Both of my children learned how to shoot on these. Now in their twenties both of them have a love of firearms and sport shooting. These are the 10/22 of this era. Everyone should own one or two. The perfect platform to learn on before moving on into the 556 AR.
My S&W MP15-22 had some issues out of the box. Consistent FTEs. I installed a Volquartsen extractor and it made a huge difference!
I just wrote the same thing!
You've finally found an interesting use for California-compliant magazines.
One thing I can tell you is the gen two I own held up to 1500 rounds in one week without any major hiccups, firing in binary about 90% of the time. Definitely the most fun of all the rifles I own. I highly recommend any 15-22 owner to install a binary trigger!
These are decent, but the king is the Tippman. It’s a fully functional, metal made AR in 22 caliber. It’s the best training rifle in 22 caliber, to simulate the AR platform
Several others have mentioned the Tippman rifles. Do you happen to know how much they cost?
@@hrfunk i got mine for 470, but that was a few years ago. I think they’re typically around 550-590 now. But to be honest, they’re definitely worth it.
I have two of them, the old version and the newer version. Love them both! Thanks to that rifle I got my wife into shooting.
Over the years the have proven to be reliable.
I've had one for a few years now and it has digested every type of .22LR ammo I've fed it, including old tarnished and nasty ammo. Quite impressed with the dependability.
I absolutely love mine and have it setup with the same exact accessories I have on my regular rifles for cheap practice and it’s also my daughter’s shtf rifle! It pairs nicely with the S&W 22 Compact!
I've owned a few sw rifles. Always worked wonderful, that one looks great
Well now this is a interesting video and a very interesting 22LR rifle. I bought one of the very early models years ago but mine did have the flash suppressor on it. There was a lot of things that I did not like about it and I corrected all of them. First thing I did was put on a 15-in free floating handguard. Then I changed out the trigger to a 3 lb AR-15 type trigger. I also put in a high quality aftermarket firing pin Aunt extractor. As for the sight I use a Sig Sauer Romeo 5 Red dot.
I have the same model. This has become my favorite rifle. I keep it in my side by side and truck, both. I have been wanting a single point sling attachment, a big thanks for the Midwest option.
As always great video.
Thank you! So far the MI sling attachment has worked quite well.
Cant believe you did'nt have one of these. I have 3 and they are very handy tools. Like my M&P 22 c pistol, wouldnt be without one. Look forward to the video.
Nice rifle HR. I bought the similar .22 AR from H&K and love it. I put a Silencerco suppressor on it and a red dot sight. Never had a failure to feed or eject even with subsonic ammo.
I have one of S&W's older quadrail MOE offerings and I would concur with your observation that it is one of the more reliable semi-auto rimfire offerings.
First, I agree on your assessment. Secondly, I used Marlin M1 carbine. 22s and then a 10-22 for semiautomatic training before picking up a the S&W AR .22. This was for my wife to train for ARs. She loves it over real ARs (Go figure). From a distance, if you add the old long flash suppressor from an AR carbine, they look like a suppressor. Also, using a strip of electrical tape, you can cover the gap of light in the magazine. So, from a distance, it looks and SOUNDS like a suppressed AR. We had a guy come up to us on a range and ask if he could try our SUPPRESSED AR CARBINE. He was shocked. So, if I needed to ADD some armed folks to a group, I could add two people are in this manner. Not the best but numbers count. In these days of availability and increasing ammo costs, these AR .22s are a great fun and training tool. I still have some .22 bolt action and lever action rifles but I find I am grabbing these when I lead out to a range. I also do not advocate. 22s for serious social situations (SSS) but they do work in keeping people ducking in those SSS when used with other long guns. By the way, I have experience dealing with investigations where the .22s were used in homicides and accidental deaths. Yes, they are a version of the modern rifle and excell in multi uses. Thanks for the video.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
Good morning, HRFUNK and family. ☕️. My dad and I were talking about purchasing AR 22LR .Something we can train at the house. We don't have the backspot built up yet for anything stronger than shotgun loads yet. I'm working on it, tho. You'll have to keep us informed on the reliability of this model. I'm sure it being a Smith&Wesson. Be no major problems with it. I was actually thinking of having my gunsmith build a GOOD AR lower to work with uppers of different calibers. I've been 👀 balling Bear Creek lately on uppers. Will see.
Thnx Guy! I like mine after several thousand rounds only issue i have ever had was ammo related. Have to keep bcg wiped down & ran wet. Make sure the bolt face & breech face doesn't hammer the carbon to a hard flakey nighmare to scrub off. I have had 2mags do the exact same thing with feed lips have started to close & completely quit operating correctly. & as with any .22 keep bore clean.
