It's a lovely coming of age tale about a young man with many brothers, who realises his dad is a bit of a git.

29:00 the interex remind me of the Culture (from Iain M Banks’ books) a bit, just without the AI. They’re peaceful and resources seem plentiful, they embrace all species etc. And there’s a gun called an Interex Mauler that Bequin finds in Penitent! 😮

I've re-read Horus Rising this weekend, and as you said, this series has many moments where it sort of winks at the reader that already knows 40k, being like "get it? ... get it?". One that stuck out for me this time around was Loken musing about the future and the possible immortality of Astartes:
"Loken tried to imagine the future, but the image would not form. Death would wipe them all from history. Not even the great First Captain Ezekyle Abaddon would survive forever. There would be a time when Abaddon no longer waged bloody war across the territories of humanity. Loken sighed. That would be a sad day indeed. Men would cry out for Abaddon’s return, but he would never come."
... oh Loken, you sweet summer child, if only you knew...

I think the point about people desiring religious ritual is really interesting. My wife is studying English law at the moment and its incredible how these supposedly secular institutions are steeped in religion, and I don't mean Christianity or any other specific religion, but the religion of the institution itself. It's like the removal of many Catholic religious rituals during the reformation and again during the enlightenment drove people to create their own rituals replace the things they had lost.

On the topic of Easter eggs, I remember Orfeo culzean from revener series had couple of Kinebrach artifacts on his collection.
And also I know that horus heresy series is bit difficult to navigate (not to mention the sheer amount of books!), but I love to see mira continueing the series to the end.

    • @N0TYALC
      @N0TYALC ปีที่แล้ว +3

I don’t think this was many of us. Maybe it’s just me, but I thought most people got into the series with a vague notion of how things played out. Her perspective as someone who didn’t even know that Horus got corrupted by Chaos or that Euphrati will end up as an imperial saint is very rare if my assumptions are correct. Hell, the opening line of “I was there when Horus killed the emperor” clearly didn’t fake her out in quite the way the author was intended. When we heard that, we thought “oh, this is a chaos Astartes reminiscing about the siege of terra.” She probably thought “Oh, so Horus is the one who killed the Emperor? Who’s Horus?”

I don't know what's going to happen, I don't know the lore but I'm so intrigued with the characters and where the story goes.

lovely little easter egg, with the interex and gaunt ghost. With the laser firing crossbows. I asked Dan Abnett this one and he confirmed the both stories were in the same part of the galaxy. He also said about the Sanguinary Worlds was also a contextion between the two books but I haven;t been able to fully understand that one (unless it is conntected to the planet murder and the fact the blood angels were in the area)
Obviously Tanit (40k Tanith) was a Carthagian Moon Goddess, with Carthage being an Empire destroyed by the Romans with their Legions.

I ordered it just for a several hours ago and It's going to arrive me in two days. It'll be my very first Warhammer 40K (30K maybe) book. Entered the universe just two weeks ago and even my limited knowledge, It's one of my favorite fantastic universes so far with ASOIAF and Mistborn. I am really, really excited to read the book that I have wanted for a long time. But well, book is English. None of 40K books translated to my language. So It's going to be little hard to read it for me. And a good way to improve my English :D

I'd love it if, somewhere out among the stars on the galaxy's edge, there was an 'Interrex secundus' - maybe a colony of them that stayed under the radar and slowly built themselves up - so we might have them as a playable faction. I wondered if a sneaky sideways way to get that might be to kitbash some Interrex models and have them a Tau irregulars? I don't know much about the tau, so I'm not sure if that would work, but it'd be cool if it would...

Great video again guys. What I would add is that the opening 3 books of Horus Heresy were meant to read like a trilogy setting up the main setting. Then the original plan was to write various books set during the heresy and not really progress the story. But after a few years - fans were clamouring for them to pull things together, progress the story and lead us to the final siege and conclusion.

one of the interesting things about The Old Lore(talking mid to late 90s before the HH ccg and artbooks), is that half of the Traitor-Primarchs(back then there were only four; I dont even remember hearing anything about the word-bearers back then, and I dont think the Night Lords were really fleshed out until the new Chaos Terminator release in, I think?, 98), were presented as bscl tragic figures? Like: Magnus's "Fall" was literally just Russ using the Heresy as an opportunity to settle old grudges by attacking Prospero and Tzeentch being like "I know you hate me, but you're an awesome wizard and I'll save you and your legion if you work for me." and Mortarion's was literally his legion getting trapped in the warp on the way to save Terra and ravaged by a terrible plague until he switched sides.
Tied to this: Khorne had this weird Honor thing back then that occasionally made him kinda neutrally? I suspect Krom from the Conan mythos might have been part of his inspiration(spcl given the magic-hatred).

Funnily enough I just decided to listen to the audiobook for the first time and saw this video show up just after finishing it. As for my own thoughts: it's one of these books I'd absolutely say not to start with because the entire book runs on dramatic irony to feel like a classic tragedy. It works best if you know anything about the events of the horus heresy (which funnily enough you can just binge Ian's channel for) and enjoy the creeping weight of that approaching disaster. Hell, the book ends with a sentence that basically looks at the reader/listener and goes "well guess where we're going next. Oh, this will be a doozy!"

I still think the best intro-to-Heresy game is Betrayal at Calth. It's not in print any more but you can still buy no-minis board/book/cards/tokens sets pretty cheaply since everyone bought multiple sets to get the minis, you can play it with any old space marines (my set has card standups!) and it's actually a really good low-time-investment no-setup-required boardgame-wargame.
(Also I love the way everyone pronounces "Qruze" the same way despite it being a collection of too many consonants but I think I've heard three different pronunciations of "Iacton". I've always read it "Yack-ton", personally!)

Completely unrelated to the video: I can't believe that Mira has a hoodie of Wonkers from "Dreamfall". I thought I was the only one who remembered that game...

Woah woah woah. Kryten is an ultramarine. Rimmer’s a World Eater.
Cat’s with the Emperor’s Children, obviously, and Holly’s a 40k era machine spirit.
I’d argue that Lister’s maybe Space Wolves because he has a well deserved, deliberately cultivated, reputation for being slovenly and undisciplined, but at his core (at least as the seasons go on) he demonstrates a rock solid capability for what he’s doing.

I'd have Rimmer down as a Word Bearer. It's something about the salute.

I don’t disagree. My reasoning was his anger, his father issues, and his resentment of Kryten the Ultramarine being better at rules than him

It’s a great read, it really hammers in the tragedy that before falling to Chaos, Horus was a pretty cool dude

I've said it before, I think the final book will open with "I was there, I was there the day the Emporer sley Horus"

Yep and rightly so, though it would be even more prefect if it was the final line imo.

Don't forget the Horus Heresy Aeronautica book so three games in the Heresy Era now. Horace goes Skiing reference is an unexpected bonus too.
