Hovering Lawn Mower [Restoration]

- This restoration is on a 1965 Toro Flymo 19 hovering lawn mower. It was patented in 1963 and you can see the exact patent here: patents.google.com/patent/US3...
I believe Toro only manufactured this in 1965 before selling the Flymo brand to Electrolux. The hovering action was especially useful for mowing ditches or golf greens.
A viewer sent me this lawn mower in 2017 and I am happy to finally get to it. Despite looking like it had been used quite a lot, this Flymo had remarkably clean engine internals. The engine still needed new gaskets as they were most likely contributing to a loss of lubrication, fuel, and compression.
I decided to only repaint the parts that were not aluminum or ones that would get hot. Personally, I dislike painting those types of parts.
The fiberglass base was the most difficult to restore and I did not get it back to 100% new. I first cleaned it with degreaser and then slowly used a razor blade to scrape off any damaged or discoloured fibres. I then gave it a clear coat of two-component fuel-resistant paint. There were some deeper stains, but it definitely looked much better. This is literally the first time I have had a tool with fiberglass parts.
I had all the digital art for the decals recreated by Jeff at formagraphicart@gmail.com. He has done a bunch of recreations for me and does a fantastic job. I then had the digital decals printed on vinyl at a local shop.
As for the function of this mower...it's amazing! I had way way too much fun cutting my lawn with this and I might just keep using this one from now on. The biggest downside is that you have to carry it to your lawn when it's not on, as it does not have wheels. Luckily, the whole unit weighs 25lbs, so it's relatively light.
I am surprised these are not more popular in North America, like they are in the U.K.

Well then.. Back in grade school there was a kid that used to tell all kinds of crazy stories including that his grandpa had a hovering lawn mower. I always just wrote it off as tall tale BS... 30 years later I stand corrected.

As a child I used to go to my grandfathers lake cottage every weekend. His neighbor had a mower just like this and it always was magical how he would mow his grass all the way down to the lake and push the mower out over the water and not have it sink. Excellent restore as usual and thanks for the memories.
The 90s things are better and stronger in structure because they are metal and original

Cool trick over water. I have a pair of 240V electric Flymos so I won't be going anywhere near water with them.
I had one of these back in the 80’s. One day half way thru mowing the yard, it got away from me and just flew away! Shortly after that all those damn crop circles started appearing everywhere.

Grandpa had one. Just like all our grandpa's, later in my teen years I had to use one at a golf course for steep bunker hills on my summer job. Great tool
I got a little nervous when you almost grabbed the edge of the mower deck with the engine running.
yeah mine has 3 safety's to stop the blade from turning.
I think he wanted to see how much air was being pushed past the edge of the skirt. it's a "hovercraft" after all.

@@timehunter9467 I've done that enough times I made a tool to rewind them. It's even worse when you get the spring almost wound back up and it explodes again.
My father had two of these, he dearly loved them because they could move in any direction especially side to side. I was never allowed to use them, because he figured I'd chop my feet off. I had to use the push mower only. It is so cool to see you found one and restored it. I remember because of the flat base and the way the handle moved he hung them on the wall of the garage and they took up almost no room.
I'm impressed at the good condition this was in!
The inventor of this lawn mower turned to my father and his company (MFI, Malmö Flygindustri AB) to turn his rather crude prototype into something productionwise more functional and appealing. I still have a few brand new cowlings made of glassfiber reinforced plastic in orange color!!!

@@Bruh-hq1hx Yes!! They are available both electric and with a Honda 4-stroke. My father had one electric in his older years. But I didn't like. I preferred the 2-stroke version. have never tried the 4-stroke one. Greetings from Sweden!

I couldn't agree more , I love his dedication to trying to get it back to factory condition . I , with no disrespect to him or a few other TH-cam people I watch that do restorations or machine work , often find myself late at night falling asleep watching his and others videos , I find them extremely relaxing. And I mean hey it works out for him and the others cause I have to watch the video 3+ times to ACTUALLY watch the who thing so they get 3+ views full views from me lol

British design, made under licence in USA. I owned an original UK one from approx. 1980 to 2000. Excellent, particularly on steep slopes where you walked it along just like a dog on a lead.
You can still get stuff that quality it is just expensive.

