Flosstube Extra: Decorative Pin Tutorial

  • This is a quick tutorial to show you how easy it is to make your own decorative pins for your cross stitch finishes.
    Supplies used:
    E6000 glue
    Beads with a fairly small hole
    Corsage/Boutonniere Pins (at least two inches long)
    I like the pins put out by Dritz that offer both white & Black heads. You can find them online or in a lot of the big box stores: bit.ly/41jbUbm
    I've also used this set of pins from Amazon, though the ball head is larger: amzn.to/3KvemVm

    I’ve also made a few similar counting/decorative pins with long pins and beads that I had. Yours are all very pretty and I especially like the watermelon slice. 😊

    Oh, I just love that crow finish. I just purchased that magazine last month to get that pattern and the nevermore. Love the frame idea too. I'll for sure have to hunt for that one this fall. 1 2 3 4

    Got lots of that E6000 and different beads already just need to get some of those corsage pins. I can remember my Grandma seemed to have lots of those type of pins and wore them in her hats. Of course, she is no longer with us. I have a feeling she would have had of lot of different ones to work with. Thanks once again Helen for showing us how to make these.

    Thanks Helen.. I've looked at the pretty pins that people show in their finishes and never thought about making my own. The glue tip is a great one. I've also used the Gorilla Glue with the brush.. and mine have done the same as yours. I went through three tubes before I decided it wasn't worth it, but I wasn't sure what else to use.

      I was disappointed that glue dried out so quickly, because it really was easier to use the little brush.

    You are such a good teacher. Thank you. This is likely a dumb question. How do you use counting pins? I assume to count stitches but not sure how it works! Do you count your stitches very much? I’m sure you have to be very careful that cats don’t get into your stuff! 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🌺

      Emmy is into everything!! I don't use them for counting, but I know some people put a pin in after 10 or 25 stitches if they're doing a long row.

      The watermelon beads came from JoAnn. I was there today and didn't see any sand dollars, but they may have some closer to summer.

      The watermelon beads are from JoAnn. Actually most of the beads I've found are from the strung bead section of either JoAnn or Michaels. 😊

    I have been wanting to make pins and so glad that you did a video. What size or length did you use for the pins? 2"?

      I would say a minimum of 2 inches. The pack with black and white are 2 inches. The Amazon ones are longer.

    Hi Helen. The pins I got are blunt so hard to get into cushion. Are yours pointed like a regular pin? Thanks for video.

      Yes, the ones I used are sharp. I've had blunt ones in the past too.
