    Her legs were so much longer than the other girls in the class. You can see how she is struggling at a young age to gain the control over her proportions as her muscles are still growing. It's fascinating. I simply adore Sylvie Guillem for changing ballet forever. Thank you for sharing.

    • @vermilliongecko
      @vermilliongecko 10 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Yes, I thought that. Such long legs, but she hasn't quite yet mastered how to control them. But she became my favourite ballet dancer.

    • @clararodrigues-cheung5831
      @clararodrigues-cheung5831 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah I agree. My legs are very long and it can be hard to control them. It’s especially hard when you have a growth spurt and you haven’t grown into your legs. Often your knees don’t get stretched. Clearly we can see that Sylvie has overcome that problem though 🤪

      I heard she was a gymnast before she danced.

    • @latsnojokelee6434
      @latsnojokelee6434 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Yes, She had years of gymnastics training and then there was an exchange one year between the gymnastics and ballet schools. So it’s pretty impressive that she could learn pointe that fast, but from an athletic perspective she was already very flexible and very strong before she got to the ballet school.

    • @creativecolours2022
      @creativecolours2022 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@latsnojokelee6434 It is not that difficult to learn pointe so fast if you have the appropriate muscle strength that Guillem definitely had because she came from gymnastics.
      Gymnastics improved also her flexibility because it is not enough to be naturally flexible, you have improve it. Gymnastics and ballet are not that different in the preliminary exercises that have as an aim to improve core strength and legs flexibility.

      This is Mme Jacqueline Moreau, one of the most reputated ever ballet teachers in France. I saw an interview of Marie-Agnès Gillot confirming that she was especially dedicated to support and encourage her students.
      You are si right. Any ballet student id awaiting corrections from the teachers, as it means first a way to progress, but also that teacher pays attention to her/him because she/he deserves it.

I entered the opera thrue a "sport étude" (litteraly "sport stud"y, a program where kids can have normal school on the morning a high level sport the afternoon in order to become professional) of gymnastic. 🤨That IS SYLVIA Guillem in front (tallest) stumbling a bit like the rest of the YOUNG ones. SHE PRACTICED, HAS INCREDIBLE GOD GIVEN TALENT! THAT, my dear, was the point of the video... to show her dedication at such a young age.

    Well it also must be noted that she was a gymnast at a young age before she decided to switch to ballet at age 11/12. So she already had attained the muscular training and balance to help facilitate her ballet training. Much harder for a person starting after the age of 10 with no dance or gym training at all (tho still very possible for them to excell). :)

    i started doing hardcore ballet when i was fourteen too. I had a little bit of dance before hand (4 years) but it was maybe one class a day. I'm now sixteen as well and its really interesting. I've noticed that most people who start later can still be really good if they try. All you have to do is try and don't let anyone else get to you. I am dancing now at The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia (USA) and its great there. So just keep up the good work! You'll be great!

    For those wondering about the spoken French oh, I only understand a few words here and there. I hear her saying to elongate, hold the head up, hold the arms underneath, to watch something, all of which would make perfect sense to anyone who has had a dance class! 😂 I apologize for not being able to translate more. I just discovered Sylvie! I don't know why I never heard of her before. There is a video of her on TH-cam dancing to Bolero which is out of this world. No wonder Nureyev favored her.

    Not to be missed in Athens as Kelly Ap pointed out, since Sylvie's ventures in classical repertory in our days are most rare and previous. I remember with such emotion her unforgettable Manon at La Scala in 2011 with Massimo Murru. This time in Athens at Megaron Mousikis (Megaron Athens Concert Hall) Murru will be partnering her once more this time in "Marguerite et Armand" (December 25-December 30). She will also presenting prior to this in Athens "Sacred Monsters" (December 19-23).

    I agree...I actually didn't start training seriously until I was 12 but I was able to improve extremely quickly and was quite strong, only because I'd been a rhythmic gymnast for many years prior. I have no idea if I'd ever have been able to achieve a professional level technique had it not been for gymnastics (even though I had to 're-learn' and undo many bad habits.

    @theamazingsoter maybe metaphoric is not the right word. but regardless, i just meant that in a stylistic way not literally or about their fundamentals. I know that they do none of the same things or even close i just meant that they are both physically strenuous activities that are graceful and artistic at some level. I am a pre professional ballerina and I know that they are not in any way the same. actually I was calling out someone elses comment at the time who had said they were the same.

  • @icantpirrouette13
    @icantpirrouette13 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @icantpirrouette13 um just to clarify cause u all hate me i didn't mean to compare them structurally i am in a pre professional ballet program and i know what it is . ALL I MEANT TO SAY IS THAT THEY ARE BOTH PHYSICALLY STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES THAT ARE FOCUSED ON BEAUTY OF MOVEMENT. THAT IS ALL. PLEASE STOP HATING ON ME. although i stand by the fact that tall people tend to be better at ballet than gymnastics simply for a structural reason of fitting the apparatus with operating room.