Well, that was just plain fascinating. I remember seeing something about the Flymo when I was a kid, but never got to look at one up close. I always wondered about two things... 1, how it could float on high-pressure air while still drawing grass up into the blade, and 2, how do you keep it level. Now that I’ve seen it operate, I’m still not sure... but by golly, it works. Thanks! This was fun.

The blade is only a couple inches from the ground so the grass has nowhere to go but into the blade at whatever height the blade is set to. its really no different than a regular mower. Just way more dangerous and way cooler lol i wonder if its easier to push?
@@ganjalfcreamcorn8438 I use one of these, you can push them with a thumb and forefinger. They really do glide like a hovercraft, you can actually have them float over a pool too.
As a miniature painter constantly searching for techniques on how to improve his weathering, this is almost the reverse of what I usually watch. That was some beautiful rusted yellow! You done ruined it!

My grandmother had a flymo 19 believe they are from the 60s hers was in very good condition they hover a bit over the ground its really cool but I would use one with wheels over it tho
The modern viking they still make and sell flymos. They are very cool, but very pricey.

HTR: effortlessly restores an entire lawnmower. Me, not the slightest bit mechanically inclined, watching: don’t open that part, thats where the genie lives that powers the motor, all the magic is going to leak out!

I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but I can relate. There are still items/systems on my knowledge map that only exist beyond the border labeled, "Here there be dragons", like automagic transmissions. I know it's not actually true, but I still currently think the damn things work via leprechaun entrails and unicorn's blood.
Lawn mowers are more irritating than car motors or jet turbines IMO.

its often cheaper to use something that already exists if there is something that will do the job then it is to manufacture a whole new part. and it would only run on moonshine if it was a diesel engine. I am not sure whether this was gasoline or diesel though.
Cant do that these days with patents and trademarks. Today the money spent to make things "not" compatible is a small fortune alone. Take for instance small rc choppers. 1000 different brands but break a propeller and you won't find a single other brand you could use for a spare. And ouch.. they may be 1/4 to 1/2 the cost of the whole thing.

George Jetson, come on man I am here to tell you the factory where my Mom worked made the shroud the mower rides on, they are fiberglass and resin with color added. She brought one home overnight sometime in the summer of 1965 and I ran it to mow the yard around a farm house, after a couple of times around one part of the yard I got a piece of small rope and spun the mower in a ten foot circle needless to say the yard was mowed in no time.
These mowers are still being made today. They are used mostly on golf courses on the putting greens for a flawless grass surface. Last I looked you to can have one for 3500 to 4000 dollars.

I wish this video existed in the late 70's when I was a teenager. I got one of these at a yard sale or something and desperately wanted to get it to run, but had no idea what to do.
Very nice piece of machinery, I’ve heard about them but never saw one. All you’re missing is an ice cold beer and life is good.
My friends dad had one of these, my buddy didn’t like it as their lawn had a good slope he had to fight it. His dad loved it and would proudly mow the lawn with it. I thought it was cool for being a hovercraft and that it hung on the wall.

The hovering lawn mower: a great concept in theory that is hampered by the reality of non-perfectly-plane lawns.
They’re quite handy for banks where you want to sweep the mower down
Great for soft frequently soggy lawns that would otherwise be torn up by wheels
@@billyb4223 This is what I've used them for in the past. They're very light weight and they make short work out of steep hills.
The one I used had a plastic body and used trimmer line. I'd be scared to use this one I think.

I haven’t see one these since the early 70’s. I mowed a lot lawns as a kid an old woman had one of these it was cool she always wanted her lawn mowed with her mower.

I remember way back when Dad brought home a Flymo. It was a fun way to mow the lawn. Nice resto here. The engine RPM is way too slow. The motor needs a high RPM to mow correctly.

