This is not a paid promo (as it may seem since most of the products in the video are purchased from Cafune.ca). We just wanted to share what we've acquired over time and from where. The larger glass coffee cup is not a Kruve, but a Kinto brand. All links to products are in the description area. Hope you all enjoy this video :)
Your video was one of the reasons I bought a Robot. Now I have to get a nanofoamer to make cortados. I also agree with the rabbit hole of espresso. The nice thing about the robot is you can take a very scientific approach, or just pull a shot without worrying too much and it is still so good.
I use my Robot every day since I got it in September of 2021. I have a Niche Zero to grind and use a 50 micron mesh puck screen from Shades of Coffee instead of the Cafelat screen and paper. The screen seems to work really well and I don't get channeling. The Nanofoamer works great and is a nice alternative to a stovetop steamer. Thanks for the update, your videos are so nice to watch.
Love the content and warmth of the personality and interaction. May I suggest not panning the audio from the two mics hard left and right? It creates very unnatural separation, especially when listening with earbuds/headphones. Because you are quite close together, the brain expects to hear only a slight change in the stereo image as each of you speaks, but it's confusing when it hears such a drastic one. Because your room is somewhat reverberant - though not problematically so - it means when one of you is talking, one of the listener's ears hears 100% of the source audio while the other only hears the room reverb of the voice... an unusual effect indeed listener's further ear hears only the room reverberation being picked up by the other mic... an odd effect indeed.
Really glad you enjoyed the video. For this particular one we had just upgraded our mic system and editing program. We didn’t realize the audio was recorded on split mode and since the editing program was new, couldn’t figure out how to merge it together. Videos that came after don’t have the same audio issue. Was a learning curve! But we learn from our mistakes 😁.
There definitely is a lot of love for this little guy 😁 it’s compact enough that should be easy to take on a camping trip. Hope you enjoy your Cafelat as much as we do - Nadia and Rob
Hey Nadia and Rob great video as always. I am having a difficult time finding women using the robot to make espresso. Most all the videos I’ve found are men and some of them look like they’re really struggling to get enough bars of pressure to make espresso. Because of this, I have been considering other manual machines, especially that Kazak Rota 2 because of the mechanism it uses for pressure. So, I would love to see Nadia make her morning coffee. I am taller than Nadia (5’9”), but I think much older (69). I do lift weights, row, and cycle 6 days a week, but I do not want a machine that I have to count on working out to be able to use. Thanks for all your content!
Wow, that's an impressive workout schedule for any age! Nadia uses a combination of her arms and then uses her thumbs around the legs to get the last bit of pull. You also don't need thta much pressure to create great espresso. The inventor of the Robot suggests 6-8 bars of pressure, which is quite easy to accomplish. The Rota looks like a good machine as well, though we haven't tried it. We'll shoot a short of Nadia's coffee routine and post it soon.
@@NadiaandRob thanks Rob and Nadia. I subscribed so I will watch for a notification. I think a video like this would help other women with the decision also.
Odd isn't it how a little retro green delightful machine can change up one's mornings to something so thoroughly pleasurable . Your video resonates absolutely with my own experience . Here too we have selected out a small scale and have also decided on Ethiopian green beans from a local store which get themselves " roasted " African style in glass lid topped frying pan ( both hands gripping the handle pointed toward one's self ) and shaken ( towards and then away from oneself ) back and forth every few seconds till medium roasted . A Hamilton Beach " Custom Grind " grinder on the longest cycle ( twice ) and gently shaken throughout is also an affordable way to craft a god shot ❤ !
The scale is great and so is the customer service. I had one die on me about a year after, I emailed customer service and they sent me a new one out asap. Love the review!
The Left/Right splitting the audio between you two is neat, but personally i'd recommend overlapping it some. Its a bit distracting while trying to listen/watch. Just bought my own Robot, and ROK manual grinder. Cant wait to be going down the same path!
