    Just switched to Octopus and used the referral link on the video. Always watch your videos and thank you for all the amazing information your provide people. Just picked up my ID.3 last week and I love it. You nearly had me in an E-Niro before I managed to find an ID.3 that someone had cancelled.

    Hi Andrew, glad to see your back making videos. We just got our e-Niro and I was about to move to Octopus when we found out we were eligible for 5k free miles through edf when we moved to their go electric tariff & leased the car from DriveElectric. We are now on cheaper electric in the house & free electric for the car 😀 I will look at Octopus again next year, so thanks for the video & look after yourself, cheers Tony

    I’m also with Octopus but I’m on their GO tariff. The reason is we have solar panels and a Powerwall as well as a Kona. We’ve found the GO tariff best as we only draw power at night between the hours o 00-30 & 04-30. At 5 p per kWh including VAT. with the Powerwall even in the winter we still only draw power at those times and in the summer draw nothing as the solar panels supply all our needs cooking, hot water, and 🚙

    Hope you are better. I have the same meter as you, the Landis&Gyr E470 and to get the correct readings (I am Economy Seven 01.00 to 08.00) you have to read the meter, for the Economy 7 time, between the hours of 01.00-08.00. Octopus couldn’t tell me that. The main reading you can get anytime out of these hours. Thanks for the info. I have just emailed Octopus to see if I am on the best tariff because my day rate is 16.6p and the night rate is 9.65p and standing charge of 20.05p. p.s pick up my E Niro on Friday 31st. I have to admin, going Agile was the best thing I've done - it halved my power bill overnight - all I changed was to make sure that we didn't use the dishwasher/washer/dryer in peak hours. BTW, don't forget that as shown, all times are GMT (they don't change their apps to cope with summer time).

    Didn't know about your stroke, so all the best...looking well anyway.
    We were with Bulb, but began to feel that their packages favoured gas/electric and gas-only users. We had installed solar panels and a Powerwall a couple of years ago, and took a gamble on future smart energy innovations, ripping out the oil burner and going 100% electric.
    We're now also with Octopus, and when the smart meter is installed next month, will be trialing yet another energy package, which is ostensibly what we were hoping would materialise, and are very excited about it...the cost of going pure electric is frightening, and we're hoping this will bring energy costs back to the realms of 'normality'. ;)
    I'll report back with details when we experience it in action.

    Hi Andy, glad to see you’re back, best wishes to you...Alex moved into a flat that has storage heaters and he’s going to use Octopus Go so he can charge up during the winter at 5p, he’s wondering if the Agile tariff might go up and down with wholesale prices and end up with peaks nullifying the troughs so to speak

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Geoff! I think Go would be better for Alex as it’s consistent, which is better for storage heaters really. Good point about the Agile tariff going up and down. It may be better for electric car drivers who can take advantage of the electricity being cheaper during the night, which will always be the case - whatever the average wholesale price.

    • @thumper1747

      Andrew Till / Mr. EV Hi Andy, had an electrician here today as I’m looking into the feasibility of fitting a Powerwall here at Newitt (block of 36 luxury apartments), largely to take advantage of 5p per kWh overnight and reduce communal energy costs (currently £5pa). Reckon I can reduce consumption costs by two thirds with power to spare and recover capital costs over three years...going to be a useful test

    I use Octopus Agile in conjunction with the EV.energy app. Even with a non smart wall charger I can take full advantage of any price plunge and restrict my tariff to below 0p and effectively smart charge my EV.
    We also cook before 16.00hrs daily to avoid the high tariff period between 16.00 & 19.00hrs. Works really well.

    The in house monitor unfortunately does not display the Go tariff either, it try’s but never makes it. The energy usage shown is correct just not the off peak rate. The smart meter itself records peak, off peak and solar export as well if you have panels. Just press the metre button to scroll through the readings. 👍

  • @colinphillipson4830
    @colinphillipson4830 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sorry to hear about your mini stroke, hope you recover quickly.
    I've been with Octopus Go for a year but they could only install their Secure v1 smart meters (already had v1 smart meters but as we know are not compatible when you switch suppliers) in my area about 4 month later. The rates are good but I've had to constantly ask them to align both my electric and gas billing and the electric was never billed until you call them to do so when your account balance is very high due to no billing. After about 4 email requests about this they've just successfully sent one bill showing both electric and gas. Sadly this seems to be their only Achilles heel in an otherwise great service.
    I've considered Agile and enquired for their Ohme cable at £199 but sadly I have a smart wall box with a tethered cable and it's only designed for a socket version like your wall box. Their 3 pin version isn't an option worth considering. If only they could design an intelligent adaptor from the tethered plug?

    Glad you are back, must have been a shock when you are a young fit man.
    I got my smart meter by accident with EON, I did not realise when I chose their tarriff that I had agreed to it. Never look at it after the first week.
    I will look at Octopus, wonder if the eon smart meter will transfer across.

