    I think the handwriting analysis stuff is so cool. I wonder how accurate these things are… do we even have enough texts to get a good estimate of the minimum and maximum allowable ages for a given handwriting style? If the NT data is this sparse, what are we calibrating against and how much data is there? Really fascinating stuff

    • @Ken_Scaletta
      @Ken_Scaletta ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paleography is not an exact science, for sure, and it has a margin of error but it's at least ok at telling you LATEST likely dates. Handwriting changes over time so you can usually have confidence that if you see a letter written a certain way, it was after a certain time. it doesn't necessarily work the other way around, though. Something that looks old isn't necessarily old because sometimes people deliberately imitated older writing styles for aesthetic or political or theological reasons (just like people sometimes imitate old timey handwriting now). Paleography is mostly reliable in most cases but it's not scientific. It's more likely to misdate something as early than as late.

      @DrKippDavis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are tens of thousands of mss outside of the NT that provide useful comparative data for dating. These are not just literary texts, but also documents, letters and inscriptions.

      @@DrKippDavis Nice! I didn’t know there were so many? How many of those are really informative wrt handwriting? E.g., do inscriptions really help that much if the tools used to shape the letters differ from those used to write on papyrus? And do we think that business transaction records are informative about the handwriting of the people who would have copied the NT text? Genuinely curious… I don’t have strong priors here.

    "Although a few Christian books may be as old as the 2nd century, none of them must be that old ... The drive to have older and older Christian manuscripts, however, shows no signs of abating".

    At the end, @DrKippDavis says we have no reason to suspect the 2nd Century mss. are very different from the originals, but we don't know. I do remember from my extensive study of Ehrmaneutics that the *rate* of variation is higher the older the date range we examine, which does not bode well for anyone's hopes of approximating the autographs. Cool to see Dr. Kill exercising his ancient Greek chops.

    I get to correct Kipp, this will be fun.
    P66 is not the "complete" gospel of John, even if we deal with missing pieces
    - missing the pericope adulterae
    - missing most of chapter 21

    • @DrKippDavis
      @DrKippDavis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By calling it a complete copy I meant to show that at least we have evidence of what was once an intact copy of "John," however it happened to look at the end of the second century.

    The conclusion is incorrect: He ends with "We just don't know". No, we do know the manuscripts are old. The church fathers were very clear on this.
    Evidence is evidence, including testimony and tradition,. Even if you don't like this kind of evidence, it is evidence.
