Laura, I know this is an old video, but for the first time today, while referencing this video, I took apart my Felcos and cleaned and sharpened them all by myself! 💪 I don’t know why I’m so crazy proud of this, but thank you for being an amazing resource! 💚
I'm frightened to take mine apart😮😬😵💫
On the dance floor, I'm Mr. Two-Left-Feet. In the workshop, All Thumbs. And yet: my 13-year-old Felco #2, which until yesterday did not snap back after making a cut, is once again a happy and useful tool. Excellent video. Thank you.
I have watched a dozen pruner sharpening videos over 2 days, this is by far the best.
Thanks.
Great video. I do agree with the earlier comment on using a lighter touch on the sharpening and matching the angle. This said, I have been using Felco 2 pruners for 47 years now! As a professional and gardening. They are the BEST.
Wouldn't that prematurely wear down the metal? I know with kitchen knives no heat (cold whetstone) is why they
A. Stay sharp
B. Last longer
I lost my felco 7 in a compost barrel. 6 years later I dumped it and found my favorite tool. Rusty And just a dirty lump. My husband worked on them like you show and thendipped the bare handle in some yellow goo which hardened to replace the old red stuff. Good as new and used as my #2 pair. The thumb catch never worked again. Annoying. Now I plan to take apart my "new" pruners. Thanks!
Thank you for demonstrating so well with tools that actually were rusty and dirty!
This is a fantastic step by step easy to follow video, with very relatable explanations from start to finish. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together.
Sharpen the blade before assembly, makes it easy and efficient
Thank you for the video. Clear instructions for a new gardener.
Just scrubbed my two year old Felco 2 pruners. Replaced the blade and the spring. Now they are like new. The old blade was also sharpened and saved for the next maintenance day. Parts were purchased from Felco. Thanks for the detailed video.
Thank you SO much for this really helpful video. I got stuck at one point trying to reassemble all the parts: the thumb release "spring washer" (a new term for me!) wasn't connecting properly to lock the secateurs closed. It wasn't on the same level so to speak. Then I re-watched your video and learned that I had the blade plate facing the wrong way in addition to needing to set the thumb lock in place before the main screw of the cutting blade. Et voila! Maintenant tout marche tres bien! Merci beaucoup!! Carole a Canada.
So grateful for this video, I needed to replace the blade on mine and thanks to this I easily replaced it and gave it a good cleaning.
So love these pruners that have replacement parts instead of needing to buy an all new pruner if something gets broken or damaged.
Thanks for making such a great product
I would love you to do the video on the different types of Felcos.
I lost my pruners in the garden for a few wet days. When I found them they were usable but after cleaning them along with your instructions they are great! Thanks
Thanks so much, a GREAT video with clear instructions and super camera work. Well edited, good audio and video.
This video was well done and helpful. I was looking for instructions about how to take apart my FELCO pruners so I could sharpen the blade on a Tormek grinder along with many other garden tools prior to Spring. The blade is now incredibly sharp. Thanks -
I'm getting ready to clean my felco 2 and this is very clear and easy instructions. Thanks 😊
Thanks so much for this. I've been afraid to try taking my pruners apart but you make it look so easy.
Awesome video, I know you did this video a while ago but I have just got my first felco 2 pruners for mothers day and I want to take care of them. Thank you ❤❤
Thank you. I am going to try cleaning and hopfully fix my Felco pruner which doesn't cut right before I purchase another one.
Materials: stiff wire brush
SOS pad
7 mm socket
5/16 nut driver
sharpering tool
Felco® 980 Tool Spray
Felco F990 Pruner Grease
hot soapy watet
a container for soapy water
dirty Felco pruner
You will need an 8mm socket, not a 7mm socket. The 7mm would fit the thumb catch screw and I would recommend to leave that screw alone unless the thumb catch is too loose.
Very helpful! I come back to this again and again.
Great Video! You have removed a lot of doubt in my mind! Just bought a Felco 10 LH pruners, and was dreading the thought of dismantling them in the future. Thank you v much!
Thank you so much. I upgraded to a pair of Felco 15's last year as a b-day gift to myself, and I used this tutorial to clean and reassemble them today, in preparation for a new season.
Thanks you for clear and concise directions! Please do prepare a video of all the different types of pruners and what to use them for.
Did you forget to lubricate them when done ?
I love my Felco #14. It’s a pruner would last rest of my life, top notch quality.
