Waking up in a hospital after a botched suicide I went home after a week of surgeries. This album was the first I listened to. Alone on the floor of my apartment this song dropped me to my knees. Realizing the life choices I had made to lead me to this dark place. This was 2012, I am now sober and a drug and alcohol counselor at a homeless shelter. Music is the most powerful force on Earth.
Seeing the comments just after his departure vs after his return is wholesome, and shows another reason why the DT fan base is one of the best on the planet. Reminds me why I love music.
I totally agree. When he sings in his low and middle range he's amazing. Plus I've always loved his use of vocal fry and the breathy sound he often uses at the end of lines.
I love Mike Portnoy and was sad to learn of his departure from DT. I wish him all the best....the man has a huge heart and is very generous live perfomer. He once handed me a drumstick at the end of a show only to have some a-hole snatch it, so Mike then hands me another one, makes sure I have it before letting go, I slid it down the front of my dress!!! I still have and covet that purple drumstick!! He is a sweetie!!!
Back in 2009/10 (my memory is fuzzy on it for some reason), I went to a concert in Washington, Maryland with my best friend and his mom. We got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for five minutes at the time, and this lasted an hour. When we got there, we met John Myung in the lobby of the hotel as he was on his way out to a meet and greet at Ernie Ball Music Shop. We managed to get there and decided for shits and giggles, to enter the raffle for two extra tickets. One of us won (I think it was my best friend), and we got to meet John Petrucci and Myung again. We were in the documentary video for the meet and greet (which I'd be surprised if it still existed to this day lmao). I'll remember this for as long as I live. I'll never get another experience like this again, and I'm happy that the one who introduced me to DT, who is also my partner in crime for life, was there to experience it with me.
I listened to this song in every era of my life.. When i lost my family, fell in love, was broke , graduated from school.. everytime it cured me and lifted me up to the ground.. This song can be more effective than the modern depression tratments and cures.. Thanks D.T.
Love this video. Another heart wrenching Dream Theater ballad. I listened to the Wither EP today. It includes three versions: this one, a Rudess/LaBrie duet, and demo with John Petrucci singing lead vocals. JP has a really nice voice, but listening to this brings into such sharp focus just how beautifully sweet, clear and strong James' voice is. It is easy to overlook how great of a front man he is with a band full of virtuosos backing him.
In my opinion, I think this song is about how much pain and failure you can handle in life as you keep going back up. Basically it's vulnerability well handled over invulnerability well expressed. Let everything burn down as you start over and learn from previous mistakes. That's why this song is devastatingly sad but beautiful at the same time, like the keyboard and the guitar solo part.
😂 Petrucci said … if you look it up… is a song about nothing… 😂. Writers block and nothing. But I guess people can interpret what they want. 😂 His words, not mine. 😂👍🇺🇸
Watched this video for the first time and felt like crying...love this band so damn much. Thank you for carrying me during my moments of withering, Dream Theater.
2024, Christmas season. I got laid off from a job I really enjoyed-writing about music. I wasn’t the greatest writer, but talking about music always made me feel excited and alive. Now I’m trying to figure out what’s next, and it feels a little overwhelming, especially now that I’m married. But this song reminded me to take a step back, let go of the worry, and just keep moving forward. I’ll see where things go from here.
It's been over a decade since I first heard this song and it still brings a tear to my eye. Everything from the lyrics, general mood, imagery... Beyond that, the fact that the iteration of DT we see in this video was slowly heading in different directions from each other makes everything about this so bittersweet. They really captured a beautiful moment with this track. This whole album did. I'm happy they're all still doing what they love and thriving in it. They really deserve it.
I'm a big guy.. In 300 lbs of mean ass.. But I hear this song... I break down and shed a tear .. It is one of those songs that I'm glad I was ratting mushrooms and turned on MTV and pull me under came on and I absolutely loved it so much I camped at the Statesville nc mall to buy the cassette.... Thanks dream theater for being one of the sickest bands alive
In general, this song tells about a person's helplessness in facing something that might make him have to try hard and fight for everything. But his efforts and hard work suddenly stopped because he failed to achieve it. If you look closely, the lyrics of this song actually reveal more about the story of the songwriter. Basically, there are three things that underlie me to conclude that there is a symbol of despair in this song, friends. The three things were: Surrender, Hope, and Sadness. These three things for me are global conditions that a person feels when he is desperate
I think John Petrucci, the guitarist, stated that this song is about writer's block, the condition when a writer goes through a severe creative slowdown and feels unable to produce new material, even though he possesses the necessary writing skills. This manifests with ordinary humans too. How often do you know what you want to express, only to then suddenly feel like you cannot even string a sentence together to properly formulate it? The hesitation, the helplessness, the lack of self-confidence... I see all of these elements in the lyrics. But I really like your analysis too. Great metaphor about life struggles and about when nothing ever seems to go your way. You think that you can never really climb out of the hole you're in, so why even bother trying? Really nice song by Dream Theater and certainly one of my favourites.

A lot of people have come up with theories regarding what this song is really about, usually it being about depression or recovering from trauma. But in an interview, John Petrucci said he wrote this song about literally nothing after his wife jokingly suggested that he do so. So yeah, this song is about nothing and its still great.

Let it out, let it out
Feel the empty Space
So insecure find the words and let it out
Staring down, staring down
Nothing comes to mind
Find the place turn the water into wine
But I feel I'm getting nowhere
And I'll never see the end
So I wither
And render myself helpless
I give in and everything is clear
I breakdown
And let the story guide me
Turn it on
Turn it on
Let the feelings flow
Close your eyes
See the ones you used to know
Open up open up
Don't struggle to relate
Lure it out
Help the memory escape
Still transparentness consumes me
And I feel like giving up
So I wither
And render myself helpless
I give in
And everything is clear
I breakdown
And let the story guide me
I wither
And give myself away
Light reflections on the cage
The worlds want to create
I drown in hesitation
My words come crashing down
And all my best creations
Burning to the ground
The thought of staring over
Leaves me paralyzed
Tear it out again
Another one that got away
I wither
And render myself helpless
I give in
And everything is clear
I wither
And render myself helpless
I give in
And everything is clear
I breakdown
And let the story guide me
I wither
And give myself away