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly not - it may be one of the old SMETS1 meters you have which are tied to the network, although if you move to Octopus they would install a new smart meter for free if needed.

    Snap. We have had our meters changed over today, but I'm with Bulb. I believe Bulb have EV drivers testing a new tariff, not too sure when it will go live. Haven't got an EV yet, but I have test drove a Kia Soul, had a look at a Tesla, which I have kicked into touch and I'm due a test drive with the Polester 2 on August 21st. Also hoping to test the ID3 out, whenever that maybe, but hoping to have an EV by March next year. Good to see you are nearly back to good health.

    Great you're back Asbestos Boy! I note though that the meter that they removed also looked like a smart meter . It looks the same as my smart meter (currently with Scottish Power), we've had it for some years now so maybe it's so old that Octopus (or others) couldn't use it? Did they comment on your old meter having any "smartness" ?

    • @MrCalnadrak
      @MrCalnadrak 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, here’s the geeky bit. Many energy companies started rolling out Smart meters a few years back that were 1st generation (SMETS1). These were only smart with the company who installed them and were designed to send meter read data to the company but nothing else. Now companies have to install the 2nd generation (SMETS2) or upgrade the software to make the old ones ‘stay smart’. These new SMETS2 meters also allow for half-hourly reads, which mean they lend themselves to time of use tariffs. It may be possible to get an existing SMETS1 meter upgraded, but it’s probably easier to get a new SMETS2 installed instead

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Erik! They didn’t mention it explicitly, but they do say on the website about needing a SMETS2/“Secure” meter which I knew I didn’t have because that was the reason Bulb took me off their beta smart tariff initially.

    When deciding on the best provider / tariff it is important to calculate your total domestic electricity costs. If you have an overnight tariff at a reduced price you are likely to pay a higher than ‘market’ rate during the day. In my case it was ‘cheaper’ overall to have the standard Octopus rate rather than the reduced overnight rate for car charging (based on charging at home to cover 10,000 miles of driving per year). Worth doing some sums before deciding.

    Also managed to get British gas to install a smets2 on a property we are renovating (had a broken meter when we took ownership) and booked in octopus for the 5th Nov to swap our own out. I have been on octopus go for a year and just rolled over to another tariff and then gone back to Go for another year, however the in house display stopped working 3 months ago (no data) even though I moved it to within 1 m of the meter, then it started working again (after 2 months) but only displays the gas usage. My online account shows the gas and electric meter readings per 24 hours but the electric has not updated from the 24/04/20 I have reported this but not much joy with them in sorting it. Not been billed by them for electric over the last 6 months. Hope your experience with them is better than mine. Sorry to hear of the mini stroke take your time and stay safe.

    Been on a waiting list for a smart meter for years, British Gas attempted a SMETS1 install about 2016 but removed it the same day.
    SMETS2 rollout in North of England and Scotland is not going well. Smart meter installation deemed "unlikely to be successful" and been moved to the back of the queue.

I had a full blown stroke myself about 6 years ago. So I know it’s bloody scary when it happens I was lucky I got pretty much a full recovery. Just have to go for eye tests every year.

    Don't go with Octopus, they suck!! It took 14 months to resolve my complaint!!! The problems were all caused by faulty SMART meters and arrogant staff who couldn't accept responsibility for anything. Even the managers at HQ were a dead loss. Despite listing all the issues and sending them to their CEO (TWICE), he couldn't even be bothered to reply. I guess you could call me stubborn, I dug my heals in and wouldn't let them off until all the problems were resolved. I now having my 'THIRD' SMART meter installed this week, I hope to god this one doesn't have a flat battery like the last one!! It's not something they tell you on the adverts telling you how fabulous SMART meters are, they're a pain in the arse, the batteries only last around 15 years or (6 months in my case) before you have to have the whole meter changed again, what a waste of resources!! So much for saving the planet!

    Folk should not expect Octopus to supply a smart meter anytime soon - unless you are a TH-cam Vloger of course, then you'll get to the top of the list. I've been rebuffed several times.
    'When engineers have availability in your area to get the smart meter installed, we will get in touch with a range of dates and time slots for you.
    At the moment there is not appointment's in your area.' Also, 'It's hard to say how long it will take for you to have a smart meter installed as it depends on the amount of available engineers in your area or, engineers available near to you.'
    They have not said if area is large - South West, or smaller Devon. They also referred me today to a 2019 blog from Greg Jackson CEO - which points to problems with the meter infrastructure, suggesting that it's not possible to install in some parts of the country. Not one of their happy customers.
    Perhaps it would be fairer to your viewers Andrew, to add some cautionary riders.

