I've got an idea for a Flat Earth map that works. If you take the current Flat Earth map and bend the edges down all the way around so they meet together at a single point then it can work. All you need to do is have this 'bent down edge flat earth map' and rotate it on it's axis around the north pole (and the other pole we will call the south pole). Then you have to tilt it slightly. Finally have it go around the sun once a year - you need to move the sun a bit further away and make it bigger. I struggled a bit with how we wouldn't fall off on the bent down bits, then I thought - what if there was a weak force acting between every item with mass and every other item with mass - a sort of pulling force. Then we can all stick to the surface - whichever way up it is. This really works. There - I have managed to fix this with my own original research and stuff and my 'bent down edge flat earth map' (We'll have to call it something else - like an oblate spheroid or something...)
And the oblate spheroid is "So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like … ow … ound … round … ground! That’s it! That’s a good name - ground!"
I have a magical garbage bin where I fill it up, put on the sidewalk and magically the garbage disappears. Flat Earth isn't really an idea, it's a method of making ordinary and usually rather dumb people feel special about themselves when they're just _not_ special and can't handle that. I'm not special, either. I'm the least special person I know. I just also happen to be smart enough (and this doesn't take much) to realize that the Earth being round is what makes sense of all the things I've seen in my life.

The problem with conspiracy theories is that they only make sense if they have meaning. What would be the point of hiding that the earth is flat? Some flatties say to hide god and creation, but the majority of population on Earth believes in one god ore another, so why bother? To grieve for money? I think some say you can't go at all and some say you can't go to certain places. The reason you cant just go wherever you want it because there are lots of places that look safe to walk but are actually just huge snow drifts or very thin ice and you can fall through and get hurt or worse.

The most critical aspect of the timelapse of the 24 hours sun is the DIRECTION it circles the world. This particular detail seems to not have landed yet. Because it means that "UP" from the ground at the South Pole and "UP" from the ground at the North Pole point in opposite directions.

@@lasskinn474 In short, yes, because on the flat earth model, the arctic is at the center and Antarctica is a ring surrounding the entire world which means it's impossible for the Sun to circle it and illuminate it without also illuminating the rest of the world at the same time. So, while 24 hours of Sun and 24 hours of no Sun on the north pole is explainable on the flat earth model, the same is not the case for the south pole.
A light in the sky doesn’t prove anything. It certainly doesn’t prove a spinning wobbling pear. It just means we have no idea how the light source actually works. No one’s going to orbit no human is going to mars and yes I’ll believe when I can see it with my own two eyes.

Jeran has already said (and did so before going) that the experiment destroys the flat earth model, and he accepts that, but it doesn't prove the earth isn't flat. The statement, "Truth doesnt fear investigation" is certainly admirable but science educators and promoters on youtube have been doing experiments and demonstrations debunking every flat earth talking point over and over in countless different ways for years.
As it turns out, the flerf movement isn't really about truth. If it was, it would have been shattered into nothingness long before now by those experiments and demonstrations. These things are based in logic, and you can not logic someone out of a place they didn't logic themselves into. I forget which creator it was, but they did a deep dive into flerfs and mental health/trauma, and found a considerable overlap. That creator hypothesized that instead of dealing with their mental issues in a healthy way (like seeking therapy), flerfs go conspiracy-brained to cope with their issues; by making themselves the main character of a fantasy story that they then try their hardest to imagine is real. I'm also sure the sense of community they get from the flerf movement helps them cope as well. Channel 5 lightly touched on this years ago, when he interviewed a big player in the flerf community, and he admitted that they only got into flerf when his wife passed away. I would imagine he felt pretty lonely and vulnerable after that, maybe even desperate for a group to accept him. That's not to imply that the entire movement is dealing with trauma though, as grifters have recognized that flerfs will pay good money to be told their fantasies are real. They are prime targets for con-artists, and so that's what a portion of the movement has become.
So, their answer to being shown evidence that directly contradicts their claims is "don't take my word for it, do your own research." If we're not supposed to take your word on this, why were we supposed to take your word on everything you said before?

I still don't understand how this was necessary. As days in the northern hemisphere get shorter, they get longer in the south. The 24-hour sun in Antarctica is the extreme example, but the 17+ hours of daylight in Cape Horn right now are just as impossible on the flat earth map.

