Excellent video! These guys are why many of us in our 30s+ played the game. Unboxing videos are cool for reliving that excitement of busting packs, but seeing boxes with stencils and old boxes is what the game /felt/ like back then. Hope this guy cashed out!
500$ for a Black Lotus was possible on eBay also in 2003/2004, I mean I remembered when Wizard stopped supporting type 1 in official tournaments people just sold for cheap.
I am glad his Mom did not destroy his cards. Mine did, I had left my mono black deck laying out. Unholy Strength and Demonic Tutor got all my cards burnt. That was in 94. That was the day I lost my religion, lol. I still bring up how much the cards are worth from time to time.
When I was in high school, my mother brought a Franciscan monk over [family friend - nice guy] and had him bless my room, specifically my 'magic' cards, which were in an open box, no top, no sleeves. They were only slightly water damaged. Used it to my advantage back in the day, as psychological leverage during games/matches, "These cards have literally been blessed... by a Franciscan monk!" appeared to increase my winning % by just a tad, heh ABU + Dark + Rev cards... still have most of them, and one fairly water warped deck, but yeah... there were some other mom magic card destruction events. thanks ma - > LOL
When I started playing in 95 the alpha black lotus was about 250-300 in my area and the beta lotus was about 300-400. Unfortunately at 14 that was way above my budget. A majority of the alpha card could be had relatively cheap then, they were not as desirable due to the different corners.
I started in '94 and I can recall seeing multiple Alpha/Beta Black Lotus sitting in the display case for $235.00 and the rest of the power 9 for $85.00 to $135.00 and the unlimited versions were cheaper than that, all unlimited power 9 could be had for $35 to $85. I regret not picking them up when I could but at the time the reserved list didn't exist so I thought I'd eventually get them in some form.
Yeah I had an alpha sapphire I traded up for, but it was considered marked with the penny sleeves then and the rest of my deck expansions like dark, legends, and revised
Funny story about Scrye. Back in middle school I managed to obtain a copy of Playboy magazine. In order to hide it, I pulled the cover off one of my Scrye magazines and stapled it to the cover of my Playboy. That way if my parents ever saw the Playboy, they would think it was a Scrye =)
I don't collect MTG, I collect Pokemon, but I have to say.. I love hearing people's stories, these are my favorite kind of videos to watch. Thank you for sharing, I love when you do this. The 1st ed base set charizard is my Black Lotus 😎 I hope one day to get a Black lotus, it's just such a special card.
I started playing Magic in 95 .....too bad I was 8... Old enough to know the nostalgia.....but too young of had the money to get the good card back then.
I still have an Italian magazine called “the oracle” from 1995 where shops posted ADs for various cards. Black lotus was 500.000 lire, which was the Italian currency back then, roughly 200$
I’m 19 I’ve been playing magic for several years. I love complete sets, whenever new sets come out I like to try collecting as many of the card in foil as I can for that sets portfolio. I don’t understand why more people don’t do the same.
Man... I started Dark/Rev too and ended playing at the end of the Mirage block. Like you the game was changing really fast, no money to keep up with the tournament scene. I remember trying to make a Revised set and going off the checklist, not even knowing what some cards were/looked like and the fun of hunting them down for my binder. Miss those days. Glad it's still going and popular, but feels different.
I was part of the "Go Guru" program back in 99. They sent me a foil island. A disappointment at the time... just looked up what it is going for now...😥😭😢
I remember that the Black Lotus was in 2 different Card stores when I was younger in SoCal... Long Beach area... that being Line Drive Baseball Cards in Bixby Knolls (A suburb of Long Beach) and later at Amazing Comics in both cases the cards were always going for a lot of $$$$ Only Amazing Comics and Cards is still around... I legitimately pulled a Jeweled Lotus from a draft booster pack recently as yesterday!!! from a pack that they gave me
