  • Located in North Portland and hugging the Columbia River, Portland's Kenton neighborhood encompasses a range of locally-owned eateries, curated shopping experiences, a thriving performing arts center and a rich historical background.
"Kenton is such a small little community. It feels like a small town in a bigger city and you have the advantages of both," says Karen McClelland, founder of Mantel, an eclectic home goods store hosting a mix of ceramics, jewelry and glass.
Part of Kenton was built on top of a World War II shipyard worker village called Vanport, which flooded over in the late 1940s, displaced over 20k workers and their families, and killed 15 people. The town was never rebuilt, but Vanport Mosaic, a community memory-activism center, keeps history alive, "What makes Kenton special as a neighborhood is that it, too, holds a variety of cultures and peoples," says Laveta Gilmore Jones, community organizer for Vanport Mosaic.
