@@jordov9398 I haven't been able to play it properly. I have seen the trailers, let's plays and have tried playing it by other means. It looks so beautiful and I have been told the story is even better than the others in the franchise. One day, I will get to play this masterpiece.
I mean with all the love the series has gotten, a remaster of XBC X would be massive. A truly breathtaking game and more impressive than some of the other entries in some aspects (and I'm still only a few hours in!)
You know, seeing a list about action RPGs on Switch is kind of refreshing because I'm starting to get kind of burnt out on turn-based or strategy JRPGs on that system. I don't hate turn-based or strategy RPGs but I genuinely want a little bit more 3D action JRPGs to play on the Switch. It doesn't matter whether it's recent or a game from a few console generations ago.
You tried out this star ocean 2 remake yet? It's kinda like the very old 2d tales games but blew me away with how much there was to it. I like freedom in games and here you have a whole lot of choices from which party members you have to the skills you give to characters, if you experiment around you can even get endgame weapons in like the first 2 hours of the game lol
@@brotbrotsen1100 I've tried the demo out a bit but I haven't dedicated enough time for it yet to make me get really into it. Also, I'd like to finish up First Departure R before getting Second Story R. I'm 7-ish hours in that game and I hear that it's pretty short.
most of these titles are released on a much better console not to mention a computer instead. skip the switch port unless its the only console you own.
@@airiakizuki5592 I understand that completely and I knew what I was getting into when I got my Switch back in 2017. I was just thinking aloud with my comment because I sometimes find it jarring to see some these Japanese companies in not putting enough effort or variety in their games on the currently most successful system in their home country.
I'm actually in the middle of Dragon's Dogma right now and I'm liking it. I know a lot of people say it's a mashup of Skyrim, Monster Hunter and Dark Souls, but dare I say it's almost like if Monolith Soft made a medieval action JRPG with almost like a Xenoblade 3 party/class system, Monster Hunter elements, and a Dark Souls coat of paint. It has some barbs and burrs due to its age but once you get over that it's a surprising game that deserved more attention when it came out.
Honestly one of my favorite games of all-time. If you don't already know you might be pleased to learn there's a sequel coming out March 22nd next year. Don't think it's coming to Switch considering PS4 and that entire gen is being excluded from the available platforms (basically just new gen and PC).
I clicked on this video because of the algorithm, thinking "man, they better put Ys 8 in there, or else" and voila, Dana on the first seconds already. This is gonna be good. I can't vouch for the Switch version, since i've only played it on the ps4/ps5, but it's probably one of the best Ys games out there, and lives forever rent-free in my mind.
Im one of those who tends to play all sounds off quite often (family life) but I gotta say Nier: Automata had me stop every now and then just to listen to the game music. They're phenomenal and perfectly fit the game world. Xenoblade 3 comes very close on that department as well. Overall it's one of the greatest games for me ever.
Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana is my favorite action-JRPG. I found out it existed when I got my Switch and was looking for JRPGs I missed out on. It jumped into my top-3 as JRPGs immediately. Great story. Great characters. A little too much for the Switch to handle at times, but what's new?
The newest game in the series is coming to the west later this year and it looks so good. If you love Ys LoD then you’re bound to love the new entry as it looks to be going back to that island adventure vibe that LoD has.
While I really appreciate the list you've made and agree with it, saying "the greatest" or "all time favorite" to all of these games really watered down its meaning when it's coming from you
Not to pick at this, but isn’t the video just labeled “29 must own”. So the video is just him talking about the ones he would suggest are “must own” aka great purchases.
One game I didn't see on this list is Astlibra Revision, the definition of a hidden gem. It's a 2D side-scrolling action RPG. On the surface, it looks like one of those old 2D style games. But the story, combat, and characters are all great. I'm over 150 hours in and still addicted to this game. And what's really amazing is how this game was developed by one person after he couldn't find anything good while browsing, so he just said, "Fine, I'll make my own game."
I'd also add Tales of Symphonia to the list. I know it launched in a rough state, but almost everything wrong with the Switch version has been patched out. The graphics are a little darker than they should be, but adjusting the TV/Switch settings should make them fully vibrant and eye-popping again.
