The part where Chuckie realizes Will has left is always my favorite part. He is sad and happy all in one then you got the awesome Robin Williams line at the end.
I love how his best, realest, and closest friends - the ones he planned to grow old living down the street from - are all genuinely happy that he took his ticket and got the fuck out of there. They all wanted so much more and better for him; they didn’t wanna hold him back/down there in South Boston with them and their mediocre (but still honorable) lives. They wanted him to have all the kinds of better that a human being can have in his/her life; and to transcend all of that place, as he was more than able to do with the level of mega-genius that he had. They loved him unconditionally; and through that love, they wanted him to leave them behind and spread his *huge* wings and just go fuckin flying all over this simple little world already. It takes a next-level degree of best-friend love to want your buddy to leave you behind and do what he was born to do, instead of stickin it out through life with you.

I can't think of any logical way there could be a sequal to this movie. This is Will's defining moment. The moment he chooses to go after what he can instead of being satisfied with a mediocre life. Part of storytelling is asking yourself: Is this the most interesting story of my character's life?
I was 3 when this came out, and I’d go far enough to say it’s the greatest movie of all-time. I’d love to see and hear the applause it got in the theaters.
The “Son of a bitch. He stole my line” was improvised on the spot by Robin Williams. Matt Damon said Williams did about 15 takes of this scene. He only said this line once, in the middle of all the takes he would do for this scene, and never said it again afterwards. It was decided to use this take because it was the best one from all the takes.
@@MidwestFarmToys there’s some arguments as to how many takes. Damon was there on the set as well to read the lines Robin is reading so he could react at the right time. But the bottom line is in the middle of however many takes it took to do that scene, Robin just said that on the spot with no warning to anyone and the director liked that take enough to put it in the movie. I know this response is late, but just for some context as to why Damon said the scene was shot about 15 times.
@@antraxxslingshots I get the sense a lot of Robin's lines were improvised, finding better things to say than the script - he's just that good. Most notable is the scene where he told Will about his wife farting in her sleep, nobody was expecting that.
Give me a good story and interesting well acted characters we can relate with and care about. Give me that over mindless special effects. This movie is pure quality from beginning to end
this movie is overrated. the whole premise of the movie is bullshlt. Will being able to solve in seconds a problem that took professors years to solve breaks the movie for me. Everything else is based on that premise (the huge genius of Will) so it's... weak.
ArbiterDan the thing is, there are quite literally people out there with that same kind of potential. You may harbor your doubts, but this movie is not as unrealistic as you may believe.
It's actually not bullshit. There are people (they are incredibly rare) who have insights that even leaders in their respective fields can't see. This entire story was essentially inspired by Ramanujan & Hardy -- Hardy being one of the greatest mathematicians of the early 20th century and, by Hardy's own account, Ramanujan far surpassed him.
It must have taken a lot of effort for Affleck to put those mixed emotions on his face at the same time: jubilation that his best friend actually listened to him and left without a goodbye conflicting with the sad realization that he'll probably never see his best friend again. I know lots of people rip on his acting these days, but damn he was excellent in this movie.
@@BlaneNostalgia Exactly He was a friend so good that he wanted what was best for Will, even if that meant that he wouldn't get to see Will ever again. That's true brotherly love.
the look of comprehension on Chuckie's face reminds me of that line from Shawshank "Some birds aren't meant to be caged, their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice But still, the place you live in is that much more grey."
That note change at 1:51 is so good. It happens at the exact moment that Ben’s expression switches: the moment he realizes his best friend has gone without even a goodbye, and it’s a brief moment of sadness before it turns into genuine happiness.
It was acted perfectly by Affleck i think. You can totally see the Stages: 1) Oh my god, he is really gone 2) damn, my friend left me...really sad 3) realizing thathis wish for Will came true so he is really happy for him. 2:55 can we just talk about how haunting the end of this movie is? The final lines belong to Robin Williams, while Elliot Smith sings "Miss Misery." What a perfect song that Elliott wrote just for this film, and what a perfect line that Robin improvised. Two absolute legends who were lost way too soon, here at the peak of their talent, conspire to make those final shots of a car driving westward, through the Allegheny pines so much more poignant. In the years since this movie was made, that's all taken on a real unexpected gravity.