Brilliant video! Thanks for such clear instructions and helpful tips on the action of the secateurs. I have just dismantled and thoroughly cleaned my no.2 Felco secateurs , it was a breeze thanks to you .
Thankyou for the video. I just cleaned up my FELCO’s. Works like a treat !
Thanks for this video. I should have watched this before I took my pruners apart in the past. I never knew about the hydrophobic grease. My pruners are clean and seem to work really smoothly. Thank you!!
I would love to more about the different types of Felco pruners ~ just got my first #2 yesterday!!☺️
Great video. Very clear presentation.
You saved me so much time and frustration. Thank you.
Thank you so much... I took mine apart and now I am watching you on how I get them back together!!!! ugh lol
Informative video.
Brass wire brushes in particular can be quite abrasive and can easily scratch the surface of aluminum.
I will use a nylon bristle brush or soft kitchen scrubber.
Maintain control of the sharpener during use.
Follow and keep the original blade bevel, angle and radius.
Medium sharpening pressure if the blade bevel has somewhat visible scratches.
Light sharpening pressure for the final finish.
The edge is sharp when no light reflects on the sharpened edge.
If you see a tiny silver line on the edge it's still dull.
Very shallow blade nicks or dings will require hand filing if desired.
Otherwise replace the blade.
A cheap tiny soft face mallet is best for delicate parts.
An automotive magnetic parts dish will keep your parts from running away.
Left my Felco 2 pruners outside and went on TH-cam to learn how to clean them. Very clear instructions. Thanks so much
Thanks so much. Very informative video. Helped me with sharpening angles. Well done!
Well done...thank you! Got me psyched to clean and sharpen mine!
Nice video, felco have to be the best pruners ever.I have had one pair for twenty plus years and still going strong.
I would love a video with different ones! Loppers and all please!
Great video. I have all the grease and cleaners and stone at hand and it is soaking as I type this. Going to be a surprise for my wife who loves her #2.
Thank you! Great explanation! 😊💕
I’m off to get the proper oil to clean my loved Felcos but also was wondering what care you give them after each use? Thanks so much for your informative video.
Very clear simple instructions. Well filmed and so helpful for me. Thanks. I really want to take better care of my tools!
I love my Felco secateurs too. I look after them always.
Thank you. This was an awesome instructional.
Great video until the sharpening part. Way too much pressure applied to that stone!!! To begin with, it is unsafe. You slip and you cut yourself badly. Secondly, if your angle is not correct (and even if it is correct) you will damage the blade. Simply find the find the bevel (correct angle), apply light to medium pressure pressure and let the tool do the work in small circular motions. Use it the same way you would use an axe puck, NOT like you would a Corona sharpener or a Speedy Sharp tool.
You need a lot of pressure to sharpen a blade at first. Your only lessen that pressure gradually and finally when stropping the blade. I sharpened kitchen knives in a professional environment for my chefs for years. Even a kitchen knife should be sharpened with a lot of pressure, at first.
I agree you need alot of pressure to start.
That's just not accurate.
Never going to sharpen it with low pressure.
No harm in high pressure. Finish off with lighter pressure, but if you need to remove some metal, you need to use some pressure.
@@stevenkelby2169 "The most amount of pressure you can put on it, the better." and "Just drag it along the blade with as much pressure as you can muster." Those are two quotes from this video. Not only is this advice wrong, it is unsafe. Moreover, it contradicts Felco's own instructions on the 903. They recommend light pressure in a circular motion at a 23 degree angle. Generally speaking, if you have to apply more than medium / moderate pressure when sharpening, your grit is too high. Go to a coarser stone, and increase grit accordingly. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
I just bought the Felco 903 sharpener, on the description on how to us it they recommend a completely different way on how to use the tool to sharpen the blade.
informative with great presentation skills. camera work also first-rate !
THANK YOU!
You are a joy to learn from!
Do you think I could use the sharpener on my kitchen knives??? Many thanks
Very good video thanks 🙂👍❤
A very helpful video. Had mine for 4 years and needed a clean up. Many thanks.
Thank you for the great instruction on how to service my Felco 2 pruners. Mine are very old, and the coating on the handles has cracked and broken off. Is there some kind of Dip to recoat the hand grip?
You can get new handle sleeves from Felco. You cut the old ones off and slide the new ones on. They are quite loose when you get them but once you’ve fitted them submerge the handles in boiling water and the new ones ‘shrink to fit’ and that’s you good to go for another 10 years or so !