For the last 6 months I have been creating a list of Action RPGs I want to buy and play (it is my favorite genre). I played them both and honestly you have the same characters but the stories are different enough but still contain a few spoilers. In the end it doesn't really matter what you start with but i had more fun with warriors just wished it had the same or atleast nearly as much content as the first FE warriors. All of the Nintendo warriors games are pretty cool honestly
@@julianjuez oh i think it's extremely great, I actually didn't liked musou games at all until my wife gifted this to me on Christmas the year it released. Even recommend the DLCs since they add characters and content. But the thing is i like the grind to chill out after a long day, and there is a lot to grind there if you want to max out characters, like skills and the unique ultimate weapons. I think the biggest complain was the reuse of movesets for certain characters and the abundance of characters who use swords. But overall the combat is satisfying and i put in over 200 hours, i didn't finished every single thing but i was satisfied with it after that amount of time. The first hyrule warriors is another game i revisit every now and then since it has even more content, pretty sure i never finish it but these games are super chill for me.

Absolutely agree on BotW. I usually don't like completely open world. I like a little bit of structure but with BotW, I thoroughly enjoyed being able to go wherever I wanted and could spend hours just wandering around with no real objective. It really just felt like going back to my childhood where I played just to play and not so much to finish.
Ys Origin is really one of the best games I have ever played, I would recommend it but I am so far behind on any of these games. I could play Ys Origins over and over though.
I'm a huge fan of star ocean the 2nd story. Probably enough to finally get a switch. I already have a few games queued up from some of your prior recommendations (octopath 1/2, bravely default 2, etc). Will be adding the Ys games to the ever growing list too. 😅
Amazing list! I literally own all but one of these games. I don't know if it counts as an RPG, but you should try Akiba's Trip if you haven't. It's silly and fan service y but lots of fun!

Man thanks so much for vouching! Honestly the past couple of years have been a blast playing these games and being able to chat about them with you. Hope you’re doing well brother
Love to see Skyrim getting love, like you said it’s a rite of passage. Another one I feel should be an honorable mention is immortals fenyx rising. Definitely a BOTW clone but also was such a fun time in its own right
My favorite Action RPGs on the Switch so far are - Witcher 3 - Breath of the Wild - Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - Dusk Diver 2 - Indivisible (does that count?) - Ys 8 - Star Ocean Second Story R - Dying Light
I'll probably buy a few of these when they go on sale. Rather not pay full price for a side hustle Got a good deal on Valkyrie and shining refrain resonance for less than 20 dollars together Xenoblade is fun but story is so lacking and that sucks as the potential is there they have some good moments aside 2.
my only issue with Nier is that they call each chapter "ending", that led to a lot of people finishing Ending A and just quitting the game because they thought it was over
Final Fantasy XII gets so much unjustified hate. It fixed the problem of useless party members so well that the fix literally became something that people pointed to (wrongly, in my opinion) as a negative. It's still one of my absolute favorite Final Fantasy games.
I like the setting and the characters, think it's among the better FF games. Just have problems with the gambit system, i don't understand it to well and a quite a lot of missable stuff like powerful weapons which intimidates me a bit.
@@brotbrotsen1100This is curious, I already wish there was this gambit system in several new RPGs, you can make many combinations and gameplay variations when you learn how to use it
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch missing from this list is honestly criminal. I wouldn't necessarily say Action RPG fits as the best genre for that game, but considering the other games included on this list, Ni no Kuni definitely qualifies and deserves a spot here.
Love seeing NEO and Xenoblade on this list. If you're going to play xenoblade please play it in this order: XC1 XC1 Future Connect XC2 DLC - Torna the Golden Age XC2 XC3 XC3 DLC Future Redeemed The reason I recommend playing XC2 DLC Torna BEFORE playing XC2 is because of how poorly paced the story telling in XC2 is. There are a lot of really important characters to the plot, but the story pacing is horrendously bad and they do a horrible job of explaining why people matter, where and why, and when you experience those stories. HOWEVER you jump into Torna 1st, you are missing next to nothing in terms of plot. But all the plot from Torna is mandatory to truly understand and appreciate XC2's plot. If you just want to understand the characters and plot better sooner, play torna 1st then XC2.
Vesperia is easily my favorite Tales game, glad you gave it some love. Also a fan of the Y'S games myself. Falcom seems like the last great hope for quality JRPGs.