My son, who was born in 2002, watched this movie with me and told me it was the best movie he has ever seen. This movie was made 5 years before he was born but resounds with his generation like no other film I know.

The one thing that I always loved about Robin Williams is his ability to do solid drama. While I did enjoy his comedy films, I felt he was always great doing drama. Good Will Hunting, The Fisher King, Dead Poets Society, are just a few of his best films. The best part? I will always remember him for his role from Mork & Mindy, whom I grew up watching during the 70's and 80's. He's just one of those rare actors that comes along who can make you laugh, make you cry, make you stand up and look at yourself in the mirror. he is, forevermore, a consummate actor.
After a lifetime of getting bullied and beaten up, he just wanted some affection. Is that so bad? He wasn't lazy and didn't lack ambition but when the people who should love, nourish and support you are absent ... Affection and love is all you ever want. Hugs and some warmth. He was just sad. He just needed some kindness.
I love this scene. My favorite part is when Robin Williams turns over the note and it says "... tell him sorry, but I've got to go hunt some good will!"
One of the best movies ever made with Matt and Robin as leading roles hands down. The "Its not your fault" scene is one of my favorites in the movie. Brings a tear to my eye everytime I watch it. #ripRobin
I agree, Robin is brilliant in this movie, Matt, Ben and Minnie are also excellent as well. Even Casey was really good even though it would be another 10 years or so before he got more widespread recognition, becoming an Oscar winner himself for Manchester By The Sea (2016).
1:14 can anyone id that 5-point badge on the door? I feel like it's significant, as it's the last thing before the credits shot. I ran it through google images, looked at army insignia, and pulled up searches for crest, fort, symbol, etc. To me it looks like a golfer's in the middle of the circle.
I could watch this film a million times and never get bored of it. Just a brilliant all round feel good film with great acting especially by the late Great Robin Williams ❤.
For those don’t understand the ending it is clear that will finally detached from society to live happily by pursuing his own personal interests he is more happy taking down the road even alone because he knows finally nothing holds him back
I love how Chuckie took his time processing Will’s absence. He’s at first excited that “the best part of his day” is realized, then he’s sad that his friend’s gone, then back to feeling happy for him, then wondering if he’ll ever talk to him again, and then back to “of course he will” with the smile. Glad the camera stayed with him throughout all of that.
I saw this movie the day before my hs graduation for the first time ever and this song will always remind me of this girl i met I liked in the summer after graduation we were cool but my dumbass wasted a year and a half being scared to admit my feelings towards her and eventually she moved on and found someone else and never spoke to me again. Listening to the song hurts sometimes smh. If you like someone go after them and don’t be afraid because you’ll end up like me living in regret.
Remember guys, your real friends are the ones that want to see you be better than you are everyday. If they’re not making you be better, or believing in your potential to do so, they aren’t your friends. This scene is amazing.
I think it's rare that a movie will *ever* leave me feeling bittersweet but this one did. This ending means a lot, especially after remembering of Robin William's passing. This movie felt genuine and I hope it's message helps others who've gone through things similar. Therapy doesn’t make you weak by any means, so stop thinking that. The only one self conscious about your image is yourself.
I loved this movie's message too. It basically tells you that true happiness doesn't always mean having some high-end job, but pursuing what you're truly passionate about.
I asked a friend about this movie yesterday and although, i’ve never seen it, thank you to youtube and apple for recommending it the day after i talked about it out loud! great listening!
I live about one mile from where the Au Bon Pain used to be. I was in Harvard Square when they were shooting that day. Tastees and the Baskin Robbins is long gone. That Weeks Footbridge is still there, though.
That Smile at 2:04 said a lot. The part where Chuckie realizes Will has left is always my favorite part. He is sad and happy all in one then you got the awesome Robin Williams line at the end.
Robin Williams was great indeed, but I never thought Ben Affleck was right for this role. He was too pretty and tried too hard to make up for it. Even his smirk in this scene was as overdone as his street Bostonian. He looked too much like Elvis here which ruined it for me.
