They make them for left handers? I didn't know that. I'm terrible at sharpening things, and I sometimes wonder if it is because I'm sharpening them with my left hand, and they're right-handed tools.
Would recommend greasing before putting back together, will make it easier to take apart next time, will operate smoother and prevents parts seizing and getting stuck (like the screws). Although you probably don't leave yours as long as mine between sharpening 😂

Thanks for your inspiration. I’ve got some tools that might need some attention. One in particular which has a spring identical to the one on your secateur. (That’s a new term for me, call them pruners) This one is my wife’s inheritance from her grandfather and have fewer pieces, and looks antique. At his funeral (20 years ago), my wife suggested I trim his grape vines which had grown a bit wild. It was something he had kept well maintained but had gone unattended for a while. Many of his friends came by and took trimmings. His secateurs were quite sharp and we’re a pleasure to use. I think they could use a little sharpening and cleaning.

Great video!! I disassemble, clean and sharpen my wife's pruning shears and other metal equipment and use an inexpensive magnetic cup to hold the metal parts as I work. I tend to loose those small pieces far too easily.

Very nice. It is still winter in Montana, but we are having a 20 degree higher in temperatures than is usual. Looking at install a green house in very early spring as the snow might be all gone soon. I would also oil all metal surfaces, in particular where wear is evident, before assembly. It would not only protect the metal, but make operation easier. Too bad we can't all sit down for tea. In Denmark, we also did that, and it is sorely missed.
Hi, Katrina. New subscriber here. Ive been loving your channel and learning alot. Your English allotment aesthetic is just wonderful to watch as an American. We just dont have anything like it here. May I suggest an addition to your tool kit? A brass wire brush. That stone will get more rounded as time goes on. The brush will get in the hard to reach spots. Brass is weaker than steel so it wont wear out the metal. As a machinist that cleans and sharpens tools for a living, you did an excellent job on that clean and sharpen job. Pro quality! :)
@@homegrowngarden Ah. We have different grades of brass wire brush here from firm to soft. A firm toothbrush is good in a pinch. Thanks for the tutorial today. Ill get some shears like that.
Steel wool will do the trick, and it gets into corners. Or pretty much anything that is softer than metal and harder than the gunk you want to remove. The scratchy side of a kitchen scrubber should work, too.

Thank you for this easy to follow guide. I purchased the grey block used by yourself but was not sure how to use it. The sharpening stone is different from the one I ordered (sandstone color). What was the one you were using? I also cleaned up my hedging sheers and was very impressed at how easy the grey blok removed the build up of grime. Thanks for taking the time to do video 🙂

I remember as a child reading Sherlock Holmes - he’d ask for a “torch” when he needed to illuminate something in a dark place. A battery powered lamp, as it turns out.
I enjoy cleaning and sharpening my garden tools. I think the crean mate is amazing. I also use ARS cleaning solution for gardening tools. It melts away that grime. I keep a can of scrubbing bubbles bathroom cleaner in my kit too.
I was just looking at Niwaki the other day for sharpening tools and saw their care and sharpening set which I got. So this is very timely as I was wondering if there was a good tutorial on how to use it. Fantastic you are as always. Loving your Run and Fly dungees too. I owned Felcos for years, took them to bits and sharpened them regularly ... then I discovered Japanese-steel secateurs which I find dramatically better. Cut better, stay sharper longer, and have a catch that you can open easily. I find that the catch on Felcos frequently closes by itself and can't be operated with bulky gloves on - Okatsune No.103 same price as Felco Model 2. Crean Mate (SIC) is amazing, recommend that.
I have a few Japanese tools as well, I mainly use the thinner snips for cutting flowers ans dead heading. I’m yet to buy a Niwaki pair of bypass secateurs. I’m waiting for a show to test them all out in person!
I was looking at the state of mine yesterday, and they are as bad. It's far too easy to think sure I'm done using X tool, and throw them on a shelf in the shed. But it really does pay to give them a good clean. At least you know that the next time you need them, they will be in good working order. If you need to give them a good clean before you can use them. You're also more likely to put that job off until another day/week. Cheers for the reminder to get that sorted.

