  • In this sculpting tutorial I explain how to enlarge a sculpture via foam carving, Magic Sculpt, and needle felting. Starting with a 3d scan, a foam carving company enlarged the piece to 5 ft. using a CNC machine and EPS foam. The 3d scanning process and foam carving process is explained here, and I talk a little bit about different kinds of sculpting foams. Here are some materials and tools links from the video:

Mold Star 15 Silicone (pint kit): amzn.to/2NhaahA
    Smooth-Cast 300, Casting Resin (pint kit): amzn.to/2ITXHME
    Smooth-Cast 300, Casting Resin (gallon kit): amzn.to/2RECY2c
    Magic Sculpt:
    1 lb kit: amzn.to/2XvKFx2
    5 lb kit: amzn.to/2LpqSce
    20 lb kit: amzn.to/2LnMDJd

The 2nd and 3rd tutorials of this series explain how to sculpt on top of the foam with Magic Sculpt, and then paint the Magic Sculpt. A final tutorial that is in the works, explains how to needle felt the remaining surface with roving wool. You can find the other tutorials in this series under the "Sculpture Tutorials" Playlist. You can also find other Magic Sculpt tutorials under the "Stop Motion Sets and Puppets" and "Designer Toy Tutorials" Playlists. Stay tuned... and thanks for checking it out!

Does anyone know where you can buy these large blocks of foam? I can only find skinny ones at Home Depot.

Instead of using a file to carve, do you ever use a hot wire cutter or hot knife with the styrofoam bead foam?

Jacqueline Overby yes I have a couple different hot knife tools. They work great. Just wear a respirator. The fumes are awful.
