. QRP and low power is a lot of fun, but the extra power will help you on the air. You are new, looking for contacts. Look at the Yaesu FT-857, FT-897, FT-450, Icom IC-718, IC-7200, IC-7410, and Kenwood TS-2000. All good radios, some even have 2M and 70 cm. All are 100 watts on HF.
For your first antennas, string up a couple of dipoles for 20 and 40 meters.
Exceptional video. Love the humor. Can't wait to get my KX3
Great video! I hope you are still enjoying the KX3.
best video i have seen in ages.....well done Randy
Your youtube video here is totally terrific to see. Keep up the terrific work.
Kept my attention through the entire video.....love the humor! Now I want to build one myself...I just earned my General Class License but still learning the ropes! Thanks for sharing! -73 - KC1KND
Hi Randy, excellent video i loved it.
As a freebander on 11 meters i usually fall asleep watching ham video`s,but i watched this from start to finish so well done, you kept me interested.
Just to let you know though,as soon as you connected the Rectonium vapour system,we had a total power failure here, and hospitals cancelled all appointments even though we are 4.600 miles apart.
Anyway, now my pc has come back on after a £200 repair bill,so i thought i would say thanks.

Great video love the bit at the end
Awesome video Randy! I enjoyed that a lot.
Brilliant video Randy, Always a pleasure to watch your channel. All the best. M6NDF
I'm glad I watched this. I was going to buy one but as soon as I saw how many fasteners there were I changed my mind. thanks for saving me!
Just take your time.
Ending was epic! congrats for the kit. Greetings from Sofia, Bulgaria:) Ivan
Great video of an awesome radio.
Hi Andy thanks for the enjoyable video my new KX3 should be here next week
look forward to putting it together lots of useful info

Hi. I was probably running 10-15 watts. I forget how far away he was. I think he was located in CA with me, so a few hundred miles. I was using my station's 80M dipole up about 30 feet. Thanks for watching
Hi, I'm new to ham and getting ready for my test. Your video gets an applause from me....great sense of humor!
Mike Thorpe good luck on your test. Please keep me posted!
Thanks, there are loads of proper KX3 build videos out there to watch. I took a different direction.....
Your mileage may very
Some assembly required
Batteries not included.
Randy
Great video, Randy! And I thought Heathkits were a challenge to build. Gotta go to Harbor Freight to get that adjustable wrench you used. 73!
Awesome, love how you play the straight man through the whole video, classic.
I like ur sense of humour at the end. Good stuff Shane uk
You have made me laugh - the last part was priceless!
My KX3 is on order, rounding up all the tools I need. Thanks, I really enjoyed your presentation. 73, Larry KB0R
best video ever. i love how you added chris at the end from teh geek group. that was the best
Love the humor in the video.....It's awesome! Nice Job
Thanks Randy for the info and guidance ! I will look at these radios and take your advice for antenna as well!
Regards

Love your video . Fantastic ending! I hope you have great fun with your new radio the kx3. I am thinking about buying one my self , i have heard great reviews about the kx3.

Love the ending of your video, so funny :) Nice radio, seems to work fine :)
Great video Randy, you have a great sense of humour! :) - while still being informative!!
A real HOOT! I have a K2 and love it. I will probably buy a KX3 in the future.
I built several Heathkits. Today's products are much more sophisticated, which makes soldering of board components next to impossible.
The larger K3 transceiver kit interests me a lot. I am taking my time when deciding what to buy. Ham radio has so much good equipment now that one could buy a transceiver and use it for 10 years or more and not have to upgrade.
I this this is my next radio to build - finishing my K3 project right now.
Cool!!!! Good Job Randy!
Thanks so much for the humor, just what I needed at the end of an unenjoyable day. :)
Cool radio, nice video.
great video. kept me smiling the whole time
Hi Randy, just want to say I really enjoy you video's. Pleas keep up the good work..
dale mcdaniel thanks
Fantastic...The final of video is wonderfull. Best 73's from PY3KN!
Hi Randy. Do you think this is a good starter radio for a new ham? Just got my general and I am starting to shop for radios
Love this vid. Third time LOL at the big crescent, "the persuaders", and the end, of course.
General test coming up and thinking if getting a KX3 after.
Good luck on your upcoming test.
K7AGE Thanks! Passed both Technician and General. Still waiting on my call sign, though. Unfortunately had some items come up so probably won't be able to afford a KX3 this year. Hopefully next!
Love the video Randy
Great video Randy,, give you thumbs up as always ,, might get a magic power bag for my electric cycle 🚲 thanks Shane uk 🇬🇧 England
your a goof Randy great video as always hope your Power comes back on soon. Had a power outage here last night now I know why.