@@johnenglish929 Thank you!
On cutting wires with a Felco pruner: They actually are designed for cutting wires!! Check out the semi-circle at the hinge end. That will hold the wire when. cutting. It keeps the wire away from the blade itself.
You are the best! Thanks so much!
yes please create a video about different kinds and sizes of pruners
Thank you!!! This was SUPER clear and so helpful. I'm curious what would you say about ADKMTNS's (here below, sumitted i year ago response and advice about the sharpening work?
Great video. So helpful.
great tutorial ...
Great comprehensive video. Yes, I'd love to see video on various pruners. I have the # 8, but am thinking of buying # 2's
Why?
Thanks for posting! Very informative and great explanation of the disassemble and rebuilding. I do have to say though the sharpening technique described had me cringing. You should never apply that kind of pressure to force anything across the cutting edge. The file should glide smooth with little to no pressure. Plz be safe when sharpening anything and maybe consider cut resistant gloves.
Also, I think you missed mentioning a very important feature when you spoke of sometimes cutting wire and possibly having to replace the blade. There is a notch on the very inside edge that is specifically designed for light wire cutting. You can see it when the pruners are wide open.
Again, your video is great! It helped me and I’m sure countless others. Thank you!
I hope not to sound like I’m “mansplaining”! lol, just wanted to add a few things I picked up in the 40+ years I’ve been an arborist.
PS - I find Scotch bright pads work way better than Brillo for that out of the box new look. ✌️🌿🌲
Fabulous....especially for this novice!
Yes, I would like to see a video on the different F series Felco pruners.
th-cam.com/video/NxMxcBh2rm4/w-d-xo.html
Thank you very much. Very nice and useful tutorial. However:
13:03 Do NOT use maximum force when sharpening the blade. Do it gently. Maximum force is ruining your blade. The sharpening process will remover material from the blade. Your aim is not to remove as much material as possible. You aim to get the blade as sharp as possible, and this is possible without removing much material of the blade.
Great video! Have you happened to use the Felco 905 sharpening tool? Don't see any reviews or comments on it....seems to be a new version.
Hi David, yes the FELCO 905 is a new accessory that has recently been launched. It is a compact tool and combines several simple maintenance operations. A few strokes with the standard 90° tungsten carbide sharpener helps maintain the cutting edge of the blades. For finer sharpening, a second carbide stone ensures a perfectly sharp cutting edge. Finally, two 7 mm and 8 mm hexagon sockets allow for easy adjustment and tightening of the various moving elements of the pruning shears.
But it cannot be used on left-handed or anvil pruning shears or power tools.
Where is the best place to buy felco pruners? Amazon maybe but are the really swish felco or not
Bravissima perfetto grazie ❤
Thank you so much for this video! It was very helpful!
Pretty cocky wearing a bright white shirt! LOL Thanks for the great video >.
srrriously! No gardening apron. sheesh. lol
Lol! Same thought!! :D
Hey-she's good!
Tip Do not remove, or adjust, the thumb catch if it is working to your satisfaction. If the thumb catch is working it is best to leave it alone.
Thank you! I have just bought the grease, lubricant and sharpening tool. Do I need to get a socket and nut driver or can you adjust and take apart without those? I have 3 pairs in different sizes and use them almost every day so need to be able to do this myself!
get an 8mm combo wrench it's cheaper and works fine too. add a 7mm one if you want to tamper with the locking mechanism if it's not working properly. if it does lock properly, leave it alone. 😉
if you want to use a ratchet, a 1/4" one will be easier to use and less bulky for that task.
Why WD-40 is not recommended?
Is there somewhere in Australia that you can buy the Felco 980 spray or lubricant?
Soak in vinegar to remove rust ect.
Why is WD-40 not recommended
Best felco for hard dead wood?
Get one of their anvil pruners, not bypass.
How do I wharpen my 322?

Hahaha!!! In the world of collectables and antiques, we call that discoloration, 'Patina.' We can charge more for patina but not for stains.
I am thinking of purchasing F7 or F8 pruners. What do you think?
Hi Barbara, they are both tools for big hands the difference is only in the handle. The FELCO 7 has a rotating handle that serves to reduce the effort required during use to improve comfort and facilitate cutting. It depends more on how often you will use your pruning shears. Don't hesitate if you have any more questions :)
I've never put my felco pruners in water, I've been using them for over 20 years. Also you don't have to clean them before you sharpen them. I like to keep things simple and not have to buy a bunch of products in order to clean my pruners.
