Hey, just wanted you to know, I work for Miele USA in vacuum technical support and we direct our dealers to your videos for instructions on repairing our vacuums, keep up the good work

We use a "star" washer for the center post. This is a directional washer similar to a wheel retainer that grabs the center post with flared teeth and locks in position without putting pressure on the vac body. Works every time.

@rickroberts9182 Does this go on the outside of the cord reel (when both halves are together) or on the inside where the broken tabs would live (before you put the halves back together, and, I think, instead of the white spacer). Thanks!

@hereusethis put the reel on the axle post and compress lightly to engage the contacts, then install the washer on the post with measured force so the reel will rotate without binding. The washer will prevent the reel from separating from the post and ensure electrical integrity.

@@rickroberts9182 Gotcha, thanks so much! I did it before seeing your post, but it sounds like I did it correctly. I had trouble finding the exact size washer (my very well stocked hardware specialty store only had them up to 1/2". I'm thinking 9/16" (or even better 14mm?) would be perfect. I ended up with the 1/2" and bent the star splines out enough to fit it onto the shaft with some pressure. Bigger would be better but I think it's low stress enough on the star splines that it should hold fine.
Especially since I'm a belt/suspenders guy and also put a nylon block in middle of the shaft where the broken retainers originally lived. I used a nylon moly insert as a donor and shaped it to rectangle bar and pushed it in. I then tried to mimic the retainer shape (or at least what I assume the retainers looked like -- flare at bottom, flush with the shaft after about a 1/4"), and made sure it was shaved down enough to put the white sleeve back on (next time I think I'd skip the sleeve and leave the nylon block more "proud" of the shaft). Combined with the star, I think I'm good.
My only worry now is if I rewound the spring the right direction (why yes, I DID have a spring explosion). I think so, since it works correctly, but it's so weird how it rolls back on itself to start the wind on the cord reel. Worst case is that it (spring) breaks at at the connection to the reel, and at that point I get a parts version of the reel from ebay and rebuild it with the star washer.
I really appreciate your help here. I love that "Performance Reviews" has some good info up here, but the "Miele way or no way" (even when he knows alternative fixes) vibe is tough to hear when you're dealing with a company that no longer makes the "correct fix" part. Am I supposed to scrap an otherwise perfectly working vac because the Miele bean counters stopped making the "fixed" replacement part for the defective original design? While I'm full of suggestions, while I totally understand needing to eventually sunset support and parts, it sure would would be great if Miele (hint-hint if you have any pull @brucesnow3592) would release service manuals for products that have hit "unsupported/no-parts" status. "Right to repair" and all....I love these vacs and would love to keep then rolling forever.
      Anyway, thanks again!

I haven't seen any videos on how to replace just the cord - I have a 500 series with a frayed cord, but the reel is OK. How do I replace just the cord?

I usually put tie wrap and couple a drops of super glue instead of washers and works perfect.. No one wanna spend 120 bucks for cord reel only..

The Bojack vacshop way . (Bogus Jack shit ) Doing your customers a disservice . So you do that... then they go elsewhere and get it fixed right. Or worse stop going to vacuum stores and just buy new online. I have seen then happen over and over again.

I’ve done it because because they don’t wanna spend that money to buy the part to fix it right so is not me is the costumers .. Also they are questioning the Miele quality ... But I have never had any complaints after the repair. For me is much earlier to replace the whole cord reel instead fixing it or replace just the cord on it ..

Your logic is quite flawed. If they're not wanting to spend the money on the repair then they're ready for a new vacuum. You never hear any complaints because the people who complain go to other places. There is a much more proper way of fixing and cord reel. But business-wise it makes no sense to do.

For 20 years in business I have never lost a single costumer.. Matter a fact we are number one store for repair and sales in the town . I fix vacuums and other appliances since I was 13 , like you said there is a lot better ways to fix the cord reel. Of course you have to watch your time too . Sometimes we are getting 12-17 machines a day for service and most of them are time sensitive..

Did this customer decide to get the cord reel replaced? For the filter indicator, does that go by the the vacuum's board keeping track or run time or something else like air flow?

This was a common problem with this model. Both my sister and I 'blew the bank' and bought two of these a few years back, they both conked out within weeks of each other six years later. :o)
