It's crazy how people say the switch has been lacking in games. It's filled to the brim with games if you bother look beyond triple A games. My RPG backlog for the switch alone is crazy huge.
Who said it lacks games? I’m a filthy pirate so all my switch experience comes from yuzu but still, that console has like the most games, all genres, that I can ever remember. It’s like the Wii but with more variety and less percentage of shovelware
Switch doesn't have many GOOD games, is the problem. There's only 3 reasons to play on switch: you're a Nintendo kid, who loves everything Nintendo, and has owned their systems most of your life, so you like the style. You love traditional rpgs (turn based, story driven, simpler combat). There's a ton of those on switch. Or, you just want to play your other games, while on the go. Definitely the best aspect of the switch. I don't like modern Zelda or Mario, never liked Pokemon, and don't really care about story games anymore. Probably never would've bought a switch if not for my daughter, but she barely ever played it lol. I'm glad I did though, Fire emblem was a good time for awhile, Vigil: the longest night, and a couple unknown one offs. But switch doesn't have many memorable, original games, unless one of the above points apply.
Perfect timing for me, just got out of the hospital and will be mostly stuck in bed for weeks. Let's see if there's anything on there I haven't played yet or feel like replaying :) might give me some shopping inspiration.
You hit me with the first one on the list! I just finished Trails From Zero a week ago and started up Azure right after. Love the cast of characters in the Crossbell arc!
Cross bell arc has so far been my fav. I haven't finished CS4 yet. But the cast is too big imo. And i really don't care for the MC, but there are def good supporting. But cross bell had perfect pacing and flow to the story ntm the time you get w each character.
@@countryboyred you should start w cross bell arc. So trails from zero. While you could just hop into cold steel 1 and be mostly fine, the games bring back a lot of older characters and you get a nice nostalgia high from it. Plus w their being one over arching story throughout, it'd be best to start w crossbell. It's only on switch and PC. It performed great on the switch and the old school sprites are just nice. Hope you enjoy! It's a hell of a ride.
The 'popular' Nintendo games that even non-nintendo players were worked on by Monolith; BOTW and TOTK, Splatoon 2 and 3, and Animal Crossing. So I'm extremely shocked that Xenoblade Chronicles isn't on this JRPG list considering it's quite literally peak fiction and the best series to ever exist. (When it comes to Xenoblade I can't stop talking lol)
As for Trails im playing Crossbell Arc recently, Valkyria is something ive finished recently, and its really great game, and i want give another chance to Chrono Cross after mentioned updates.
Erick, thank you for recommending death end request 1 and 2. The story is crazy but I really like the battle system. Using the enemies as ping-pong balls is hilarious
God tier list Erick. Finally, some love for God Eater 3. God Eater 2 Rage Burst was still my favorite. As for my backlog on this list: Persona 3/4, Diofield, Tactics Ogre, .hack, DQ11, Valkyria Chronicles, and YS9.
I love Vesperia battle system. My only gripe about it is that bosses should never have access to overlimit like that again. Sometimes it's fine, and sometimes they abuse it to the point of using it in impossible situations. And overlimit right as the overlimit ends. Kind of kills the enjoyment to watch your characters get pelted by the same MA for the fifth time within 30 seconds. An exaggeration but they could actually do that if they wanted to. I don't know about future installments and if they fixed that or not as I haven't been able to get them. The only other Tales games I touched after Vesperia was Tales of World 2 and 3. I always wanted a chance to play Graces though.
10:55 I knew people didn't like it, but I figured there were more issues than just graphics. Thanks for setting the record straight. Great list, by the way!

I have Ys 8 (finished), Nier Automata and SMT 3 already. Honestly their is way too many games to get into. Wish I had the time and money. I forgot that I played "I am Setsuna" already as well. It's been a while though.
Valkyria Chronicles have now 15th Anniversary, and still no sign from Sega about this series is still alive or not. Unfortunately that means series is dead for good :(
I own 23 of the 25. I'm missing Fuga and Redemption Reapers (which I've never even heard of before this video). Excellent list, although I would have found a way to squeeze the Final Fantasy games on there, VII through XII.
Fuga Melodies of Steel is my favorite Videogame. I bought it in March 2022 and have played through it 13 times since. I am not quite as over the moon about the second game but its still really good in my book and I love the Characters in this one even more then in the first game. I played through it twice and I have unlocked the secret teaser fore the third game. I look foreward to my third playthrough where I try out things I learned in my new game plus play through in a normal playthrough.
The possible reason for Redemption Reapers going under the radar and/or didn't get bought/played is because it got bad reviews Day 1. I still want to get it but I will wait for a price drop. Not sure if you reviewed the game for the different outlook or not.
Valkyria Chronicles is freaking DOPE! Being a Fire Emblem fan I always wanted a tactical/action turn based RPG in this style and setting! So glad I got to discover this amazing series! Also I keep hearing good things about the Ys series but was kinda always put off by the dated and underwhelming looking graphics. Maybe I should also give it a try and bite the bullet just like I did with Valkyria Chronicles?
