Awesome explanation in just 15 minutes, thank you! Loved the part about the minions without a clue of what is happening when superheroes are firefighting, great.
I always love to hear this first story of your "Lean enlightenment", buddy! You did NOT do what most people would have... Tell them THEY were wromg and then stand your ground. "Pride comes BEFORE a Fall." Life lesson from old Proverb: "When you're green... you're growing. When you're ripe... you ROT!" Stay "Green", my friend!
Thank you for continuing to illuminate Lean from all these different angles. You are creating a 3D image of Lean and how its many nuances build success in every aspect of our lives.
I'm making a series of cards that summarize what I've learnt over time. The power of stopping was one of the first cards I made. Staying with the status quo, continuing a disfunction and fighting fires is not going to change much. I see bad practises everywhere in new zealand. It seems that every company that tries to teach lean here fails to get it to catch on. In fact I saw a lean poster in a company and i asked the lady what it was about. She stared at it for a minute and was clueless. That same company recently removed that lean poster and I asked what happened to it and they said they never had even heard of lean. So sad. Fastcap was the first company that really gave me an insight to true people culture and empowerment for everybody
Nicholas Davidson Wow these are really profound comments it does it need to be this way it’s all about leader ship and it’s all about the leader at the top the minute that changes everything else will change
Paul, first, I agree 101% with every word you sad. But what you've done is way beyond ordinary simple thing, and that what those great average companies can't understand or don't want to apply. They look at you and ask you to give them a tool to remove an obstacle on their path. But what you did is way much deeper, smarter and, as a result, winning. You change the path itself. When you had an inventory management problem, you didn't hire a manager or bought a multi-million inventory program. You changed your path and eliminated the inventory. When your customer's orders were dramatically behind, you took the opposite path instead of hiring more people or working longer hours. The opposite path to what is make sense. You stoped ship orders at all and began improving. Instead of firing people during the economic crisis, you ask them to improve and send them to Japan, where they learned that new working path. You do the opposite of "making sense" things. And this is what Taichi Ohno did in the 1950th. Check his book "Workplace management." You changed your mindset path.
Hi Paul, I recently subscribed to your channel (I'm from Italy). I really enjoyed the concepts you outlined. I work as design engineer and with your words I confirmed my perception that the vast majority of companies where I worked, have no idea of what lean manufacturing is - in spite of 5S posts and kanban card holders all around. It's more of a buzzword and something to show off to customers and auditors. No one is going to find out that you're just "faking" to be lean, and that's because no one really knows what lean is! Apart from people like you ofc. We need to change all this. But people like me are no decision makers in a big corporation and I have no power to change the status quo if the rest of the company doesn't come along
To quote from chapter 20 in my book 2 Second Lean "'My boss doesn’t get it and won’t support what I’m trying to do.' My reply is always the same; 'focus on yourself, develop your own area of influence and be relentless about continuous improvement in your life. If you adopt this approach, in short order you will not only rise up and be promoted, but you will eventually be the leader of your organization or another thoughtful organization that understands the power of true Lean leadership.'" This question is so popular, I even made a video addressing this called Lean Naysayers .
Hi Paul. I have been watching your vids for about a year on my other channel. I really appreciate your vision and committement. We use your motto "fix what bugs you." I also make clear to everyone that identifying waste is part of their job description. While I only have a couple of side-laborers my question is the analysis you would take when purchasing machines to reduce labor for production. Being a small company some of these purchases are not necessarily gong to have an ROI that an accountant would beam about but certainly they must be purchased to continue to grow. Any thoughts? Thanks... Joe
Part of my job is specifying new equipment for a manufacturing company. Sometimes the cost justification is due to labor savings, but other times it is based on addition of new business, which is a higher risk, but you're right it can be necessary for the company to grow.