A good friend of mine and me used to play MTG in Borders in Douglasville back in the day. Id been playing 4-5 months starting at Stronghold. My friend from day 1 and his whole family. Some kid was watching us with a long sleeve box of cards. My friend went to the bathroom and the kid asked me if I wanted to buy his cards. I asked if he just didnt enjoy it and he said hes doing other things. So i flipped through some and I noticed 3 Berserks black border and tons of older cards and if I bought this many new cards probably cost 60 bucks. But I had 40 and offered it and he accepted. So he left. So my friend came back and I was shuffling some Slivers and he asked about the box. I said the that kid who was watching sold them to me. So David asked me to see whats in the box. David had given me a binder of cards and a couple Queens for my deck. Lol. So David starts flipping through cards and he loves Elves with Berserk and that green stuff that goes well with Elves and all of a sudden he starts yelling oh my God... I thought he was upset mad or felt cheated or something. Then he starts pulling cards out as hes flipping through them looking at me cussing and laughing at same time. Other people giving us dirty looks. And he starts mumbling 40 f.... Bucks and im sitting on the toilet while you getting the deal if the century... 3 Black Lotus, about 14 dual lands white and black border. 1;black border lotus and 2 whites. 4 of those blue counterspells that cost 0 mana. About 10 various moxes. Pearl, jet, emerald etc. Tons of stuff older than what I have. And because he was nice enough to get me started in magic i gave him 1 white border lotus and some duplicates of other cards. He wanted the black border but i told him im keeping 1 of each. I really didnt know values of this stuff, But through the years ive met so many cool people playing magic. He said all this im pulling out is more than 40 bucks alone! He was honest and said the lotus was easily 700 and the lands 60-70 each. I had no idea. Thats my story and i enjoy your videos!
I absolutely fucking loved this video. It definitely reminds me of collecting back with ABU/AN/LEG etc. My uncle would print a list w could mark off and what not. Something I severely miss from ABU packs is the "Visit the Shores of Imagination". It really was a good saying for old school magic.
Awesome nostalgia! Also, I have the same stamped Mountain "business card". That store is still in business, but has moved. The old location is now a Molly Moon's Ice Cream shop. Comics Dungeon was one of two neighborhood (Wallingford) stores that sold MTG cards when I was a bit younger. They have always focused more on comics, but they used to have 4-for-$1 boxes where you could have snapped up tons of reserve list cards from Antiquities, Arabian Nights, etc. back in the day. New address if anyone cares: 319 NE 45th St, Seattle, WA 98105.
I started playing in 4th and Mirage when i was 8-9. Back then magic was just one thing: nerd kids And unfortunately i never got my hands on alpha beta arabian. The Comic shop had some boosters etc, but they were too expensive :(
Can i buy all the garbage commons. I still play just to play with my friends. Im looking for anything from tempest and back. Im all about deckbuilding.
I am happy he made the choice to sell to Daniel. Cause Vintage MTG isn't about locking them up in a vault. So other people may actually get to enjoy these cards.
Yeah, a crisis is coming, but it's all irrelevant. The cards are gonna go up again and people who sold them during the crisis are gonna cry in a corner.
He should sell that shit and get gastic bypass. Chances of this dude living more than 10 years and cashing out for bigger gains than he already has gotten is less likely than him dying of a stroke, heart attack, diabetes.
I paid $100 for my ABL back in '95. Very happy to still own it and to have added Richard Garfield's signature in '95 and Chris Rush's in '16. I call it "The Heart of Magic".
Daniel probably offered like 150k knowing that shit was closer to a million but this guy cant turn down cash like that. Chances are he hasnt looked at them in over a decade
Super come up! We brushed off the black lotus like it was just another squirtle in the binder. This video went well with my morning coffee :)
Jessi Darling doode you are super cool for even knowing what’s going on here
Excellent video! These guys are why many of us in our 30s+ played the game. Unboxing videos are cool for reliving that excitement of busting packs, but seeing boxes with stencils and old boxes is what the game /felt/ like back then. Hope this guy cashed out!

