    I've never considered The Weeknd or Abel to be the same person, I think a lot of how Abel approaches art is through story and character, the dude is a self confessed cinephile. So much is concept based, obviously bringing himself into it as any artist does but there is definitely a separation there. I think this is why Echoes of Silence is probably my favourite of the trilogy because its miserable and dark, it's like a party thats been going on for way too long and its disgusting and sad now. I like how challenging it is, to portray a completely gross and deeply flawed character is so interesting. To what you said about him playing the victim at the end, I think that's exactly what an asshole like this would do and I think there's self awareness there in ending the story like that. This is only my dumb, made up take in my head anyway, I don't know anything about Abel for sure but I like my headcanon 😆

    • @pathreacts
      @pathreacts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      didnt even consider it was a character until i saw yours & a few others’ comments about it! very interesting perspective and i think it changes the story in my mind a bit. i love your comparison to the party going on for too long, absolutely the feeling i get from EOS!
      i love a flawed character but for this story specifically i dont think he built up the personal conflict enough, so i dont feel so much for him. i mostly feel pain for those around him :( the girls, his mother he mentioned…

      @@pathreacts I almost look at the weeknd character like a Scorsese film, like raging bull or something where a self destructive person self destructs for 2 hours.
      That’s always why I find it odd when people say they relate to this era of the weeknd, like when people think they’re just like Jordan Belfort after watching wolf of Wall Street even though the film just showed what greed does to people.
      I agree, I don’t feel bad for him either, just the people around him and he gives some teeny tiny looks into why he’s like this but he’s said before that he doesn’t like to give away everything with the stories and concepts he makes, he seems to be a big fan of subtext and people interpreting it for themselves, whether that’s who the weeknd as a character is or the story of after hours/dawn fm.
      I don’t know if anything I wrote makes any sense 🙈

      @@pathreacts I don't think he's trying to garner sympathy just laying out this world in a very dark light. at the time there was only fun music surrounding drugs and women, he was one of the first to portray it as rightfully dark.

    • @iamFSRL
      @iamFSRL หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@pathreactsto your point, he’s not supposed to be a complex character. He’s only 21 at this point, he’s a simple man who’s governed by sex and drugs and money, but self-aware enough to know it’s not a good thing because deep down he feels it isn’t, yet he drowns his sorrows in the sex, drugs and money.

  • @zeep55
    @zeep55 2 ปีที่แล้ว +87

    your reaction is valid. EOS definitely requires you to be in a certain mood, and I totally understand that you were put off with a lot of content on the album. I've always looked at this tape as the come down of everything. The tracks are much slower, he's finally getting the taste of his own medicine after all of his wrongdoing and the girl finally leaving. You can also totally see that throughout the course of all 3 mixtapes, all of the relationship that he's had with someone up to that point has always been so empty due to his recklessness and habits. It reflects on how futile their situation as a couple without all the substances and the lack of actual companionship, their inability to love one another when they're sober is deafening. Hence, Echoes of Silence :)
    I'll say I like all of his work except for Starboy, but even that album I still highly enjoy listening to it.
    Still hoping for KKB reaction tho maybe in near future 👀

    What I love about Trilogy is the story that Abel crafts - and I really feel like it shines the most here in Echoes Of Silence, where we see the depths of Abel's depravity, continuing to hurt more and more people on a downward spiral. But eventually, all he's left with is Echoes of Silence, the nothingness that all of this brought him, over and over. It's sort of like his Greek Tragedy, and I think where his storytelling kinda falls short here... it really shines in what he's bringing to After Hours and Dawn FM (and the third part of the new trilogy he's been teasing) because the story there is very similar but much more complex

    • @pathreacts
      @pathreacts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      good to keep in mind 😅

  • @gonzalogallego9265
    @gonzalogallego9265 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    Yeah, I think Echoes of Silence is just the consequences of his actions. Maybe the narrative isn't as concise as the other mixtapes (specially Thursday), but I think he was trying to show how fucked up it had to end if he continued that path.
    He was finally getting some fame and recognition, but he started to get really paranoid with women, believing they would only get with him because of his potential, because he's next in the big leagues (that's why D.D, Montreal, Same Old Song and Next all talk about the same thing). But this fame also gave him a lot of power over them, so he started abusing it.
    He used to beg for affection like in Wicked Games, but now, even if they tell him they love him, they're probably lying, so they have to prove it to him. And that's when they have to pass a test, to get to the bottom of the pit with him and show their loyalty.
    But that isn't enough, because it's never been about love, it's just a way of making him feel better about himself. He doesn't believe he's worthy of love, so the only way is to feel control and power over them (Outside, XO/The Host and Initiation show that).
    In The Fall he recognizes that his lifestyle is breaking him, but he just can't stop, and he wants to feel the peak (compensating, as always). He even says that he's been forced to make records, because of his gifted voice and his homelessness, he didn't have much of a choice.
    And finally, in Echoes of Silence, he explains the dynamic between him and a woman, representative of all his relationships. They both know how it's gonna end, but he needs to feel that power over her, and she likes the thrill of being with someone like him, and even if she begs him to stay and he feels lonely, he'll never stay, because he doesn't know love.
    A lot of this is subtext and speculation, and if you have to do this much digging to find the meaning then it's probably ok to criticize the lyrics. But of course you have to take into account the setup of the previous mixtapes to know where he's coming from and why he's acting that way. And it's ok if you didn't like it that much, at the end of the day art is really subjective, and if we have different experiences with it then it's doing what it's made for. Keep up the good work.

