Pop knew since day one that Wemby would be unstopable as a 5. But he wanted him to learn how to play as a 3/4 in the 1st half of the season. Actually pop had a kind of road map of how he wanted Wemby to learn and grow and set the pieces around him. Next season will be scary
This is a once-in-a-lifetime talent getting a Doctorate from Pop. Let's not over-complicate this. If he had gone to Charlotte, you might have seen more production earlier, but you wouldn't have seen the growth. Also, they just beat the Nuggets tonight, and Wemby was the best player on the floor. They caused a 5 sec on the last possession and it looked like they had just won the Title. That is Pop's influence.
What reasoning do you have to say that it's "completely absurd"? He has seriously looked like one of the greatest rookies of all time, both analytically as well as via the eye test. JJ, I would like to suggest you add video footage to your discussions. It would be helpful for those of us new to the game to see in action the things you describe. Big fan, keep up the critical thinking and analysis.
Each time Wemby's block results in a change of possession, it is worth about an extra point for the Spurs over a block that allows the opposing team to keep possession of the ball. Plus it's hella awesome to see him either 'catch' the opponent's shot attempt or pin it against the glass. Each one is a change of possession.

He could possibly be the best player in the league by the end of next season!
@@seththomas6727 well, I grew up in the Kansas City metro and was drawn to the Admiral and their head coach, Larry Brown, being a former coach of the Jayhawks.
I was on team Chet and I was 100% wrong. Chet is incredible and is going to dominate for many years but Wemby is the best rookie I've seen since Lebron.
Same here. I love seeing how Chet fit into the OKC squad and I love watching them playing. But individually speaking, Wemby is a whole different thing.
I am an OKC fan and I believe that Chet should be second in RotY. Realistically he is not doing as much as Wembanyama which is really not to blame him. He is not asked to do that since the team does not need it. JJ Redick said it best. We have to account for role.
People need to understand how important it has been that he was drafted to a team with a coach and front office that has structure. Imagine if this guy was drafted by a team like the 76ers. Wemby is also a lucky guy too.
@@Éga_Fr I’m not talking about his ability to do better in any other team. I’m talking about having a structure and patience to maximise his god given skill set at that height. There were some great talents in the past who have not been able maximise due to front office, bad systems, bad ownership and other non-basketball intangibles
@@eggstube Short term gains are incentivised rather than sustainable long term gains in front offices. So GM are worried about today and tomorrow rather than in 5 years with a super talent. Most often that leads to never ending player changes and excuses to keep their own jobs. 76ers are an example of jumping from one thing to another every year.
@@ebok33643 Now they suffer from Embidd injury. Its also prove if GM got a backbone, they can hit another jokic like Denver did. With today world economic, i love to have most GM to be level-headed and want to invest. After that NBA going into whole new level. Sadly, i think this era will have big player, big iq dominant with teamplay.
I think the best compliment to Victor is the state of the game today. He is so versatile and moves so smoothly. His ability to shoot the 3, learning to post up and play one on one in the post, he can make mid range shots, great shot blocker, he can pass the ball on par with Pops expectation, he fits the culture of the Spurs and he’s a true 5 tool star. He learned the speed of the game very quickly and he’s only going to be more dangerous
The initial disappoint came from the spurs offensively looking like a pickup men’s game. Team throwing up shots before Wemby got down the court, in turn that had him playing a style where he wasn’t 14:13 really a matchup problem despite still having decent numbers. When the team Iq improves it will be a problem.
Wemby has gotten used to the physicality and people trying to bully him....he now knows he is bigger and stronger than most guys. He has become more vocal and a leader on the floor
Going from "there is nothing wemby can do to win ROTY" to "he is having the greatest rookie season of all time" in just 4 weeks should tell you everything you need to know about how much effort they put into their analysis'.
He started putting up Wilt numbers this last month or two lol. He wasnt doing that at the beginning of the year. Chet had more output by Christmas, on a better team.
Letting Chet be eligible for ROY when its his second year has always been the real problem for me, but without him theres no drama in the competition at all
I don’t think any rookies out there, even come close to what this guy Vic can do. He has shown veterans players that he’s in higher levels than a lot of players. 110% rookie of the year.
This isn’t a debate about legends, but I’m glad that wemby has the mentality that he does. he has the chance to be an all-time great, and just the way he speaks passionately about basketball and his mentality feels very kobe/mj like. The NBA needs more people like him, rather than players, who just want to collect a check.
As a Spurs fan, I'll be the first to say I didn't hold it against people if they chose Chet for ROTY before the New Year. Wemby was putting up some impressive stat lines but Chet was almost matching them. So when people were factoring in wins to the equation, I didn't agree but I saw the logic. Now, if you think Chet is the ROTY you're either an OKC fan or a hater lol
As an OKC fan it took me awhile to concede ROTY to Wemby, but we can't win every trophy and Wemby really is special. Still not backing off SGA for MVP though.
Yeah the fact Wemby has to eclipse Chet to win ROTY says so much about narratives for the NBA. I get they want a rivalry between two promising players. We all do. But Chet plays on a much better team. Wemby averages 3.4 APG, could easily be 5 or more with better teammates.
@@gabrielcarrasco9078 agreed. Just the stuff he does on the court being the focal point of opposing defenses. Chet is the third option. I’ve been both the first and lesser options. Night and day. Also, the tough part of the NBA isn’t just the games. It’s the travel. The two a days. The quick turn-around between games )(one scouting report just done, gave to start prepping for the next), diet, regimen, understanding the ins and outs, learning the offenses and defenses, knowing how to taking to certain situations and what to take away from huskies, etc. Chet got a year of that whereas Wemby just came in as a foreigner. An example would be a high schooler living college life and sitting in on college classes for a year but not being tested or scored then taking the class the second year, vs. a high schooler taking the class right off the bat. Not even course. It was just such an overwhelming advantage in Chet’s situation and these people are making it a rivalry because they got skill similar stats through a handful of games lol. Sometimes I wonder if people just look at stats and make their final determination. Wemby is only going to be better.
Appreciate the honesty about getting a take wrong ...but it's a sports take. An apology is a bit dramatic ha. More media revising their takes and admitting simply they got something wrong would be great and is refreshing 👏🏽