Good evaluation and review. That does look like a fun rifle, and it works. Good shooting!
Thank you!
You did it again!
Went back and looked at mine and it is older with the square rail setup and a flash hider.
I looked at the safety and it is fairly tight and clicky but it is also plastic.
I stuck with the OEM stock and grip.
Topped it with an old Bushnell TR-25 that still works on the original battery and a pair of Magpul BUIS.
You are 100% correct about the mag loading procedure.
Mine has been reliable, accurate out past 100yds and just a joy to have and shoot.
Good content!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
You are most welcome. As always, thanks for watching!
I almost forgot, add a brass catcher, and it is almost perfect since you can shoot all you want and don't have to pick up brass! '
They are great little weapons. I love mine and also my 15-22 pistol with a SB adjustable tactical brace. Fun little accurate weapon. Mine love CCI STINGER and VELOCITOR ammo.
👍👍 looks great, thanks for the review
Great review sir. Thanks.
I like the idea of a practice AR in 22, just never been pleased with needing to buy a particular type of 22 ammo that functions well for a semi auto. Glad you enjoy the new rifle!
I have the M&P15/22P for my granddaughter and she loves it! For good reason too. It’s been the most dependable.22 I’ve ever owned! It will run even the crappy bulk ammo that my 10/22s and others won’t. I don’t know why, maybe the AR trigger and hammer group hits so hard?
DANGIT!!! I was expectin to see my old friend, my USAF issue Model 15.... oh well....
Neat rifle, those M&P15 22's. If I hadnt built a purpose built 22LR carbine when O'Bama was elected, the Smith is the rifle I'd have!
Im with you funk !! I don't wanna take 25 rounds at close range or 22lr screaming out of a 16 inch barrel ..my guess it ruins someone's day
Mine too!
Thanks for these videos hrfunk. I know little about AR-15 platforms, I am more cowboy lever rifle and revolver guy :)
I like the leverguns too. Thanks for watching!
Chief, I was just in our very large local gun store a few days ago and they told me unequivocally they are seriously contemplating dropping the S&W line up across the board. They told me they send more S&W's back to the factory then all the other brands put together. WHAT A SHAME - but the QC coming out of their factory over the last decade has been despicable. I own a nice collection of S&W's but hey are all vintage models. Until they get their act together (if they ever do) I would not buy another new one. There are too many GOOD choices out there without all the issues of QC. So who is to blame? IMHO, the CEO! Company's are run from the top down - they have had their chance to self correct but they have chose to ignore instead. Hard for me to say all this as I am an aficionado of their older stuff. Today they make nothing I'd buy. I am not the least upset at you - but I just needed to say this regarding the current S&W QC situation. I wish it weren't so!
I'm hoping the S&W move to Tennessee will resolve some of the QA problems which are documented. The workforce in Springfield MA was problematic. Only time will tell. Now that S&W is in a 2A friendly state their eye will, hopefully, be on the ball.
Me too, and I completely understand your comment. Hopefully with their new facility coming on line, we’ll see an improvement in their quality. Thanks for watching!
Smith and wesson like kimber
My 15-22 ran like complete trash until I saw a video that said you need an volquartsen extractor. Since I installed one, it’s never had a problem.
i enjoy my smith, dependability rates right up there with my old 10-22,thanks
I suspect that your review has just sold a bunch of new S&W 15-22 rifles. I bought one in December, 2011 and it's quite accurate. My Granddaughter now owns it. Thank you for another excellent review.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
Nice review! There's alot of value in these rifles. And fun, too! 👍👍
Agreed.
Hi HR, very nicely done. Yeah, local Cabelas had a special on these rifle several years ago and couldn’t pass on the deal. Turned out to be a nice addition of .22 LR firearms!
Only real changes I made was an ambi-safety since I need to shoot rifles left handed/eye now. I also had a BSR reflex red/green dot sight laying around so I attached it to the mounting system. Indoor range is only 25 yards and it shot very accurate.
Curious on that sling you had at beginning for possibly an additional option.
Keep doing the good work!
Will do. Thanks for watching!
The M&P 15-22 is an awesome rimfire 👍
Their 10 round mags are better for bench work.
A couple of decades ago I was debating between a cheap plastic dedicated rimfire AR, an AR conversion kit, or a dedicated all metal complete upper. The all metal complete dedicated upper had a stainless steel bull barrel whose grove diameter was the proper 0.223"; not the erroneous 0.224 grove diameter. So I want that route because I wanted accuracy and never looked back.
This is a very good video and good info here.
Thank you!
