- In this video we're going to be looking at a 1Up Street Fighter Arcade Cabinet. It was advertised on eBay as being faulty, and was being sold as spares or repair. Let's see if we can diagnose the problem, repair it, and then upgrade it into something awesome!
I'm not an expert, but I do enjoy trying to fix things.

You didn't show it so you might not know, but you should set up a safe shutdown script for the raspberry pi so that when you power off the system the raspberry pi will shutdown safely before the power shuts down completely. If you just cut power to the pi you will corrupt your microsd eventually and have to rebuild everything (and lose your saves/roms/etc)
Good idea 👍There is an option in emulation station at the main menu to shutdown the system, although I can't see the kids going to the trouble of backing out of the game, going back to the main menu and selecting that each time.

A guy buys a junked arcade machine that only plays 3 games and then turns it into a masterpiece that plays thousands of games. Love this.
That little TV board looks like it would come in handy. I have a bunch of broken TVs but sadly none of them connect like the LCD on this cabinet. I do have an old LCD computer monitor though.

Someone else has probably mentioned this but tolerances are tight inside speakers. A spill of a sugary drink and it can be expected to stick together, preventing proper operation.

I cant believe they charge over $1000 here in Australia for these machines. They are built so cheap. I did the same thing as.this guy but I used a genuine lowboy arcade cabinet as they built solid and are full size.
Nice 👍I used to have a full size cabinet, but sold it about 6 years ago. I used to work repairing and rebuilding arcade machines back in the late 80s and 90s. Still got a box full of JAMMA boards somewhere and even an original taito space invaders part ii board🙂
Was nice seeing this not just diagnosed but upgraded. I remember Bubble Bobble it was one of my favorite games to play as a youngster many hours put into that game. Maybe your friend will want to buy it off of you if he likes all the old games. Was nice to see your cat too.

2 changes I would have made. 1) A linear Power supply, and 2) (for sure), move ALL of the SD Card to an USB connected & boot-able HDD or SSD drive.
That way, you won't be coursed by an SD Card dying on you. Why take a chance. You got a real deal when add the price up, compare to buying a new machine!!

Nice work! You did what I did a few years ago - but I got an old busted arcade cabinet, gave it a fresh lick of paint, ripped out the old guts and replaced it with a modern PC and LCD, and loaded debian linux onto it, set up mame then closed it up. The longest part was downloading the romsets to the cabinet. Since it had wifi I just left it running with a throttled torrent client so the whole internet would slow to a crawl and left it on for a few days.
Nice. I've brought back memories as I used to repair and convert cabinets to Jamma back in the late 80s and 90s. I've got a box full of old arcade boards somewhere....
One day I'm going to have an arcade box like this. I'm always watching reviews of the Pandora boxes it's my hope to one day have a machine that can replicate every arcade game I played In my youth and teen years.
You could always just get a raspberry pi, put the stuff on an sd card, plug it into your TV with a couple of USB snes pads. That's what I was using the raspberry Pi for previously before the cabinet came up 👍
@@BuyitFixit Yeah the Pi is very good at emulation I do have memories of playing Super Street fighter 2 with Q sound though and being completely amazed at the complete surround sound effect.
I mean as far as emulation goes there's a million ways to play old games but I think I want A cabinet that does that Q sound thing.

@@BuyitFixit I've a feeling the cabinet I played on was a top of the range thing. But my memory is Q sound was amazing it blocked out really the rest of the arcade and it sounded like a hell of a lot of speakers were actually behind me (impossible).
Not even 7.1 actual setups come close to my memory of this one machine, but yeah it was a capcom thing that seems to have died now and I doubt many games support it.
@@teknikal6969Qsound was used on quite a few arcade games by Capcom. Its an algorithm that models the human head to create surround sound via stereo speakers. A lot of modern tvs, pc sound cards and av amps have similar modes. I liked rolands implementation (soundspace i think), it threw sounds behind and above you which q sound doesn't quite manage convincingly iirc.
Ecco the dolphin on Sega`s megacd used qsound for its music and it really does sound amazing, its worth tracking down the soundtrack to it and the sequel if you like qsound. It sounds like you could pluck individual sounds out of the air in front of you in places, very impressive and as you say even a 7.1 setup cant really position sounds so precisely in 3d space. Fantastic music as well.
I think most modern emulators could reproduce qsound or an approximation of it as it was purely software driven.
Soon as i saw this i couldnt wait to watch it, i knew an upgrade would be in order :D

Yes, it was one of the reasons why I bid on this one, although it wouldn't take much more to get a piece of wood and a hole cutter and make your own panel for any of them. Turtles might be another option especially if you wanted a 4 player.