Ys Origins is a Prequel to the numbered Ys games in the same way that Far Cry Primal was a prequel to Far Cry 1-6. Ys Origins is a story regarding the collapse of the civilization of immortals, whom lived around the Ys’ Great Tree of Origin, and how they dealt with their world’s/civilization’s sudden collapse. What looked like the end of the world to them was just the beginning of a new era where the potential for life spread out all around their planet, but at the cost of losing their magic and other godlike traits. Sure enough, the main character was bullied for being unable to use magic, but in reality she was really the first true “human” to emerge. It’s sort of funny how little the Ys games actually care about Origins though, honestly.
I’m not surprised that the Nintendo switch is one of the greatest consoles of all time because it’s basically a PlayStation two that’s portable. And we all know how amazing the PS2 was!
Bought Ys origin on sale partially because of this video - it did not live up to expectations. Everything is in a single tower, there are no shops to buy gear, it’s just a few treasures per level and then a boss. I am playing on hard mode and the mobs are still easy, but the bosses take way too long. Abandoned it. Love Ys VII and just ordered Ys IX instead I hope that’s worth it.
I just watched a streamer playing Fate: Samurai Remnant today, and it looks really good. I don't know how well it runs on Switch, but maybe it's something you might be interested in.
The world has ended has fantastic art I love the look of it I had to grab the ds version too. Fate Extel the warriors game you shown I have wanted to grab that many times but haven’t yet. Takes of vesperia I have but haven’t played it yet ❤
I think you've forgotten CrossCode and Tunic (you put the Zelda games in this video, so Tunic earns its place too ^^). 😄 In fact, it's kinda hard to choose the "Action-RPG only" games because some other types are really really close (ie. some action-adventure and some metroidvania with RPG mechanics). I'd like to give an honorable mention to Pokemon Legends Arceus, more action-oriented (and still RPG) than the main serie games of the franchise. And like one of the comments said, the Switch REALLY needs XCX, the cherry on the Xenoblade cake.
I'm looking for an AA action JRPG game. I think it came out this year and it had a modern setting (similar to Astral Chain). You played as 2 different protagonists. Can you help me find it?
Trails of mana World ends with you Dust diver Star oceans all seem very interesting as I do like adventure games with level ups and equipment most in rpg. Sao maybe as I don't like sao but I'd like more non online solo games to play if the price is right. I've already played Xenoblade and tales of but those are very good and I recommend them.
Fantastic list here I definitely should dig into Ys8 been hearing so many good things about it. There some more games in your list I still gotta play myself but great video btw.
I definitely agree with a lot of the entries here. It sucks the Kingdom Hearts ports were handled so poorly - they could have been great additions to the Switch library.
Final Fantasy 12 is in a way both a turn-based game and an action-rpg, so is the first Ni no Kuni, I love them both. The switch definitely has a lot of RPGs in its roster, alright.
I played the original TWEWY and loved it, but I could not for the life of me finish the sequel. I got to the second week and started getting bored of the story, so I asked my friend who finished it about what to expect and I stopped then and there. Everybody has their cup of tea, so don't knock the game because I could get into it.
I really like Legend of Zelda breath of the wild but the weapon durability us a huge turn off for me. I hate that once it hits 0 it breaks and you can't repair it. It ruins the fun for me. I wouldn't mind going into town or some other alternative to repair. But it makes me want to use the inferior weapons all the time just incase I don't find another decent weapon
Get the master sword 🗡️ dumb ass, you know the most OP sword in the game. I'm playing totk, you can get the master sword right away simply by having two rows of stamina by getting enough shrines worth to upgrade stamina. As for botw you can get the master sword 🗡️ by cooking meals that up your health temporarily. You realize that today's games no longer hand hold you. Just look at Elden ring or dark souls. Once you get the master sword you're good for the rest of the game. But nooooo it's too hard to put in time to get enough Hart's in botw or stamina in totk. Finally literally buy amiibos or amiibo cards which are cheaper. You can scan them once a day and get durable weapons daily. Your complaint is a non issue only a noob complains about. Literally buy amiibos and get the same weapons daily if the break. There's no limit to how many you can scan
I avoided Dragon Dogma when it come out because I honestly don't like western setting rpg, only recently played it because I saw the DD2 trailer and it was amazing, highly recommends anyone to play DD. I like that you bundle all xenoblade together otherwise it would just be them for top 10, truly worth it to buy a switch just to play xenoblade.