But what price your eternal soul bro? Only joking :p
Well there was a ps of mixed beta and unlimited. So I think around 120k or so in the current market.
When I was in high school, my mother brought a Franciscan monk over [family friend - nice guy] and had him bless my room, specifically my 'magic' cards, which were in an open box, no top, no sleeves.

I'm sorry to hear that. I've taken some Ls in MTG too.

If we only new that we could have made a small investment and boom I'm rich in 20 years

I miss Scrye
These are getting more rare everyday..boxes with old school gems. "OH THE MEMORIES"!! Solid vid D Chang!
thanks bro!
Enjoyed seeing this OG collection reminds me of way back when.
I passed up a beta black lotus for $350 in 1997. I was in 7th grade and couldn’t afford it.
I remember the black lotus being 200 dollars in junior high in 1995
Great interview Dan, really enjoyed listening to John's story. Thanks to you both:)
I started playing Magic in 95 .....too bad I was 8... Old enough to know the nostalgia.....but too young of had the money to get the good card back then.

Another great video. I love these trips down memory lane you provide for us all.
Super fun video Daniel! Thanks for sharing!
I love these stories such positive memories and good times surround what MTG should be about. Collecting cards and playing MTG with your friends.
If only I knew once upon a time I could of kept all my cards and grabbed all the alpha possible I could of retired in my 30s😥
@Jay Kenley true man. Same with bitcoin lol
I’m 19 I’ve been playing magic for several years. I love complete sets, whenever new sets come out I like to try collecting as many of the card in foil as I can for that sets portfolio. I don’t understand why more people don’t do the same.
Because you cant invest in it. No one cares about complete sets.
Always keep the limited cards. Always.
Random but... did you sell that LEA Goblin King? I think I ended up with it haha. What an oddly cut card.
I remember that the Black Lotus was in 2 different Card stores when I was younger in SoCal... Long Beach area...
that being Line Drive Baseball Cards in Bixby Knolls (A suburb of Long Beach)
and later at Amazing Comics
in both cases the cards were always going for a lot of $$$$
Only Amazing Comics and Cards is still around... I legitimately pulled a Jeweled Lotus from a draft booster pack recently as yesterday!!! from a pack that they gave me
I also like to sit outside with thousands of dollars casually on display for the whole world to see and hopefully not rob me for.
Glad I never threw out my cards. I have around 200 alpha and beta cards left from my collection, ill never sell them.
A good friend of mine and me used to play MTG in Borders in Douglasville back in the day. Id been playing 4-5 months starting at Stronghold. My friend from day 1 and his whole family. Astro recall is still impossible to find....great vid Dan.
2:12 sorry but can we please appreaciate the gentleman in the back opening the door for his GF?? insane
yeah i wrote on my boxes of cards. love the nostalgia
I wish I would have kept on working on my Dad's Alpha collection he gave me on my 21st birthday of 2000. This is beautiful.
Do you still have them or did you sell them
I absolutely fucking loved this video. It definitely reminds me of collecting back with ABU/AN/LEG etc. My uncle would print a list w could mark off and what not. Something I severely miss from ABU packs is the "Visit the Shores of Imagination". It really was a good saying for old school magic.
I do it with my booster packs....I cut out the set name and tape it on the box
So sick, nice payday for that guy. Looking through those binders even when you've seen it hundreds of times before always gets your heart racing
45 seconds in and all can think is that one-third of the cards in those binders are gonna be dented from the rings.
Beta was more money back then cuz you couldn’t play with Alfa due to the corners. Would be a marked card.
Awesome nostalgia! Also, I have the same stamped Mountain "business card". That store is still in business, but has moved. The old location is now a Molly Moon's Ice Cream shop. I drew a pretty sick ass graveyard scene on my OG Box. Pretty sure it was under a buck per gallon in Florida where I grew up back in 96-97.
1:46 total Brett Hart or Hart Foundation wrasslin' fan
Please be more careful when turning pages in ring binders. I’d hate to see vintage cards get damaged because someone turned a page too quick.
I started playing in 4th and Mirage when i was 8-9.
Back then magic was just one thing: nerd kids
And unfortunately i never got my hands on alpha beta arabian. The Comic shop had some boosters etc, but they were too expensive :(
Can i buy all the garbage commons. I still play just to play with my friends. Im looking for anything from tempest and back. Im all about deckbuilding.
To Kill A Giant I have some tempest if you want to work something out . Have a lot of 94-96 to get rid of
Can you disclose how much you paid for the collection?
14:22 My mom did... i had TONS of oldschool cards
I am happy he made the choice to sell to Daniel. Cause Vintage MTG isn't about locking them up in a vault. So other people may actually get to enjoy these cards.
LOL at over hyped inflated prices. LUL
Yeah, a crisis is coming, but it's all irrelevant. The cards are gonna go up again and people who sold them during the crisis are gonna cry in a corner.
$960? Why videotape an actual rape...
Well, besides the guy, you have also not seen any old school guy who cuts templates and all.
the revised mountain is amazing!
Nice retirement shoulda got that lotus graded awesome video
Man Fantastic Video guys! Congrats to both of you!
awesome time with him, fun to hear the stories!
He should sell that shit and get gastic bypass. Chances of this dude living more than 10 years and cashing out for bigger gains than he already has gotten is
less likely than him dying of a stroke, heart attack, diabetes.
Sweet stuff!!! :)
I paid $100 for my ABL back in '95. Very happy to still own it and to have added Richard Garfield's signature in '95 and Chris Rush's in '16. I call it "The Heart of Magic".
And my old school binders look JUST LIKE THAT!! haha
2:15 A true gentleman :)
lol, staged actors!
1997: InQuest > Scrye
InQuest Master Race ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
Easy
May I ask; under or over $50,000 for everything he had?
Alpha lotus, it's over 50k
juan garcia, I would guess way over that.
easily over 50k haha
Daniel probably offered like 150k knowing that shit was closer to a million but this guy cant turn down cash like that. Chances are he hasnt looked at them in over a decade
Absolutely no chance that is worth a million.
I love your vids.
thanks buddy!
The psychology behind drawing daggars is dark. This dude creepy AF
The "nostalgia" doesn't exist anymore because Wizards keeps printing garbage.
do you know what the word nostalgia even means? The future has no impact on the past bro.
