And they did this exact maneuver like three times - each time crashing into the other boats...unbelievable. Damage would have been so much less if they just kept drifting into the other ones.
After 5 years of sailing on courses, cruises and 2,5 years of working as an instructor on inland sailboats (with tiller and outboard engine so no prop walk and rudder delay) I can tell I am beginning to comprehend how to use wind in my favor and maneuver profficiently and only now I am even entertaining a thought to rent a keelboat. Besides, in such strong winds I'd look for a covered harbour or plan my route in such a way to already be docked when it starts to blow
If you rent a 52 feet boat, with a weight (displacement) of around 14-15 tonnes, you can NOT be a bloody amateur. It seems to me that these people were not used to sailing boats at all. They think they have rented a car - with plenty of space for all the people. What could possibly go wrong? Well, almost everything. Many of the maneuvres are just...insane. As Kris Sanders pointed out below, the starboard turn with full speed ahead at 1:25 is among the worst I've seen.
Bow thruster to starboard is also wrong ... He had almost entered the bow. He could give the engine a little ahead and rudder to the right and was free. At that point he kept himself with the fenders on the sides and then calmly he could go out. (sorry for my English)
Absolutely insane! And again at 1:58, instead of repeating the same stupid maneuver he could have turn to the right in reverse speed to beside the cat and temporary stabilize the boat. But none, he's gone in total panic and did it the worse
The IOLI catamaran on the right is in Perfect condition. We sailed on June21 with it 😂🤣 The Skipper on the Kontiki was in absolute stress Situation and didnt stop the Engine or was drunk 🥳
Ah, the classic 'dock ballet'-10/10 for entertainment, 0/10 for execution! But hey, no docking attempt is truly complete without a dramatic twist, right? We’ve all been there... well, maybe not >exactly< there. 😅⛵
You should see me... I have a full keel, heavy displacement sailboat that I've only had for fifteen years. Still I remain a certified marina hazard. Backing this puppy up is like backing a train off the tracks and going forward with it's bowsprit/heavy anchor shield, is like jousting in a tournament. I'm the undisputed champion.
At 0:35 the guy is in the box and relatively safe. Just the wrong way around. But this is much better compared to what comes later. He made damage to not one, but to 4 boats. I wonder if the insurance wil pay this at all. This could have been the most expensive vacation ever. - At 2:00 he again is in the box, but most likely he wants to escape as the other crews would have killed him for sure.
Hi Michael here. The video is very good to see that speed in a box has to be low. Can i ask you if i can use a small part of the video for learning purposes ?
Please wear gloves when handling fenders! I had a nasty accident in Croatia where the bow of the boat next to us dropped with the wave as I was trying to fender it off ours in a similar wind but less chaotic situations to this. The bow dropping ripped the fender line through my hand . Felt the pinch and thought nothing of it, till the blood started to pour out. Then realised it had torn a 2cm or 3/4 inch strip of flesh between thumb and finger, took a chunk out the palm by my little finger and also the palm in my other hand that was feeding the line. 3 stitches at Dubrovnik general hospital, anti biotics and no swimming for my holiday in the crystal clear waters. But luckily no ligament damage! I do own sailing gloves as I come from a dinghy sailing background, but couldn't find them before going on holiday. I now own 3 pairs for all weathers.
Best conditions to dock a boat in Ermioni here. The wind comes from the front, so they only had to drop the anker 15 meters before they entered the gap and they would have been drifted to the pier slowly and save. But they forgot to drop the anker first, so the conditions went from perfect to shitty in seconds.
In the Med, they do what's called a "Med Moor", you drop the anchor and back in to the seawall, then tie off to it. That way you can fit 2 - 3 boats in compared to one tied up broadside to the dock. It can be a tough maneuver (especially for new boaters) when the wind picks up but you put out a bunch of fenders and everyone helps out. I don't think anything would have helped out this crew except for never getting on the boat in the first place. And you look closely, the crew seem to be wearing company uniforms, which is a bit scary. But yes, it made me cringe!
I can relate to the anxiety of reversing to the dock, but this example is plain insane. It is even a fin keeled boat which is relatively responsive to helm and easy to handle compared to longer keel boats. If there was an instructor on the boat or nearby he/she should have taken the lead before the start of this video.
At this point probably best to just beach the boat before you do any more damage! But seriously, take her back out to the middle of the bay. Put the boat in neutral and take a breather.
Even better, go out into the bay and drop the anchor (with a lot of chain out) and wait for a professional crew from the charter company to take over. The yacht needs to be taken round to Kilada and lifted out asap coz that propeller's toast after chewing up the other yacht's chain!
@@ionutstoica-gion he did not drop the anchor at all, he should have done that before he even attempted to dock the boat. It is the first thing you do when you want to do a Med mooring.
I believe that you are unfortunately found in such situation, best solution was to stop engine, take the ropes, help from involved boats and slowly find solution to pull your boat to position when it can be parked and wait for better conditions.
1. The pontoon is at the upwind. So he doesn’t have to make all of this. 2. He has to release the anchor near at the catamaran and come up with astern.
well the charter companies allow 'RYA day skipper' to be the minimum qualification, enough said - surely this is not an owners boat, cant be.................................
J'ai été profondément malade de voir ce chaos....on a envie de secouer les gars et de les jeter par dessus bord! Un cauchemar avec une équipe sans aucune connaissance!
Being Greek, we call the Med mooring just “mooring”. It’s a pretty easy procedure even with side winds given the fact that one has done it a couple of times. These guys obviously are under qualified and or 🥴
It's impossible to watch this without horror. People are steering the boat without the slightest awareness of their actions. Such people can only bring harm to those around them.
Most of these people sre just there for drunken parties and not for sailing as such. They're incompetent and even drunk trying to maneuver a yacht they do not care about as it's not theirs. There should be an international register which will prohibit people such of these from chartering again until they have completed say, at least an RYA Day Skipper's course.
You’re still responsible for your actions and you will have to pay for the damage… But there is no license required to drive a private boat. If you are renting a boat, the rental company usually want to see some kind of certificate that you have enough knowledge before they let you drive away.
Either drunk, total beginner with any common sense or he did it intentionally because he loves bumper car riding. The amount of mistakes too many to list here, its just pathetic.
For some reason in Europe boats park stern to the dock, what makes this chaos very frequent in windy days. Here in the USA we dock in berths or side ties and I've never seen this in 50+ years sailing!
@Kendall Smith These are obviously charter boats. In Europe, which means the renters most likely have a license or other certification. They didn't choose the boats they are chartering. Clearly the people docking are incompetent.
I believe this is the most painful video I've seen in a long time!
OMG no kidding.
Painful is how dump they are, even small camper is to much for the captain to handle
Best Video ever in this range....Unbelievable!! Charter guys are the nightmare.
It's the full starboard turn while at full throttle @ 1:25 that is just insane to me. They headed straight into another boat... This is nuts.
And they did this exact maneuver like three times - each time crashing into the other boats...unbelievable. Damage would have been so much less if they just kept drifting into the other ones.
they did a port turn.. they didn't realize the boat turns around it's center, with aft moving to starboard..
this guy does not understand basics of physics and dont care about wind
Well on the upside you'll have 0 trouble with your insurance... the only upside. This is insanity and panick :(:(

