you needed a new engine from the start but I don't blame you for putting on a band-aid. cheap find you have everything you need just get engine and you are good 2 go
I have an old Cub Cadet Tank that started smoking like that. Runs great, but because of its age, the hydraulic hoses get dry rotted and will split. One busted and was spraying hydraulic oil on my muffler. I replaced all four of the hoses, never another problem.
Heartbreaking, after all that hard work and effort. Hopefully it turns out to be a seal or something minor. You never know until you get into it. You'll still have a nice mower when you're done!
Based on the condition and how dirty it was it doesn't look like it was well taken care of previously. I'm willing to bet the rings and cylinders were worn and that's why it smoked from the start. Also that valve left a pretty good dent in the one piston, it may have moved material and deformed the piston making it not perfectly round anymore and it doesn't take much for it to push on the cylinder wall. That would have made it score the cylinder fast and eventually caused a ring failure resulting in the smoke.
Yes this is what I wanted to see, a man taking the time to clean up the equipment. Can you do something about the wheel. Dressing them to help the rubber.
The work you did on the engine looked to have been done correctly. Wonder what caused the failure. I hope the other head didn't drop a valve seat as well. Actually I hope it did. Because that's a less invasive repair than almost anything else. It starting to smoke only while under load, though, makes me think piston ring :(
That mower turned out great! Depending on how catastrophic the engine is try to find a known good used engine for it. Try to stay away from another kohler though they are ok if theyve been taken care of but always had the most issue when they came into the shop
I just restored a older Kubota Diesel Zero turn and I swear I blew my budget with all the new parts I put on it and painting areas to get it good as new.
the way it smoked and where it came from makes me think its drivetrain. like a belt or a clutch. didnt seem like the smoke came from the exhaust. either way, im ready to see what happened
I personally would avoid modern Kohler twin Engines and put in a Kawasaki because they are bullet proof Kohler dropped the ball around the mid 2000s. and from experience I despise Briggs Intek V twin engines no matter how well you take care of them they fail but The vanguard i hear is a great engine.
It's possible there could have been a blockage (rodent nest) under the engine cover causing cooling air not to circulate, overheat the engine and drop a valve seat. Hope its nothing major and is an inexpensive fix. Good luck and nice job.
you should have took a leaf blower or compressesed air to blow the whole mower off first because your pressure washing of the mower would be faster and more efficient and effective if you blow it of first before you pressure wash it.
Blowers work really well if you use them regularly, but once wet grass dries to paint you need a scraper. No different than under the deck, a blower does nothing. Power washer is the tool.
It’s possible. I had mower that started smoking bad. It was head gasket. If motor is shot. I’ve seen a video where I guy put a twin cylinder predator on his scag.
Just remove the deck stickers and buy new ones, if you can get them. Taping off the old looks third rate. You spent all that time and energy so do it right. Stickers are not that expensive.

Everything looks perfect other than the smoke. No matter what you got a fantastic deal for $400!
Thank you!
Throw a new 37 vanguard on there. Love the build!!
That would be so nice but those are expensive, trying to stay on a budget here 😅

True but I had to give it a try 😄
great job brother! you will get it sorted! waiting for the next video! the SCAGa continues!
What a cliffhanger!! Im ready for part 4 bro! I am rebuilding my John Deere 717a now too!
Will make sure to make a part 4 🫡 and good luck on your mower!
a quick tip of advice, when pressure washing don't let go of the handle rapidly, you smash up the unloader on your pump doing that
Nice paint job mate 👌
In Australia Scag is a slang term for junkies.
Thanks didn’t know 😄

Thank you! Yeah haven’t even looked into it yet but hoping for something easy.
When you get it running again, I wonder if the seat would clean up with some mold & mildew spray and a magic eraser? Great video series.

Thank you for the input, yeah I’m just looking for a whole replacement motor at this point.

The first grass deflector to ever be reinstalled on a commercial mower.
You done a great job on that mower! It looks great! Don’t know what happened but im sure you will fix it!
Great Video!
Thank you! 🙂
Sounds like it’s running off one cylinder. Need to check spark. Check valve adjustment. Even make sure the reed valves are good.
Good catch! I filmed the beginning of this video back when it was running on 1 cylinder but I have fixed the issue in part 2.

Yep that’s exactly how it is sometimes!
Nice job my friend
Thank you!
24:50 engine 💣💥
Thank you! It didn’t seize but it’s definitely blown now 😔
Awwww Mann u put in all that work for the engine to blow dammm at least when u get new engine you’ll have a new mower
Thank you! Yes for sure
Good job
Oh no! Hope you can fix it!
Did the rings out on the pistons?
You ever do a compression test after you reinstalled the new heads?

Even a new engine, you’re still in it low enough.
For sure!
in your first video, there was a very bent upper shock bracket on the upper right side in the back
Still firing on 1 cylinder? I must have missed a video.
It was running on both now but not for long 😔
Rebuild time! That sucks bro but at least it will be fun to watch the videos for us 😅
Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Why do you fix things with your flip flops on😊😊
There’s more to the story…let’s see what happened
Will make a video for sure!

Yeah there was a lot of debris and oil build up under the engine cover so I guess previous owner really over heated this engine before.
And Thank you!
Ironic, the very first thing that’s usually done with Scag mowers is remove the grass flap😂
True 😂 but I bolted mine tight so I can flip it up and it stays up!

Seems to have worked the way he did it.
For sure but all that debris was gummed up with oil and grease so it was pretty packed in there!
Coulda shouda whouda!!!

Came out really nice, aerosol cans have come a long way.
Good job, keep up the good work man
Thank you! Will do 🫡
Should of replaced those old pesky lifters
Blown engine, big repair, big money.
Yes oh well 🤷♂️
Waaay tooooo close with the rattle can guy. First coat was way too heavy.
Moral of this video. Never buy a scag mower.
😂
Head gasket maybe
I installed new headgasket unless it failed
It’s possible. I had mower that started smoking bad. It was head gasket. If motor is shot. I’ve seen a video where I guy put a twin cylinder predator on his scag.
should have 1) used a leaf blower first and 2) left the air cleaner/filter assembly in place.

A wash and a paint job isn’t a restoration. Why do you think it was $400.
Thank you for watching 🙂

Trust me I’m doing the same thing with an old Exmark Lazer Z. As soon as you think it’s fixed something else goes wrong.
Yeah it’s expected when trying to get a good deal and then it ends up costing more than just buying a good running one 🤪
Drove one just like that one great mower, only thing I didn’t like was that you sat so low every thing blew back on you.
That’s true!
Put a new Kohler engine on it.
Maybe that’s what I’ll have to do we’ll see 🤷♂️
@@Ace.Fisher Maybe a Briggs Vangard
