Agreed - the backing music only comes in at the end which allows the watcher to be moved purely by the words alone. Robin has a Morgan Freeman style voice - his monologue in this, Awakenings and Patch Adams shows us what a truly gifted individual we have so sadly lost.

A lot of Damon/Affleck’s screenplay set the stage for this scene, but in terms of the exact dialogue, the director, producers, actors, any advisors, and some scriptwriters all have a say and influence before they actually put it to film.
Most of Robin Williams' movies have a lot of ad-libbed lines from him, some of them were amazing, I remember reading about Aladdin and they actually animated some of his scenes around what he recorded. In this movie, the scene about his wife farting, that was ad-libbed, Matt Damon was genuinely laughing at that.
This scene made me realize life is about experiences not things.

I think it's all subjective. The definitions of "experiences" and "just material things" can vary dramatically from person to person.
When I was younger I used to party every weekend, "going out with friends". But I wasn't really having fun, enjoying the experience. I was doing it because of peer pressure, because that's what I was supposed to be doing at that time. Now I look back and I wish I could've invested that time in "just material things" such as watching a movie I like, reading a book or playing a video game. Life is about what you make of it, not anything in particular.

This is one of if not the best scenes in cinematic history. The way Robin Williams delivers this monologue, not overacting it at all, how the camera doesn’t pan to Matt Damon until the point is made. Truly genius.

Williams nails this scene, but credit has to be also given to the script. This is the moment that reveals to everyone why Sean is in his own league compared to all the other psychiatrists who had tried to work with Will before him. No one else has previously seen through Will’s hard shell like Sean does, and Will is clearly totally unprepared for that. He is left speechless, and that is the painful but necessary first step towards his mental healing. It’s a brilliantly written piece, and both Williams and Damon make it an unforgettable moment.

This scene can basically be summarized as Sean telling Will, "You may know so much, but you have never lived." Brilliant.
The brilliance of this scene is that Sean throws Will’s words back at him, the words Will used earlier to put the arrogant Harvard student in his place, but on a deeper level. Will asked the Harvard student if he was “going to plagiarize the whole book, or does he have an original thought of his own?” Sean is now asking Will, “Are you going to plagiarize a bunch of books, or do you have an original experience, an original life, of your own?”

I think these were truly the words that broke through Will's defenses. He realizes that his past traumas have led him to live a life without meaningful connections, distanced from the world. Hands down one of the best scenes in movie history. The delivery from Robin Williams, the subtlety in Matt Damon's eyes darting back and forth with unease as he's being dissected by Sean, masterful. A timeless classic.

It really does hit different. I'm still young, and it wasn't that long ago that I would refuse to step foot in a museum, or even travel abroad, because "there isn't anything there that I can't see on the internet." I'm not even 30 and I'm already starting to regret shutting myself off to so many experiences.

The world will put a timetable on things and cause you to feel like you can't accomplish something if you haven't done so by a certain age, but that isn't accurate at all. The best is yet to come. One element I love about this scene is the way the camera slowly brings in Will at 2:16 . You get lost watching and listening to Sean, and almost forget that Will is there, and Sean is talking to you instead. Then you remember that Will is there and see that he is as motionless and still as you are. Robin Williams, you were so good and are very much missed.
What's really interesting is that earlier, in the bar scene with that private school guy Clark, Will accused him of having no original thoughts on the matter--that every thought he had could have been from the library. And now, Williams' character exposes that this is also the case with Will. Awesome scene.

