This stuff is a must have for any sculpture studio because it's so versatile and durable. It has the consistency of a soft clay. You mix two equal parts together and then you have a relatively short window to work it until it hardens. The beauty of Magic Sculpt is that when it hardens, it's super hard. You can file it, drill it, Dremel it. It's like a plumber's epoxy but for artists. It's one of the best materials for structure and support when building things. It's tricky to use at first because of the quick set up time, but once you get a feel for it, it's not difficult to sculpt with- you just have to be fast. Obviously for small stuff it's great because you can mix small amounts. For larger pieces it gets a bit tricky. That's where this video comes in. I go over how to mix amounts for large pieces, how to apply it over a foam body, how to sand and finish it, and how to prep it for paint. It's great for weight - you can sculpt a thin coat on top of foam or other light weight materials - and it will still be super durable. I also go over a technique where I press fabric into the wet surface for some texture, and how to incorporate that into the sculpture.

Hey Steve! Having worked on a larger Magic Sculpt piece myself, let me share a mixing technique. Instead of mashing two balls of MS together, roll each component into a snake and twist the two together. Then fold that spiral over on itself once or twice and mash together. Then roll it out into a snake again. Then fold the snake into equal halves and twist it together again. Repeat until your MS putty is completely mixed. Your hands will thank you! Cheers!

Great video! Im enjoying the series a lot. Will soon start on my own toy/sculpture, but this video gave me an idea of using this air dry clay I got, but its really elastic and doesn't work for earrings (what I actually bought it for), so ill be using it as ones uses magic sculpt. Ill see how it turns out. Cant wait for the next video!
Air dry clay also often changes size while drying. Which makes it complicated for drying.
For smoothing large areas of epoxy clay, I've had good luck with rubber tools. Specifically, the princeton catalyst wedge #6 (the big white one). A dollar store silicone spatula would probably work about the same if you could find one that isn't too soft. Epoxy clay is weird, I've found the amount of time pressure is applied is just as important as the amount of pressure applied. It's sorta non-newtonian and mischievous.

I use and old style food chopper ( hand crank meat grinder) to mix and blend both parts evenly, it also softens the stuff as you grind it from heat friction.... This saves alot on your hands.

Thank you so much! Just purchased Magic Sculpt, trying new material. Question - have you tried scrubbing the clay after raking? Does it work? To reduce sanding
I try to get it as smooth as possible before it dries- but sometimes it's sets up faster than i'd like when I'm doing large scale so I just plan on excessive sanding :)
Amazing video I have used apoxie sculpt by Aves a lot but have never used magic sculpt. I am wondering what specific type of foam you use and where you can get it?

Absolutely amazing. Would you recommend that product for learning? Like absolute beginners? I imagine the fast-setting makes it more suited for experienced sculptors that know what they're doing? I don't mind the price so much as the learning experience.

I see your are using Golden Paint.. Good stuff but Really Expensive!! Not to mention the 10LB containers of Magic Sculpt.. Got to love the stuff though.

Great video! I have 2 questions: Can I apply Magic Sculpt directly onto a 3D Styrofoam Sculpture? Can it be used with a silicone mold?
yes and yes- but some styrofoams are too slippery for it to stick. but the blue eps foam works great

yep- the magic sculpt is basically a hard epoxy- can also paint it and seal it for extra protection
How does magic sculpt compare to aves apoxie sculpt?
Is it possible to make the clay mixture more gluey/slimey/liquidy-like first then apply to a surface? Do I just dip the mixture in warm water and it smooths out?
I wet my hands to soften it. Also, apply it quickly right after it's mixed while it's super soft. There's also a lighter weight version that's super sticky - almost like peanut butter- called air something...
I’m trying to restore a large panther manse out of plaster. It’s ears and teeth are missing, would you recommend this product for this application?
definitely! easy to sculpt if you add water and very durable- can sand it super thin too.
So glad to see an artist wear a mask while sanding. That stuff is not toxic but wearing masks while sanding anything is just healthier.

nope -it hardens. It's just like plumbers epoxy but large buckets for sculpting

not heavy at all- the foam is really lite. I actually embed lead weights in the bottom to give it some bottom weight.

no mask required. doesn't off gas anything. I do wear nitrile gloves though.

As a rule, try not to put anything in your lungs that's not air. Even 'non-toxic' fine powder should not find their way in your lungs. They will thank you. You don't always need the full respirators when there are no fumes or vapors involved, just use simple particle masks.