I used to run one of these on a golf course I worked for. Great for mowing soggy ditches!

Looks terribly dangerous but that's one application where a design like this would actually be useful! I hadn't thought of situations like that. I'm assuming you only used it for those wet locations?
I've heard hover mowers don't work over any kind of water unless you've got "power".

well to be fair its a 2 stoke so you really dont have to worry about to much oil getting through. also rings do move around so they wouldnt stay together for very long.
The rings shouldn't move. 2 stroke pistons have little dowel pins so they don't move around because if they do they will get caught on the exhaust port and you'll have to rebuild the engine
Had a few of these when I lived in England , loved them for a small lawn !
Cuts pretty good too. You have a decent looking lawn as well, thick rye, no weeds.
For added Dad points wear sandals with socks.

My lawn has allot of dips and bumps in it. I'd love to have this damn near weightless thing to mow with.
A mower with big tires with independent spring on each would be even better.

@@RyanDiederich Mowers can have suspension systems. Pneumatic tires are, in effect, suspension systems.
dips and bumps are exactly the kind of thing this mower does NOT do well on. you want a completely flat lawn for best performance.
@@thomasneal9291 The cemetery in the town I grew up in would take the handle bars off these and use them on the slopes that were to steep to get with any other mower
5 minutes was the average time it took someone to realise pushing the grass down with an air cushion didn't translate well into cutting said flattened grass.
Maybe not, but nothing cut a high banked terraced lawn like these did.
Fantastic machines! Never had a problem with flattened grass at all. My parents owned one, (of which, somehow. I was the major user) in my teen years. I loved it as it produced a perfectly even bowling green cut and mulched the grass into tiny pieces so there was no raking or disposal of clippings. It now hangs forlornly in my shed waiting for a similar restoration and I'm now in my 60's. They did subsequently have an electric version but it was nowhere near as powerful as the petrol version.

In the 80’s I worked at an apartment complex with long 45 degree slopes of grass. We would tie two ropes to a flymo and two guys would walk along the top and bottom of the slope with the flymo bring pulled up and down to cut the slope.
It draws the air up then pushes to the side, spacers are used to adjust cut height.

I spent time watching somebody else clean for 35 minutes. I have my own stuff that needs cleaning I could have done in the same time... no regrets

Toro still makes them.
They're mostly used by golf courses for bunker edges and steep hills that can't be cut by conventional mowers.
No grass catcher, can't adjust height of cut? Sucks around tree roots.... Just my thoughts after thinking I wanted one as well.

Ya just gotta love 2 cycle engines. They and their parts take so much longer to rust out because of the oil/fuel mixture. Hence, a super clean fuel tank !! Great video H.T.R.
They can't survive ethanol. Today's gas is designed to kill old motors. When Cash for clunkers failed they focused on fuel to force destruct older engines.
I had no idea Tecumseh even made 2-stroke engines.
@@cruzemissile5409 Ok, the problem with that argument is that putting ethanol in gas isn't a new idea; they started doing it back in the '80s (they called it 'Gasohol'). Around here you can get non-oxygenated Premium fuel specifically for small engines and older vehicles. It was the only stuff I would put in my lawn mower and string trimmer.

Again i was mowing a lot of grass back then and where i lived we never even were able to buy Gasahol because just like now the ethanol would separate and join with the moisture and would freeze .

This is the type of restoration I like... With small engines.
These were great. I worked in a UPS building where there a wholesaler of these and I loaded thousands of those things onto trailers heading out between 1978 to 1980. Everybody in our little town had one.

"Flymo" in the early 80s, was a competitor to the " Qualcast Concorde" mower. Flymo was orange, and the other green. I didn't know the Flymo was this old actually.
Maybe you could help me out. When I was a kid, we visited France and the house we stayed at had a plug-in electric flying mower. It was maybe 1990. It looked around ten years old and may have been orange. We were amazed about the electric part and the flying was a bonus. We did mow the grass for fun. Any idea what that may have been?
when I was a kid in the 70s I always told my dad we should get one of those because they seemed really cool compared to the electric wheel type we used. He never would and said they were dangerous.... probably were too LoL - but this is the first time I've actually seen one used up close like this, in your video... great work!