I grew up watching watching "Mork & Mindy" clear back from the late 1970s into the early 1980s, a show that featured this then nearly unknown manic comedic genius named Robin Williams. When that show ended, I joined hundreds of millions of people watching him do appearances on various TV series, late night talk shows (especially with the late great Johnny Carson), standup routines, and dozens of movies. This guy made so many people laugh and cry, then we all cried for the last time when he couldn't go on living. It's rare when someone has the kind of range that Robin Williams had.
I don't see what's so "bittersweet" about this ending. If anything, it's just sweet because Matt Damon's character Will Hunting finally realizes what he wants out of life and decides to take action by going after it.
You can see the bittersweet in Ben Affleck's scene with the various facial expressions he shows as the realization hits him. He realizes that Will left, and while he is happy about it, he's sad that his best friend won't be there with him every day. That that part of their life together is over forever. And he's suppressing that bittersweet emotion with that awkward smile as he walks back to the car and tells the rest of them that Will is gone.
Because he left the closest people in his life up to that point and the place he was born and raised. New beginnings, though necessary, are always bittersweet.
Love this last scene of him driving down the road with the wide open green fields and beckoning horizon ahead signifying his psyche is squared away for the first time in his life and that the whole world is now his oyster in every way. Thanks to his buddies and Sean.
Will could be the only person in the world to beat the house with his math skills. He gets himself effin rich and now he and Skylar are millionaires lol

I will always remember him for his role from Mork & Mindy, whom I grew up watching during the 70's and 80's. He's just one of those rare actors that comes along who can make you laugh, make you cry, make you stand up and look at yourself in the mirror. he is, forevermore, a consummate actor.
Trained at Juilliard.
Did you ever see One Hour photo
I’m still sad that his gone, he was a very special actor and had so much to give ❤
It's been said that the greatest comedians can make you laugh ... and cry.
One of best movies with best endings ever!!
"Son of a bitch...he stole my line" ahahha great
Yeah but line is in your hand, eat it. Lol, he ga e the line to his guys
Improvised line too
After a lifetime of getting bullied and beaten up, he just wanted some affection.
"Son of a bitch. That's the name of the movie..."
you never forget those true friends who pushed you to be the best of who u are
Matt was awesome, but Robin Williams was brilliant!
greatest movie ever..it changed my life!
“A good ending is never about happy ever after, but about a hopeful future”
RIP Robin Williams, RIP Elliot Smith this movie was amazing.
My favourite film of all time. I laughed, cried and was inspired!
How can you be tired watching these classic movies in this life...
One of the best movies ever made with Matt and Robin as leading roles hands down. The "Its not your fault" scene is one of my favorites in the movie. Brings a tear to my eye everytime I watch it. #ripRobin
So glad they went with an orchestral soundtrack addition. Super classy and emotional! Gets the job done every time!
Every actor in this movie did some of the best work of their careers in my opinion.
I agree, Robin is brilliant in this movie, Matt, Ben and Minnie are also excellent as well.
Even Casey was really good even though it would be another 10 years or so before he got more widespread recognition, becoming an Oscar winner himself for Manchester By The Sea (2016).
Agreed.
So in the end Chuckie was Will's Soulmate after all. Because he challenged him and Will listened to him by leaving!
That chuckle from affleck when he realize matt is gone. Pure class
This movie changed my life..I will always be grateful for this movie!
I love this ending because when Ben shrugs, he knew his friend went off to a better life.
If people can wrap their head around it, this movie is 25 years old in December. How much time has passed by...
One of my favorite endings to a movie. Amazing job!
Then, Will stands up:
-"O' Captain. My captain!"
One of my favorite movies. Beautiful ending. Beautiful priceless selfless love from genuine friendship.
Ben’s character just standing at the door. I’m glad they didn’t rush that scene.
Just watched this movie for the first time and sssssssssss
That end had me tearing up bruh😭fire movie mann
2:50 self-promoting to the passager front seat.