Building the radio allows you to learn a bit about what is inside the radio. It also saves about $100 over buying it assembled.
Randy, I much enjoyed this video. Thinking about a KX3 here presently and your video has given me confidence to build one. I must invest in a hammer drill though :-)
73s Roger G3XBM
I like the poker face and humour, great video, no shaking and moving like some on youtube causing friction burns on my eye balls. I am retired and envious.
Good to see that Elecraft is including a Slot A Athlon and a Pentium Pro in the KX3 kit. I wish I got some CPUs in my KX1 kit I built a couple of years ago! :p
Nice video
Have you considered a pneumatic power tool set for your next assembly?
Good idea, Going to the Harbor Freight website......
I wish I still had my old HW-16 for my son. That was a great entry level rig.
I loved the video. Especially the dry sarcasm that will go right over the heads of most ;-)
Randy you are more technically inclined than I am obviously but you really do look like you know what you are doing on this project!!!
The FT-817 is a nice radio too. I also have one of those. I got it when it first came out, a long time ago. Yes it has 2M and 70cm built in standard. And it is a lot lower price. I wonder when Yaesu will replace/update the FT-817/857/897 radios? Enjoy your FT-817. Have fun.
great video, i really like your power source, it is similar to my retro flux capacitor power supply I got from Dr. Emmett Brown, thru my good buddy Marty Mc Fly
Hey Randy, if you're up late, usually after 6:30 UTC, please drop in on the Northern Cali 'Bucket Net' on 3.846 and let us hear your KX-3, I'm looking real hard at it for my next long-term rig.
Hey, IT WORKS!!
73,

Hello K7AGE from Chile, I am Cristian CE3RHA, one question, where you buy this very nice "vintage" mic for KX3????
does this unit have a battery charger in it for rechargeable batteries? I have a ft 817 and seems they thought out the battery compartment a lot better on that rig so you don't need to disassemble the radio to put new ones in it. although really 8 aa cells are not well, a practical source for even 5 watts at least based on the 817.
twilson1118 The internal charger is an option for the KX3. Many guys end up using external battery with both radios if you plan on doing much operating.
Something like a FT-857 for around $850 is a great do everything radio in a small package. 100 watts on HF, all modes, and goes up to 70 cm. I have one of those too. If I only could take 1 radio to a remote location, I would probably grab my FT-857.
Any chance you might be doing a video how to navigate the extensive menus? 73 de KD0WTE
Nice transciever. I gotta build me one of these. I'm a technician so this would be perfect.
where did you get the cute little desk microphone from, the silver one?
I have no idea. That was a long time ago.
that mercury vapor rectifier from the lift system looks cool crammed into your powerpack ;)
+mechadrake It does get warm
Hey Randy, why you didn't connect the 100 volts ? :-)
Great video and probably the most entertaining build I've come across regarding ham radio. Hope you didn't cause too much of a black out. 73 de 2E0EJJ
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
The building and shooting the took about 6 hours. About 5 hours to get setup. I spend a lot of time trying to get buzz out of the audio when I used an extension cable for my mic. I even made a new cable using RG174, and still buzz. I gave up and used the wireless mic. Then another couple of hours to tear everything down. Editing took 4-6 hours. When finished I had a 5 GB file. I started to upload the file to youtube over my slow DSL it was going to take over 2400 minutes. Uploaded the next day.
Thanks for uploading!
I almost did a search for rectonium vapor power source. Nice one!
hi randy, can you tell me how to put my callsign into the display of the kenwood ts-2000? many thanks.
That was fun to watch Randy. Looks like a very nice radio, hear a lot about them and it is always good. I tend to use those big hammers a lot when building kits, especially in the final testing phase. I also used to have one of those rectonium vapor power packs but it tended to overheat a lot and became gaseous so I got rid of it. Maybe that is the one you ended up with, lol. Keep it up, fun to watch and very informative. 73 wd0akx
What would be the benefit of this diy radio over a preassembled unit? I'm a novice to hamming. Thanks.
nice work .congrats . I like the ending haha
This was just a great video. Very well done. What kind of feedback have you received from the folks at Elecraft?
Thanks Randy, it did make me chuckle, keep them coming. 73 Dave G0DDF
Excellent... I have found that a collection of air tools with a 20 gall 150lb compressor helps out a lot! Don't forget, a 50 lb torque wrench gets the panel on nice and tight.
Fun! I liked the mini-vintage Mic from Elecraft.. just a little bit..73 Randy and enjoy your new toy!
Best build video ever!
K7AGE, This is KF4CNM. My family is from your area. Done many models but know radios.
Great video and great humor
The KX3 is #2 on the Sherwood Engineering Inc Receiver Test Data list. #1 is the Hilberling PT-8000A, #3 is the Yaesu FTdx-5000, #4 is the K3 and so on. It is a great portable radio, there are lots of videos of the SOTA, Summits On The Air guys using the KX3. It is 10 watts, in an emergency more power would probably be useful. Look for reviews in the Nov CQ and Dec QST magazines. Another great feature of Elecraft is that their engineers frequent the email mailing list reflectors for comments.