    Abel in a lot of ways paints the character in the music he makes as a very unlikable person, but still wants you to feel for them, which is very hypocritical, but i think that is the part i like the most, since that makes him very human, albeit very disgusting, but i still feel pitty for him, kinda like a weird feeling of despair that you feel for the villain, like "why did it have to end up this way?" You know.

    • @pathreacts
      @pathreacts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It's interesting that Path chooses to adjudicate, as if literal, the moral framework/ethical decision making process of a character, in an otherwise theoretical situation, where there's no real consequences, good or bad. I've always perceived Abel to be, functionally, a different character from the Weeknd; allowing Abel to project his vices/demons/tendencies towards unscrupulous behavior onto a self- concocted alter-ego, of sorts (The Weeknd), and in doing so, play with them, in hypothetical thought experiments, unbounded by what he perceives as a judgemental, stifling norms-based-rules order, without Abel being drawn in too-deep, and engaging in behaviors that he regrets, in the real world. Concisely, in this way, Abel uses the Weeknd as an exploratory mechanism to express, plainly, his own, raw, unfiltered, unadulterated emotions , and to test the limits of his own ethics w/out perceived repercussions for potentially reprehensible behaviors.

    I politely disagree that the production doesn't fit him. His content can come from a pretty dark place so I think most fans feel that the trilogy was the best representation of him back then. I also don't think he wants any pity he's just telling his story but through a character. "don't you leave my little life" was the girl replying btw not him just him singing from her perspective. also the "ive been good since thursday" means sober since thursday the day of the week. it's pretty sarcastic in tone I feel. he's basically saying he can only stay sober for very short periods of time even if it hurts people around him.

    As a The Weeknd fan I understand why his first projects are not enjoyable for too many people, its very dark and even some of the sounds are kinda uncomfortable and also the lyrics are not even relatable for the average person lol but I would highly recommed Frank Ocean, I think he's way more relatable and his two projects are my favorites, however Blonde is more experimental, so Channel Orange would be the best option to start with him. Keep it up, I was really wanting for this reaction :D
    Also I think Abel is playing a lot of the times the victim or not having a lot of empathy for the people around him because he's 21 and he's going to be very immature, it doesn't justify his actions but I get why he's like that

    Lol definitely not unsubbing, I appreciate your opinion and perspective! I can see why you can't get behind this music, your reasons are valid. I think a main attraction to his trilogy mixtapes are just the appreciation of his honesty. Like yeah, when you break down what he's saying it's pretty f****d up the way he goes about his relationships with women.. but the fact that he doesn't have shame in telling you how it is even though it doesn't make him look like a good person, I find kinda fascinating lol. A lot of the storytelling is repetitive like you said, and I don't know if I was intentional.. but not only was he 20/21 making these songs, he never left city or the 4 walls he was in up to this point in life. @RedicleOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@pathreacts im not quite sure what you mean by that. i think house of balloons is definitely the best of the 3, but i’m not sure “holding back” is the reason why? the mixtapes weren’t really intended to be the same. they’re all unique with intentionally different qualities. they just live in the same world. thursday’s world building / story line is by far the best. echoes is intentionally the darkest and most graphic, while also being the most lyrically intense. when he dropped echoes the world was asking if he could still be the weeknd but do anything outside the boxes he set in HOB & thursday, which imo he delivered. they’re just all different and echoes definitely took the longest to grow on me with some lows like same old song & outside. but damn, montreal shows a really raw and vulnerable side. xo / the host is so descriptive and dark and makes you really empathize with the woman for the first time. initiation flips that on its head and is one of the most genius songs he’s made to date (pitch changes representing the highs and lows of drugs). he’s not supposed to be a good person here but he doesn’t know how to repent in the fall, he lives with his sins. where a listener is supposed to empathize w him as a victim isn’t in his relationships with women, but being able to see him as a victim to his own vices and addictions. it’s a really mature perspective for a 21 year old to try to tell, hiding it in all of the immature lines. everything through this trilogy comes with a double meaning at least

