No, I disagree with that fundamentally. There's bad faith and there's good faith, and there are real examples of bad faith arguments on CNN sometimes. But it's valid to do what he is actually doing. He's clear enough if you listen to him that this guy is a bad person and a bad candidate, but he's trying to do something that genuinely needs to be done, which is to try to evaluate the perspective of people who support candidates like that without automatically dismissing them. If you want to know why that's important, those people might win this year. The race is so tight that noone knows what the outcome will be. If you think dismissing the reason, the causes for this kind of thing is a good strategy, I assure you, Trump has done everything in his power to throw this race away. Look at his debate performance, for example. His running mate is one of the least popular, indeed the least popular VP pick in history. And yet it's 50-50. Democrats have failed to build a coalition that can win against Trump convincingly. They might win, but convincingly? There's no evidence of that right now. What will you do if someone more competent than Trump becomes the new leader of MAGA next time? What will you do if they gain voteshare even without a competent leader? At some point you have to recognise that it doesn't matter how awful people like this are, they're a manifestation of something deeper. And sure, some of that is really ugly stuff that we want to dismiss, such as racism. But not all of it. And he's right to do so, because guess what, democrats have failed to create a strong enough coalition to feel confident they can beat Trump. If you can't figure out what it is that is animating these people without just dismissing it, you will never be able to win elections. Trump is a terrible politician in most respects, he does things that are utterly self-sabotaging. So what are you going to do when someone competent becomes the leader of MAGA? What are you going to do if you can't even beat Trump? At some point democrats need to learn to understand coalition politics. No, I disagree with that fundamentally. There's bad faith and there's good faith, and there are real examples of bad faith arguments on CNN sometimes. But it's valid to do what he is actually doing. He's clear enough if you listen to him that this guy is a bad person and a bad candidate, but he's trying to do something that genuinely needs to be done, which is to try to evaluate the perspective of people who support candidates like that without automatically dismissing them.
If you want to know why that's important, those people might win this year. The race is so tight that noone knows what the outcome will be. If you think dismissing the reason, the causes for this kind of thing is a good strategy, I assure you, Trump has done everything in his power to throw this race away. Look at his debate performance, for example. His running mate is one of the least popular, indeed the least popular VP pick in history.
And yet it's 50-50. Democrats have failed to build a coalition that can win against Trump convincingly. They might win, but convincingly? There's no evidence of that right now. What will you do if someone more competent than Trump becomes the new leader of MAGA next time?
