    Its time to get drilling sea glass, pottery, and shells! A few weeks ago, when making the earrings for our first giveaway (congratulations again, Juliet!), Nicole asked if there was any interest in a glass drilling demonstration/tutorial. Thanks so much to everyone who expressed interest in seeing that - today, Nicole will show you how she drills glass, pottery and shells with a handheld rotary tool, and gives you her top 10 tips to help anyone trying this for themselves. First tip - practice on pieces you are not very fond of because its very easy to break glass while drilling, and, even with experience, some pieces will break because of stresses in the glass that you just can’t see or predict.
    We start our journey a few miles up the road from Dundee, where we go on a mission to find craft materials for today’s project! We go hunting for drift wood, pottery, and, sea shells, that Nicole will use to demonstrate drilling, before going on to make a sun-catcher/mobile. While collecting our craft materials, we make a few unexpected finds - a really nice, large piece of blue glass, a clay bottle bottom… All in all a very nice day on the Fife coast!
    Back home, Nicole takes you through the steps of drilling sea glass, and shows you how you can make a sun-catcher - to speed things up, we make a four stranded mobile, but, the sky is the limit - you could scale this up any way you like and end up with an incredible coastal chandelier!!

    Hi there, I just found your channel. Ive been trying to watch a ton of videos about drilling small stones and this is by far the most helpful thank you so much! Thank you so much for this video, I learned a lot 🥰

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, glad you found us! Lovely to hear the video was helpful! Thank you! :D
      I use a rotary drill - a dremel or equivalent works fine - I use both a dremel and an unbranded drill, both do a good job. If it is battery powered, it must be at least a 7volt power supply. I prefer battery power for safety with water involved. I use a 1.4 mm diamond tipped drill bit and a special chuck (a multi chuck) to hold that bit.
      So, I do not drill semi-precious stones - I have tried with agates and they tend to shatter. It may be that, after tumbling, they are better prepared for drilling, I can't say for sure.
      I wish you lots of luck, do let us know if it goes well! Thank you so much!

    Just a suggestion: use a hot-glue gun to attach a piece of pressure treated wood to the bottom of the water tray - giving a solid base for drilling.
    Before filling with water, some pieces for drilling can be hot-glued to the wood, making drilling easier.

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you could attach a piece of wood to a dish - I would not recommend glueing the sea glass to anything if you are looking to use it afterwards. We share the way we find it easy to drill, there are of course other options. Thanks so much!

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Julie, great to hear you are giving drilling a try 😃 I don’t use a branded drill - my main focus is that it is battery powered as I prefer not to be connected to the mains . Try to get a drill with at least 25.000rpm and around 7V or 12V if opting for a battery powered one. I typically use 1.4mm diamond tip drill bits, but I have smaller and larger ones. The size of the drill is dependent on your project I would say. Best of luck and remember to start with your least liked sea glass when starting out to drill 😊 see you Friday!!!

    How lovely ,I feel as if I've just had a walk along the beach..gentle video.... I went to Elie and collected 'rubies' pity you can't drill them. ~I am going to buy drill, what kind is it that you use.?..

      @scottishmudlarking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much, that's really lovely - if we can take you along to the beach with us, we're happy! :D
      You had better luck than we did with Elie, but we'll try again - always nice to have an excuse to pop over.
      I use two drills, both do the same job well, though one is far cheaper - I use a rechargeable battery powered Dremel and a non-name brand from Lidl. The main thing is that the drill has at least 7volts and that it can accept a "multi-chuck" - always drill at the highest speed (25000 rpm + ). If in doubt, a dremel is a safe bet, but make sure it has the correct voltage, they have lower voltage drills that aren't as good for glass drilling. Good luck! :D

You can cheap ones on eBay (don’t opt for the box of mixed drill bits with round heads etc!) or splurge out and get the Triple ripple ones from Kingsley ( that’s in the US!) ... try swapping the drill bits and make sure they are straight inside the multi Chuck. Where can I find a drill and what type of drill is a good one to purchase?

      Hi! We cover drill spec, drill bits and much more in this video - and we take drilling to a more advanced level with lots of tips along the way. Bottom line is, you can't go wrong with Dremel, but, there are more affordable drills that do the job just as well - the video explains the details.
      Thank you so much, best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

      I use a cordless Dremel - 12volt, 25,000rpm. I have used non-branded rotary tools that have worked just as well, so long as they are 12v and can go up to, or faster than, 25,000 rpm!
      Good luck! :D