Because game is ekslusive on Switch. Exlusives on Switch, and PS4 (which is only 3-4 games now) doesnt count, because list is about JRPG's released on both consoles.

I know this will get lost in the comments, but could you potentially cover Eroge? Eroge was extremely important to the JRPG genre (and VN genre, YU-NO in particular essentially founding the major pillars of modern visual novels) and is where many large innovations come from. They deserve some respect put on their names for their rich history and their importance, and I think it would make an interesting video that may become among your most viewed.
i have to disagree with him but each to their own i feel like god eater is a different game than monster hunter god eater feels more like dark souls than monster hunter
@@SEEN01411 Interesting. That definitely helps so I don't get disappointed expecting one thing and then receiving something different. Whenever I look up videos of Godeater it reminds me more of Monster Hunter for several reasons. It looks like you basically accept a mission to kill a big bad monster with a huge health pool that encourages you team up with other people whereas Dark Souls bosses seem more solo friendly with less mechanics mostly that focus on dodging/stamina. God Eater looks like it has a bunch of mechanics including hitting specific "weak spots" and crafting like Monster Hunter. When you combine the mission structure with the clearly defined map in the corner and even a time limit it seems like everything revolves around making objectives repetitive but fast-paced and narrative obvious without the mysterious and vague parts you get from Dark Souls. So if you don't mind, is there anything in particular that makes it more like Dark Souls? Did you perhaps mean in a general sense like how people will often call games of different genres "the Dark Souls of the genre" to indicate it's crushingly hard?
Doesn't matter how much people recommend Persona 3-4-5 to me, I just can't get into those games, I don't know why! Maybe the protagonists or the style, especially 5! Gotta admit I only played the demo for Nier Automata when it came out, I liked it but wasn't impressed by it but I think I need to get that one! I still wonder how it's a RPG?!
I feel the same about the Persona games, and to be honest I find the first one and both versions of 2 on PSP way more appealing. I think those look cool, from what I've seen, even though people say they suck. I hope to try them out once I clear some of my backlog. Also, Nier Automata is a fantastic game, but I also don't think it's an RPG or even an Action RPG. I wish I could start a revolution to separate games like that and Ys from the RPG genre to protect decision-based RPGs from mainstream demands.
P5R also has a PS5 version. It's more than just the frame rate that's changed: some of the "shots" are "reframed," there are better visual effects in some places, the sound is noticeably punched up, and so on. It's worth the price, really, even if, like, you've sunk a couple hundred hours into the PS4 version. It's like seeing a favorite movie in an art house theater, after only watching it on home media for years. It's a different experience, and you'll understand when you experience it.
Surprised you listed the Diofield Chronicle... it got terrible reviews. I had a preorder of the collector's edition, and as soon as I saw some of the reviews, I canceled it. No regrets there... When he said God Eater is better than Monster Hunter, I knew he was a bad reviewer. God Eater is fun but lacks the polished gameplay and originality that MH has. MH is the OG and nothing has come close to being even half as good.
@@DSG0805 Yes the creators said even before the second game came out they want to make Fuga a trilogy. Did you not get the true ending of Fuga Melodies of Steel 2? Or meybe you have not played the game yet. The true ending has a post credit scene that teases that there is more to come. It would be a bad Cliffhanger to end the series with. And there is a secret teaser fore the third game you can unlock in the second game. That teaser is wild. Saying shit is going to hit the fan again seems to be a massive understatemant.
I've become fatigued and tired of turn-based combat. It is so tedious going through real time control then chop away into what now feels like a separate part of the game that is the turn based combat, esp random encounters - which is so annoying
@@BigBossCQCLegend Persona 1 and 2 need more, because gameplay is outdated, and PSP verions don't fixed all from originals. Hell, P1 PSP also removed orignal soundtrack. P3 FES is still fine version, and P3 you can play on all platforms, unlike P1 and P2 which are still only on PSX and PSP / PSV.
7:55 I don't know about that one. It has furries. Of all the internet communities, furries are notorious because they behaved so badly when the furries held a convention that the venue had to ban them from ever returning.
I dont know much about the furry Community but what had a Community to do with playing a game or not? I am the best example. I played and loved these games without knowing shit about the furry Community so why is this Community a factor when it comes to playing this game? Besides movies like the Kung Fu Panda Serie and Puss and Boots the last whish are extremly popular and they to have anthropomothic animals. Whats the problem with this one?