This kid is locked in like no one since maybe Lebron or Kobe
The conversation has shifted from is he rookie of the year? To is he the defensive player of the year as well? No disrespect to Chet, any other year he'd be ROTY.

Wemby was always better from the start. He scored 38 points against the Suns near the start of the season. Problem is the Spurs are a bad team and hard to watch sometimes. Feels bad that they were going to penalize Wemby for being in a bad team.
Here’s the problem with the whole “different roles“ argument for Chet versus Victor. I fully believe that if Victor was on a team with an MVP caliber player like Shai, and multiple other competent scores and passers, defenses would not pay nearly as much attention to him, much like Chet is played now. The only difference is, while Chet is very efficient in his role, I really believe that Victor would average 25 PPG and 13 RBS. I am very efficient shooting. Chet gets wide open looks in the flow of the offense, Victor is having to be out on an island for most of the season, just having to create everything for himself. He’s also much more aggressive than Chet, and I think this is just the rookie year difference between a potential GOAT candidate, and a potential all NBA talent. Both are great, but there is a considerable gap.
Wembanyama is going to be the most unstoppable player of all time. He hasn’t even developed his signature moves yet. This guy could average 40 20 5 assists and 5 blocks a game for his career and I wouldn’t even be surprised.
As a life long Spurs fan, no one made the HOF in the first year, but a clean playing team is better than a drama filled team, give #1 a couple of years, we will still stand behind our team. !!!