The craziest part is that the 4 crew on board all wear the same polos leading me to believe they are hired crew and not vacationers...
Whoever was doing the captaining on Kontiki.... This person should never be allowed near a boat, or in a marina.... ever again....
They should just receive training
Lol
Been there. Place deceptively looking easygoing. The swell on these docks is ferocious. But the helmsman on the boat must have been on ouzo?

Spot on...
watching this video has accelerated my pulse up to 200. Keen to know about their sundowner

Is this a One Design Demo Derby?
No words to say! Without even reading a sailing book or practice, people try to sail or dock. They hire a sailing boat and here is the result.
After first pass I would not want to dock next to those boats anyway, they would be fully justified in beating the crap out of that guy
Unbelievable! I could barely watch.
We’ve moored there in much worse weather - they obviously didn’t know what they were doing.
Nothing short of criminal damage. What happened next?
Port police involved - paperwork exchanged. Gotta be the worse boat handling I've ever seen.
@@motorbiking18650 seriously, its god awful
Hard to believe he was trying the leave.
With a bow thruster?!?!
You can tell by the use of throttle if someone is talented for boating or not
License without practice my friends 😅
Why?
They might be a bit less welcome after such a deficit in seamanship.
Thor Heyerdahl would not be pleased to see this!
cosa pensa che sia una macchina?
This so stressful to watch!

😳😬 what a nightmare!!!
My heart stopped when the ladder headed towards the crew of the boat on the starboard. Bad seamanship.
C’est quoi ce mec à la barre qui reste assis en manœuvrant😱
Just goes to show that bow thrusters are worthless in a breeze. And they say full keel boats are hard to maneuver 🥴
Those are effects of bought licences without any competition and experience.

You have not seen much of Europe, my friend. I can tell..
docking stern_in is not a problem if you know how to maneuver your boat.
That's because the U.S. has harbors. The Mediterranean, by and large, has tiny cramped anchorages with little protection
@Kendall Smith These are obviously charter boats. In Europe, which means the renters most likely have a license or other certification. They didn't choose the boats they are chartering. Clearly the people docking are incompetent.

Relying too much on the bowthruster.