We’re trying out using Wireless Rode 2 lav mic’s so we can record our voices into one camera, but we noticed in post how it split our audio. Not sure how we’re feeling about it, but going to check if it’s possible to record and have it blend or we ensure that we stand together most of the time. Technology…. Can be so tricky sometimes lol. We hope you enjoy your Robot! We certainly do 😁
Thank you for your informative videos! Appreciate the advice. I wanted to clarify what basket do you recommend for this machine? Professional or pressurised? I love drinking just espresso or cuppacinnos.
Hi. Glad you enjoyed the video. The professional basket is for coffees that are ground fine enough for espresso. If you have a grinder that will grind fine enough, or you can buy custom ground coffee, use the professional basket…. You’ll get much better results. The pressurized basket if for coarse ground coffee… packaged coffee. Not the best option, but it will yield espresso-like coffee. As you can see in the video, we don’t use the splitter bottom…. The heavy metal attachment will require preheating…. Too much hassle! Enjoy!
Thank you so much! Thanks to your video I ordered a Robot from the folks at Cafune. I ordered a pressurised but now reading this have requested them to send me a professional basket! Hope they can make the change. Until I can invest in a good grinder, I will have to rely on custom grinded beans from local roasteries. Thank you again for your approachable videos!
So glad you enjoy our videos. We are so encouraged by the positive responses from folks like you. It really motivates us to keep making videos. Thank you.
Great Video! Just one small thing with the audio: I'm not a huge fan of having the stereo assigned to a person/mic. With headphones it's not as pleasant as it could be. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the videos, I came across your channel when researching the Robot. Your videos really provide a grounded sense of calm for me. I still haven't pulled the trigger on the Robot, but your video is getting me closer. Recently also came across another non-electric espresso maker called the Superkop, which I'm really tempted to get instead of the Robot. You should check it out! I feel like you would love the aesthetics.
Hi @Nadia and Rob, please make more coffee and tea content! I'm U.S. based. However, your videos encouraged my purchase of the Robot, Kinu M47 - Simplicity, and some other items from Cafuné Boutique! Justin provided 5-star service over email.
Thank you Brandon! We’re very flattered. Yes Justin at Cafune is a delight to deal with. We’ll definitely do more coffee and tea content. Thanks for your encouragement
Is this available with a standard group head that supports the usual portafilter? Can you get a tamper with a longer handle so you don't have to make all kinds of mods in order to be able to tamp your espresso grind at the bottom of the basket?
Love your videos. I feel like I just spent 30 minutes hanging out chatting with you about lovely things. Also weird that we’re all photographers. Have the same bluestar and enjoy beautiful tactile objects. Anyway.. thanks for sharing!
Thank you Brian! I guess we all become photographers because we enjoy beauty.. in a coffee maker. A stove. A landscape or a plate of food. Glad you enjoyed. Your comment inspires us to create more. Thanks. Nadia and Rob
Thank you for this. After watching your Cafelat Robot several times, I finally placed my order. Ordering the nanofoamer as well. (also make my own masala chai...don't worry, I will never call it chai tea) Love your videos.
Hi there my pressurised portafilter’s outter basket doesn’t latch on (I’ve followed all the instructions making sure the arms are up and gasket is properly put etc), and it’s brand new. Any tips?
Hmmm. Hard to tell what the problem is without seeing it. I can suggest two things. Try contacting Cafelat to see their response. You could also shoot a video and send me a link and I’ll see if I can figure it out. Hope that helps
Hi Rob & Nadia, love your video... i bought a Retro Green Robot after watching your video last year... Would u suggest to get Kinu Classic instead of Kinu Phoenix ?
Hi Shan Shan. So glad we inspired you! As far as the grinder, we’ve been very happy with the Kinu Phoenix. It hasn’t shown any signs of wear or age after more than a year of daily use. The mechanism is exactly the same as the Classic so the grinding results are the same. Justin @cafune recommended the Phoenix and I’ve been very happy. My one recommendation would be to buy the stainless steel grinds cup. The extra weight helps make the grinder less tippy and has a nice solid feel. Even with the upgraded grinds cup the Phoenix is still less expensive then the classic by a fair margin. Hope that helps! Enjoy!
