  • This video shows the Top 20 countries with the highest number of trademarks (recognizable signs, designs, or expressions) from 1980 to 2017. East Asian (especially Japan, China, and South Korea) countries and the USA have been dominating since the start of the video. China really started to take over (the entire world) after 2010.

That is mind-blowing. It isn't even a contest anymore after 2010. The craziest part was in 2012 watching all the other countries except China turn red and shrink back as China rockets ahead. Then from 2015-2017 where it just randomly decides to double itself instantly.

In my opinion as a Japanese, Japan's competitiveness has declined due to new rules such as the Plaza Accord and the Semiconductor Accord (so-called Japan Bushing)and the bursting of the bubble economy.
Japanese companies have also moved their bases overseas , and have acquired or withdrawn technology overseas(mainy in neighboring countries such as China and Korea).
And perhaps the main reason is that the government has reduced investment in businesses.
Thank you for reading my long and poor English comment so far.

For thousands of years, China doesn’t have the concept of trademark and copy right. All invention and brand names are open source to share and governed by unwritten social rules not government laws. For example, you may find 10 restaurants on one street with the same name, and everybody knows which one is legit. The live and let live culture allows the copies to survive if they know their place and offer worthy value to consumers. This is also the pressure for the real one to keep up and improve. Once China realized these western protection laws and the lack of social governance, China caught up.
