  • Trudi and Turnip are our Airedale terriers - and we love them. We also have a sweet gentle dog called Annie, but this video is mostly about Turnip and Trudi. About how we train them, what they do all day, and especially about their very waggy tails : - )

      We don't know anything about Annie before she came here. The vet who rescued her from the city wonders whether she might have been used to produce puppies. She was in a bad condition when she came to us, and emotionally, she's still recovering really, but at the same time the sweetest gentlest dog there is, never grumpy with people, always loving.

    Beautiful dogs - all three of them. I have been an Airedale fan since my teens and like yourself I wondered why Airedales no longer seemed to be a popular breed even here in England. HOWEVER.... my niece who lives in another part of Manchester from me says she has in the last few months,, seen FIVE new Airedales and their owners when walking her neighbour's dog. Five new Airedales in one middle class suburb- surely this is a positive sign for our lovely dogs.!

    I've kept Airedales forever. I reckon the breed is getting bigger, I've noticed the KC no longer gives heights and weight for the standard. The boys are maybe 1/3 bigger than the ladies. Our last lad was huge and went to some 47kg at his peak. Our current 5 month old must be over 25kg now, you can almost see him growing.
    He heard your dogs on the video and sparked off at it, right in my ear.
    He's already trained to the usual commands but he's at the 'thug' stage where he doesn't know his own strength and playtime can be a bit violent, Airedales like playing 'bitey face' and those choppers are hard, so are their skulls. They're so intelligent that many of the normal training tricks don't work - he'll be naughty so you will give him a command to stop that and then a treat, thinking two steps ahead; so you have to think three steps ahead. They'll get bored repeating the same command, you have to move on to the next one, but they can learn six commands at the same time; you can mix them up.They always think about obeying a command or whether there is something else more important they should do - squirrel!

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you describe sound so like our Trudi! She loves doing the commands, but doesn't like it so much when I want her to show them off to others, or she does them all in quick succession when I only ask for 'sit', thinking Sandra asks me anyways eventually for them so I might get it all done and over with for her in quicker time! and yes, if there's any tiny distraction...there goes the attention! Our Turnip will be much bigger than Trudi, I can see that already!

    I really like their sporty energy. I just don't care for their coat colour though:p. Maybe their coat colour is what makes the breed less popular? But also, it seems ike staffies (huge heads) and breeds whith smashed in noses are more popular now days..

He started this at a very early stage in life.

    They are beautiful dogs. I had many and did the grooming myself which takes time. As long as you don't get the pick of the litter they are very intelligent. I had issues with their hunting instinct, they can become troublesome in that respect. I love the breed but you need to understand that their high energy level needs to be satisfied.
    *side note* I had a farm with a pond and 2 Airedale puppies, one came running back to my horse just barking away, he was telling me that his brother got his foot stuck in the pond reeds. That was very cute.

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes they are! And yes, they need a lot of space to use their heaps of energy - not a city dog or indoor dog by any means! That's so clever of your puppy to call you for help!

    I have an Airerdale pup (male ) and he is as nonschalant a Dog as you can get . That's not to say he does not have character and energy but Airedales are definately dogs with minds of their own , very handsome they are too with almost no shedding of any kind of that coat which although wiry outer has a beautifully soft down like fur close to the skin which when brushed comes out . Any one considering a Dog I urge you to consider an Airedale they are not as popular as they once were (in the 1940s ) and as a result may be way down peoples choice list based on what's in vogue currently ..but they are excellent Dogs .

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree - if you like to be outdoors and meet an energetic dog's urge to play and move and learn, then Airedales will bring you heaps of joy. They certainly know what they want but are very keen to learn from you what you want.