Pop knew since day one that Wemby would be unstopable as a 5. But he wanted him to learn how to play as a 3/4 in the 1st half of the season. Actually pop had a kind of road map of how he wanted Wemby to learn and grow and set the pieces around him. Next season will be scary
@@wetfire008 they might still get the #1 pick in the draft, and to my eye the top 4 look like starters.
Wemby switching to the 5 was what changed it for me, dude’s been a killer
We appreciate the honesty JJ. Thank you from a spurs fan
And wemby is doing it playing 1v9
fax all he needs is a decent pg to get him the ball
😂
Lol they won without him the other day, but sure
This is a once-in-a-lifetime talent getting a Doctorate from Pop. Let's not over-complicate this. If he had gone to Charlotte, you might have seen more production earlier, but you wouldn't have seen the growth. Also, they just beat the Nuggets tonight, and Wemby was the best player on the floor. They caused a 5 sec on the last possession and it looked like they had just won the Title. That is Pop's influence.
Its not a question if he‘s the best rookie this year. Its worth discussing him being the greatest rookie ever tho
Haha. That’s completely absurd
What reasoning do you have to say that it's "completely absurd"? He has seriously looked like one of the greatest rookies of all time, both analytically as well as via the eye test. His team when he's on the court vs when he's off the court also has the highest delta in key variables in the entire league (defensive rating, offensive rating, etc). So no, not absurd.@@soonerhammons
@@WhipItSBreezy Look up Kareems rookie season, and the Bucks record the year before... or Wilts rookie season when he won the MVP. Yes, they were older, still rookies. Best rookie season by a player under 20 when the season started? There is a real argument. Best rookie ever? No, just no.
@@soonerhammonswhat do you mean it’s absurd?
😂
@@soonerhammons Not on the real of absurdity if you go by per 36 minutes which is Wemby's argument against because of his limited minutes played.
JJ, I would like to suggest you add video footage to your discussions. It would be helpful for those of us new to the game to see in action the things you describe. Big fan, keep up the critical thinking and analysis.
Chet's first season reminds me Alonzo. Incredible rookie stats, but Zo had Shaq and Chet has Wemby
That's a deep pull but a perfect example.
Pop deserves Wenby
Congratulations on 1 mill!! I love watching your videos so much. This channel is a basketball lovers' dream.
I simply want to declare how spoiled I am as a sports fan. I am now in my mid-40s and have been both a Chiefs and Spurs fan for practically 30 years. I not only get to enjoy the run Patrick has taken my Chiefs for the past 6 years, but now, after enjoying the ride Timmy, Manu, and Tony took the Spurs on what has already become 10 years ago, but now get to enjoy watching Victor develop on my favorite team! He could possibly be the best player in the league by the end of next season!
Those are two random teams to love ha
@@seththomas6727 well, I grew up in the Kansas City metro and was drawn to the Admiral and their head coach, Larry Brown, being a former coach of the Jayhawks.
Wemby is a real alien. That guy is from another planet and I'm glad I actually get to see him play
Idk...but I am really happy these guys are having so much fun. So much fun that they will remind you of it every 15-20 seconds. Love that.
I'm an OKC fan so I love Chet but Wembanyama is clearly above anything we've seen.
Wemby is all time talent and very important is that he landed on Spurs.
He will have best possible chance to grow in all-time great player.
By the way he has been waaAy better than Lebron as a rookie
Better than lebron
Once he gets a few solid vets, a second legit star and an efficient PG it is over.
I don’t think it’s crazy to say Wemby might be the MVP next year.
I’ve just never seen anything like this. Not even old Wilt games. Insane.
I don't think so... Wemby was trained in France and had the same mentality. I think he would have done great even in an other team
@@Éga_Fr I’m not talking about his ability to do better in any other team. I’m talking about having a structure and patience to maximise his god given skill set at that height. There were some great talents in the past who have not been able maximise due to front office, bad systems, bad ownership and other non-basketball intangibles
You're completely right. As a seed, he required the right soil. Most NBA teams, aren't the right soil for the majority of young players.
The Spurs will be up 10 when Wemby comes out and everyone is just hoping the Spurs don't get blown out while he's off the court
I remember one game he went out and it was 15 - 9. by the time he came back in, it was 17-29, lol!
@@bvaldez21 I think that was against the lakers. Its really nerve wracking with him not on the floor.
I am so happy no one can deny Vic. Someone will come in and say anything bad basketball wise about Wemby he getting shut down by everyone else
Wemby should be defensive player of the year!
It makes me laugh how Americans are shocked by Wemby's level of skill and how strong he is, whereas we French have known that since he was 15.😂
I’m glad you see the light JJ
Wemby has gotten used to the physicality and people trying to bully him....he now knows he is bigger and stronger than most guys. He has become more vocal and a leader on the floor
Going from "there is nothing wemby can do to win ROTY" to "he is having the greatest rookie season of all time" in just 4 weeks should tell you everything you need to know about how much effort they put into their analysis'.
He started putting up Wilt numbers this last month or two lol. He wasnt doing that at the beginning of the year. Chet had more output by Christmas, on a better team.
It also wasnt 4 weeks. Not even close. You were mad about the take 4 weeks ago though
5 weeks ago, JJ called the race “neck and neck”
Up till then Wemby was one of the most inefficient shooters in the league
@@thebigmanufacturer Holy passion, it's alright bro everybody has bad takes
Letting Chet be eligible for ROY when its his second year has always been the real problem for me, but without him theres no drama in the competition at all
Exactly, we all have to pretend like he's on his first year.
I don’t think any rookies out there, even come close to what this guy Vic can do. He has shown veterans players that he’s in higher levels than a lot of players. 110% rookie of the year.
I feel good to be a Spurs fan
It was not Spurs fans, it was everyone with eyes.
There's a reason even back then the dislike ratio was so high.
He only got better.
I can’t even see the dislikes anymore.
In almost any other season, Chet would easily win RotY. Unfortunately his injury last season put him in the same rookie class as Wemby
This sounds a lot like Mike Florio’s conversation/apology to Lamar Jackson. It’s an insult if this guy doesn’t win DPOY
His learning curve is rounding out so fast. Theoretically it should peak much higher than average too.
“At the time, I’d still pick Holgrem”
Lmao, that was like 3 weeks ago..😂
This isn’t a debate about legends, but I’m glad that wemby has the mentality that he does. he has the chance to be an all-time great, and just the way he speaks passionately about basketball and his mentality feels very kobe/mj like. The NBA needs more people like him, rather than players, who just want to collect a check.
And do not forget, Chet is 2 years older than Wemby. 2 years! Imagine what Wemby will do with 2 more years of development.
"It's just fun, it's just fun. Basketball is fun." Yes it is!
I can see multiple quadruple doubles coming down the pipeline for wemby
If you gave him an all player at point and another good small forward who’s about the 3 & D, sky is the limit
without them sky is still the limit
To me, it was clear from the get-go that Wemby and Chet weren’t even in the same class.
Wemby is showing basically the skill gap between Wilt and his competitors.
Appreciate the honesty about getting a take wrong ...but it's a sports take. An apology is a bit dramatic ha. More media revising their takes and admitting simply they got something wrong would be great and is refreshing 👏🏽
I believe he's the clear RotY but he should be highly considered for DPoY as well.
Chet would win most years, but Wemby is one of the best Rookies ever.
his physical attributes help even more than i thought they would and that not trying to take anything from his skill cuz he gots that for days tooo
Wemby has to win both the ROTY and the DPOY.
No bodied to much
Can you believe the Spurs go from dead last to 6th best defensive unit in the league with Wemby on?
DPOY? LMAO. Sengun dropped 45 on his head.
@@kujklokpDuop Reath dropped 26 on Govert literally the night before the Spurs played the Rockets and Wemby blocked Sengun multiple times

