The Listening was dope as hell too
Little Brother collection is 100% HIPHOP certified.
Ive heard a lot of foreign exchange albums but I've never heard the minstrel show
@@billwang3720 Start with The Listening. That's their debut. I think it's even better than The Minstrel Show. The Foreign Exchange is a different group from Little Brother. .The Foreign Exchange consists of Phonte and Nicolay, a producer from France. They made their first album via email only. I'm not sure if they even met in person yet.. They probably have by now, but that was their gimmick, the fact that on their first collaboration, they never met and only exchanged vocals and tracks through email. Little Brother is Phonte, Pooh and 9th Wonder. But 9th Wonder apparently left the group. Don't know if he's coming back. They actually broke up for real, all three of them, but after Phife of A Tribe Called Quest died, Te and Pooh reconciled, but they couldn't get 9th to come along. Their last album, May the Lord Watch, only consisted of Te and Pooh, with various producers. That's their brief history.
These guys were apart of the second gold Era of real hiphop
Facts. Raised a LOT of pure hip hop and ACTUAL art. 04-08 was a GENUINE TIME! Then for ME in my area, Nipsey came on the back end of that.

Absolutely

Man I fast forward to the interview every time his music play.
Most slept on interview on Math Hoffa, view should be in 6 figures. Little brother legendary
In all fairness, this video just dropped 4 hours ago.
I'm sure it'll reach 6 figures+ in time.
So true
Agreed. Math wasn't there for this one unfortunately. He definitely missed one of MEO's best ever.
Top comment.
Been a fan of LB since Chitlin Circuit 1.5. Please watch their documentary "May The Lord Watch" when y'all can. It's fucken DOPE!
Man it’s crazy. We had a dorm room full of LB heads in Germany reppin hard in from 03 to 06. Damn way ahead of their time.
Phonte should definitely be mentioned in everyone's top ten lyricists list. From cadence, to rhyme patterns, to subject matter he is exceptional with it.
Speak for yourself. You don't speak for me...
@dealz5197 That's fine too. But I just don't believe you're able to list 10 lyricists that are better than Phonte.
You know how Black Thought is everyones favorite "underrated'.. I think Phonte is actually the one who deserves the title. Listen to his bars on Glory Glory.

Growing up to little brother in the early/mid 00s was amazing. The Minstrel Show is one of the best and one my favorite albums ever, "lovin it" and "not enough" 🙏🔥🔥🔥 man those songs were everything

Math Pulled a Classic with this interview LB are legends
Man, the interview we needed. Little Brother raised me. The Minstel show was a masterpiece
One of my favorite groups and the documentary was dope!! I did feel it was bit unfair to get upset about 9th working with Jay Z versus going on tour. I mean they asked him and he chose to work with J and Beyoncé to get the work in. The whole team benefited from that exposure. But I don’t think they could see it like that back then.
Well you want him to say no to Jay Z? Look at where he was at that time. He wasn’t making no big money at that time plus 9th’s girlfriend, who is his wife now, had kids and he was trying to figure things out while making a lil money here and there. She also left him and he wasn’t seeing his kids at the time. You gotta watch his podcast interview that he did recently where he actually spoke on his private life and what was going on at that time. He was broke sleeping on his friends couches and he haven’t had food in days. It’s more deeper than what you think. I can post the link on here.

@SoulOfTheSouth they had no issue with him working with Jay Z. The problem was they was touring and building a brotherhood while their families at home. 9th will sometimes show up and have his wife with him thinking it was a vacation. Look at the Charlemagne interview, 9th showed no interest and was damn near sleep . One foot in one foot out syndrome.
Slum village got mad at Jay Dee as well for pretty much the same thing, when in reality all that outside work got them features and looks from Tribe, Busta, Dogg Pound, The Roots etc. he was setting them boys up for success
Salute and bless Math another Dope interview I know I'm late watching this joint
oh this the interview i needed ❤
I love the Chitlin Circuit 1.5.
Love this podcast
Phonte is the 🐐. Just wanted to say that
Excellent to have them on. They were remarkable
I love Little Brother but they DO NOT explain what happened with 9th in the documentary! They said they went on tour and 9th got the call from Jay-Z, then they said they didn’t want him on tour because “he would fuck it up”. Then the tour for the Minstrel Show came around and they got mad at him for not being on tour after they didn’t want him on tour.
It really looks like Phonte and Pooh never wanted him in the group at all and the breakup was their fault.
They do explain; they said when it came time to tour, since he was working with Jay he only wanted to show up for a few dates and he wanted to bring his lady.
They ain’t wanna tour with somebody who was only halfway interested in being there at the time.
@@SKTheKid You’re mixing up two different situations. They said the FIRST time they went on tour, he went to work with Jay and wanted to meet up with them afterwards, but since they said they “built a camaraderie and were putting in the work” they didn’t want him to come. They said 9th would “fuck it up” because “he likes when people look up to him”.
Wtf? What kind of explanation is that? How can you say that about someone without hearing his point of view at all?
Then THEY didn’t want him on the 2nd tour for minstrel show because they already put in the work and had a team on the road from the 1st tour…but THEY banned 9th from coming the first time???
It was always Pooh and Phonte that didn’t want 9th on tour when he was willing to come out, but they didn’t want him because “he’s arrogant” and “will fuck up the tour”???
That’s such a one sided reason. There’s gotta be more to it.
@@lvernon9471Yeah I've been wondering the same. Even in this interview it seems like they were tap dancing around the question regarding 9th and Jay. If Pooh and Phonte had resentment, I would've rather them just admit that.
prolly doesn’t make sense when said aloud - they definitely put a black eye on the LB legacy for me, but i appreciate the 2 classics they created w 9th
Nobody could’ve told math his auto tune wasnt in the right key on the intro song? Let me engineer the next one
Great interview. I'm glad y'all did your research. I hate interviews where you just ask random questions without knowing any history.
Yall got Little Brother! Salute!
Dope interview, awesome documentary! What’s the track at the end of this interview? Thanks
They definitely made a huge impact in my taste for music. Opened my ears to that boom bap sound with cerebral lyrics

