@@gavburger Yes, people have said it's Hal Lindes, I have to say I've never heard of him before, but I do remember a guy called Phil Palmer playing with Dire Straits.
You are probably right Margaret, but Mark Knopfler did a one off concert on the Jools Holland show, I think it ended up being called "A night in London" and on that show there was a guy who played slide guitar called Sonny Landreth, I think he's an American but that was a show I watched from start to finish, so I had the advantage of watching Mark Knopfler introduce him. 😄😄
This has to be my favorite reaction of the video. Adorable 😊. I do agree with the break being a bit repetitive which is what made it so brilliant. You know the build-up is coming, you just don't know when.🤟🙂
Performance lives up to the album recording. This song still fantastic after 40 yrs. Reaction is hysterical. Lilly (Looney), your antics are so enjoyable to watch. Made Grand Dad laugh, good job. Priceless !.........Both of you ..enjoy your day......and thank you very much.
'Lillytic' is a talented air guitarist, air drummer and air pianist - and she changes between the three effortlessly! Also, she is very perceptive with her comments on what the audience likes! 😝With the musical education she is getting it wouldn't surprise me to see her in 10-20 years making her own music and topping the charts.
@@williamsimmons152Pic Withers was the original Dire Straits drummer but was replaced by this Welsh Wizard Terry Williams who was just an out of this world drummer, so much heart and soul with every beat.🔥🔥🔥

I think you should fo one of her favourite songs as she listens to yours. And actually I'm with you on most of the songs you like as I'm 70 and listen and remember all you play. Keep up the great work 👍
I love it that you love it Lilly! I was at this gig, plenty of lunatics there! The whole place was rocking, we were on the balcony and I swear it was jumping up and down! You don't appreciate it so much at the time, but this is one of the best gigs ever recorded. I was 18 and the only other band I had seen was the Rolling Stones (Still Life Tour at Wembley, ask Grandad) I thought at the time this was normal, its not, so savoir the moment. Your grandad is right, Terry Williams was outstanding, he played like that for over two hours! BTW, Alan Clark was on the keyboards, another great player, with Tommy Mandel on backing keys.
Thanks Richard, yes people have pointed out that Guy Fletcher came along later, and that David Knopfler wasn't there either. The thing that gets me with this concert as far as TH-cam are concerned, is that you are allowed to use this song on TH-cam, but if you try doing Telegraph Road from the same concert, it's a totally different story, they won't have it. I showed it to Lilly, it got taken down very quickly, I appealed, (that often works) but again they said no.
I suppose we should be grateful they allow this one Richard, but strange things happen on TH-cam. Our video of Tom Jones singing I'll never fall in love again, was taken down after about two years, the same thing happened to Rob Squad, yet there are loads of people with the exact same video up, with no problems.
That was the best live version I've ever seen of the Sultans tune. The whole band was super awesome!! Thx both for your reactions and Lilly for her show as well, :) Great work guys!
Love this video and your reaction, 4th time watching 👍when i watch reaction videos i often wonder if the artists watch them too, i read that Samantha Fox loves watching people reacting to her youtube music videos from the 80s, i bet other artists are curious too. The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
David Knopfler left Dire Straits in 1980, this was Hal Lindes. And Guy Fletcher joined Dire Straits after this tour after Mark worked with him on a movie score, it was Tommy Mandel as second keyboardist here with Alan Clark as primary keyboard player
Yes somebody has already mentioned that it wasn't David Knopfler, and I have to admit that I don't really know what David Knopfler looks like, but I do know that he wasn't around long. I should have remembered Alan Clark, and I didn't even know about Tommy Mandel. Thanks for all that Steven. I'm not one of those people who objects to being put right, I'd much rather gain the knowledge, than be totally wrong about something.
I know, Geoff? I loved the guys reaction, and that bit in particular. I wanted to type "He's the best guitarist ANYONE'S ever seen" but of course I know there's no such thing as the greatest guitar player, but he is definitely my favourite guitar player. "Eventually he labelled Mark as the best finger plucker he's seen. "He's playing it like it's a freaking banjo Dude" Seems you've taken a few steps down from his reaction to Lilly's. 😀😀
All the band are great drums inspired but Knopflers touch on guitar magnificent. Not a problem with reoetition love it all. The dynamic shifts in the performance are fantastic.
Hi. Love the reaction 😊 The version from Sydney Final Concert 1986 is my favorite as it's not as repetitive towards the end and has a saxophone which I'm not always a big fan of but it sounded so good on this performance. I also love Calling Elvis from DS Live "On The Night" 1992. Can't wait for MK's new album in April. Cheers all the best from Australia. 👍🎸🎸🎸
Lily's best review yet never laughed so much for a long time you must be a very proud grandad she's a star. Dire Straits are brilliant can you play Telegraph road live Alchemy ,Tunnel of luv also brilliant (live version Alchemy).
Thanks Keith, I'm glad you liked it.As for Telegraph road, I tried it, instantly blocked, so I appealed, and was swiftly put in my place again. It seems they are happy to let people use Sultans of Swing from this concert, but not Telegraph Road, which probably explains why you don't see that many people posting their reactions to it.
Another very catchy Dire Straits track that's similar to Sultan's of Swing is Lady Writer (official music video) i think Lilly would luv it and it's not too long.
Ohhhhh 🎸love this song, Dire Straits are an amazing band, love Mark's voice and his guitar playing is awesome, he's defo one of the best 👍I see what you mean about the drummer too 👍they had so many great hits and this is defo one of their best, i could watch this video over and over. It was fun seeing just when the music grabbed Lilly, she started moving and bopping. This is one of the best live performance I've ever seen and kick the studio version to the kerb (not that that is bad, just the studio limits their ability to let it go). My favourite bend is Jethro Tull (I'm 70 and seen and heard some great bands) but this performance - magic from Mark and the other guys are rocking it too.
To be fair, if you ever wanted to emulate a drummers performance, Terry Williams smashed it this night. What made Mark Knopfler, and Dire Straights was so great was that the individual performances were great, he acted as a lead guitar, singer, and conductor of the group. It was such a flawless performance.
Yes, that's right, I knew David Knopfler was in the bad in the early years, and so I just assumed it was him. At least I'm glad I never said it was definitely Guy Fletcher, but we all make mistakes Rod, just as you have with John Illsley's name. 😄
