It’s crazy how little they cared about spoilers back then. The whole drive of the plot is Lloyd getting to Mary and wanting to be with her and the review gives away that she’s not interested
That clip was shown on every talk show Jim Carrey went on to promote Dumb and Dumber. I don't know anyone who wasn't aware of that spoiler before seeing the movie.
Dumb and Dumber was the Farrelly brother first movie. They were totally inexperienced and novices at making movies at the time. This is probably the reason the movie may seem sloppy.
I don't care about this movie, but FFS, if someone makes a comedy, and you laugh harder than you've laughed in years, give the damn thing a positive review.
It was one scene, out of 100 min movie So, by your logic, in a horror movie, if I jumped up and screamed at a scary spot and nothing else the rest of the movie, I should say that Horror movie was Great and Scary ?
Dumb and Dumber is one of a small number of movies that has had me sliding out of the chair, gasping for breath, multiple times. (Others include: A Fish Called Wanda, Skin Deep (Blake Edwards’), Borat, Bowfinger, Tucker & Dale vs Evil, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.)
I just noticed the most annoying sound scene is different than the theatrical! You don't see Jeff Daniels scream with it. I wonder if this is from a workprint copy for early review
I would love to know which scene It was that almost hospitalized Roger. I'm inclined to believe it's the scene with the bird's head "falling off" because that scene had me falling out of my chair the first time I saw it. But since he wouldn't say which scene it was I'm guessing it was the one with Jeff Daniels taking a crap, LOL
I wouldn't word it exactly like that, but Ebert was more fair to low brow films, often giving kinder reviews to crap movies because he recognized that it is what the audience wanted (his review of Final Destination 5 is a work of art).
I would love to know which scene Roger said was the funniest moment in comedy he’d ever seen. I’d like to think it’s Hairy getting his tongue stuck on the chair lift.
It was the scene with the little boy and the parakeet. For me it was the snowball ball, I was almost ready to give up on the movie…until that happened. And then I couldn’t stop laughing.
Dumb and Dumber, Tommy Boy, and Spider-Man are hands down the most quotable films ive ever seen. I can see a still image from a scene and immediately quotw it.
Now looking back. It was just a rip off of Beavis And Butt-Head. They both have the same concept. Butt-Head is Dumb and Beavis is Dumber. The prequel when they were teens just make it more obvious.
Dumb and Dumber was made by two great filmmakers, who were trying to actually create a special experience. The movie had more going on than Carrey and Carrey is no slouch. I mean, he's a rare performer who can actually turn a mediocre movie above into something special. Dumb and Dumber had a sharp script, directors with vision and Jeff Daniels killing it opposite the great comedian.
This is one of the rare times I side with Gene over Roger. The crazy thing I remember in one of their arguments in another episode, Roger says a comedy is good if it makes you laugh. Here he admits laughing all the time yes can't give it a thumbs up! It's like when Harry and Lloyd told the bikini models to look for oil boys in the next town.
I liked how it was clear that Daniels was "Dumb" and Carrey was "Dumber". Like in the newspaper article scene where one could barely read, and the other read it with zero effort.
In this clip of the most annoying sound in the world you actually get to see Jeff Daniels break character and laugh but it doesn’t cut out straight away like it does in the released scene, this one you see his entire reaction, wish I could see it in better quality
When this movie was new , , , I loved the "ACE VENTURA" but when I went to see Dumb and Dumber ( at a former friend's suggestion ) 12 minutes into the Movie I walked out of the Theater , , , then talked to usher about how much I hate that movie after 12 wasted mins of it and he directed me to a better movie that was also starting ""Star Trek Generations"" my mind was soooo thankful for that 😮🎉🎉😂
No. In his print review he says it's the moment with the blind kid and the dead bird with its head duct-taped on. And then later the payoff when Mary is watching TV and she sees the news story about the kid who bought the dead bird, and says, "Who are these sick people?" just before Lloyd shows up.
He said that "he can't give this movie thumbs up" and didn't elaborate on how many he would actually give it... So you're telling me there's a chance it's not both thumbs down?
Now I'm picturing Ebert busting into the bathroom stall. And Siskel wilting down to the floor sucking his thumb. 'Find a happy place. find a happy place'.
Above average plots don't matter in comedies like they matter in dramas. The only thing that makes a comedy film great is if it makes you laugh and laugh often. The only other comedy that's ever made me laugh as much from start to finish as Dumb and dumber, is Dodgeball. It’s crazy how little they cared about spoilers back then. The whole drive of the plot is Lloyd getting to Mary and wanting to be with her and the review gives away that she’s not interested
??? that`s not really important to this film...
@@babybird871 No but if you watch other videos, they're very liberal with plot points and people today would lose their minds. Also, it was a joke
That clip was shown on every talk show Jim Carrey went on to promote Dumb and Dumber. I don't know anyone who wasn't aware of that spoiler before seeing the movie.
@@doughbafett I'M NOT COMPLAINING THAT IT WAS SPOILED! I'm merely commenting on how different our spoiler culture is compared to then
This is a great film this was originally a John Hughes screenplay but sold it to the Farrelly brothers
1:25 : I still use that quote to this day.
Dumb and Dumber was the Farrelly brother first movie. They were totally inexperienced and novices at making movies at the time. This is probably the reason the movie may seem sloppy.
2:15-2:37 If Roger Ebert reviewed the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.
