Hi SwitchUp Family - a couple of big reviews this week. If you missed Glen’s review of Shin Megami Tensei Vengeance check that out , this one is a remastered of the 3DS version of MOnster Hunter Stories. Let’s see how it holds up! Mark
So I played this on 3ds (and had well over 200 hours 😅) and this game was incredible. I didn’t know how they’d pull it off but man did they. I truly hope we get a 3rd game with underwater exploration/combat. If you like monster taming games, get this game and the second one if you haven’t played that as well.
Dude underwater exploration would be amazing plus bring back the elemental changes and colors during kinship skills! The switch 2 is gonna be stronger so no excuses lol I need my water velocidrome!
I've been a Monster Hunter fan since Tri (Wii), but have never played this MH: Stories game. I bought it for my daughter on 3DS when it came out, and she loved it! She learned so much, too, that she has been coaching me on monsters behavior in the regular MH games, ha ha ha! Later, she bought for herself a copy of MH: Stories 2 AND a copy of MH: Rise + Sunbreak, and we've been hunting together since then. Good times!
This game had the best amiibos which are now considered rare items and out of stock from retail stores. You've have to spend a lot in the 2nd hand market to get them.
I got those amiibos on an impulse buy when they came out. I use NfC amiibo cards, much cheaper for the same effect lol. And yes I have not opened them.
So excited to pick up my copy tomorrow. Im just hoping I don't get rained out; we've had some heavy storms in Florida. Fun fact, the US also got a physical release as a double pack! MHS 1 is in cartridge and they included 2 as a code.
I don't wanna here it😂, I'm in florida too and the high is like 96 today....I wish we were getting those storms. It's been miserable here already and it's only early june
@benpardoe2425 I think so. I was able to order mine through gamestop, and amazon also lists it here. Play Asia is probably your best bet, but that copy is only MHS 1, I believe.
I loved MH Stories 2, its really underrated. I got about 150 hours and I enjoyed every second of it. Cant wait to get my hands on this one, bought a physical copy from Playasia.
The speed at which I clicked on this video!! lol Your channel is where I decide if I will enjoy/buy a game. So pumped for this one and the 2nd in the series!! Great review. Thanks for all you do! 😊
Of course you guys have a review of the next game I am excited for. You know me so well, haha!! Thank you for the review, I am pumped for this one tomorrow. 🎉
Really appreciate the review. I've been on the fence about this one. Looking at the review, I think I'll hold off. I never fully completed MH Stories 2, so if I want to scratch that itch I feel like that's the better game. Plus, with so many other releases this month... well, yeah. This will probably be a "wait for a sale, if I buy it at all" game. Thanks for saving me some cash.
I’ve had this one pre-ordered since I enjoyed a playthrough on mobile several years ago and was excited for what additions were shown and spoken of ahead of release. I also think it’s very fairly priced, but I’d like to see what Mark and Glen have to say about it before I start my playthrough on Nintendo Switch. I also have Monster Hunter Stories 2 on Switch, so I’m planning to finish a playthrough of this game on Switch, then continue where I left off in Monster Hunter Stories 2.
I've played it on the 3DS and mobile, then I got MHS2 for Switch. This week I started a new playthrough with other profile, stopping right at the point we met someone from MHS. I'll go back to it after finishing the remaster, to get most of returning characters stories and feels. This game was gold for me.
I have at minimum 200 hours from the 3ds version so I’m hype to play this again. I just wished we could’ve somehow transfer our mons from the 3ds version to this game. I have a lot of eggs and dlc mons that I never used before. Hopefully the third game can somehow make that work.
Also I totally agree with the camera changes you suggested. MHS2 has the same issues and not only does it make playing unconfortable but it also makes it seems as if the fps constantly drop.
Great review and great video as always! Somehow I was completely unaware of this game and it looks pretty good! I'll probably wait until it goes on sale or i have a little more eshop coins to give a little discount. Just too big of a backlog currently that i can't justify grabbing it at the moment
When you said you can change the X/Y axis you have no idea what that means to me, a lot of games nowadays do not offer the ability to change the X axis and that is how I prefer to play. Thanks for letting me know I am def picking this up!
One thing he forgets to mention is that this version includes the free postgame dlc that was never released outside of Japan, such as getting access to elder dragon monsties.
I loved, literally loved MH stories on the 3DS, enjoyed countless hours of gameplay and conquered everything the game had to offer! Unfortunately I don’t see any new addition to the “remastered version” to make me want to buy the game full price again. Anyway I also recommend this game 110% to anyone that hasn’t played it yet!
As a veteran of both the series & RPGs, this seems right up my alley. Definitely getting when I have the money. And whatever problems it has, it's a 1000 percent better than that "remaster" of Tales of Symphonia Bandai Namco had the gall charge $40 for last year.
What I love most about this game (3ds version anyway) is that you actually learn how the monsters act and while that is not strictly necessary it feels so cool when you go from no chance to total obliteration.