I used to love it, then I moved to the Deep South and learned I'm allergic to the weed they call grass here. Now I can mow the lawn AND do drugs, because I'll spend the rest of the day passed out on Benadryl.

Course mowers including all sorts of reel mowers for greens tees and aprons for the fair ways they used reel gangs and also hydrostatic fairway mowers for the rough usually rotary mowers that brings us to this particular mower it looked funny going in circles with the mower but these mowers were designed for steep inclines and we're the aprons dropped off in back of greens and slopes on elevated tees were larger mowers would tip or leave rutt's and tear up the course they would be utilized with a sweeping motion thanks for posting you are a great mechanic☺️😆👋👍😁

thats the one. even though Toro design the best greenkeeping mowers, for some reason they still try to convince consumers that blowing is better than sucking XD. having airflow into the mower rather than out of it helps the grass blades stand on end before the chop......and why am i explaining this on youtube. i should go to bed

I’m going to say that thing ran for 3 minutes, before cutting off the owners toes and then it got put in the shed for decades.
Nah It probably doesn't hover high enough since it just barely picks itself off the floor I'm thinking it was more like a failed project someone gave up on
My friend cut off his big toe with a fly mow. It was early morning, grass wet with dew, he was on a hill, feet went out from under him, due to wet grass, and the fly mow flew up, landed on his foot. I heard they use weed eater line to cut the grass now.

I mowed the lawn with an electric Flymo all through my childhood and teens and all my fingers and toes are intact
My father, who passed recent,y, used three of these. They are still out in a shed on his property. My parents have a pond on their property and these Flymos would work like a charm cutting grass and various other shoreline plants around the pond edges. My mother told me last week she still wish they were working since she uses a heavy hedge trimmer now to cut the pond edges down. The edges of the pond are sloped and dad loved the fact if he went to too over the pond it would hover above the surface. Because with the length of the handle, much like a standard push mower, we never really worried about running over our feet. Yes I used them as a kid. They were easy to handle.

I love watching these restorations. They are mesmerizing to me. They always come out looking great, maybe even better than original. I'm 62 and have seen a lot of mowers, but I'd never seen one of these. It's really neat!

Holy shit this blows my mind. Hovercrafts are literally my favourite vehicle and the idea of a hovercraft lawn mower makes me plan to get one in the future. This is brilliant.

I remember first seeing a Flymo in the 70’s and thinking it was a new invention. I had no idea they had been out in the 60’s.
At CFB Borden they used one to mow a grassy slope where the Flymo was tied to rope and the operator stayed at the top of the hill and walked back and forth letting the mower down a bit on each pass.
In the 70’s they were orange like the colour of an outdoor extension cord.
I was going to say pretty much the same except it was Fort Henry in Kingston. I wondered back then how they worked on a rope like that. Thanks to our favourite restoration specialist I now know.

Since you mentioned Fort Henry it stirs up memories that that may actually be where I saw it during my Grade 8 year end camping trip.
We visited Montreal and Ottawa along with Fort Henry while camping on the banks of the St. Lawrence River.
That was 30 years ago. I’m getting old.

Nostalgia -- I remember a neighbor's Dad using a bright orange Flymo to mow his very steep front yard when I was growing up, likely the late 70s. He had a thick rope tied to it so he could let it go down the hill then he'd swing the mower left and right as he pulled it up the hill. Years later I realized how fantastically dangerous that was, but when I was little it just seemed like the coolest way to mow a lawn ever. Ah, who needs toes, right?
Same here, they used them on the steep hills in Hawaii in the late 70's.
I seen a guy using one at Fort Colombia on the Colombia river in Washington! He used long ropes on the steep hills!
