    This was a great discussion, very glad you'e finally gotten round to this one.
    One minor link which you might not spot from reading them out of order. The new interrogator in main Magos story, Voriet, is the one Beta encounters in the fight at the start of Pariah. So you now know what happened to him.

    I am kind of grumpy that they include the magos novella at the end of the new print of the eisenhorn omnibus but you don't get the back story of short stories Pestilence, Master Imus, Titus, and the previous 2 Dresher stories. When he goes into his fever dream I was kind of confused and now I have to go back and read those.

    A lot of these stories were included in the Ravenor and Eisenhorn omnibuses, as they were scattered/written for many other purposes/pubications, but they were put in the Magos becase Dan Abnett decided to pull them together as a more cohesive tale, which is why you reread some.
    Also Bloodlines is an amazing Noir story set in WH 40k, and really digs deep into the civillain side! Plus the protagonist is grumpy and doesn't have time for a lot this s***

    Gaunts Ghosts has a series of short stories which are quite character driven (I believe just before the Necropolis story?). That might be a good way to have some Gaunt in the club without it going too "I moved my left flank".

  • @Powoga
    @Powoga 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Okay, finished the video. I don't think I got anything else to add, except maybe that a lot of the stories also have this theme of the Imperium (and Eisenhorn, and Ravenor) using people, and then not really caring what happens to them.
    Those guys at the asylum (though one Ciaphas Cain novel had a throwaway line which mentioned that a planet which contained a facility to care for traumatised soldiers also produced a lot of servitors, so it could be worse, I guess), Master Imus, Titus Endor, the disbanded regiment, Drusher... you get what I'm trying to say.
    On to suggestions, as if you didn't already have enough of those:
    I've seen a lot of people recommending _The Emperor's Gift_ by Aaron Dembski-Bowden, and yeah, it's pretty good. We get to learn some interesting things about the Grey Knights (did you know they don't worship the Emperor as a god? Seems a bit odd to me), the Inquisition, and the Imperium as a whole, there's a lot of stuff happening, maybe too much, and it's connected to the Ravenor series in a slightly strange way.
    Staying on the topic of Space Marines, there's the _Knights of Calliban_ Omnibus, written by Gav "Take a shot" Thorpe. _The Purging of Kadillus_ is a fairly standard Space Marine Battles thing, with the Dark Angels fighting some Orks. There are some standout moments, like the brief bits where Ghazghkull gets to be the main character, or when a Dark Angels chaplain takes the time to repair a damaged statue with "a slab of two-part resin" (Greenstuff?), feeling immensely pleased with himself and the heavy symbolism of taking care of even minor damage... which is immediately followed by a scene of massive carnage, which he himself makes even worse (of course, he manages to justify that, too).
    Oh yeah, there's also Naaman, the guy who actually has a model. So if Mira asks "Can you use that on the tabletop", the answer is yes... in some of the older editions, at least.
    The follow-up novel, _Angels of Darkness_ , is much more interesting, focusing on the survivors from the previous novel chasing after some of the Fallen. There's also an interrogation of one of the Fallen, and he gets to explain how he, as someone who was alive during the Horus Heresy (he's actually in some of the Horus Heresy novels, which is a nice touch), sees the Imperium and the role of a Space Marine, compared to the modern version of them.
    And then there's _Azrael_ ,which focuses on Azrael fighting against Chaos and going on a vision quest to become Supreme Grand Master. It's fine.
    I haven't read the follow-up series, _Legacy of Caliban_ , yet, but I'm planning to.
    Moving on, there are some Warhammer Horror short stories, if you like short stories. Which I do. A lot of them have a sort of Gothic horror vibe, which Mira might enjoy. Some of them go a bit over the top with gore and scary imagery, which feels a bit silly. I guess that's what happens when you take something like Warhammer, which is already thoroughly unpleasant and over the top, and a bit silly, and try to make it into a horror setting.
    First of, there's _Mud and Mist_ , by John Goodrich. What I like about it is that it takes what is essentially a fairly mundande situation in a game of 40k and shows it from the perspective of a regular guardsman. That's a clever use of the source material.
    _A Threnody for Kolchev_ by Darius Hinks is a nice story about musicians and a cursed instrument from the little shop that wasn't there yesterday. A bit of a cliché, I suppose, but entertaining.
    _The Colonel's Monograph_ by Graham McNeill goes full on Victorian era, with a scary mansion, complete with spooky butler (well, he's a servitor, but close enough) in a remote village, people driven mad by forbidden knowledge, and all that good stuff. It also contains what I think is the single most genuinely unpleasant line of dialogue in any Warhammer story, so that's a plus.
    And last but not least, there's _Tesserae_ by Richard Strachan. I usually skip the Age of Sigmar stuff, but this on stars a -dwarf- duardin™, and I like those guys. Again, creepy mansion, nice story.
    I could go on, but I see that I've gone on long enough already. Sorry about that.
    Books. Read them. They're fun.
    Or don't.

    Late to the party but recently started Abnett's Inquisitor books and the Magos makes it very obvious that Abnett has really progressed as a writer over the years, it has real pathos and emotional character moments and I loved the short stories as background. Aww, this video made me so happy. It's the most charming of the Eisenhorn books perhaps because it feels the most relatable.
    While I agree you shouldn't read the Horus Heresy. I think you should have to want to read that rather than be told to - it might be fun to get Mira to read the first book and, when it's released, the last one (both parts) and then try to suppose what happened in between.