Indeed. At a given latitude north and south, the Sun's path across the sky and the times of rise/set are essentially exactly complementary. The small difference there is results from the Earth's elliptical orbit about the Sun. Another aspectvthe FE model must account for is its lack of perspective acceleration in the Sun's angular velocity throughout the day. Just as a jetliner at constant height and speed has its angular velocity reach maximum at closest approach, so too must the FE Sun. And at different places this peak angular velocity must vary also. Yet we observe that the Sun at all times and from all places retains a constant 15°/h angular velocity. And of course the azimuthal discrepancy is at least as equally damning. Where the globe model routinely and reliably permits predictions to very high accuracy, the FE 'model' has yet to make a single prediction which comes close to observed reality. Indeed, there is no math because the FE community steadfastly refuses to settle on anything like a definite, firm model. There MUST be room to interject indefinite, nebulous magic whenever any of the inevitable and numerous, pesky contradictions crops up.

This entire trip, all the effort, the planning, of course the economics, the data, the collecting, working together, is one of the greatest moments in this century, in my opinion. It not only proves the earth is not flat, but is an incredible demonstration about the "objectiveness" of science versus the "subjectiveness" of ones personal beliefs. This was a huge, real-world SCALED experiment. Kuddos to everyone involved.

Fun fact, the modern flat earth movement was started in the 1800 by earth centric religious believers in England. They didn’t like that the church was agreeing with science that earth wasn’t the center of the universe. They took various texts out of context or completely lacking facts and championed them.

I have been laid up with a bad back and have watched as many of the live streams as I can. Its been stunning and exciting to watch. They were extremely lucky with the weather. It was quite funny for us Brits to see Californians exclaiming about 17 hours of daylight at the tip of South America before they all set off for Antarctica. The latitude of Punta Arenas is 53 deg South. Manchester UK is 53 deg North. So we are used to it! Nice summary Dan, hope you can get more content out of this adventure.

As a former flight dispatcher I'd say all these morons had to do is talk to the pilots and check their route.. to be able to fly the shortest distance between two points, the course has to be constantly adjusted to compensate for the curvature of the earth, the so called great circle route. If an airplane would fly a constant heading, it would result in a loxodrome or 'rhumb line' (a corkscrew shaped route.) They could have spared themselves the trip. And the emberrasment.

I've got an idea for a Flat Earth map that works.
If you take the current Flat Earth map and bend the edges down all the way around so they meet together at a single point then it can work. All you need to do is have this 'bent down edge flat earth map' and rotate it on it's axis around the north pole (and the other pole we will call the south pole). Then you have to tilt it slightly. Finally have it go around the sun once a year - you need to move the sun a bit further away and make it bigger.
I struggled a bit with how we wouldn't fall off on the bent down bits, then I thought - what if there was a weak force acting between every item with mass and every other item with mass - a sort of pulling force. Then we can all stick to the surface - whichever way up it is. This really works.
There - I have managed to fix this with my own original research and stuff and my 'bent down edge flat earth map'
(We'll have to call it something else - like an oblate spheroid or something...)

Flat Earth isn't really an idea, it's a method of making ordinary and usually rather dumb people feel special about themselves when they're just _not_ special and can't handle that. So, while 24 hours of Sun and 24 hours of no Sun on the north pole is explainable on the flat earth model, the same is not the case for the south pole.
You can take a flerf into orbit far enough to see the globe in enentirety and stand him on the moon and he will claim it's a green screen.

The statement, "Truth doesnt fear investigation" is certainly admirable but science educators and promoters on youtube have been doing experiments and demonstrations debunking every flat earth talking point over and over in countless different ways for years.
As it turns out, the flerf movement isn't really about truth. If it was, it would have been shattered into nothingness long before now by those experiments and demonstrations. These things are based in logic, and you can not logic someone out of a place they didn't logic themselves into.
I forget which creator it was, but they did a deep dive into flerfs and mental health/trauma, and found a considerable overlap. That creator hypothesized that instead of dealing with their mental issues in a healthy way (like seeking therapy), flerfs go conspiracy-brained to cope with their issues; by making themselves the main character of a fantasy story that they then try their hardest to imagine is real.
I'm also sure the sense of community they get from the flerf movement helps them cope as well. Channel 5 lightly touched on this years ago, when he interviewed a big player in the flerf community, and he admitted that they only got into flerf when his wife passed away. I would imagine he felt pretty lonely and vulnerable after that, maybe even desperate for a group to accept him.
That's not to imply that the entire movement is dealing with trauma though, as grifters have recognized that flerfs will pay good money to be told their fantasies are real. They are prime targets for con-artists, and so that's what a portion of the movement has become.
So, their answer to being shown evidence that directly contradicts their claims is "don't take my word for it, do your own research."