Chet is great but he doesn't belong in the same conversation as Wemby. Best rookie big since Shaq.
I'm a Spurs fan. Love Wemby. Amazing young talent. Watch him play every game. But... For the love of God... Can we please stop with these stupid stat permutations? These "first player in history to block at least two shots AND play at least 22 minutes AND make 4 threes AND get a technical foul AND get tripped at center court" are getting so ridiculous you could sensationalize literally anybody if you look long enough.
You're almost 40 years old, JJ. Why are you wearing a ball cap backwards indoors?
These guys had to see wemby absolutely dominate Chet just to understand what we all did 2 months ago. Chet is great. Wendy had a chance to be goat and I think he knows it. He reminds me of young Kobe in the way he articulates himself and the drive. This kid came into the league with a Steph curry level pre game routine. This kid is locked in like no one since maybe Lebron or Kobe
The conversation has shifted from is he rookie of the year? To is he the defensive player of the year as well?
No disrespect to Chet, any other year he'd be ROTY.
Chet stats for march so far:
28 min, 13 Pts, 46% 2pt, 21% 3pt, 81% FT, 7.8 Rbd, 2.6 Ast, 0.8 Blk, 0.2 Stl
I can't imagine the reactions if Wemby had such a stats line
Wemby was always better from the start. He scored 38 points against the Suns near the start of the season. Problem is the Spurs are a bad team and hard to watch sometimes. Feels bad that they were going to penalize Wemby for being in a bad team.
Wemby locked in, just give him time. That will tell the story. I’d bet the house that he’s gonna be great. 1 if not 2 of the new generation.
Great show!
Wembanyama is going to be the most unstoppable player of all time. He hasn’t even developed his signature moves yet. This guy could average 40 20 5 assists and 5 blocks a game for his career and I wouldn’t even be surprised.
Bro on the bottom right looked absolutely zooted 🤣
As a life long Spurs fan, no one made the HOF in the first year, but a clean playing team is better than a drama filled team, give #1 a couple of years, we will still stand behind our team. !!!

I think I'd have to go with Kareem for best rookie season ever, the Bucks won 49 more games with him than they did the season before. 28.8 ppg, 14.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game to go with it is pretty sick.
Sure. But I think he was 22 in his rookie year. You have to factor that.
How could anyone not see this? I seen this last year, especially knowing he beat Rudy Gobert at 16 lol. He can move more athletic than most guards. And can shoot uncontested for the most of the time. Legend in the making. Can’t believe you didn’t see that. And everyone talks about basketball IQ. lol Vic is one of the best rookies ever. He doesn’t even play 30 minutes and we do not even know many players on his team, still averages double double and leads league in blocks.
Anyone who thought Chet was the ROY over victor at any point was extremely stupid and naive

Quite hot take considering we're talking about Spurs. They know what they're doing. OKC sucked for a couple of years but accumulated draft capital and where they are now? Spurs want to go the same route except they had done this before and won championships.