    I'll comment before watching, and maybe add something once I'm done.
    I think I actually liked the short stories more then the novel, maybe because I just really like short stories in general. They give nice, varied glimpses into the vast universe of 40k.
    The actual novel felt... odd. I guess it's because most of it is from the point of view of Magos Drusher, a very unusual and likable protagonist for a Warhammer story.
    It was sort of nice to see everything the short stories established come together, but at the same time, there wasn't much actual plot. Eisenhorn investigates a spooky castle, fights some cultists in a weird place, and foils yet another nefarious plot. There was much more focus on Eisenhorn's psyche and how his work did and did not change him, but after all he's been through, it just feels weird to pick this as some sort of great turning point with personal revelations and such.
    Sorry if I'm a bit incoherent, it's getting late.

    SInce Mira showed some interest in some Tau stories, I would likely want her to check out Broken Sword. Its very tau beginner friendly, introducing them to a human main character, and is I think my favorite expression of the complicated question of "are they better than the Imperium for humanity?"
    Voice of Experience is also very good, somewhat similar setup but is more modern and way shorter as a short story.

    If you continue to read Dan Abnetts work you will become quite familiar with ghosts. He's got pretty good at writing them now I think it's fair to say.
    The little meeting with Eisenhorn and Ravenor at the tower sequence I noticed you mention basically;
    "this could have been an email" kind of view.
    Thing is I disagree. For a super secret meeting with someone who is persona non grata finding a planet in the middle of nowhere with no native imperial presence seems like exactly the sort of meeting spot you should have for really dangerous information.
    And I don't know if you noticed but a lot of information can be hacked from those imperial consoles people use, psyker messages can be intercepted or lost.
    Eisenhorn basically consorting with daemons from the warp and being involved in some very serious events that rocked the entire system kind of means any attempt to talk to him is like opening admitting you're trying to send a love letter to a terrorist. Bit sus don't you think?
    Remember by this point the tragedy that befell Ravenors elite holdings on his home planet of operations was totally blown open by a spy or something right? And his holdings across multiple planets systematically destroyed and basically pushed him into the shadows.
    Both of these guys have been seriously burned by doing things in the open in the past so I think it's entirely reasonable for them to both decide to be very very careful about how they meet up.
    I do find it kind of funny how Mira keeps looking for love stories though. Like watching a horror film for a cooking recipe, it's not going to be the one you want lol.

    I started Xenos through other channels, but by now one of the most compelling reasons to keep going with the series is following your book club, guys. You're a lot of fun :)
    I find the books entertaining and they have compelling stories. Nevertheless, the characters aren't that so. Most of them, to my taste, are generic action heroes and little else, excluding some moments. Carl Thonius's addiction and latter possession, for example, although interesting, could had much more impact if we had had the opportunity to connect with him properly before. Valentine Drusher, on the other hand, it's the first that I've felt like a real person who reacts properly to all the shit he goes through. He's quite intelligent, but he hasn't like infinite knowledge of things; given his background, he's not a coward. As Nayl points, you need something to throw yourself into a fight without knowing how yo defend yourself; he has all the quirks, virtues and flaws that make a proper character, so this is the book I've enjoyed most by far and has enough foreshadowing to hype me into reading Pariah. Thank you guys for this ^^
    PD: taxonomy and and field biology are proper sciences, so yes, Drusher is a scientist, not just a dude that makes watercolours of the animals he sees :P

      PDD: also, this is the Abnett's book that have made me laugh more by far. As Mira says, Drusher and Rincewind are very alike.

    Funny how Drusher could make top Inquisitor material compared to Eisenhorn and Ravenor, both of them are cackling charicatures at this point. Probably a testimony of Dan's evolution as a writer too.

    sorry if this is a stupid question, I just picked up the Eisenhorn Omnibus which says it contains The Magos over the last 200 pages of its 940 pages but that 'The Magos' looks alot bigger than that?

    • @ArbitorIan
      @ArbitorIan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does it contain lots of short stories too, cos that's the rest of The Magos!!

    • @captainbaconsky
      @captainbaconsky 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      they indeed cut out most of the short stories from that. they only kept Regia Occulta, Missing in Action, Backcloth, and the Keeler Image. None of which are actually all that relevant (maybe except reggia)

    Thorn wishes talon was set before Ravenor goes to Eustice Majoris for the first time. you should listen to the original audio drama "it's on audible" and it's far better than Tobys effort.
    Garrath Armstrong plays Eisenhorn and Jonathan Keeble Voices Ravenor.
    I forget who does Nayel but he is portrayed with a London accent.
    Anyway, that version makes more sense and is extremely funny at times.
    Well worth the price.

    The Horus Heresy series is really too big of an undertaking. Personally I stopped after the first dozen-or-so books. Maybe do the first 4, they're pretty much essential reading but then you can pick and choose the interesting one-offs. I liked Legion, Mechanicum and Nemesis but I really didn't get much further with them. Or for something more lighthearted, Kal Jerico: Sinners Bounty is a lot of fun.
