    This Christmas, we decided to update and significantly improve our most watched video - we made this video in January, following some comments on our older drilling video. DIY Sea Glass Drilling & Jewellery Making at Home.
    In this video:
    - We answer all the questions you asked us about, which drill to use; how to fit a multi-chuck; what drill bits we use; and we cover basic maintenance.
    - Nicole steps the difficulty up to show you, in detail, how to drill, a COD marble; a glass stopper stem; milk glass and a host of mudlarking & Beachcombing finds.
    - After drilling each piece, Nicole makes makes a one-off piece of jewellery for our ETSY store!
    If you have a Dremel on your wish list, or you have one and are looking for tips, you will not want to miss this in-depth look at how to the most out of it!
    When we filmed this last year, we had such a covering of snow that a trip to the beach would have been... unrewarding! So, we went off to the banks of the River Eden to share with you the Wintery loveliness of Fife. Best of all, you can enjoy it from the warmth of your own home!
    We hope you enjoy this step by step tutorial - please leave a comment to let us know if we left any questions unanswered.
    Thank you so much!
    Wishing you all the very best that the season has to offer!
    Drills:
    We can recommend any cordless rotary tool with at least 12V / RPM 25.000 and one that accepts a multi chuck for small drill bits
    Dremel 8220 cordless
    amzn.to/30OQnNL
    Dremel 3000 - mains powered
    amzn.to/30Xf0Ig
    Dremel Flexshaft
    amzn.to/3FINQUC
    1mm Diamond Tip Drill Bits - this is the shape I use ( they come in other sizes like 1.2mm and 1.4mm )
    amzn.to/3sGYO9M
    Multi Chuck - fits dremels, and should fit most models (check with manufacturer)

    I've only just started drilling sea glass and I find it totally absorbing and therapeutic, all my stresses go away for a while, very relaxing.
    I know, fully, about them Parkside cordless drills, I was looking at my dodgy battery whilst I heard about yours; in MY opinion Parkside are not very environmentally responsible, not making replacement batteries available, also the shop, that rhymes with riddles in my opinion are equally environmentally irresponsible. I did purchase a rechargeable Parkside drill but next time it will be a Dremel, if they sell replacement batteries.....
    I really enjoyed your video, thank you for sharing it.....

    BTW you can build a converter so you can use any battery quite easy I do it with old power tools it's pretty simple you don't always need the brands own battery, there are lots of tutorials online!! I hate replacing powertools, also check battery step ups!!

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nice one!! Yes, you're absolutely right... Never yet tried making putting on together, but might well give it a shot! It is so annoying when the battery dies after the company has changed their designs or stopped selling replacements, making the powertool redundant! Many thanks! I'll give 'step ups' a look into!
      Cheers!

    Very excited to come upon your video on drilling sea glass and making jewelry! I have very lovely glass pieces I found on my many trips to Florida beaches and would love to be able to make a necklace. There are about five chunky and irregular shaped pieces I would use with small ones as well to make the necklace. Do you have a video on drilling chucky pieces and the use of cords to string them? I would like to place small metal beads between them as well. Please do a video on this idea, I would be so grateful!

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much Phyllis! Chunky pieces drill similar to marbles , and just like marbles they can shatter due to tension inside the glass ! I would try drilling them at their thinnest point so you can fit a setting or centre drill them so you can string a leather cord through them... We've got another drilling video and one for pebbles if you are looking for some more tips !

    Nicole, your hands are so steady and sure. It is a privilege to watch you work making treasure! Question: have you drilled rocks like this? I find amazing river rocks, mostly quartz types and wondered if drilling would work. My hubby’s always asking what I plan to do with them because I have jars and vases all over the house. If I could drill them I think I would hang them in the sunlight 😊

    Beautiful jewellery. Thank you for making it seem so much easier to drill sea glass than it was in my mind! Where do you get the lovely pendant fixings from?

    Hi, just stumbled upon your lovely and informative video. Thank you very much. I have wonderful glass, etc from Lake Erie in Ohio, USA. One of our Great Lakes. Anyway, I wondered what was the “plasticine” you used as an underwater drilling base? And where do you purchase it? I’ve always used a sponge but your technique looks more efficient.
    Thanks!

      Thanks so much for asking! I buy the cheap plasticine, intended for children. It's quite firm and I leave it to dry a bit - it's just there as a buffer when you drill through the glass. I tried wood and a sponge but wasn't happy with how they both behaved under water... I've been using plasticine for about 6 years now! I think play doh would be too soft, try to get something firmer ( check dollar tree or similar )

    A great video! I’m trying to find the section that you attach to the stone to make it into a pendant but not sure what to search for, please can you advise?

      Hmm we have a lot of crafting videos in a playlist where you’ll see close ups of jewellery making and how bails are attached. This video focuses more on the drilling aspect 😊

      They are sterling silver findings - check with your local silver supplier what they might have 😃 There are head pins and spacer beads used in these designs.

    Hi! Love this video. Did the clay in the plastic container you use come long like that? I have polymer clay but it’s a more thicker short rectangle shape. Thank you!

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! The polymer clay is for children, I guess you could even use something like play doh... or squish it so it fits your needs!

    Great video - am going to be drilling a heap of seaglass and it's great to see you do it so expertly! What is the finding called that holds the marble you are wearing round your neck? I've been trying to find these type of findings but don't know what it's called! Hope you don't mind me asking! Love what you do!

      Thanks for asking Susan! I use different types of chain for different types of necklaces... My advise would be to order one chain of each design you like and find the ones you love most!

    Hey guys, thank you for the awesome video! May I ask what type of plasticine you are using? I bought some from Amazon that looks like the one in the video, but it doesn't behave the way I expected. Any guidance would be highly appreciated!

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just buy the cheap one from a pound shop ( or dollar tree, depending on where you are ) - it's supposed to be for children. It's fairly hard and I leave it to dry - it's just supplies a slight buffer....

    Hi, my daughter has been collecting seaglass for ages and I have been making jewellery with it using wire wrapping or superglue. I am very interested in drilling instead of glueing but a bit worried about the cost of a drill. can you recommend a reasonably inexpensive but powerful enough drill to start with.

    • @scottishmudlarking

      Hi! That's cool! Its such a nice way to spend time and be creative! :D
      We'd suggest a Parkside rotary tool. It is Lidl's own brand of tools - they make a very good rotary tool - so long as it matches the specs we cover in this video, and I think they all do, it will do the job very well. It was around £20 the last time we saw them in stock - I think they have a tool collection for sale around now, if you are anywhere near a Lidl.
      Thank you so much! Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

    if you paint your sea glass with clear nail polish varnish it makes it look wet it is beautiful just sharing a tip with you

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Michael! I reckon the nail polish would chip off - you can rub a tiny amount of unscented oil into sea glass but wearing it on your skin will achieve the same effect :)

    Just curious how long a drill bit is effective? How many glass pieces do you drill before you switch out the bit?

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question!! Usually around 20 pieces of glass and then you can drill pottery ( except bone China!) … I always keep drill bits to use them on pottery or sometimes they help getting sand out of beads 😊