If you haven't tried them yet, you should try both Fate/Extella, those two are my favorite musou/warriors games, the gameplay is far faster than other warrior games and they are really fun games, specially if you like the Fate series.
29:25 telling us this section of gems just need to be tried is fine, but don't forget we can't simply "just try" switch games unless we "just buy" them first. good list none the less. it pays to go back and watch a channels older videos on hidden gems because most times they're still hidden and still worth at least putting them on your wishlist.
Ys origins is a great game but goddamn that final boss is rough. Trials of mana is so fun. The combat is super addictive. Its hard to put down and you set out with 3 characters. You can finish it with them and play it through again with all different characters that play completely different.
Great list! Can't disagree with any games here, they are all great! Was Kingdom Hearts not in consideration, due to it being a weird cloud streaming game? Is not ideal, but it can "technically" be played on the switch.
I love every game on this list, though I haven't played the Zelda sequel yet (backlogged). The Switch has so many RPGs its insane. I have rarely come across one I don't like as a whole, though I might find things I don't like about them.

I like a little bit of structure but with BotW, I thoroughly enjoyed being able to go wherever I wanted and could spend hours just wandering around with no real objective. It really just felt like going back to my childhood where I played just to play and not so much to finish.
Great list with some takeaways.
Glad you think so!
Ys Origin is really one of the best games I have ever played, I would recommend it but I am so far behind on any of these games. I could play Ys Origins over and over though.
It's so good! I don't blame you!
Always glad to see Ys Origin mentioned! One of the best action RPGs out there!
Couldn't agree more!
I am right in the process of buying stuff for Christmas that helps
Thank you ^^
Merry Christmas!!!🎄🎁
@@HallowedBeThyGame merry christmas to you too and nice holidays ^^
I'm a huge fan of star ocean the 2nd story. Probably enough to finally get a switch. I already have a few games queued up from some of your prior recommendations (octopath 1/2, bravely default 2, etc). Will be adding the Ys games to the ever growing list too. 😅
That's excellent! Hope you enjoy the Ys games!
From what I've played so far (mainly origins and oath in felghana on steam), they're fantastic games 👍
I'm currently halfway through week 2 of neo: the world ends with you. It's bloody amazing, more people need to buy it so we can get another game
Amazing list! I literally own all but one of these games.
I don't know if it counts as an RPG, but you should try Akiba's Trip if you haven't. It's silly and fan service y but lots of fun!
I love Akiba's Trip! Fantastic shoutout!
Oh wow, thanks internet reviewer, I had no idea about The Legend of Zelda on a Nintendo console! What a useful suggestion!
If that surprised you just wait till I tell you about this game where you play as a plumber.
Great list
Excellent list! I’ve played about half, and agree with your assessment! The other half… has just ballooned my want list!
Thanks so much! Hope you have an incredible week!
I love action RPG ❤ the switch is amazing ❤ I got ys on my vita switch n psp and have yet to start it I want too so badly but by the time I get to my gaming time it’s 11ish pm or midnight lol and then I choose a cozy game lol 😂 or finish my paper Mario or go on my vita and play my big sister or into the woods on the switch lol
Lets play a game, take a shot everytime you hear zenith

Keep ‘em coming!
#HallowedBeThyGamers
Man thanks so much for vouching! Honestly the past couple of years have been a blast playing these games and being able to chat about them with you. Hope you’re doing well brother
@@HallowedBeThyGame Likewise bro! Been doing well, thanks. Just quite busy lol Hope you and family are great also!
Love to see Skyrim getting love, like you said it’s a rite of passage. Another one I feel should be an honorable mention is immortals fenyx rising. Definitely a BOTW clone but also was such a fun time in its own right
Yesss these lists are such comfort food for me
I’m so stoked to hear!
Really enjoyed your list. I got a lot of good games to play off of this.
My favorite Action RPGs on the Switch so far are
- Witcher 3
- Breath of the Wild
- Xenoblade Chronicles 2
- Dusk Diver 2
- Indivisible (does that count?)