      Thanks very much for this comment, Michael. I’ll mention this in the follow-up.
      I appreciate I’ve been fortunate - they chased me to rebook the appointment, for instance. I don’t believe that’s due to me making videos though (I doubt they knew who I was at the beginning of the year when I first got the appointment), I think it just comes down to area.
      They should be much more transparent about what availability they have, someone’s place in the queue and the size of areas.

    The energy monitor does work ok when on go but when you migrate over to agile the internal monitor cannot read the half hourly readings so you do not have an accurate costing for agile however the kWh reading is still accurate.

    Something you didn't mention is that you'll be able to quickly work out if Agile IS cheaper for you with a weeks data near enough from the portal. As you get half hourly readings for a week from their API available, it's trivial to knock up a sheet to work out if Go or Agile best for you. Agile worked out best for us, as despite the slightly higher EV charge rates, our normal daytime use is actually reasonably high (~ 16kwh outside 4-7pm) with 2 kwh during peak. (This is without the car). The 2 expensive kwh are MORE than offset by the lower rates rest of day. Paying 7-8p a Kwh for 80% of your use really is a gamechanger -> and also allows me to consider charging the car during day before 4pm when needed as it's "only" slightly more than overnight. I'd also comment on Agile, mornings pre-8am have been cheaper in this region than the "go" period farely regularly.

    Amazing timing, with this video as i am getting a Tesla Powerwall 2 and upgrading my 4kw solar that is West facing and will be adding another to my East facing side of the roof. I am already with Octopus but will be swapping to their Agile tariff so interested to hear your views in the future. I started watching your channel due to the e-niro as I am looking to get one, but still have a year and a half of my PCP to go and the value offered for my car at the end of the term is almost the same as what they are offering now! So financially it would be stupid to swap it now. I do want an SUV style car due to a neck problem and it being much easier to get in and out of the car. Electric is the way forward, so can only join with powerwall 2 at this time and Tesla would be nice but more likely a Kia E-Niro 4+!

    Why is the Standing Charge so high?

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's something Octopus are quite vocal about. I don't think it's something they have much control over:
      www.current-news.co.uk/octopus-energy-slashes-egregious-standing-charges/
      “High standing charges are egregious,” said Greg Jackson, CEO and founder of Octopus Energy.
      “This £40m package is the beginning of our battle to bring them down. Far too many costs have been loaded onto standing charges - from grid and distribution charges to failed suppliers. These charges just make it more difficult for hard-pressed customers to save money through efficiency and Octopus is making a stand to change that.”

    Just a serious question, are non of you ev owners at all concerned about the possibility that a little further down the line having a smart car and a smart meter could mean that they will be able to dictate when you are able to charge and if you are able to charge, asking for a friend 😊

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not at all. I suppose there could be scenarios where the National Grid might want to stop people from charging (or charging at full power) to avoid blackouts, but it’s highly unlikely to ever effect anyone as people charge overnight when electricity is cheap (and plentiful). And if it meant avoiding blackouts, I think it’d be quite sensible anyway.
      There’d also be plenty of prior notice if they were going to do that as there is already when the grid capacity isn’t sufficient.
      Even if restrictions were placed, you could just charge using the normal 3-pin socket if you wanted as that can’t be controlled. Or go to a rapid charger somewhere if really desperate for a charge.
      But really I think it’s not a big deal and certainly not something I’d worry about.

    Sorry to hear about the stroke and I like that you have a super power now. Don't go out fighting crime just yet though! For the smart meter did you have to chase up to get it installed? It seems that people who email the CEO or complain and are getting fast tracked. I personally don't like this and wish they would just install people in the queue when it's their turn so I've not complained and I'm here sat waiting patiently. I've been waiting since 7th February though so I'm going back to bulb I think. I don't like the "I'll fasttrack you becasue your complaining" attitude Octopus seem to have. It's a shame really.

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Andy! I didn’t have to chase, no. In fact, they chased me to get it rebooked after initially being cancelled. I don’t think it’s special treatment as I’d originally booked the appointment at the beginning of the year and I’m not sure I was on their radar as a TH-camr back then!
      I appreciate I’ve been one of the lucky ones - since posting this video I’ve heard many people moaning on Twitter about how they’ve heard nothing from Octopus yet or that they’ve had problems after installation.
      I certainly see your point and it’s a tricky one. I’m used to having to moan to companies on Twitter to get them to do something. I think it was the reason I initially set-up my account! It certainly shouldn’t be like that though.
      I really don’t know what’s better: a company like Bulb who are far less responsive/active on Twitter or Octopus who are so desperate to protect their reputation, they’ll do whatever they can for people who moan.
      I think Octopus should be more transparent about the way the waiting list works. Clearly they have more availability in some areas than others - hence why I was fortunate, I think - but they don’t seem to make that clear. Even if people were given a number so they knew their place in the queue, that would help.
      Good luck anyway! I liked Bulb and never had an issue (apart from the final bill taking three months!). From my experience both companies are head and shoulders above all the traditional suppliers!