    I'm studying breeds, in hopes to find the best one to be a farm dog, as well as to be a trick, obedience and agility partner. I've adored every airendale I've met. My one concern was their pray hunting heritage (I have a sweet cockatiel in my home) but it seems if I train a puppy up with supervision, they can know what to chase and what not to. There are moles, squirrels and foxes a plenty to ward off ;)

      Pick of the litter in Airedales is dumb as a stump. They will tear your vehicle to shreds along with the clothing and shoes of its favorite person. To be fair, the largest, attn seeking puppy of any breed isn't the wisest choice in most cases. The somewhat standoffish but curious are the best and brightest in my experience.

    So interesting to hear how you care for their coats. And all the other interesting things about Airedales. I had one next door when I was growing up. Her name was Tiger, it was great fun to go to school and tell my friends there was a tiger living next door to me! Our current dog is a French Waterdog. But he too is not that keen on water and was put to shame by a Springer Spaniel who demonstrated how a “real water dog” springs fearlessly into our local river. So your video made me laugh, when you mentioned that. Every dog, no matter the breed, will have their own personality it’s part of what makes them such good companions. As always, thanks for sharing. And hugs to the dogs.

    Any border collie will cower away if you look directly at them, that's how they herd, they use there eyes to intimidate and move there herd. so if you do it to them they get uncomfortable and a bit confused as to what you want them to do.

      It's more of an Annie thing with the camera. She doesn't like being filmed or having her photo taken. Otherwise she's the happiest dog interacting. She's still quite insecure because of her rescue history, always following like a quiet shadow and always licking whenever she can, even after 8 years of living wityh us she needs a lot of reassurance that she has landed and will stay in her forever home.

      @@WayOutWestx2 Yes Mine are the same I've had a few over the years 3 to be exact my second one lived to be 20 years old. But, he had to go live with my uncle at age 5 because I couldn't be with him at all times. My uncle took Butler to work with him. Every border collie I've owned would shy away from direct eye contact & yes the camera pointed at them. So many people bring there border collies back to shelters, simply saying they have no confidence and they are afraid they will turn on some one. But, that same dog will take on a herd of bulls if you ask him / her too. Moving them with there eyes and cutting of the drive line.

    I would never chose to trim their coat as it obviously hurts. I had an Airedale and she had her coat cut twice a year. I don’t like signs of fear but I understand that I am the only one to recognize fear in their wagging pleasing tails.

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Docking is now prohibited in many EU countires - luckily! It takes away so much of how the dogs expresse their feelings and thoughts. Our rescue dog Bob had his tail docked before he came to us - it was always sad to see how he tried to communicate with what was left of his tail...

    • @kendo7704
      @kendo7704 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I respectfully disagree with you, I have 2 Airedales both dock tails and they are even more expressive, it brings great joy to me to see their short tails wagging, also if used to hunt they cannot be as easily grabbed by a mountain lion or bear, these dogs are simply amazing if used as a working dog but it takes people like myself and family who set high expectations of them and boy oh boy do they live up to what we expect. I would add that they are also cherished family members and that truly is what makes this breed wonderful they are soooo versatile. Best to you and yours! PS mine are Cricket and Cooper

    I first noticed your videos because of Bob and have stuck around. I have been meaning to ask you about the Airedales. It is clear that they get along with the small critters - or at least show no aggressive behavior. Was that already in these dogs nature? Or is it your training? After the passing of my Bergamasco, I am starting to look for a other dog. I have been told that the Airedales will get along with cats that they are raises with, but will kill critters in your yard such as rabbits and squirrels. That notion has my wife worried enough that she wants me to look at other dogs. Just curious about your experience with them.

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our two are really good but I suspect that's because they get a huge amount of exercise and attention. And even then we wouldn't trust them with rabbits or guineapigs. They probably would be ok - as they are with the poultry - but they might get carried away and forget. They love children and babies and they're easy to groom, but they're basically ratters and that's never far beneath the surface. Good luck!

      I find there's a big difference between Trudi and Turnip - maybe a female/male thing? Turnip certainly would take on anything he meets that might turn nasty with a feisty bark, and he's only 5 months old! But he loves humans and all the animals we humans love and usually the barking is restricted to him seeing his own image in a shop window ;)