- Ys 8
- Star Ocean Second Story R
- Dying Light
Fantastic list! i need to be brave and play dying light,
I'll probably buy a few of these when they go on sale. Rather not pay full price for a side hustle
Got a good deal on Valkyrie and shining refrain resonance for less than 20 dollars together
Xenoblade is fun but story is so lacking and that sucks as the potential is there they have some good moments aside 2.
my only issue with Nier is that they call each chapter "ending", that led to a lot of people finishing Ending A and just quitting the game because they thought it was over
Final Fantasy XII gets so much unjustified hate.
@@brotbrotsen1100This is curious, I already wish there was this gambit system in several new RPGs, you can make many combinations and gameplay variations when you learn how to use it
Awesome 👍👍👍👍
Thanks 🤗
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch missing from this list is honestly criminal. I wouldn't necessarily say Action RPG fits as the best genre for that game, but considering the other games included on this list, Ni no Kuni definitely qualifies and deserves a spot here.
Love seeing NEO and Xenoblade on this list.
If you're going to play xenoblade please play it in this order:
XC1
XC1 Future Connect
XC2 DLC - Torna the Golden Age
XC2
XC3
XC3 DLC Future Redeemed
The reason I recommend playing XC2 DLC Torna BEFORE playing XC2 is because of how poorly paced the story telling in XC2 is. If you just want to understand the characters and plot better sooner, play torna 1st then XC2.
suggestion for next video. RPG's and or hack and slashers with large loot tables. i been dying to play a looter rpg but never find anything i fancy
Thanks for the request! I’ll have to try that
Surprised not to see Bayonetta series on the list!?My favourites from Platinum Games after Astral Chain!
Vesperia is easily my favorite Tales game, glad you gave it some love. Also a fan of the Y'S games myself. Falcom seems like the last great hope for quality JRPGs.
Couldn't agree more!
Such a great list. I need to pick up skyrim again and play Persona 5 Srikers after playing Persona 5 Royal
Thanks! Hope you have as much fun with Strikers as I did!
Of these I have the first Dusk Diver, Astral Chain, and Skyrim.
At this point I think Shining Resonance Refrain has to be the most underrated game on the switch. It is always left off of these lists
In fact, it's kinda hard to choose the "Action-RPG only" games because some other types are really really close (ie. some action-adventure and some metroidvania with RPG mechanics).
Trails of mana
World ends with you
Dust diver
Star oceans all seem very interesting as I do like adventure games with level ups and equipment most in rpg.
So happy to show ya some games that caught your eye! Thanks for watching!
@@HallowedBeThyGame yeah man idk I’ll get them but i do have most of these games mentioned beside a couple of them.
awesome vid
great games but dang He says "genuinely" and "zenith" way too much.
I definitely agree with a lot of the entries here. It sucks the Kingdom Hearts ports were handled so poorly - they could have been great additions to the Switch library.
Hades is incredibly hard. I’m on my 25th play through and still haven’t beaten it. One day. One day
After watching this video, my Joycons started trembling in fear.
Exactly! Variety is the spice of life!
Ys IX is also a decent action RPG, along with Shining Resonance Refrain and Code of Princess.
This list is exactly why I play my switch more than I play my pc
If you haven't tried them yet, you should try both Fate/Extella, those two are my favorite musou/warriors games, the gameplay is far faster than other warrior games and they are really fun games, specially if you like the Fate series.
29:25 telling us this section of gems just need to be tried is fine, but don't forget we can't simply "just try" switch games unless we "just buy" them first. good list none the less. it pays to go back and watch
a channels older videos on hidden gems because most times they're still hidden and still worth at least putting them on your wishlist.
We need a movie of Crisis Core where Johnny Reznik of the Goo Goo Dolls plays Genesis Rhapsodies.
That dude totally looks like him lol
I like your intro! I don't know why (must be SotN)
Alucard is one of my favorites!
Is not ideal, but it can "technically" be played on the switch.
half the games on this list aren't even rpgs but muso games and action adventures
my steam deck love's these video's, my storage space don't tho.
Haha steam deck rocks!
I didn't even know Neo TWEWY existed. Would have gotten sooner had I known....
I love every game on this list, though I haven't played the Zelda sequel yet (backlogged). The Switch has so many RPGs its insane. I have rarely come across one I don't like as a whole, though I might find things I don't like about them.
Age of calamity slaps foreal has great combat and objective goals
Dragons dogma definitely deserves to make the list...not honorable mention, imo. But great list nonetheless
