Good Will Hunting - You're just a kid

  • Sean: Thought about what you said to me the other day, about my painting. Stayed up half the night thinking about it. Something occurred to me... fell into a deep peaceful sleep, and haven't thought about you since. Do you know what occurred to me?
    Will: No.
    Sean: You're just a kid, you don't have the faintest idea what you're talkin' about.
    Will: Why thank you.
    Sean: It's all right. You've never been out of Boston.
    Will: Nope.
    Sean: So if I asked you about art, you'd probably give me the skinny on every art book ever written. Michelangelo, you know a lot about him. Life's work, political aspirations, him and the pope, sexual orientations, the whole works, right? But I'll bet you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. You've never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling; seen that. If I ask you about women, you'd probably give me a syllabus about your personal favorites. You may have even been laid a few times. But you can't tell me what it feels like to wake up next to a woman and feel truly happy. You're a tough kid. And I'd ask you about war, you'd probably throw Shakespeare at me, right, "once more unto the breach dear friends." But you've never been near one. You've never held your best friend's head in your lap, watch him gasp his last breath looking to you for help. I'd ask you about love, you'd probably quote me a sonnet. But you've never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable. Known someone that could level you with her eyes, feeling like God put an angel on earth just for you. Who could rescue you from the depths of hell. And you wouldn't know what it's like to be her angel, to have that love for her, be there forever, through anything, through cancer. And you wouldn't know about sleeping sitting up in the hospital room for two months, holding her hand, because the doctors could see in your eyes, that the terms "visiting hours" don't apply to you. You don't know about real loss, 'cause it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself. And I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much. And look at you... I don't see an intelligent, confident man... I see a cocky, scared shitless kid. But you're a genius Will. No one denies that. No one could possibly understand the depths of you. But you presume to know everything about me because you saw a painting of mine, and you ripped my fucking life apart. You're an orphan right?
    [Will nods]
    Sean: You think I know the first thing about how hard your life has been, how you feel, who you are, because I read Oliver Twist? Does that encapsulate you? Personally... I don't give a shit about all that, because you know what, I can't learn anything from you, I can't read in some fuckin' book. Unless you want to talk about you, who you are. Then I'm fascinated. I'm in. But you don't want to do that do you sport? You're terrified of what you might say. Your move, chief.

    what a fantastic scene. we learn an important aspect about Matt Damon's character, the idea that for all his intelligence he has not had the human experience to give it substance. And In the moment he realizes it we see him become vulnerable, a foreshadowing to the most climactic scene in the entire movie, when he finally cries. and his walls come down completely.

    The painting scene demonstrated how Will was deflecting the personal questions Sean asked about him right from the start and got defensive and accusing him subtly about why he is done things the wrong way.
    It shows his fear of vulnerability and the resulting coping mechanism in form of seeking knowledge about things, seeking perfection and smoking as distractions from real pain.
    Sean was composed from the start, recognizing Will's attempts to deflect the questions ,and the hidden rage behind his defensive statements. The moment he lost his cool as it came to his wife, gave Will the signal that he got him defensive, and now he can push him away really quickly by escalating Sean's rage, thus escaping from vulnerability and the situation itself. It's a pattern of behavior he is used to as his coping mechanism since the time he has been hurt by being vulnerable.
    This scene demonstrates how Sean has come to the realization about his personal rage that day, the reason behind it and the realization how to communicate the necessity of vulnerability to Will.
    At the start, Will was trying to enrage him again asking silly questions but Sean brought back things from where they left off to bring back continuity in their relationship and the impact of what happened that day. As he said, he realized, about the reasons that rattled him that day so much , soothe himself and got clear about the problem to be specifically with Will and not him. The thing to learn here from Sean is how to embrace your emotions be it good or bad ,think what it's telling about you ,where your adaptation is weak, and learn from it so that you don't rely on coping mechanisms thereby inviting irrational behavior.
    Vulnerability is key. It's tough to be vulnerable when people often get wounded too much by it. That's why it's easy to desire for being loved by someone than to love someone.

    Watching this scene and then listening to Angel/Lonely by Illenium makes experiencing the songs a million times better. It brings tears to me eyes knowing Illenium incorporates such a powerful scene into a powerful song.

    Probably one of the best speeches i've ever heard about respect.

    • @briandtnguyen
      @briandtnguyen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      anna neumann it wasn't just about respect. Although Will had a lot more respect for Sean after getting his ass handed to him by Sean. Lol
      This scene is mainly about the difference between reading about life and experiencing it first hand.
      Equally important, it is about Sean telling Will that he cares more about how Will feels and who Will is than he does about how much Will knows or how smart he is.

    • @Lily-tj1zo
      @Lily-tj1zo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree.
      I think i'm thinking about the word "respect" differently from how you may have first read me as using it, however, because i meant an unconditional respect that doesn't increase based on people's wisdom- earned /nor/ unearned-.... but nonetheless honours every ounce of anyone's experience as something that /can/ teach them things that one may not yet know- and therefor finds a lot of expression among people who have been through more than one has or different things than one personally knows of firsthand.

    I felt the impact on my life all over again.. almost like I had lost a best friend that was as close to me like my own father was to me.. When Robin Williams passed.. I was grieving again from the deep loss within. I loved him as an actor in all the movies I felt there was a connection to someone whom I never knew yet in some way I did. Watching movies and films for me has never been the same since.

    One of a kind and truly missed

    This scene hits me really hard and I wish I had a therapist like Sean. In many ways I'm kinda similar to Will - I put on this elaborate intellectual bravado and try to pretend I'm untouchable (which I'm doing a piss poor job of, suffice to say). Like Will, I "have a bullshit answer to everything". I project the image of "an intelligent confident man" but behind that facade I'm just a cocky, scared shitless kid. At least I'm aware of all this and can admit it on certain rare occasions, which hopefully is a step in the right direction.