For real! I almost forgot this was a scene out of a movie for a minute, I was literally entranced with everything he said. Amazing acting skills for sure.
The way he looks at Will after “you may have even been laid a few times” pure yearning.
The camera. Sliding across to Will. Like a giant tonne of weight. Beautifully done. One of Cinema’s greatest scenes. Pure art.
I like how at the beginning of this scene, Will is cocky and ready to "do mock therapy" on the therapist again, but then, in the space of a single shot, the only voice and face we hear for most of it is Sean's as he points out to Will that his intellectual armor, snark, and tough attitude are just defense mechanisms he's using to keep from being truly vulnerable with another person. And then, slowly, the single shot reveals Will's face as he's suddenly speechless for the first time in the movie. He has no comeback.
"You're terrified of what you might say."
Sean makes Will speechless not because Sean is trying to intimidate Will in order to "win an argument," as Will did with the asshole grad student earlier. He makes Will speechless because he surprises him with genuine care for who Will is as a person and sees through all his intellectual posturing and bravado. He even acknowledges that no one can truly know the "depths" of Will, even though Will thought he could get inside Sean's head earlier.
Exactly. He's simply saying, "I see you" and Will is left speechless.

Brilliant: Sean used the same tactic that Will used on him in order to try and push Sean away. But the difference is that Sean used it in order to show his own vulnerability - sharing personal things about himself (making the first move in order to establish trust) while simultaneously letting him that, "Yeah, you ain't gettin rid of me THAT easily" when he ends by saying, "Your move, chief." We applaud Robin Williams acting and execution of this scene, and rightfully so. However I think we often forget that this story/script was written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon when they were around the ages of "25". To have that kinda incite at that age in order to write something so moving is also a testament to their own talent. I LOVE this movie.

When he got to the bit about loving someone... to feel so vulnerable, to know just one person could level you with one glance, feeling like god put an angel on Earth whom could rescue you from the depths of hell, just for you. Man. Hits hard.
This movie is amazing. Shows the truth about how older people have so much more perspective and knowledge in life, even if the younger person is an absolute genius. And Will realizes this the more he talks to Robin Williams character in the movie and that’s why he respects him so much. Will thought he was ripping apart Robin Williams life but actually it was the opposite. The doctor absolutely ripped Wills life apart and was 100% on point about everything. I could watch this movie over and over and over again. “Your move, Chief”. Brilliant dialogue.

Will got 40 years of wisdom in 5 minutes. Even his genius brain couldn't handle that level of depth.

But you don't know what it's like to roll the dice, only to have your body disassembled into a nightmare jungle, where every living thing is trying to kill you. To grow up and survive 26 long years in total isolation from another human being, only to return and find your parents are dead, your home is gone and your entire town impoverished by the ramifications of your disappearance.

Yeah for sure. It's great how the scene starts off with him being his cocky, smug self. And then 3 minutes later he's speechless.
But gently. That's why it's so effective. Had it been with fist swinging or a battle of wits there's no way Will would have sat there listening. It's an amazing scene.

I watched this movie as a kid. Loved it. Watching as an adult with four kids of my own, one a certified genius himself...takes on such a deeper meaning. This movie is so transcendent. Robin Williams: the hero we didn't deserve. RIP

Robin Williams was so freaking talented. This scene felt so genuine, almost like he was talking to Matt Damon instead of reading lines from a script.

The first guy who realized Robbin Williams isn't good just for comedy has a very special place in Heaven.
And in our hearts.
This film changed me when I watched for the first time 5 years ago. I was anxious and bitter at everything and everyone. I was combative and saw every slight disagreement as a battle that I just HAD to win.
Thought I was more intelligent and insightful than everyone until I saw this monologue.
I took his words to heart, as if he was saying them to me. I cleaned my act up, I seeked help for my anxiety and depression and turned my life around.
Good for you man...im kind of at the same stage where you were. Trying to turn my life around too.

Same thing happen to me, I've watched this few years ago along with his other films (Patch Adams recommended by my counselor and Dead Poet Society that I discovered along the way). Until now, I am still work in progress. Hope everything works out in our lives soon.

What a talent! Robin Williams was one of a kind. A genius at comedy and such moving and genuine performances in dramas.
I love how the camera stayed on Robin for a good two minutes without cutting. The words are excellent, but the way he says them with his eyes makes it so much more powerful. One of the best actors I’ve ever seen, and one I miss even 7 years later. This is my favorite monologue I've seen in a film. Such a poignant bit of dialogue

@@totoroid I feel like it was intentional. The camera slowly pans to include Will, and I think it was supposed to visually show Sean's words cracking his defenses. I haven't watched the movie in a while so I don't quite remember the chronological order, but given that it started to pan when Sean was talking about love, it might be after Will met Skylar.