Yo man, what about us Xbox players? We need help finding good ones since there are so few of them on the console. I’ve bought all of the ones you have recommended in the past that are on Xbox. Y’s Origin is 🔥
not gonna be popular opinion but I don't think Valkyria 4 deserve to be on this list. like, there's many other game like Zelda BOW, Zelda TOTK, Xenoblade series, etc... antagonistsin valkyria 4, IMO is very poorly written. they don't have substance and feels very one dimensional as character. like why do the traitor (forgot his name) turn traitor again? iirc he knows the valkyira kid he want to save is a fucking core to the subs (I forgot if he already knew they're also atomic bomb "core") and still attacks with full force leading to one Subs to self destruct. in other words, some kid dead. that other kid could be the kid he want to save, what the heck! tank commander boss and Valkyria boss are kinda out of place too IMO. it's like watching soap opera unfolding. the mad scientist is just being mad scientist. Only saving grace is gameplay that they polish over time. grenadier in 4th is too OP though. Kinda like that playable character can die for real in 4th though. got 2 death by the end of my play. I haven't played 1st yet (installed, just need to find the motivation to), but 2nd and 3rd has much better story, moral, and antagonist than 4th even with their weakness (2nd game is too grindy and don't even mention class up system grind. 3rd I can't find fault except it never go west and only have English fan translation to cope with). anyway, thanks for making the list, will surely try out some of them.
Some of these are worth playing...................if you get it second hand/used. Unless you love censorship, better get the originals (like Chrono Cross) or play the japanese version (like P5R).
Apparently Redemption Reapers kinda sucks. Othercide is probably better. Haven't played RR myself but I think I watched MortismalGaming's review? Someone's, anyway. Apparently, it's not good. And Death End Re;Quest sucks. Played that one myself. Dropped it like half way through to get something more worth my time from GameFly. Maybe 2 is decent? But I'm not gonna play a sequel like that without beating the 1st game, and that wasn't good enough to continue. Also, this one is pure opinion and might not qualify because I'm not sure P3 is on PS4 but Persona 3 FES (which I got and played for free on my PS3) was better than what I've played in P4G so far. (I think I got about 40% of the way through and just never finished. I don't really like playing that kind of game without a controller but I have P4G on my PC and I kept switching between playing it and something on my PS4 at the time and was just never compelled to go back and finish 4. It's easily the worst of the 3 I've played, so far... since it's the only one I didn't finish. I mean, I beat 5 at least twice and P5R at least once, too. I Platinum'd both.) I think I heard P3P the worse PlayStation Portable version was coming to PC and PS4 or something? I'd definitely recommend 3 over 4, anyway. Though, like I said, it's kinda unfair since I didn't finish 4. But it's not entirely my fault if the characters and story weren't compelling enough to make me want to go back and finish the game.

It's a switch exclusive
Expecting Astral Chain at first place
Not that clunky, weird and old mess of crono cross
Put it on time stamp next time
Fuga needs a dual pack physical
I think releasing the whole trilogy in one physical package after the third game comes would be cooler.
@@sofaris576 is a third game happening?
@@DSG0805 Yes the creators said even before the second game came out they want to make Fuga a trilogy.
Did you not get the true ending of Fuga Melodies of Steel 2? Or meybe you have not played the game yet. The true ending has a post credit scene that teases that there is more to come. It would be a bad Cliffhanger to end the series with.
And there is a secret teaser fore the third game you can unlock in the second game.
That teaser is wild.
Saying shit is going to hit the fan again seems to be a massive understatemant.
@@sofaris576 have not played yet. Was holding out for a physical
Thank u so much i have many Jrpg games i can play on ps4 now(⌐■-■)
I've become fatigued and tired of turn-based combat. It is so tedious going through real time control then chop away into what now feels like a separate part of the game that is the turn based combat, esp random encounters - which is so annoying
You forgot ni no kuni 1 and 2!
So true
Hello backlog, it’s been awhile……….
Persona 3 is great but the pacing is terrible
Like in any modern Atlus games (P3-P5, SMT IV Apo, SMT V, Soul Hackers 2) except Radiant Historia and Catherine.
@@nr2676 Persona 5 Royal and 4 Golden have so much to do unlike 3
@@BigBossCQCLegend This does not change story pacing in P3-P5 is still abysmal due to calendar and filers (anime tropes)
@@nr2676persona 3 needs a remake to fixed the pacing issues and add more events to do like in Persona 5 Royal
@@BigBossCQCLegend Persona 1 and 2 need more, because gameplay is outdated, and PSP verions don't fixed all from originals. Hell, P1 PSP also removed orignal soundtrack. P3 FES is still fine version, and P3 you can play on all platforms, unlike P1 and P2 which are still only on PSX and PSP / PSV.
no xenoblade? 😢
nice!
These are games but they need badly a remake. Lol.
Re:Quest and good writing??
No. Just no. Pacing was god awful. I couldn't play for more than few hours.
But to each his own..
make a 30 min vid with no skips? bye
Some of these are worth playing...................if you get it second hand/used. Unless you love censorship, better get the originals (like Chrono Cross) or play the japanese version (like P5R).
OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH
I did *not* like The Alliance Alive. Dull, generic, with an uninteresting plot