    other ppl are commenting abt the weeknd just being a character and that is very much true. the weeknd is a character based on Abels life. idk if u know much abt his backstory but in Abel’s real life he struggled with loneliness/depression/suicide and drug use in his adolescence. Abel uses this and characterizes himself as, the weeknd, someone who didn’t care enough abt his life to focus on how destructive his actions were to himself and others (hence the heavy drug use and mistreatment of ppl). this is the character flaw that is most present in the weeknd, the character, during trilogy. he knew he had these issues, and wanted to get better, but he was in purgatory and stuck in his toxic ways. I don’t believe Abel necessarily did the same exact things to ppl as the weeknd does in trilogy, but he did share the same emotions/feelings if that makes sense. i think certain things were exaggerated for effect. for example, in initiation, the weeknd talks abt meeting his “boys” and those are actually his drugs (which i think u picked up on). he wants someone to prove to him that they love him for who he is, a depressed drug addict. and the weeknd knows this is not a trait ppl love in others so his test is setting the other person up to fail, which in turn, causes more loneliness and depressive/dark thoughts. i think this is an example of a dramatized feeling that Abel had, but he never did that exact specific thing. he felt like he was so undeserving of love that nobody was capable of actually loving him. and Abel felt like he was undeserving of love bc he had a low view of himself at the time (like most depressed ppl). i think that is why Abel makes the weeknd such a devilish character, (hence all the voice alterations). Abel wants the character to be just as unlovable as he felt like he was in real life.
    the weeknds story in trilogy is just a slightly more extreme, exaggerated representation of his feelings/emotions. i also think that is why we hear a lot of experimental sounds, especially in his early days, bc Abel was literally experimenting with ways on how to cope with his depression. that is how i look at it and it makes sense to me at least. im telling u all this to i guess point out Abel is not this shitty of a person in real life 😂 but also to see if my viewpoint helps u make sense of his dark/toxic lyrics in this mixtape.
    with all this being said i respect ur opinion and am thrilled u decided to share ur listening experiences with us (i actually subscribed after watching this video)! i felt bad u felt like u had to apologize for ur opinion and as a huge weeknd fan, i appreciate u giving it a shot even tho u didnt like it. there are reaction videos out there that fake like they love certain things but i hope ppl see how a genuine reaction is so much more worthwhile. i cant wait for more of ur content (tyler the creator and the weeknd are my 2 favorite artists so im especially looking forward to those)!

    • @pathreacts
      @pathreacts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you so much for the thoughts, i agree with you absolutely! i really wish he fleshed out the ideas a liiiiittle bit more, because ultimately i felt nothing remotely positive for this character :(
      i especially love how you mentioned he was setting them both up to fail. so heartbreaking, but i dont feel like that was clear enough and wish he balanced it more like he did in HOB. someone else mentioned EOS is like the "bad ending" of a video game and i think that's so accurate

    • @Joey-dt2tz
      @Joey-dt2tz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes i agree the storytelling lacked more on EOS than on the first two. and bc of this, i think the reasoning of why he is like this can get lost. i had to listen many times to come to the conclusion abt EOS that im at now. the only thing that was very much clear to me from the first listen was that someone so destructive was only ever going to have a bad/tragic ending. im not sure if it was intentional or not but the thought process of someone who is depressed can sometimes be incoherent and confusing so maybe it was for a reason? regardless the weeknd is meant to start off a bad person w many toxic traits.
      kiss land builds off of this. Abel said its meant to be a horror movie and takes place w him on tour around the world. there is some character growth at the end with tears in the rain and its one of my favorite songs from him. i feel like i already said too much and i dont want to spoil ur experience but i think u will like kiss land more bc the story is more coherent than EOS and the production is amazing

    I promise i won't unfollow glad you reacted at all! I understand not liking this project as much as the others since The Weeknd was a total douchebag through most of it. I didn't like this album as much either when I first heard it cuz it felt weaker than HOB n Thursday HOWEVER it grew on me a lot. For almost all the tracks on here flow into each other flawlessly, and sonically it feels just as cohesive as the other mixtapes. The story did feel looser on this mixtape tho it didn't really tie everything together as well like HOB did. I still think echos of silence is a great mixtape full of very unique production, and haunting melodies at times. I still get chills everytime I listen to the title track, and XO/The Host as well as the track after Initiation. The things he be sayin lyrically, and the sounds just create a very uncomfortable image in one's mind. Although, something I've noticed with every Weeknd album (except for starboy) is that it always ends with him alone, or dying. Abel is aware that he's the villain of his own stories and no story is complete unless we see the Villains downfall. So, hope that helps you sleep better tonight LMAO

    • @pathreacts

    I think this is the strongest of the three Trilogy mixtapes but definitely the hardest to listen to. Very dark and disturbing subject matter that makes you feel no sympathy for the narrator. In fact, he probably even deserves all the pain and torment he feels, especially after all the severe manipulation that he subjected the woman to throughout XO/The Host and Initiation.

Each track is supposed to be a deeper dive into his way of life and how as you mentioned, it’s repetitive and he seeks empathy despite him knowing that he is a bad guy. I think you should listen to everything Abel has made, Kissland, Starboy aswell but dont you ever skip After Hours. That album is insane. Also if you wanna check out another artist, check out Travis Scott.

    Keep your expectations low for Kiss Land, definitely not my favorite Weeknd album, but fans do be hyping that album a lot. I would consider Kiss Land to be in my bottom 3 of Abel's work.
