    Sorry to everyone if I mispronounced her name. I have only seen it in print. I was just trying to talk about the concept of non-linear dungeons and wanted to give her credit for the work she did. I sometimes forget that the tiniest mistake on the internet can be cause for a big uproar. My intent was never to upset anyone.

      As the only person who commented about the mispronunciation, I'm going to say that this is a disappointing and needlessly defensive response to a correction plainly stated, no uproar to it. A little "my mistake, my bad" would have been plenty.
      You caught more flak (barely any) from folks about the Jaquays/Alexander situation you touched on, because it's a sticking point for a lot of people who are fans of Jennell.

    Oh boy you might want to look into that whole “at her request thing…”

  • @ZeKiwiOfTheNorth
    @ZeKiwiOfTheNorth 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

    A note: Jennell's last name was Jaquays, with an S. As well, her request was simply that "Jaquaying" be changed to "Jaquaysing," and Justin Alexander chose to ignore that for a long time. It's been changed in spaces where he has editing controls to "Xandering" since he's put out his book.

    Even though other people already said it, I will emphasize that she did NOT request that the term be changed to "Xandering". What she did request is that people spell her name right- instead of "Jaquaying" the dungeon, she wanted it to be "Jaquaysing" the dungeon. The Alexandrian chose to try to steal credit for her design sensibilities instead.

      Again I apologize, but I would also suggest that the Alexandrian didn't "steal" anything. While she was a wonderful designer, she didn't invent multiple entrances, loops, secret paths, etc. She made great maps, Justin Alexander broke down what she, and lots of other people, did in gave an outline so that other people could also make great dungeons. Nobody stole anything, nobody is suggesting that she doesn't do good work. Justin Alexander gave her a ton of credit for what she did, as I tried to do. I did it poorly, again I am sorry. I love her work as well as all the other stuff on the Alexandrian.

    You must have tapped my phone :) I was just saying that I need to get better at this myself. I am guilty of linear dungeon design and I was just telling a friend that I need to start doing a better job of giving my party decision points.

    Any fans of JRR Tolkien should appreciate the idea of a side door that leads directly to the dragon’s hoard.

    I agree with the various ideas brought forth, would like to add if you're a DM using a non-digital map, Map revealing and review on multiple levels can get cumbersome in playtime of the game. Flip side is most physical maps can be destroyed with a touch of fire. LOL.....
    I'd like to add a bit on environment. It is an important key in writing and challenging high-level characters. Environment can include a lot of conditions which make it tougher to operate. Examples could be, Magic Dead Zone, a high lvl of Magnetism, An Aura or combination of Auras in a particular area with effects like Protection from Good/Evil, Curse/Bless so on, Sound Manipulation in either direction, Blinding I prefer natural like the polar ice but lots of ideas work here like Darkness too, Gravity works nicely if you're a bit of a traveler, let's not forget Airless but high altitude or dusty also, and of course Water any form will do. Putting 2-3 of these conditions together can make it so that they are in more danger should they be reckless.
    I say this with experienced players in mind, mix up the pitches, show them things they have never seen before. High Level experienced players need the unknown to facilitate the same feelings they had when they were low level.
    Just my 2cp

    The dungeon crawl game "Four Against Darkness" is the most excellent way of tackling non linear dungeons.

      Jenelle Jaquays died recently. For years she had asked that the term for this use the correct spelling of her last name. Justin Alexander instead started calling it Xandering instead of Jaquaysing on his site and in the book he just published.

      @hackthedungeon  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The research I did showed that Justin Alexander originally coined the term. As such, I suppose he is within his rights to change it. He gave her a lot of credit for how she designed dungeons, and his terminology was more associated with his breakdown of the different principles.

    People should really read what Justin says about the whole thing. There's still a lot of ignorance and blame and oh wait. It's the internet. Never mind. Carry on. Silly me! Good video.

    Maybe you should do a little bit more research because as far as I know all she asks for was for her name to be spelled correctly not for her name to be taken away from something that she had created

    • @hackthedungeon
      @hackthedungeon  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As far as I can tell, Justin Alexander "coined" the term. He gave her a ton of credit for the great work she did. I am sorry if I offend you, that wasn't my intent. I was simply trying to make a video about the concepts of non-liner dungeon design and tried to give credit to a couple people that have influenced that concept.

    That "at her request" business had me stop the video. Do better, that's an outright falsehood and incredibly disrespectful

    • @hackthedungeon
      @hackthedungeon  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did she not request it? Who requested it? What was false about what I said. I would say I am sorry that you didn't like the video, but you didn't get very far.

      @ZeKiwiOfTheNorth 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Dude, come on.. "originally it was named for her, but at her request the name was changed to Xandering"
      Yes, she did request **a** change - from Jaquaying to Jaquaysing. She wanted to be *properly* credited. Justin Alexander wrote a deceptively ambiguous explanation for the name change after Jennell passed, making it sound like she gave her blessing for it to be changed to Xandering, and you're passing that along here.