Hello! New subscriber from USA! I have been researching how to sharpen my secateurs but mine are Fiskars brand and I don’t think I can disassemble them. If not I’ll be ordering Felco 2, now that I’ve seen you do it. Besides gardening my other hobby is fountain pens so I have a “need” to take something apart, clean it and prep it for future use. It's good to see your tools being maintained. May I suggest that you apply a drop of oil to the surfaces that rotate against each other as you assemble them, rather than just at the end? Your Felcos will thank you!
I’m a professional full time gardener. I use my secateurs pretty much everyday of my life .they are a cheap pair I bought in a supermarket about five years ago , can’t remember the last time I sharpened them and the only lubrication they get is a quick squirt of WD40 about once a month and they cut fine . What is important is to always pull open the two sides of the stem you are cutting so that the sides of the blade are not being pinched by them .This makes all the difference
I see where you’re coming from - we have two pairs of secateurs in the house, one is from the Sixties or Seventies and has been absolutely mangled by improper sharpening, the other pair is from the Eighties or Nineties and has never been sharpened. Guess what, they’re both cutting fine, i.e. they still make fairly clean cuts with little effort. Now they’re both Felcos, and I do believe they’re better than others, but a) that mainly applies to cutting very thick and hard stuff and b) a huge advantage is that I can still get parts: I’m planning to replace the blade on the older one as a favour and surprise for my dad. But yes, they’re not kitchen knives and they don’t need a lot of attention.
A bad craftsman always blames his tools - because a bad craftsman dose not look after them. End of November I clean and sharpen all my tools and coat all wooden handles with a little linseed oil Metal surfaces coated with a little oil and everything is ready for the new season
I accuse Monty Don of being given brand new tools every episode of Gardeners' World. The most annoying thing is my garden tools are so mucky by comparison. A timely episode here.
i have to admit i probably spend way to much time keeping my tools clean and sharp! my secateurs look essentially new! I got my set of Felco's really cheap as ex display ones being sold off by a garden centre, the only defect is a hole in the end of the handle where they were anchored to the stand!
Great little video! im absolutely gutted i was chopping up bits for my bombfire... and ended up chucking my felcos in with the wood... not bothered to buy anymore for now got various verities lying around! and primarily use a saw/loppers now if i can help it!
A six sided socket would give you the best chance of undoing that tight screw without damage. I just looked at my secateurs, they’re looking horrible so I shall be doing some tool maintenance too.
Aah Katrina! You've got me spending money again - Crean Mate and Camellia Oil now ordered and on their way to me...but at least I won't have to pay Felco to do it again! (And I have whetstones already for my kitchen knives).😁👍

I inherited my dad's old left hand ones, probably over 30 years old. Quality product are Felco. Need to get myself a right handed pair

Paraffin is really good for cleaning and breaking down grease and grim.

Cut better, stay sharper longer, and have a catch that you can open easily. I find that the catch on Felcos frequently closes by itself and can't be operated with bulky gloves on - Okatsune No.103 same price as Felco Model 2. Crean Mate (SIC) is amazing, recommend that.
I have a few Japanese tools as well, I mainly use the thinner snips for cutting flowers ans dead heading. I’m yet to buy a Niwaki pair of bypass secateurs. I’m waiting for a show to test them all out in person!
I was looking at the state of mine yesterday, and they are as bad. It's far too easy to think sure I'm done using X tool, and throw them on a shelf in the shed. But it really does pay to give them a good clean.
At least you know that the next time you need them, they will be in good working order. If you need to give them a good clean before you can use them. You're also more likely to put that job off until another day/week.

Hello! New subscriber from USA! I have been researching how to sharpen my secateurs but mine are Fiskars brand and I don’t think I can disassemble them. If not I’ll be ordering Felco 2, now that I’ve seen you do it. Besides gardening my other hobby is fountain pens so I have a “need” to take something apart, clean it and prep it for future use. It's good to see your tools being maintained. May I suggest that you apply a drop of oil to the surfaces that rotate against each other as you assemble them, rather than just at the end? Your Felcos will thank you!

I’m a professional full time gardener. I use my secateurs pretty much everyday of my life .they are a cheap pair I bought in a supermarket about five years ago , can’t remember the last time I sharpened them and the only lubrication they get is a quick squirt of WD40 about once a month and they cut fine . What is important is to always pull open the two sides of the stem you are cutting so that the sides of the blade are not being pinched by them .This makes all the difference
I see where you’re coming from - we have two pairs of secateurs in the house, one is from the Sixties or Seventies and has been absolutely mangled by improper sharpening, the other pair is from the Eighties or Nineties and has never been sharpened. Guess what, they’re both cutting fine, i.e. they still make fairly clean cuts with little effort.
Now they’re both Felcos, and I do believe they’re better than others, but a) that mainly applies to cutting very thick and hard stuff and b) a huge advantage is that I can still get parts: I’m planning to replace the blade on the older one as a favour and surprise for my dad.
But yes, they’re not kitchen knives and they don’t need a lot of attention.

A bad craftsman always blames his tools - because a bad craftsman dose not look after them. End of November I clean and sharpen all my tools and coat all wooden handles with a little linseed oil Metal surfaces coated with a little oil and everything is ready for the new season
Agree, we don't want to be a bad craftsman/craftswoman by not looking after our tools.
I accuse Monty Don of being given brand new tools every episode of Gardeners' World. The most annoying thing is my garden tools are so mucky by comparison. A timely episode here.

i have to admit i probably spend way to much time keeping my tools clean and sharp! my secateurs look essentially new! I got my set of Felco's really cheap as ex display ones being sold off by a garden centre, the only defect is a hole in the end of the handle where they were anchored to the stand!
Great little video! im absolutely gutted i was chopping up bits for my bombfire... and ended up chucking my felcos in with the wood... not bothered to buy anymore for now got various verities lying around! and primarily use a saw/loppers now if i can help it!

A six sided socket would give you the best chance of undoing that tight screw without damage. I just looked at my secateurs, they’re looking horrible so I shall be doing some tool maintenance too.