I still don't understand how this was necessary. As days in the northern hemisphere get shorter, they get longer in the south. The 24-hour sun in Antarctica is the extreme example, but the 17+ hours of daylight in Cape Horn right now are just as impossible on the flat earth map.

Indeed. At a given latitude north and south, the Sun's path across the sky and the times of rise/set are essentially exactly complementary. The small difference there is results from the Earth's elliptical orbit about the Sun.
Another aspectvthe FE model must account for is its lack of perspective acceleration in the Sun's angular velocity throughout the day. Just as a jetliner at constant height and speed has its angular velocity reach maximum at closest approach, so too must the FE Sun. And at different places this peak angular velocity must vary also.
Yet we observe that the Sun at all times and from all places retains a constant 15°/h angular velocity.
And of course the azimuthal discrepancy is at least as equally damning.
Where the globe model routinely and reliably permits predictions to very high accuracy, the FE 'model' has yet to make a single prediction which comes close to observed reality. Indeed, there is no math because the FE community steadfastly refuses to settle on anything like a definite, firm model. There MUST be room to interject indefinite, nebulous magic whenever any of the inevitable and numerous, pesky contradictions crops up.

This entire trip, all the effort, the planning, of course the economics, the data, the collecting, working together, is one of the greatest moments in this century, in my opinion. It not only proves the earth is not flat, but is an incredible demonstration about the "objectiveness" of science versus the "subjectiveness" of ones personal beliefs. This was a huge, real-world SCALED experiment. Kuddos to everyone involved.

It's beautiful that Dave Weiss feels so confident to jump up and defend the green screen glitch precisely because he KNOWS that he understands what happened there and is completely confident in his explanation. If only he could see that that's exactly how most of us feel about our understanding of the globe. We see flerfers who don't understand moon phases the same way he sees flerfers who don't understand green screen video production.

If I had just spent $35,000 to fly 4 idiots Antarctica to show them the thing they said did not exist, did in fact exist, and I conduct an interview in which they said that it was still undecided, they could be wrong about this one thing, but that didn't mean the earth wasn't flat... I'd probably just left them there...

Fun fact, the modern flat earth movement was started in the 1800 by earth centric religious believers in England. They didn’t like that the church was agreeing with science that earth wasn’t the center of the universe. They took various texts out of context or completely lacking facts and championed them.

This whole thing will one day go down in history as one of the saddest moments of the modern age. That a bunch of independant, scientific minds wasted so much time, resources and effort arguing back and forth over an established fact. The only thing sadder than some guy thinking the world is flat, is the amount of effort wasted by intelligent people to prove the guy wrong. It's like nasa spending 2 billion to take a moon drill core sample, just to prove it isn't cheese.

The only thing sadder than some guy thinking the world is flat, is the fact that this irrefutable evidence means nothing, and will change nothing, for 99.999% of flerfs. Flat earth is a hill they're willing to die on. It's a cult, it's all they know, and they are emotionally invested. They're part of a "community", and many of their cult members are their friends. If a cultist denies flat earth they are ostracized, insulted, ridiculed, and excommunicated from the cult. They lose all their flerfy friends. Most aren't willing to do that.

I have been laid up with a bad back and have watched as many of the live streams as I can. Its been stunning and exciting to watch. They were extremely lucky with the weather. It was quite funny for us Brits to see Californians exclaiming about 17 hours of daylight at the tip of South America before they all set off for Antarctica. The latitude of Punta Arenas is 53 deg South. Manchester UK is 53 deg North. So we are used to it! Nice summary Dan, hope you can get more content out of this adventure.

As a former flight dispatcher I'd say all these morons had to do is talk to the pilots and check their route.. to be able to fly the shortest distance between two points, the course has to be constantly adjusted to compensate for the curvature of the earth, the so called great circle route. If an airplane would fly a constant heading, it would result in a loxodrome or 'rhumb line' (a corkscrew shaped route.) They could have spared themselves the trip. And the emberrasment.

The 24 hour sun in Antarctica is a strong proof of the globe, admitting to it is like a Flat Earther admitting that gravity is real or that ships disappear over the horizon from bottom to top.

Yeah there are limits to skepticism, but these people aren't even skeptics. They have a conclusion they want to believe because it's what their religion teaches upon a literal reading. Their behavior is a facade of skepticism.
They're not even skeptics, they don't do any independent experiments to reach their flat earth positions, and the few experiments made by flat earthers get outright ignored because they don't allign with their beliefs. Flat earth is a religion.

A reflective dome as God has made can make the sun have such an effect on a FE. This test has been done and proven, proving this "final experiment" proved absolutely nothing.