This is the best scene in the whole movie. The way that Robin discusses that life should be enjoyed not by just reading book. That proved that Robin should be silly and serious in all dimensions, which is what makes his passing hard to bear. His talent will never be topped.
So the implication is that this lesson is best learned by experiencing it yourself, not watching a youtube clip :)
The “It’s not your fault” scene is tied with this scene. The movie itself is just incredible.

This is the difference between "fake it till you make it" and raw authenticity. Such a wonderful depiction of actual psychotherapy, which involves respect for the fact that we can never really know or assume what it's like to be someone else. But we can try to help in a way based on our own experiences.

Probably not the same Robert Wagner, but this commented reminded me of a "Rip Torn" line from the movie, "Defending Your Life". When he explains to the Albert Brooks, character, that everybody on earth uses between 2 and 5% of their brains. He goes on to explain, that if you used more than 5% of your brain, you wouldn't be happy on earth. Being a fatalist, I tend towards believing that Robin Williams' time here was just up.
But you do understand that everyone uses 100% of their brains, right? If there's a part of your brain that doesn't get used, it atrophies and you lose it. This 5% or 10% trope that hollywood loves to perpetuate is nothing but nonsense.

Comedians are incredible actors because they must know about timing. Timing is everything!
The best therapy I've ever seen. Also, speaking as a psychologist, the kind of therapy that never happens and that today's therapists are not trained to do. Will's "mental health professionals" today would diagnose him, medicate him, teach him "coping skills" for managing the "symptoms" of his "mental disorder(s)," and give him "quality assurance" questionnaires at the end of every session to show therapy is "working" based on his perceived satisfaction with how the session went. And that is "evidence-based practice." What we see here is the opposite of "evidence-based practice." And it is beautiful and perfect. Makes me want to cry and retire.
It’s why therapy sucks for those who’ve got problems beyond base level depression and anxiety, especially in the UK. You’re treated like some fragile thing that needs to be fixed when really all you need is something more human and someone to help show you how to cope yourself. Everyone is different and we all get by with different means.
and Will, in turn, would destroy nearly every single one and it wouldn't be close.

For supporting role winners it's often boils to one mesmerizing scene that earns the nod/win. I always think of Jack Parlance's 'One Thing' scene from City Slickers and almost all of Viola Davis's noms were for one scene killers lol

I love this scene because sometimes, or most times, people who attack us are actually afraid or scared of their truth. Very realistic.
I love this scene. One of my favorite parts is how patient the editors were with the cuts. We see nothing but robin Williams for like the first 2 minutes straight, then a minute on Matt Damon. So many editors would have cut after every line or show a reaction or something. The pacing is just so intimate this way.
Doesn’t get better than this. He’s essentially saying, “I don’t care how smart you are. You’re just a kid and don’t know sh*t.”

While I agree. That's my issue with the scene. Is Damon's character cocky? Yes. However, he's like 20, and his age is out of his control. The only people who enjoy that kind of retort are people who are old but still not emotionally mature enough to understand he's just a kid. Blasting him for his age and lack of experience is frankly immature and our of touch with the fact that he was Damon's age once, but that's just me.

All written by Damon and Affleck, the two young bucks whose opinions you'd dismiss without a second thought. One of the biggest delusions people live under is that with age comes automatic wisdom, but no, there are plenty of stupid old people who don't have a clue of what they're talking about, the reason people like you think that is because wisdom comes from experiences, not age, now it just so happens when your older your are likely to have experiences that give you wisdom, but don't kid yourself, plenty of people live and die and never learn anything from their experiences, and they go throughout their lives living the fool making the same mistakes, over and over again.
Tl;Dr Age and wisdom do correlate, but the former does not cause the latter.
