Funny audience....from the Disco signs it looks like they were expecting Boney M and got the lovely Kirsty MacColl instead and didn't realize the talent in front of them.....
Listen to Hallelujah by the Happy Mondays. The Long Version, when Shaun chants the title like a football crowd, not the Club Version. She did vocals for them. When her scream comes in shortly after the start, it's really freaky. Brilliant.
It was a great song by kirsty & her band, Shame about the Boring audience though ! & after seeing this i would have refused to do this Disco show if it was still going.
I wonder if Kirsty was miming and no music was filtering into the studio, that could be an explanation for the very very strange non-reaction of the audience, if not who knows what was going on because this is a great song from one of the best!
German audiences only scream for Tony Sheridan, the Beatles, and Scorpions. If you ain't Tony Sheridan, the Beatles, or Scorpions...forget it, you're getting the stone face. The best clip of Kirsty doing this song (there're a bunch) is from the BBC4 Artists Sing Elvis special. She's real lively in that version, actually gets to sing live, and the audience loves her. She had stage fright and could be timid sometimes in front of an audience, but in that clip, she's all cheeky and charming. Look for it; it's the one where she's in a black vest and blue t-shirt. This clip is hard to watch. She's moving her ass off, and those crumby Germans are just giving her the old "YOU'RE not Tony Sheridan" treatment. What a bunch of phonies.
The Germans aren't being rude, they just have different cultural and societal rules. The tend to be more reserved about things, but once you have gotten to know them they are VERY friendly. There's also the language barrier issue. You won't get the charm and humor in this song if you aren't fluent in english. And even Americans might be puzzled by the mention of a "chip shop" because we call them "french fries" and don't have dedicated "chip shops" under that name. Which is probably why this great song never made charts over here.
The audience is ridiculous. They look like they are at a funeral. She's singing her heart out, saying the funniest lines. Maybe they don't like Disco. There was a polite applause at the end, probably dubbed in.
I'm disappointed. I have always defended Germans but this one really does prove once and for all they do not have a sense of humour. Great performance Kirsty RIP.
The audience look like they just got a shot of Novocaine. Then again it might have something to do with a British singer singing a Great "Country" rock song IN ENGLISH on a DISCO show IN GERMANY.
In all fairness to the audience they are German and it's probably 1980 they wouldn't understand the language or what a chipshop was and how important chipshops were to us Brits.
You wrote about the pathetic audience from another planet. I can explain that: when I was Born on 29.12.1968 (Sunday) the No. 1 in the US Charts was Marvin Gaye with "I heard it through the grapevine", and Great Britain The Marmalade with "Obladi, oblada" topped the Charts and in Germany was a very, very stupid X.Mas Song No. 1. "Heidschi Bumbeidschi" from Heintje. Do you understand now?
Disco was a very popular music show in the late 70s and early 80s. The audience used to be like that, i have no idea why. Even when ABBA was singing thousands of hysterical, screaming fans in the stadiums worldwide, but when they were singing on German TV Shows like Disco, the audience has always been unimpressed.....
I like this song for many years so much. Ans still in 2024. Who's with me?
I just can't understand why there's no reaction from the audience. This is such a great song and performance. We all miss you,, Kirsty. R.I.P
I'd be holding a sign marry me😇😇😇
because they are german and have no idea what a chip shop is probably..lol
I agree. The audience are alseep! I can't sit still to this song...it really rocks!
Excellent song and artist👍
I agree with you totally and utterly.
Kirsty rocks
The audience sucks
Ckua played it today, a Classic from yester year and legend who died too young!
Fabulous song! Wish I had been there instead of that crap audience. Would have loved it. She was great!.
Funny audience....from the Disco signs it looks like they were expecting Boney M and got the lovely Kirsty MacColl instead and didn't realize the talent in front of them.....
Germans arn't they? Don't mention the war mate! Oh....I found out where your picture was taken from a few clues. A school in Bozeman Montana.
Love you, Kirsty.

From the titles at about 2.20, I assume this is from a German tv show. Hence why they didn't understand the lyrics.

I move more than them when I"m asleep!.
i love it my friend :)
Thanks, appreciate it

Or Hasselhoff. They love the Hoff
Once again proving that Germans love David Hasselholf.

beautifulllll
It's like Kirsty was playing to a cult who had never heard music before.
@ James and Praise:
The concept of this show in the 70s and 80s was not that the people dancing around in the area.
First information, then write.
Best Song Ever!
I think it's a French audience/TV prog. They were the same when the Who played!
Great song shame audience not enjoying it
Her vocals were always appealing but we're the double/treble tracked?
They just didn't get it?
the look on the audiances faces cant make out what this song is all about lol
OH !!!! The audience are German ~ that must explain it.

Germans lost their sense of humor in 45
But he's the only guy who's actually MOVING so that's probably why they took a shot of him! LOL!
The rest of the audience looks pissed off! :-D
lol @GunneySW it does haha an wut is with that crowd they all look like there in a trance
Looks like the audience all had their booster shots......dec 25/2021!😁
The audience look like they just got a shot of Novocaine.

Looks like Gary Barlow smiling up at her FFS!!
walk of life Dire Straits
The audience: Ja und?😁
Try not to look like you are enjoying yourselves. Holy f
congratulations on really getting your point across by using capitals. well in
I didn't know Cyndi Lauper had a sister who sang country? Or maybe it Linda Blair under pseudonym?
Oh, and just for the record, I really like the song!
In all fairness to the audience they are German and it's probably 1980 they wouldn't understand the language or what a chipshop was and how important chipshops were to us Brits.
These people dead?
lol :)
Good crowd ...
Is this filmed in Germany they have no idea who she is or what she's saying or France
because she's a female singer who doesn't look like a prostitute
What the hell is wrong with that audience
are they all awestruck or something ???
Germany
Like the chip dhop, like elvis and ...............

Were the audience TOLD to act like mindless dummies,
or did it come NATURALLY ?
Shameful !!
If you Google Why are German audiences crap trust me, you'll get results : )