I’m played this on 3ds and again on my Samsung tablet. NOTHING and I mean nothing will change my excitement over this games release. I genuinely love this series and have happily sunk hundreds of hours into and plan to do so again. I cannot wait for tomorrow!!!
I've always wanted to try a Monster Hunter game but have been intimidated by them. This seems like the perfect one to try first with its more limited scope and linear story. Price isn't too bad either. Thanks for the review!
This art style reminds me of rune factory I want to pick up a non digital copy but I’ll have to see we have Smt v coming up and right now I’m playing the trails games so yeah it’s not a good time 😅
I'm really looking forward to taking on the Tower of Illusion, which I still had not reached the top of yet on the 3DS but it was so much fun trying to unlock the next set of levels! Oroshi Kirin you will be mine! I have also learned a lot more since then. I didn't even know about amulets until 2 came out.
I dont know if a day one patch changed things but my physical version runs way more at 60 than 40 especially combat. I enjoy the game way more than MHS2 because it runs great and resolution is clean, no blurry outlines/aliasing. Just an amazin work they did, environments did age but monsters/characters have clearly been redone. worth every penny
totally forgot this one was even coming out. Here in the states it has a physical release as Monster Hunter Stories collection with both 1&2 (though it appears 2 is just a download code and not on the cart) Of course it would come out the same day as SMT V Vengeance!
I've played all the traditional Monster Hunter games since Unite released on the PSP. My kids have played this on their 3DS and the sequel on switch and I'm super tempted to actually give these a try.
Great review as always, can't wait to play this. Too bad about Nintendo-exclusive content, but hopefully they'll add it to the Switch version down the line as free DLC or something.
Thank you for the review! I've played it first time on mobile and it was a relatively dreadful experience but I absolutely loved the game. I'm so excited to play it on switch now!
Not sure about MH stories, might play the 2nd one's demo to see if it appeals and if so maybe both might be worth investing in. Thanks for the review SwitchUp!
@@Specs89-ob1rn Ah dang it, please say at least the school uniform is still there. Well, the at least gave us Simone's clothes, the sweetheart's clothes, and scrivener clothes as well.
I discovered this series with the sequel on the Switch and thought it was super fun and a nice chill game. I’m excited the first one is more of the same!! 🥳
You forgot to mention (or didn't realize) that if you find all 100 poogie pigs, you'll be rewarded with your own unique as a monster pal for combat. It's not strong per se, but it's the fastest for map travel!
Stories games are imo in the same tier as Monster Hunter World. I beat Stories 1 & 2 and had such a great time. I also got to end game on MH World. I actually purchased a 3ds just to play monster hunter stories. Couldn't get into rise as much or any other monster hunter game really. I don't think this remake warrants another play through if you already beat it but people that haven't played it should 100% get this!
I adore this series and already preordered it but I do wish we were getting a physical copy in the US. I know they’re doing a double release physical of 1 and 2, but I’m not paying $60 for one new game and one I already own. I did see a region free physical of MHS 1 on playasia but I’m not waiting for it to get shipped.
Had this game on 3ds and loved it. The HD version that hit mobile is not compatible with the device I have (who knows if it'll get a fix), so a Switch version is up my alley.
@@SwitchUpYtI’ve made my decision - I’m getting it. I have about 20 games in my backlog and a following 30 in my wish list 😂. This looks too good to miss

This game doesn't have a lot of polygons or high-res textures but still looks better than Pokemon SV, which I think shows what Game Freak needs most is good art direction.
I love your content and yes I started watching your channel because of Zelda (BoTW) content. I’d love to see you work on some other games in the same genre and style though. I’d like to see you do a play through of Immortals Fenyx Rising. Also, I would be happy to watch videos of non-nintendo switch games if you have other gaming systems or even PC / Mac / iOS / iPadOS.
Looks nice, if a little light and fluffy... To be honest, watching the combat just made me want to play Xenoblade 3 again. But I'll wait for Marks review (!)
I have no proof of this, but seeing as the remake isn't getting a physical edition, it's probably just going to be the second game physically and the first one digital
I absolutely loved MH Stories 2. But it looks like it is very similar to this one. Is there any difference between the two, does anyone know? I dont want to play a virtually identical version of MH 2...
If I haven’t played any of the 2 is it recommended to play the first or second one? Which one is considered better? Tbh at most I would have time to play of them.
I would personally recommend the first one. The story is better and the combat feels more complex. I also prefer the first one's endgame tower over the second one's Elder Lair. @@carlpieraccini2088 You are thinking of monster hunter 3U. There is no bear boss in Tri.
As a Pokemon and Monster Hunter fan, this is a must have and fantastic series. Cannot wait to replay!
Definitely - what do you think of the price? I thought it was quite reasonable! Mark
The second in this series was such a unexpected joy that I even preferred it to Monster Hunter Rise.