Hi crazeme, I've not actually used the Commandante, but I did consider it when I was making my purchase. The big factors in favor of the Kinu are stepless adjustments that are easily accessed from the top of the grinder. The Robot is quite sensitive to minute grind changes, so we're often making changes of a fraction of a number, and they do impact the flavor. Since you are providing the "pressure" yourself, you can really feel the tiniest change in grind. We even find that over the course of one to two weeks with a batch of coffee, we're making little changes as the beans mature. That's why it's nice being able to adjust the grind very easily from the top... so no stray grinds on our fingers, or the kitchen counter. We also like that the handle is completely attached to the grinder, rather than lifting on and off, with the Commandante. That always struck me as a potential wear or fail point. So, those are the reasons we chose, and recommend the Kinu. Obviously, many others have selected the Commandante, and I'm sure it is a great grinder, but we really love our Kinu. I hope that helps... wow it seems I have a lot to say on the subject!
Hi I just have a quick question regarding the Robot, is it easy to clean the portafilter basket to do back to back shots? I have the Flair Signature and the funny thing about it is that everyone's complaint about it is the pre-heating, which is actually not a problem once you get used to it (I have it in boiling water in a pot). However, it is hard to do back to back shots and one of the main reason is that it's actually hard to clean the portafilter, coffee ground gets stuck in the portafiltter holes! and you need to brush it out which sometimes can be difficult and takes a long time. I'm just wondering if you had the same issues with the Robot? Thanks in advance!
Cleaning the robot is very easy. We just knock out the grounds and then a quick rinse under the tap. Very quick and easy. Back to back shots are no problem. And we really like that there’s no need to preheat at all.
Funny, I knew I'd get called out on that! I wish I could tell you that these are special containers made with UV filtering glass.... but I'd be lying. They're just regular Ikea glass containers... however thy do have a silicone seal. They sit under our cabinets, totally shielded from any direct sunlight, so not exposed to UV. Also, we don't keep much more than a few day's supply in these, so there's not much chance of degradation. (coffee doesn't last long in this household!) We do find that as the beans age a bit, we do have to adjust the grind settings to maintain a consistent pressure and draw time. We like that the Kinu Pheonix allows us to make small adjustments easily. But to answer your question, no we haven't detected any degradation due to UV exposure.
I am thinking of buying a robot but am concerned that it is too hard for a lady of slight build to be able to pull the arms down, I cannot find any videos that show this, what is your experience?
My wife Nadia is a lady of slight build and she uses the robot every morning with no problem. She does use her thumbs around the legs to help a bit and that works for her If you find it’s too hard to press down that’s an indication that your grind is too fine. Just adjust slightly and away you go. Enjoy!
@@NadiaandRob Thank you for that answer - it would be good to post a video with a lady using one, there must be more people like me wondering about this, have you tried the pressurised basket - is that any easier? I was thinking of starting out with this as I haven't a clue about grinds, beans and grinders plus grinders are so expensive on top of initial outlay unless you know of a suitable budget model, all seems a bit of a faff when you just want a cup of coffee during a working day, and its got to be loads better than my current aeropress brew!
love your videos! I was wondering what number/rotation do you use for your kinu grinder? I have both the kinu and robot and am trying to hone in my recipe.
Hi David, so glad you enjoy our videos! Thank you. We have the Kinu set around 1.5- 1.6…. So one full rotation from the contact point, plus another .5-.6 rotation. We’re using medium roast beans. We also make small adjustments to the grind as the beans age from fresh over 1-3 weeks. We’re both dosing 19-20 grams coffee and adding around 55-60 grams of water…. To yield just under 40 grams out of espresso…. So just less than 1:2 ratio. That seems to work for both of us… hope that helps you dial in your recipe!
I love the Fellow Stag Kettle but the peeling paint on the bottom is abysmal. I wish Fellow would fix this. Yes, it's just cosmetic but every detail matters.