Kenny Ducoste funny because the guy that got in the fromt is ben’s brother in real life lol
And he got the Oscar last year haha, this movie is how he started his career
Ben's brother Casey...
i'm pretty sure it was a ad lib too, if i recall it wasnt in the script to jump to the shotgun seat
Remember guys, your real friends are the ones that want to see you be better than you are everyday. If they’re not making you be better, or believing in your potential to do so, they aren’t your friends. This scene is amazing.
One of the greatest closing moments to a movie. Ever.
This is one the greatest movies of all time. Matt and Ben are truly friends in real life and that transcends into the screen
translates 👍
One of my all time favorite movies. Endlessly watchable. Topped off at the end by Chuckie’s selfless act of letting Will go.
Love the message of the ending of the movie....smth like "there are more important things in life than a 'job' "
I loved this movie's message too. It basically tells you that true happiness doesn't always mean having some high-end job, but pursuing what you're truly passionate about.
I asked a friend about this movie yesterday and although, i’ve never seen it, thank you to youtube and apple for recommending it the day after i talked about it out loud! great listening!
this is the 1st time ive come across a movie where i had to just see the ending. What a movie.......masterpiece
@Barry Obama Am talking about how will chose to go after a woman rather than pursue a dream job. You can't imagine doing such a thing in today's time
The look over his shoulder to his buddy in the backseat after attaining shot gun is terrific lol
elliot smith is just the cherry on top
There are films that deserve an Oscar. This is one of the few.
So many memorable scenes in one movie...
I live about one mile from where the Au Bon Pain used to be. I was in Harvard Square when they were shooting that day. Tastees and the Baskin Robbins is long gone. That Weeks Footbridge is still there, though.
Back in the time when Hollywood used to give chances to at least dozens of amazing films a year.
Yup. Now its just marvel movies, remakes, reboots, and sequels.
@@Sean-bz8ri disgusting…..
@@Sean-bz8ri exactly that’s why Hollywood is dead Netflix is the new thing but it’s so shit have you seen Netflix original movies
Robin's work was amazing. We miss you dude. From the time I was 11 watching you on t.v. to the day you passed. I'm 54 now.
RIP brother.
Happy crying. A movie that worked out for the best.
Wow I haven't seen this movie yet but after watching a few short scenes I'm definitely going to watch it. Looks fantastic
Straight up legendary.
One of the greatest movies.
I don't see what's so "bittersweet" about this ending. If anything, it's just sweet because Matt Damon's character Will Hunting finally realizes what he wants out of life and decides to take action by going after it.
Livingston Hampton I’m not too sure man, it’s just a vibe I felt
Well... that's understandable. People feel different vibes and mine was just a sweet ending vibe.
Good point Veruthas. I didn't think about that at first.
Because he left the closest people in his life up to that point and the place he was born and raised. New beginnings, though necessary, are always bittersweet.
this is just the best ever movie / story line.
This Elliot smith soundtrack is very appropriate.
That look Ben gives, confusion, sadness, then understanding and acceptance. Brilliant acting!
Love this last scene of him driving down the road with the wide open green fields and beckoning horizon ahead signifying his psyche is squared away for the first time in his life and that the whole world is now his oyster in every way. Thanks to his buddies and Sean.
"I had to see about a girl"
Bullshit, he's just going to Vegas to take a shot at the World Series of Poker.
Wohrld Seeeries of Pokaah'
Will could be the only person in the world to beat the house with his math skills. He gets himself effin rich and now he and Skylar are millionaires lol
Im watching this for the first time in 2022..and feel disappointed didn’t watch this underrated movie in cinema
Still one of my most favorite movies of all time. It was not just cinematic art ... It was magic.
This is my message to YOU or anyone who reads this, live your best life, enjoy it take the risk you normally wouldn’t cause it’s like they say “you always miss the shots you don’t take” ❤️ lots of luv brothers
Ben Affleck is such an underrated actor. His recent roles as quiet, serious men has ruined his reputation but he was perfect in this role
Do you still have some pot?
I love it. A beautiful movie beautifully done. Liz Davies from Aus