Sorry, It was just a couple of old ferrite choke filters from a TV power supply (I soldered two together) and then added a capacitor on the output of them just in case. The capacitor was just one I pulled of an old board I think something like 1000uf 25v. It was literally thrown together from a parts I had lying around on some scrap boards 😂
OK now I want one, I don't have the space but do I really need a bed, is sleep that important??? 🤣🤣

Thanks 👍. The inductors block and unwanted AC on the power (you used to get a similar thing for radio's on old cars when you used to get interference from the spark plugs through the speakers) The capacitor then smooths out the any remaining spikes (it may not have been needed but I added one anyway). I've actually been repairing a sound bar which has a similar filter, and I show the waveform on the scope of the signal before and after the filter (next video out the weekend).
The pins on the IC are apparently active low (i.e. when the pins are at 0 V or GND level the chip detects a key press). Since those inputs are quite sensitive, they might register a key press if the pin was simply open circuit. Therefore you use a resistor to keep that pin high (5 V or 3.3 V depending on the chip) unless a button is pressed. You can't connect the pin straight to 5 V because then pressing a button would cause a short. That's a pull-up resistor. A pull-down resistor is the same but connected to ground instead of VCC.
These boards are actually missing a sound channel I think it's the left one, it's best to join 2 points on the board and you get all sounds through one obviously modding it is the best solution 😁
Yes I did read a post that the game was missing some sound effects due to them only having a mono amplifier and one speaker. Thanks for commenting 👍

I know it's a cliché but it's amazing how technology has advanced - these old games used to take up a 16" square board each and now you can have hundreds, even thousands on an sd card the size of your little fingernail and a £25 3x4 inch board can run them without breaking a sweat.
Yes totally 👍It used to be my job back in the late 80's and 90's repairing and rebuilding arcade machines. I used to convert the old cabinets to JAMMA. I've still got a box full of old boards. One is a Taito Space Invaders PT2 board 🙂

I also love tinkering myself. I'm not an electronics guy though, but I am a pro tinkerer when it comes to computers (including embedded stuff).
I wonder what's the deal with sanding off those chip IDs ? There isn't really anything special about that mainboard, it's a rather basic single-board computer. My guess is maybe the game licensors demanded it to "prevent bootlegging" ?

Many years ago, I took the electronics from a keyboard and wired it to a game pad, to make a usb controller. This looks a bit simpler!
Yes, it's pretty much plug and play👍. I did have a couple of USB game pads, and I did consider butchering them to do similar as what you did, but this was much easier 😂

So the OE fix would have been a bit of wire, some buttons and a speaker? I SO love your way of doing it though. Have a couple of Rasp Pies here so might even look at it myself. I was never "in" to arcade games though, still have a Wi here somewhere and did dabble with Speccy plus etc, longer ago than I choose to remember,

A lot of the public used games, the controlls were glued on so they can't be stollen. Like every thing else, some people just have to mess things up.

Those 1up machines used a screw-on ball for the joysticks and it would always loosen up from the slightest amount of play. So I wouldn't be surprised if the previous owner ultimately glued it on or at least used Thread Lock.

Mick absolutely brilliant it looks fantastic your mod is better then the original, I have a few small led TVs 19-24” that can be used for your microscope etc, shame I didn’t know you were coming over this way, I’m only in South Shields,I have a Nintendo switch light that needs the daughter board socket taking off and the new one putting back on, my eyes are too bad for doing it, not sure if it’s something you can do

Thanks, yes I did this on my own. I listed most of the stuff I used in the video description if you want to have a go at building one. Alternatively you could just buy the joysticks and buttons and hook them up to a laptop and run MAME on the laptop or PC.

Holy damn those traces and unnecessarily small... you NEVER push the design limits unless you have to. I've done my fair share of electronics design and more important than knowing resistor color codes is to understand the physical limitations of the real world and manufacturing processes so your products come out clean.

The speaker was likely damaged by a drink spill that corroded and seized the voice coil then overloaded the audio output driver. Whenever I find something where all the controls are going crazy I check the switch lines to make sure they change state when pressed. This finds missing pullups or stuck switches.
Thanks for that. When I was watching the video back I was thinking about that mystery component. I think it must be for the power switch, and probably a mosfet. There's a small transistor near it which is probably switched by the power switch at the front panel (that's what I suspect anyway) which then switches that mosfet to power on the board.