Nothing but Dope real emcees on that squad
Little brother! One of my favorite duos
one of my favorite duos!
Phonte is one of the best lyricist when it comes to rap/hiphop
Better question would be did they feel like 9th Wonder was consistently giving LB his grade A beats or did it ever feel like 9th was low key holding on to his best beats to give to the industry? Did they get the exclusive 1st listen of all 9th Wonder beats or maybe they heard a fire 9th Wonder beat on another artist album and be like "dam homie why you ain't play that one for us first!" Kind of petty, but I would've liked to hear their answers.
In LB's documentary, Phonte expressed how frustrating it was when 9th (a trained musician with talent in playing instruments) didn't use instrumentation in his beats. LB got to a point in their careers where they were working with other producers who did use instrumentation. So when 9th wanted to produce the last LB album alone, he and Phonte bumped heads on bringing other producers to the fold. I just wish 9th would publicly express his take sonwe can hear his side
He made jay-z music on the spot when asked.
ok math! little brother!!!!
Most underrated hip hop group of all time.
Durham NC. .. come visit & you will understand betta...
One of the things I took away from the Little Brother documentary was that Phonte & Pooh were real friends while 9th was ultimately a business associate at the beginning of their journey. I just can't understand why Pooh & Phonte could make up but not 9th.

Same!
I love pooh!! He seem like a a cool brother
I was wondering about that
to me, little brother is really about phonte. the other two were cool complementary pieces. 9th's beats were good enough but not that unique...the references were too obvious (primo, dilla, pete rock), to the point where you can even hear him re-sampling their drum kits (listen to the drum kit on "whatever you say" and "come get it" by dilla and elzhi)...they always seemed like next gen slum village but without the same level of originality. but i always loved phonte as a rapper.
Phonte is one of the most underrated MCs ever
One of my favorite teams right here I dig the entire Justus league
Little Brother is one of the greats. With an in house super producer.
Only cats missing from this interview is the other three members of little brother Chaundon ,Median and L.E.G.A.C.Y
They were part of The Justus League. Not Little Brother

7:28: loved how the podcast host stopped his other host from talking to let the guests speak.
Health is wealth.
Phonte in my top 10 of favorite rappers
Yup 💪🏼
I saw the doc and Phonte mentioned that 9th wonder is not a group kind of individual. He thinks very highly of himself and doesn’t talk a whole lot so he’s either stuck up or he seems stuck up when in a room with others. Either way he wasn’t interested in coexisting with the group as a regular person With equal say and that doesn’t work for a group. Ninth is more of a send you the beat producer, and they wanted someone who they could vibe with.
Lb sounds best on 9th beats
“4 pauses” ROFL
The NC3 need to get together and do it one more time🌍🔥🎤🎵💿
The only thing I feel like could've fixed the 9th situation is for him to MAKE SURE that LB got a feature on Jay's album. I feel like Kanye did it with BlackStar on the Get By remix and other pieces. Collaboration is the key to keeping the culture alive.
9th didn’t have that kind of pull. That was his first major look. That was Jay’s retirement album at the time. How’s 9th gonna “make sure” LB is on the album? What’s he gonna do?

The documentary is cool. But it kinda reminds me of the Fab5 30 for 30. The story is not complete without Chris Webber. LBs story is not complete without 9th Wonder's participation....
I mentioned on their ig post about celebrating 20 years of the listening that respectfully, 9th should be a part of that and to put their differences aside for that day.