“You know, on second thought, you might just wanna run a comb through ‘em.”
I don't care about this movie, but FFS, if someone makes a comedy, and you laugh harder than you've laughed in years, give the damn thing a positive review.
It was one scene, out of 100 min movie
So, by your logic, in a horror movie, if I jumped up and screamed at a scary spot and nothing else the rest of the movie, I should say that Horror movie was Great and Scary ?
"So you're telling me there's a chance," I still laugh when I hear this.
To me, Harry pelting a snowball point blank into Marys face would be the funniest part of the movie
I saw this movie in a super cheap theatre for 1 dollar and I couldn't stop laughing at Jeff Daniels taking a crap! Best dollar spent ever!
The bathroom scene was the first one that came to mind. I was dying.
One of the funniest movies ever made, easily. Siskel is correct.
Why can't Roger Ebert just admit he loves the movie? It's like what Gene said, he heard him laughing.
Their reviews are opposite what I would have expected. Ebert’s tastes were always more low brow than Siskel’s.
I wouldn't word it exactly like that, but Ebert was more fair to low brow films, often giving kinder reviews to crap movies because he recognized that it is what the audience wanted (his review of Final Destination 5 is a work of art).
Siskel LOVED the Farrelly Brothers, though. He had both Kingpin and There's Something About Mary in his top 10 for the year.
Years later, Ebert had a reappraisal of this film. Calling it very funny and wish he enjoyed it more when he first saw it in ‘94.
Is there footage of that? Because I was just thinking if he'd only watch it one more time, he'd change his rating.
They are talking to the late Charles Rocket in the second scene there.
The funniest scene I’ve seen in 5 years. It almost sent me to the hospital. Thumbs down
I would love to know which scene Roger said was the funniest moment in comedy he’d ever seen. I’d like to think it’s Hairy getting his tongue stuck on the chair lift.
its the toilet scene.. still makes me cry...lol
Don't understand why Ebert thumbed-down this movie when it's a comedy that made him laugh until his sides hurt.
Because maybe it wasn’t the greatest as a movie.
I want to know what scene almost hospitalized him
In later Farrelly movie reviews he reconsidered his review of this movie, and mentioned the "pretty bird" scene.
It was the scene with the little boy and the parakeet.
For me it was the snowball ball, I was almost ready to give up on the movie…until that happened. And then I couldn’t stop laughing.
Ahh 90s comedies. Will never see films made like this again
I felt the same way about the sequel. One laugh had me dying and the rest was a ghost town.
I'm more of a Planes Trains and Automobiles kind of person..plus isn't The Mask better than this
These sickle n Ebert videos are great. Its definitely like a time capsule. I dig it sucka
If I made a movie and the critic almost needed to be hospitalized due to laughter I'd take that review pretty well
Never thought it would be Ebert not liking it and Siskel recommending.
Sea Bass and the fellas offered to pick up our check. They said just put in on their tab... they're very nice :)
So Ebert laughs his ass off, but still gives thumbs down because he thinks too highly of himself to enjoy such vulgar humor.
Dumb and Dumber, Tommy Boy, and Spider-Man are hands down the most quotable films ive ever seen. I can see a still image from a scene and immediately quotw it.
One of the funniest movies I’ve seen.
Now looking back. It was just a rip off of Beavis And Butt-Head. They both have the same concept. Butt-Head is Dumb and Beavis is Dumber. The prequel when they were teens just make it more obvious.
At least, it was clear that Beavis And Butthead are meant to be beneath the audience ultimately.
Am I alone in thinking ace Ventura is some of Carey’s best work?
I wish to see the Ebert & Roeper review of When Harry Met Lloyd
"Tic Tac sir" after the cop drank the urine, hahaha
Lauren Holly wearing more lipstick than any 2 actresses I've ever seen
LMAO
In this clip of the most annoying sound in the world you actually get to see Jeff Daniels break character and laugh but it doesn’t cut out straight away like it does in the released scene, this one you see his entire reaction, wish I could see it in better quality
This movie's free to watch on here right now.
I thought the bathroom scene was the funniest part of the movie! Great comedy!
The scene between 0:11 and 0:25 looks like it was completely ad-libbed with genuine confusion on the part of the waitress.
I love how the review for “Dumb And Dumber” is followed by “Legends Of The Fall”...LOL...
When this movie was new , , , I loved the "ACE VENTURA" but when I went to see Dumb and Dumber ( at a former friend's suggestion ) 12 minutes into the Movie I walked out of the Theater , , , then talked to usher about how much I hate that movie after 12 wasted mins of it and he directed me to a better movie that was also starting ""Star Trek Generations"" my mind was soooo thankful for that 😮🎉🎉😂
the moment the Ebert was referring to: the Turbo Lax scene
Ebert used to be too damn critical of hilarious comedies because they didn't have a picture perfect plot. Yet, he said this film made laugh as much as he had during a comedy film in 5 years 🤦♂️
The stupidity of giving this movie a thumbs down proves you have no working knowledge of film and don't deserve any sort of income at all
This movie was dumb, it has good bits but it breaks down and you are being a bit unfair, he gave it thumbs down but he did have positive comments
These two saw way more movies and way more different kinds of movies than the average person sees in their whole lifetime.
These guys were dinosaurs at this point. It’s no wonder the didn’t “get it.” They’d never survive today, a time when we all can do exactly what they did.
I’ve loved Carrey since In Living Color.