Why is wd40 not recommended?
Felco sponsored video. Laura did say u can use WD40
might be some months late but to sum up why WD-40 is not a great lubricant for anything:
It's a water-displacement spray/penetrating oil; it's a solvent for losening rust and removing grime. The lubricating oils in it is fairly volatile and evaporates leaving very little left to do actual lubrication (only around 15% of the actual content of WD-40 is (volatile) lubricants).
It's good for lubing up rusty or tight parts to get them moving as its penetrating, but those things should be lubed up with a proper lubricant afterwards to ensure long-term lubrication (can be things like lithium grease, silicone lubricant, brunox etc). WD-40 do sell actual lubricants, both silicone and lithium, but the famed multi-spray is not a substitute for proper lubricants.
@@Fiddepik many thanks for explaining.
@@Fiddepik thank you for great explanation and taking the time to do that! Much appreciated...
@@Fiddepik Agree with @Hikelandia. WD-40 will do better than nothing, but 3 in 1 oil, or ATF oil is what you should be using if you are going to purchase something.
Why not use wd40?
Please do video on different types of fellow products

My darling I'm glad it's not just me letting my clippers that bad so that's why I'm watching this video.
What the pric in pakistan
What do you use the grease for ? Did I miss that bit?
Great video, by the way - really helpful.
Just watched it through again - got it !
why do Swiss use imperial nut? the real word is metric
Great video! Thank you. But don't you want to wear some thin gloves-latex or vinyl?
"jaggedness" happens because you're using a carbide scraper and way too much pressure. a stone is more appropriate. Carbide, while it can sharpen steel, eats it up and damages your tools.
Be sure to get them dry I service them and most of the problems are from rust!!!
the sweet spot doesn't exist on my felco 2 spent 1 hour on it and i am about to scream and brake this computer so I'm just going to tighten it and call it a day :)
Adjust the nut until the bottom 2/3 of blade is rubbing against the opposite anvil, when closing the pruners. Then the toothed pawl should be assembled to lock that nut tightness adjustment.
Tom
I wasn't sure what she meant about that until I actually did it. Yes, you have to finagle it a bit.
This lady is gorgeous but she didn't sharpen the edge at all. She only scratched the edge along...and rather crudely. Felco have essentially put up a video of their own blade ruination. Perhaps the idea was to demonstrate that anyone can sharpen a Felco without fear...or most basic knowledge...or safety concerns (some omissions were noted in comments).
Ladies, for the love of God, just give your Felco tools to your lesser halves to sharpen (we do get bored otherwise) and don't get your beautiful hands dirty! Let us, orcs do the job (sound of thumps against a hairy chest here).
For those who believe that they should still sharpen the blades:
1) Clean in soapy water first. Then submerge into water mixed with citric acid (can buy a pack literally anywhere). You will be amazed just how shiny the blade will become (if not stainless). You will probably then be dumping most of your metals household tools into citric acid after learning how well it works thereafter.
2) After disassembly, sharpen the blade part separately i.e. when it is completely detached, much, much easier.
3) Sharpen the blade using water stones or Edge Pro or Tormek or lansky's at least. 3x times easier, 100x better quality that will last for much longer.
4) Sharpen across the blade not along. Alas the beautiful lady in the video didn't actually sharpen the blade, but only created a micro rip along the edge which won't last at all.
5) Assemble back and apply any water repellent or a water dispenser a.k.a. WD-40 or ballistol.
6) Enjoy your shiny, super sharp, super durable new edge.
Sharpening is a whole separate art. In Japan people dedicate their entire careers to sharpening techniques.
Ok so they are not that dirty. But compared to that white shirt they are.
I see that no one replies to these comments. But there goes: There's absolutely no way to loosen the nuts on Felco F5 High preformance shears.
there's only one nut on the F5 and from memory it's a Nyloc™ one with a plastic insert acting as a thread locker. you just need more leverage. or clamp the nut in a vice and use the handle as a lever. 😉
Euw!
Just buy new ones!
.
Anyone who doesn't realise that I'm flagrantly joking is incredibly sad, and I feel sorry for them 😶
Oh brother. I think the objective here was to make a video. Maintenance doesn't need to be so involved.
