Siskel & Ebert - Dumb and Dumber

  • The first time I watched Dumb and Dumber, I could swear I was going to break my ribs from laughing so hard. Gene Siskel thought the movie was hilarious and gave the film a thumbs up. Roger Ebert thought the film was funny, but gave the film a thumbs down because he felt it was a very sloppy movie. I have to agree with Siskel on this one.

That's not what Ebert said. He said there were a few scenes (probably the snowball scene) that made him laugh, but overall it was a sloppy movie. Laughing at 2 or 3 scenes over the course of an hour and a half wasn't enough to carry the movie. My time could have been better spent doing something else like washing my car and reading.

@@michaelwainscott2633 Roger Ebert is my go-to when it comes to film criticism; I love his print reviews and I loved Siskel and Ebert. but Roger could be a tad snooty at times, and this is clearly one of those cases. He attended a comedy and admittedly laughed his ass off... Yes it’s juvenile but it doesn’t pretend it isn’t.

One gag that I never noticed until recently is when Harry is introduced to Mary's mother at the Owl event. Her mother holds out her hand for him to kiss it. He takes her hand, kinda looks at it, and does nothing because he's completely clueless of what to do. A worse movie would have probably completely focused on this bit but it's played so subtly, there's even dialogue over it, that it's absolutely perfect. Ebert is insane.

But can those compete with more smart/funny movies such as Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters, Dr. Strangelove, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, etc. as truly great comedies? I don't think so, but that's just an opinion.

Dumb and Dumber had a sharp script, directors with vision and Jeff Daniels killing it opposite the great comedian.