I mainly just do stuff for myself, but I also volunteer once a month at our local repair cafe, where we attempt to repair things for people in the community free of charge (unless parts are required). Perhaps there is one near you as they are all over the country.

I guessed right i think. I saw the dodgy controls and said to myself thats a bad ground somewhere. I was a bit lost with the pull up resistors (still learning) but I think thats what it is with the damaged via. Am i right?
Yes, the pullup resistors keep the input lines at logic high level, so when you ground then via the buttons or joystick there is a change from a 1 to a 0. If they are not pulled up, they have 0 volts already so the machine thinks you are pressing them all.
Another great repair / upgrade. Am i right in saying you didn't use the original board and all the games was on that raspberry pi?
Yes, that's right. I just wanted to see if I could find the fault on the original board first.

Hi. Fantastic bit of renovation! Out of interest, you mentioned when looking for that slightly dodgy transistor that you checked on some SMD databases to try and identify it. Could you share any sites I could try? I'm currently a bit stuck on a repair of an air fryer. I have found a burnt out chip but only have a few visible ID numbers. Google has turned up nothing though I think it's some sort of MOSFET with PWM control. Any help would be great! Thanks for all the great content. Al.

What may have happened: someone spilled soda over the inputs, it shorted the speaker with some of the inputs, the high voltage spikes from the speaker fried things in the main board.

Epic. Well done on finding the track / via break. Considering the abuse these things get (and the drinks they consume), issues are very probable. All your cables will fall out eventually, but that's part of the fun. Of course, you really need a real coin slot which takes sixpences, but beggars can't be choosers.
I used to have a load of coinslots but had a clear out a few years back. I used to work repairing such things back in the late 80s and 90s. I've still got a box full of old arcade boards somewhere including an original taito space invaders Part II board.

Thanks, no not really, they take a fair amount of time. I guess you haven't seen the video I did on the solar inverter where after I repaired it, I needed a service password? I emailed the company who said it was obsolete and bin it, so I thought instead I would reverse engineering their software and I wrote my own password generator to help others in the same predicament. The RGB laser I repaired was also another interesting one, along with the medical ultrasound scanner which after unlocking tons of hidden features I ran Doom on it 😂😂😂

well.. just looking at the board, this is more than likely a chinesium clone board. You can usuall spot these because they have a very bad habbit of lazering off IC identifiers, and using "clone" IC's that literally have no markings on them at all.
That's being the case, the odds of that marking on the Q9 transistor being acurate to any specific device is probably going to slim to none (that marking looks suspect af)
However, because of the "Q9" silkscreen on the PCB, and judging by the resistor between the bottom two pins on the device tells me it's going to most likely be a transistor (base emitter pins often have a resistor between them to keep from having a floating base)
Reasonably, we can assume it's going to be a transistor, so all we need to figure out is what exactly are we switching, and how fast do we need to do it, and what voltages are we talking about. Once you figure those out, you can easily find a suitable replacement with a wide enough tolerance to get you in the ballpark.
As for the short, you should really track down where that happened, and adress it there, simply bodging a wire may leave the short in place, causing other issues down the road.

How many firmware versions did you flash before you got it to work right? Those LVDS boards are great but can be a pain finding a firmware that works for a specific panel even though the various firmware files list the panel specs in the name as they are often still incompatible!
It was the first one that I flashed worked surprisingly. The only issue I had was getting it to start flashing in the first place, but changing the filename sorted that out🙂
I have never had issues with the file names myself but have used lvds driver boards for a few laptop screens and had one that worked after a couple of firmwares but the other two where I used a universal board were a nightmare to get working, glad yours went smoothly!
The last screen I did, I decided to spend a tiny bit more (only £4 more) and bought a board that was flashed with firmware for the exact panel I had and was a painless experience, the board technically can be flashed with other firmware but none are supplied and it's not like those univesal boards, this is a totally different board and form factor, runs way cooler than the universal ones as well, the cpu on the universal ones gets very very hot and you might want to put a heatsink on it, that's what I did in those boards due to how hot it gets!

I've just had another look at the board, if you mean the capacitor that's just under the resistor bank at 20:30 it's not a crack, its flux residue. I just double checked to be sure. It's just the light from the microscope casts shadows depending on the angle. Unless you mean a different capacitor that I may have overlooked?
can you please put a diagram of the amp filter
it's two inductors which have 4 wires on each. They are just wired to each other so the power goes in and out of the first one, and then in and out of the second one. This blocks any AC signals. Then I just added a capacitor on the output just to smooth it a bit.