Good morning HR. Good review on the AR22. With the threaded barrel you can install a muzzle brake to handle the heavy recoil of 22 high velocity. If it had a forward assist and you pushed hard enough you might get a 5.56 to chamber.😂
I didn’t like the gap on the magpul grip either so I changed it to the magpul SL K grip because it doesn’t have the beaver tail on the back and fits flush with the receiver and is basically the same exact grip minus the beaver tail! Also thanks for the tip on the Midwest sling mount! You can also get aftermarket extended charging handles for it!Great video!
Thank you! Where did you find the charging handles?
@@hrfunk NDZ performance and Next Level Arms has some nice ones but just search on google 15-22 charging handle and you will see several! They also make special bad lever clones for the 15-22 as well! Also the 10 rounders can be hard to find but they are worth it! Thanks again for a great video!
@@hrfunk after further research apparently Radian makes a charging handle and ambi safety selector for the M&P15-22! That would probably be the best option and I’m gonna order them myself!
Great review chief. I’ve been considering the S&W for years but never loved it enough to actually buy it. Recently I did buy the Tippmann M4. I haven’t brought the M4 home yet as the gun shop is installing an amby safety as I am left handed. Have you held/shot the Tippmann?
No. Someone else mentioned a Tippmann M4 as well. I might have to look into them.
that's true. you do not want to make the GUNNY unhappy
Great video!
Thank you!
I like these rifles. Good trainer.
HR your Senior DI already knows that your weapon needs cleaned. Remember DI 's are Physics . Well at least mine were .lol. I have the Kryptonite Camouflage stock I took it out of the safe this morning and noticed that the pistol grip was FDE . I like your idea on mounting a Bipod. The 10 round magazine should come with the rifle . Happy Cleaning and when you're finished report to the Rose Garden. Semper Fi.
Sir, Aye aye, Sir!
@@hrfunk H.R. on closer inspection of my Smith and Wesson M&P 15 22 . I have a flushed pistol grip with no gap . I bought mine four years ago if memory serves me correctly.
Warning: FUDD ALERT
I like this Smith “AR style” .22. I can easily see a kid walking through woods or fields with it, plinking at fence posts, pine cones and occasional pesky critters. Similarly, adults can get a good deal of enjoyment and utility from a decent, autoloading, rimfire rifle.
Much more importantly, however, HR’s video causes me to remember many elementary school and junior high years, when my family would borrow a friend’s austere and remote Vermont, mountainside farmhouse for a couple weeks every Summer. It was 15+ miles to town, it had no electricity, there were no neighbors for miles, the only running water was drawn - ice cold - and from a small uphill stream, a dilapidated kerosine stove was used to prepare our meals, and a few ancient kerosine lamps provide very poor illumination. But it had a wonderful, large stone fireplace to warm us and to serve as the farmstead’s centerpiece. AND - for me - it was heaven on earth.
Most mornings I’d be awake by 0530 and I’d go for a one or two hour woods walk, with the cabin’s trusty .22, single shot, Remington Rolling Block rifle as my companion. I certainly cannot remember if it was a .22 short on long, or the barrel length, or the sights, or the type(s) of ammunition I’d use. But, off I’d go with perhaps 20 rounds in my pocket. This Remington - which required the substantial steel breech block to be rotated downward to extract each spent cartridge case and to insert a new round - was really quite accurate, it never failed, and it was a product of an era when quality craftsmanship was the rule. As I’d walk familiar trails and weedy two-track dirt logging roads, I’d fire at miscellaneous targets. These were among the happiest times of my life and I learned a great many firearms safety and accuracy fundamentals.
No comparison between this video’s S&W .22 and that already ancient (I’d guess it was manufactured in the late-1800’s or the very early-1900’s) Remington can be made. However, I can still easily recall the pleasures and the serenity those walks provided.
Thanks for the great story Roy!
Hey another thing, with 8 power at that range the clock should have been a breeze, have you tried unscrewing the diopter to get the image more clear while you're focused on your crosshairs
The diopter only focuses the reticle, not the target. That requires a parallax adjustment which the Hi Lux scope does not have.i suspect my difficulty in seeing the clock was mostly due to the fact that the image of the clock is small and not well defined. It’s difficult to see even with 10X magnification.
This could be fun tomorrow morning :) Welcome to hrfunk house of pain :)
This one doesn’t go live until Saturday morning.
I just bought two 10 round magazines from Midway USA 05-01-24
@HRFunk, Chief, do you have the CMMG conversation kit? I would love to see a comparison done with the HRFunk level of specificity.
No, I don't. If I get one, I'll certainly make a video to compare it with the 15-22.
Got your message. I haven’t had time to reply yet.
THE BEST TIPPMANN ARMS M4-22 PRO ELITE. ALL METAL CONSTRUCTION AND SUPER ACCURATE . YOU GOTTA CHECK THEM OUT IF YOU WANT A GREAT M4-22lr. Nickel size groups at 25 yards. They make short barrel pistols now 7" and 12"
How much do they cost?
@scottperson9487 Thanks for the info!
Third shot counts as a tack driver. At 7 yards, having the correct holdover is difficult.
5 shot groups please
You will find if you run this gun long enough it becomes jam city. Runs great clean though. We have one with several thousand rounds that’s a single shot unless you properly clean out fouling.
That might be somewhat ammunition dependent. I ran a lot of rounds through my old 15-22, and I don’t remember the last time I cleaned it.
Someone I know said because the upper receiver has a bunch of polymer, you’ll always lose your zero.
I never had that problem with my old rifle.
What Hearing Protection do you use? Is it the Axil Ear Buds?
I use a variety of products from Isotunes Sports. In this video I’m using their “Caliber” Bluetooth plugs.
10 round magazines are available for them. I have one. I don't remember the manufacturer.
I just got one.
I'm looking to get a gun licence in the UK and i think a 22 rifle is the best option to start with but this rifle is out of my price range so i was actually looking at an MP5 clone and i like the stock n it better because it has more adjustment
May I ask what is required to receive a license there?
@@hrfunk i haven't got all the information yet its very complicated
Best of luck.
@@hrfunk thanks
There was an issue with them that resulted in Project Appleseed banning their use from their events. Not sure if that was ever resolved.
I never heard that. Do you know what the issue was?
@@hrfunk A deeper look, it seems it had a few out of battery detonations during events. Seemed to be a bolt issue which S&W addressed with a bolt gauge/recall. I posted a reply with the unlisted S&W video link talking about it, but the Tube must not have liked it.
I remember that. I received one of the gauges. My rifle was fine so I didn’t have to return it.
👍👍
Is there ever a need for a new upper, or do the barbells and other parts last forever.
I don’t remember ever hearing of someone wearing out a barrel with .22 ammunition.
@@hrfunk great! thank you!
I think it would be better to build out a budget AR 15 and use the CMMG .22 conversion kit.
Why would that be better?
@@hrfunk It would probably be cheaper and more like a full size AR with customizable parts.
@drysori Thanks. I’m not sure about the “cheaper” part.
OOPS got my 10 round mags today June 1 from Midway
Got mine today too from the Mag Shack.
How does this compare to the Ruger 10/22
I might have to produce a comparison video.
You know how S&W always has performance versions of everything. Is it worth it to get the performance version of this rifle?
Not to me. Others might believe that it is.
@@hrfunk I bet the performance version has a metal safety. I'm joking here. Thanks for the video.
@kdcowboy9478 My pleasure.
With the CMMG 22 lr conversion bolt, I have to ask why? This may have been relevant when originally released but now just seems like too much compromise for a sheep in wolf’s clothing.
Personally, I don't care for the idea of running .22 LR ammo through an actual AR. The .22 ammo is notoriously dirty, and I would prefer to keep that fouling out of the gas tube. Once deposited there, the fouling is eventually going to migrate into the BCG when firing .556 Ammo. I'm not sure how long or how many rounds it would take before functioning problems occur, but I would just prefer to avoid the whole issue.
@@hrfunk not to go round d round but unless it’s corrosive, powder is powder… I do clean more after using 22lr period be a 22 firearm or conversion set up anyway.
Sorry, I wasn’t trying to start a debate. I was just explaining why I prefer a dedicated rimfire rifle. If you’re happy with the conversion unit, I wish you all the best.
TWIN Mad Bomber brothers !?
Probably raised by a single mother.
Did you ever try sticking a bag under the tail of your buttstock?
Yes. It doesn’t work well with the 25-round magazine.
Absolutely stupid that s&w made the magazine well smaller! So now lower is useless for any other builds
Complete fell.!!
I kind of get why they didn’t want the poly lower to be compatible with a standard upper. Somewhere out there is the guy who would try to run it with a .50 Beowulf.
Speaking of s&w dad had a nickel with pearl handle .32 break top hammerless Saturday night special that a lowlife supposed friend stole off us that I never knew model of. Coolest pocket gun and would love to have it back. You have any models in yer head that it could’ve been?..thanks brother…matt🫲
Sounds like an old lemon squeezer. I would look on gunbroker
They made a few models that it could have been. It’s hard for me to say which one for sure.
@@scottdebruin3167 it was like those but don’t think exact one
